Already do have a compressor, but it is noisy as hell, and doesn't have a moisture trap. I was just looking for a moisture trap when I found the package deal. The package seemed like a pretty decent deal, so I decided to give it a try. I practice soo much overkill when it comes to this hobby it hurts. I know very little about airbrushes, but I now own 5 of them and 2 compressors. At least if one overheats I can switch to the other.
Will definitely look into quick disconnect.
This hobby is soo expensive that I bargain hunt constantly, otherwise I don't think I could afford it.
Already have a head start on airbush paint. I used to work for a local haunted house that would airbrush makeup onto it's performers. At the end of the season they would just toss the large half empty bottles of paint. One year I ended up with all the left overs. I moved the contents to smaller, air tight bottles, and it's been sitting on my shelf next to the airbrush. At least a dozen or so bottles there.
To be honest though, I'll probably try my hand at thinning craft store paints, unless the project requires me to do otherwise.
Currently I'm spray painting on base coats and applying mostly craft store paints by hand as it is.
And yes, those tanks look pretty sweet. Probaly going to be the first vehicles I try the airbrush on.
My problem is that bargain hunting makes me buy things I probably don't need
Thinning the paints is probably going to work just fine. If they're especially gloppy, I would recommend thinning them before putting them in the color cup.
I have one very similar to the one on the right, single action with an underhanging pot. It's alright for basecoating, and not a lot else if I'm honest; it also fails to pick up paint unless you put in quite a bit, but if you if use cheap paints it's not so bad. The others I can't speak for, but they look pretty decent and the top-fed one should save some paint.
GrimDork wrote: My problem is that bargain hunting makes me buy things I probably don't need
I am absolutely guilty of this

Until I am confident with with the airbrush, it's going to be cheap paint all the way
and then probably cheap paint after that as well...
That's my problem lol, always keeping an eye out for cheap modeling stuff and ending up with too much of some things etc. Also doesn't help that I back kickstarters and then still want to bargain hunt later on
Pre-ordered Deathstorm from GW and TheWarStore.
Release Day was last Friday.
GW mails it out the day AFTER release.
TheWarstore's inventory was delayed by GW and they mail it 5 days after release.
Today, I get my copy of Deathstorm from TheWarStore.
My expected shipping date from GW is on Friday, 2 days from now.
Got all excited to build the models, and then realised I don't own the newest codex for either Blood Angels or Tyranids.
New Blood Angels Codex drops this Firday, and I happen to have it off, so I'll likely have a Blood Angels Codex on Friday.
Tyranids, I know I'll want the Leviathan Book and the Codex, so I think I'll shop around until I can get a deal on them. Leviathan will get a softcover reprint "soon", so they should stop going for silly prices on Ebay, and start showing up with a discount.
Besides, now I have to figure out how to make stencils for airbrushing T-shirts
Print the thing out, or hold a paper up to your screen and trace it, I use printer paper 'cause it's thicker, white construction would work too. Cut out the shape, sometimes it works better to use the negative space that's left, other times I use the paper doll that comes out. Get some low-tack spray adhesive, the kind that specifically mentions removing it being a thing. Spray the back of the paper, let it sit for a minute or two so the glue doesn't soak into the shirt and become an issue, press the stencil down onto the shirt firmly, give it a minute or two, then you can start spraying. Spray. Let it dry, then remove stencil.
You can do words the same way, it's probably just as easy (or easier) than using plastic stencils and trying to do a letter at a time.
Anything that's floating in space will need little connective bits (you can see them on plastic stencils) or to be placed separately (to make stuff like O's and A's and what not). Once the stencil is removed you just got in low power and low paint and fill in the little line the connective piece left, it's easier than it sounds.
Will post some pics of the first assembled Drop Pod tommorrow.
Having a couple of minor issues with the templates. Nothing major, but some things I want to correct before building more of them. The vertical supports lack foam core in the top edge. It's not a big deal, but it looks like an oversight in the templates. Also, the doors are easy to cut out and build, but difficult to keep in their proper shape because the provided tabs are tiny and hard to secure. I'm going to improvise a few support pieces to help the doors keep their shape, and then use larger tabs on future drop pods.
I actually have a 5 page PDF ready to share for the drop pods, but I wanted to actually build it at least once before sharing the templates. No re-inventing the wheel in the templates, mosty laying out all the pieces in an easier to cut out fashion, instead of little bits by themselves that tell you they need 20+ of them.
Got my new compressor and 4 new airbrushes yeasterday. While I am eager to try them out, the wife is on vacation this week, so I may have to put off trying them out until next week.
Don't forget to get some airbrush lube stuff. Apparently it's good for them. I haven't noticed a big difference but it does make it easier to screw the tiny parts together snug without as much force (and therefore less chance to break parts) and maybe makes the trigger a little smoother.
I may have to look for some quick change adapters for the air brushes. 2 of the 4 have quick change adapters on the airbrush, but the hose they provided me does not.
Can anyone recommend some place inexpensive on line to get them ?
Or is that something I can find at a hardware store ?
I've always heard that but don't have one nearby. You may want to eventually look into an ultrasonic cleaner for weekly airbrush cleanings. Or well maybe bi-monthly depending on how much you use them. I've heard they work well, considering getting one myself.
I've been dabbling with the idea of getting an ultrasonic cleaner for years. They are great for stripping paint off of miniatures. The only problem is they are a $100+ for anything bigger and more powerful than a jewelry cleaner sized model.
I've had an airbrush for a decade I haven't used.
A vaccum former that I played with for a week and haven't gotten any serious use out of.
Three or so foam cutters that I used to make terrain I hardly used, or gave away.
Lead melting pot sitting in a corner.
I love my toys, er..um tools, but I'm reluctant to buy anything else until I'm confident I have a regular use for it.
Heh, I'm eying the jewelry cleaner sizes myself, by the time you've broken your airbrush down to get at the parts it'll easily fit inside (probably would anyway). I hadn't considered using a larger one to strip models though.... 2.5 liter.. that's a pretty decent size =/
The problem with the jewelry cleaner sized ones isn't really the size. They tend to be mostly plastic and intended for occasional light use. If you read the product reviews on Amazon there are plenty of small ultrasonic cleaners for around $40, but they have lots of negative reviews for breaking after a few months, or even after a few uses..
The larger models tended to be reviewed as built better. Although I have read more than one review that recommended sealing it with silicone to prevent water moisture making it into the electronics.
I was just looking at that exact ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight. I like that one because it has a heated option. I need a larger one like that because I have some Carnifexes that need to take a swim.
If I could (easily) return my entire tyranid horde back to bare plastic (and preferably eat up some of the ugly joins I made back in my youth so I could reassemble them) I could actually see rebuilding and painting the things. Kind of wonder if it would do that good of a job w/o toothbrush/elbow-grease though.
Drop Pod looks awesome!
I've been tossing around the idea of doing a Drop Pod Nurgle force, seeing how great this looks definitely makes it more feasible.
Kudos!
If I were actually playing, I think I would want to copy cat just so I could do silly things my my dreadnoughts. I had better stick to living vicariously though

Thanks for posting the link to download the template as well! I'm looking forward to trying out some of these....and rhinos....definitely gonna need a bunch of Rhinos.

Definitely going to airbrush these. Probably next week though. I want to get the quick disconnect and some cleaning brushes before I start messing with them.

Your welcome. These have been pretty easy to build. Let me finish another half dozen and I'll take a crack at a Rhino Chasis.
I'd be interested in seeing your Nurgle Pods when they are done, so feel free to a post a link here when you have one done.

Will do! I've got a Hellblade in the works right now, gotta get that done first! Seems like the list of proposed projects grows alot faster than the list of completed projects.
Just spent the last 2 hours tweeking the templates to look a little more like the Forgeworld Drop Pod, and added the internal braces I've been using that help the door keep their shape while assembling.
I'll post the updated templates after I've actually built one using them, to make sure there aren't any errors in it.
Top tail fin - more foam core, less card stock
Doors - Larger Tabs make it easier to glue together
Braces - Added 6 Brace pieces
Windows - Changed window shape to more closely resemble Forge World Drop pod
Side Fins - Made the details larger, to better accomodate wrap around bits
If the foam core is snagging and ripping while you are cutting, it's time to switch to a fresh blade. Being fruggle myself, I often ignored that advice in the past, but let me assure you, it makes a huge difference when cutting foam core.
adamsouza wrote: If the foam core is snagging and ripping while you are cutting, it's time to switch to a fresh blade. Being fruggle myself, I often ignored that advice in the past, but let me assure you, it makes a huge difference when cutting foam core.
Dull blades make fine flash scrapers imho, But yeah, foam core needs fresh new, sharp blades.
I get the sharp blade thing, restic is the same way. But even when I've got a sharp blade I don't cut the foam well. it's not so much that it tears but that I can't keep a straight line even with a metal ruler. There's probably some kind of table set up with clamps and blah blah but I can't be bothered to research and execute it I cut out those walls with scissors actually, and for my purposes they'll do alright
The second part I can do I haven't been able to go properly without sleep since college. I stay up till 1, maybe 2, and I'm useless the next day even if I do sleep in
Cork though huh? Maybe that's a good trick. I'm sure there's some kind of desk mounted apparatus that looks like it's meant for torturing flat sheets of stuff that I could also look into but meh, I'm a cheapskate
Why a scroll saw you ask ? Terrainaholic on Youtube does terrain professionaly and he uses a scroll saw, instead of hot wire cutter to quickly cut terrain out of 2" pink insulation foam, much more accurately than I've been able to accomplish with a foam cutter.
If you've never seen his work before, pop around his videos. He's done some very impressive work.
I probably have close to 100 cubic feet on styrofoam stacked against a wall in my basement. They won;t even let me throw it out without taking it to a dump. If the band saw lets me convert it into terrain, that will be a huge step forward.
At the very least it will let me cut it up into more managable chucnks that will fit in the garbage barrel.
Before anyone asks where it all came from, my work used to receive items on weekly basis that came in huge insulated boxes. The boxes were lined on the inside with 2" thick sheets of styrofoam and dry ice. I'd toss the dry ice and bring home the styrofoam sheets..
I don't know why, but I have "I'm hoping Santa brings me a scroll saw" sung to the tune of Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer stcuk in my head...
Anyhow, I think I figured out what I'm goind to cram into those drop pods first.
2 Libby Dreadnaughts (HQs), 4 Furioso Dreadnaughts (Elites), and Cassius the Damned (Death Company Dreadnaught Troop Choice)
I have 2 Plastic Furioso Kits, 1 Metal Furioso, 3 Metal BA Dreadnaughts, 3 AOBR Dreadnaughts, and 3 of the old Lascannon/Missle Launcher Dread arm sprues to make it happen.
I can't recall, can you take Dread Librarians in the Archangel's Detachment? Because then you wouldn't even need Troops, just up to 18 lovely boxy Dreadnoughts ready to kick ass. Although you would lose the Init bonus.
Paradigm wrote: I can't recall, can you take Dread Librarians in the Archangel's Detachment? Because then you wouldn't even need Troops, just up to 18 lovely boxy Dreadnoughts ready to kick ass. Although you would lose the Init bonus.
I don't have it in front of me, but I do believe you can. Unfortunately, the Archangels detachment limits you to 6 Furiosos, no troop choices, and doesn't get the +1I on the charge.
So you could field 8 with the Archangels Detachment as long as they were libbys and Furiosos.
The Baal Strikeforce limits me to 7, but I can choose between regular, Furioso, and Death Company for 4 of them.
Everyone is playing Adeptus Astartes lately, so I'm hoping the +1I letting my dreads strike first will make the difference
10 Russian Tanks, which are really nice.
9 DV Space Marine Bikes, soon to become Blood Angels Bikes
1 Blood Angels Vindicator, which was unexpected.
I was rummaging through my models collection and I had about 30 of the RT era beakie marines one of my friends was gushing over, so I gave them to him.
He told me they were expensive on Ebay and he wouldn't accept them as a gift. In order to get him to accept them, I had to accept a Vindicator in trade. I'm not complaining, since I didn't have a Vindicator in my collection.
Oh *those* Russian tanks, I was thinking some kind of historical game but yeah, not-rhino chassis tanks. Sweet *and bikes* plus vindicator, not bad, I am also looking forward to your exploits with those.
EyeamRai wrote:I ended up getting the exact scroll saw you posted. I can't wait to see what you do with yours so I can copy you!
It was too sweet a deal to pass up. I had seen similar ones for $200+ in the local Lowes. I will defintely post some pics of whatever I'm able to create with it. I took the $6.99 shipping, so the expected shipping is some time in the first week of January.
Paradigm wrote:Looking forward to seeing what you do with those tanks, and possibly stealing some inspiration for my own...
Size wize they are a pretty good match for 40K tanks. I'm thinking they are instantly great for anything based on a Chimera hull. The turret options remind me of a Predator tank, and with no conversion I think they would make a great Predator tank, without the side mounted gun upgrades.
As a Rhino Chasis equivalent they are missing the side entry points. That matters little if you want to use them as a base for a Predator, Hunter, Stalker, Whirlwhind, Exorcist, etc... conversion.
Right now, my collection has 3 Whirlwinds that would probably see more use as Rhinos, so I think I'm going to use them as such and mount the Whirlwind turrets on these Technolog Chasis.
Will post pics of course.
GrimDork wrote:Oh *those* Russian tanks, I was thinking some kind of historical game but yeah, not-rhino chassis tanks. Sweet *and bikes* plus vindicator, not bad, I am also looking forward to your exploits with those.
We were talking about the Blood Angels having the option for a "fast" Vindicator, allowing it to move 12" and shoot it's 24" range cannon and I mentioned I should pic one up. What's not to love about a S10 Large Blast with an effective 36" range ?
I'm on a kick of fielding units I haven't gotten comfortable using lately. Last night I fielded a 2,000 point Necron Force without a single scarab or Spyder and my gaming group was suspicious of me being replaced with an alien duplicate. The bikes, drop pods, and Vindicator are all part of that trend.
The Blood Angels force I've commited myself to building, and fielding, consists of bikes, drops pods, libriarian Dreadnaughts, Furioso Dreadnaughts, Death Company Dreadnaughts, and Grav Centurions. All models I have not previously owned, built, painted, or fielded before.
Space Marine Bikers : I decided not to use the heads and torsos that come with Dark Vengeance Bikers. Put in a bitz order to complete my bikers. Saguinary Guard Torsos, Grav Guns, Combi Grav guns, and attack bikes, enough for 2 squads of 6.
Drop Pods I'm starting to feel burnt out marking the templates, connecting the dots, cutting out the templates, then assembling the templates. I'm going to try doing all the steps in bulk.
Also printed out a half sized set of templates to make a drop pod shaped objective marker. Figured it could be a one man escape dop.
Dreadnaughts The Furiosos come with 3 chasis, 1 torso, 2 sets of arms, and 1 set of legs .I must have spent at least an hour last night trying to figure out what bits I would need to completely build all of them, then another hour shopping online for them, before I realised I really don't need that many dreadnaughts in the first place, and then gave up and went to bed.
I did actually buy 1 frag cannon, so I can have 4 frag and heavy flamer drop pod furiosos.
Dropping 4 Furiosos, shooting 3 (S5/6) templates each, in the enemies deployment zone, turn 1, sounds like a thing of beauty.
shasolenzabi wrote:I still say that the pods are brilliant work!
Thanks !!
Needed to find a way to stream line my production. I've started marking 4 sheets of cardstock at a time and it's literally cut down the time to do that process by 75%. I tried cutting more than one sheet at once, but that didn't go as well....
EyeamRai wrote:I'd be sad if someone dropped the 4 Furiosos on me and shot me all up on turn 1.

I play with friends, and they aren't the kind that are uber up to date with the Flavor of the month, but they are pretty cut throat working whatever magic they can with their codex. They are practically begging me to switch from Necrons to Blood Angels, so I feel it's my duty to make them regret that decision
I can't complain about anything though. I'm building a 5 Knight army.
Good man !! I have 5 knights myself. I'm sure once I get my Blood Angels in full gear they'll encourage me to swith armies again, and I plan on hitting them with Imperial Knights.
Honestly though, as much as I love the IK, I think switching to them will be going easy on them. Knights look great and hit ard, but they can't hold objectives very well.

Yes, that is how I do the tread sections for my tanks, the 4 designs at a time, but have to cut one at a time to make it as close to accurate as possible, otherwise it gets a mess!
The knights are incredibly awesome to behold on the tabletop. I was immensely pleased with myself after building and painting my Cearastus Knight Lancer, and it isn't even much of a paint job.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just finished marking out enough hatches for 3 more Drop pods, and a complete set of parts for a half sized drop pod.
I found the scout looking guy that came in the 4th ? edition box set, with the crashed Aquilla Lander, and an extra chalice from Space Hulk. I think they will make excellent Blood Angels themed objective markers.
While going through my stuff, I found an old Predator Baal. Got it in trade a decade ago and never finished it. It's one of the first ones, all metal bits on the original Rhino chasis. It's looks like I must have applies some extra armor to it.
Last night , I yanked the metal heavy flamers off and replaced them with a spare set of heavy bolters. They were left over from an ancient Lemun Russ Demolisher.
Camera died while taking pictures, I'll get some pics up soon.
Painted all the red bits on a Whirlwind and the Baal.
Spilled a bottle of GW Seraphim wash.
Tried to syphon as much of the spilled paint into a squeeze bottle.
Poured rest of Seraphim Wash into squeeze bottle and moved the label over the new bottle.
Painted Seraphim wash over all the details on Vindicator, Whirlwind, and Baal.
Painted some black on the Vindicator and Baal.
Tried some Immolator Bits on a Technolog chasis. The turret looks good, side hatches look okay, but the front and rear GW hatches just don't mesh with the Technolog chasis.
Vindicator with Hunter Killer missle from Technolog Tank
Immolator with Technolog Chasis
Baal with custom extra plating and a Technolog hatch on top
Have enough parts ready to build another 4 Drop Pods. I'm hoping to get them built this weekend and take some comparison shots of them next to a standard drop pod.
The Baal with fresh coats of black and red applied.
Found a MKI Whirlwind I had forgotten about. Applied a coat of P3 Khador Base Red
Put together a mold for custom 32mm bases. I'm not going to crazy rebasing everything, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have 32mm bases on hand for the future.
These days I find it a hassle to actually cast anything, but when I do, it's only takes minimal effort to cast additional molds at the same time.
Ordered bitz to make 20 custom Immortals. The new Necron formations seem fond of fielding large numbers of warriors and Immortals. All my Immortals were the old school metal ones, and I sold them to a friend. Adding these to my forces so I can try fielding the Decurion Recursion formation. It's 2 squads of warriors, and 2 squads of Immortals, with a Monolith that repairs 1d6 warrriors or Immortals each turn.
These aren't exactly scratch builds, but I got excited about the news of the Terminator Genisys Minaitures Game coming out later this year, and figured you wouldn't mind the peak at my collection

Carved a really big 3" tall hill out of styrofoam after wathcing this video. Tried to get some pictures of it in last nights Kill Team battles, but it is still all white and didn't photograph well. Hill's aren't exactly rokkit science, but I never really found any I've made with a hotwire foam cutter all that appealing.
Careful carving, with a fresh razor knife, gave much nicer results. Monday morning I'll fire up the paint brush and give the hill a few layers of paint, and then take some more pics.
Incidently, 2 Space Marine Tactical teams pretty much rock in Kill Team missions. Faced off against Tau Fire warriors, then later on a Tau Stealth Suit Team, and won both matches with bolter fire.
Yeah man - can't wait for the Terminator game - more excited about that then any other game... ever... (hence why I started the N&R thread ) Impressive collection though and you certainly got a head start on the rest of us...
GrimDork wrote:Seems like tacticals would do well in that points range, harder to bring lots of ap3 guns to nuke them all.
That is true. I was expecting to see more Marines and Scouts on the field, but people really suprised me. Two Tau Teams, One Chaos Cultists mob, Sisters, Dark Angels, and my Blood Angels.
The Dark Angels player got crushed, the Sisters player went 50/50, and my Blood Angels went undefeated.
Ruglud wrote:Yeah man - can't wait for the Terminator game - more excited about that then any other game... ever... (hence why I started the N&R thread ) Impressive collection though and you certainly got a head start on the rest of us...
Thanks !
I'm really excited about it from a modelling aspect, and I'm trying to be optomistic from a gaming aspect. My miniatures collection is littered with tabletop games that I bought and only played 2-3 times because no one else in my gaming circle jump on board with them.
Thank you for starting the TG thread. I may have missed out on the game otherwise.
I'm toying with the idea of making 6-12 10" gaming tiles, the first of which is man made hill, cleverly disguised as a fuel depot.
My terrain collection has gotten to be quite extennsive, but a lot of the individual pieces would fit on top a CD. My gaming buddies don't know what to with anthing that isn't a building or ruins. The plan is build scenic 10" tiles that should make putting together an attractive tabletop easier.
So you're basically making area terrain out of your smaller/scatter pieces since the others have trouble placing smaller features? Makes sense I guess.
Imagine a 4ft x 4ft table filled exclusively with terrain mounted on CDs spaced 6" apart. It was functional, but I was dissapointed when I saw it.
GrimDork wrote:So you're basically making area terrain out of your smaller/scatter pieces since the others have trouble placing smaller features?
Something like that.
The 10" tiles seem like a good way of avoiding that, while giving me room to make bigger pieces that tell more of a story.
I haven't actually recycled any of my existing pieces yet, but it's probably a good idea.
Speeds up set-up time too.
Definite plus, I hadn't really considered.
EyeamRai wrote:That hill looks pretty sweet!
Thanks. Dwez mentioned man made hills in his P&M blog, and I liked the concept. A piece of terrain that functions pretty much like a hill would, but appears to be built.
The man-made hill thing also benefits from some nifty synergy. In making it man-made you can have lots of hard angles and or flat surfaces, making the terrain more accessible and viable for placing minis... while at the same time explaining away those angles and surfaces as intentional so as to gain both functional terrain *and* style points
Decided that, I needed 12 Imperial Fists for Kill Team.
2 Episodes of Gangland, 1 Justice League Animated Movie, and an episode of Vikings later, I have an Imperial Knight with magnetized weapons options. Not really sure how that happened.
Maybe he's like one really big Imperial Fists Marine.
I think it had something to do with it being too cold to go outside and spray paint a base coat on, and the Imperial Knight being an arms length away.
Self, we need Imperial Fists. Dude, it's really cold out. How's about you work on that Imperial Knight?
Self, okay, but just until this show is done, and then we get cracking on those Imperial Fists Dude, sure....whatever you say buddy
We've all been there.
7:00PM- just a few more minis and my BA are done..
12.00PM- Oh, I seem to have ended up with 400 points of Raven Guard... How the did that happen?
Okay, this is what is sitting on my desk at the moment.
My Cerastus Knight Lancer got bumped around and needed minor repairs. Also want to get more paint on him, but I really don't know what I want to do. At the very least I am going to highlight some of the metal bits with silver edging, and some copper.
The newly built and magnatized Imperial Knight Errant, and the beginings of a Dreadnaught Drop pod.
I took the exiting templates and just cut an inch into them to leave space int he middle. Just need to figure out how to the interior side of the doors.
It didn't leave much to secure to the base. Plan on leaving a 1/2" trangle of extra wall at the base on the next attempt.
Magnetizing the Imperial Knights gun was easy. Small metal plate in arm, and 1/4" magnet in the gun. Can swap between Errant and Paladin configurations in seconds.
Teaser of next terrain tile.

Managed to get in a 4,000 point 40K battle last night, in about 4 hours. My Necrons verses a Space Marines army tailored to fight them. We left out the super heavies and played with Objectives, Slay the Warlord, Line Breaker, and First Blood. The match was dead even until round 4, but ended 3 points in my favor. Victory came down to me blasting him off of 2 of his objectives in turn 5, and linebreaker.
About half way through building a bike squad. Just need to attach the gun arms and heads, as soon as I can find where I left them.
Started building a new piece of terrain. A stepped Necron pyramid, about 16" across and 9" tall.
Promised myself I would sit down this week and cast bases. I have 6 Canoptek Spyders that are not properly based, and I can always use more Scarabs. Also have a new 32mm base mold I haven't tried out yet, and want to use for my next squad of Immortals.
Did some detailing to the Cerastus Knight Lancer, but it didn't photograph well.
GrimDork wrote:4 hours? Seems about right, used to take me that long to play half or less the points.
We each had a partner, so it spead things up some. I guess you could call it a doubles match.

I get knocked down, but I get up again. you're never gonna keep me down...
Nope, wait Reanimation Protocols just got nerfed, so I'm pretty sure you're not getting back up buddy
Just so this is on topic. Had a minor sugery on my leg Monday morning and I've been out of it. Today, I managed to assemlbe 5 Lychguard with Warscythes, repaired about a dozen Nexcron Warriors that damage to their guns, and turned 2 broken warriors into Flayed Ones.
I've got a follow up appointment in the morning, but after that I'll try to take and post some pics of the Necron stuff and some rocky terrain I've carved recently.
Semi-related, I signed up for a 7 day trial of the miniwargaming site, and have been burning through their DVD collection of videos. To be honest, It's nothing Earth shattering, but it is giving me ideas on some things I'd like to try out in the future.
Now that Flayed Ones are the bees knees, I rummaged through my bag of holding to see what I could find. A dozen vintage metal Flayed Ones were discovered, and immediately pressed into service. With 4 attacks each and reanimation protocols backing them up, they are significantly more useful than they have been in years.
Now it might just be OCD on my part, but since the maximum squad size is 20, I'd like to have 20. With their sudden rise in effectiveness, their price on the decondary market has risen. Since I like building things, and being cheap, I took my bitz box..
I found my Junk crons. All those crons I got in trades over the years that either looked like crap or were broken in transit have been sittting there for years waiting for me to do something with them. I found 8 of the worst and decided to turn them into Flayed Ones.
I never really was a fan of the old Flayed Ones models. The metal ones are sculpted in a pose that facillitates being cast in metal, but looks really unappealing. The Finecast ones better posed, but are over the top with the amount of flesh and bones they are wearing.
So here is what I did: Cut off the Gauss Rifle, leaving the hands. Remove the middle two fingers, using a razor, and or a file. Cut and glue together 3 claw fingers, that would make Freddy Krueger smile, from some thin card. Trim the bottom edged of claws to match hand size. Glue claws to hands. Go reap and consume flesh....
Editted the the above post, so that it more closely resembles me speaking, without being under the effect of painkillers.
While looking for those bodies to convert into Flayed Ones, I realised I had quite a few unfinished Necron models that I completely forgotten about. Things I should probably get around to finishing in the near future.
3 Night Scythes - 2 Partially Built, 1 in the box
3 Ghost Arks - all unbuilt
5 Old School Metal Destroyers - assembled, unpainted, and most likely going to see battle as Tomb Blades in the near future. Need to paint and rebase them.
24 Plastic Destroyers - various types and conditions, all need paint and basing
100+ warriors - I fixed the ones that could be fixed, converted some that couldn't into flayed ones. My collection encompassed models I had gathered from multiple trades and Ebay auctions so they have a wild assortment of paint jobs. Blue and White, Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gun Metal, White, and even though I can't tind them at the moment, I swear I had a squad of Red ones as well. I sat down and tried to sort them into logical groupings based on squad size and paint job. The Silver, Bronze, and Blue warriors I like, and I started adding detail work to. The rest seem destined for a complete repaint.
Those Flayed One conversions are really nice, far better than my own attempt at the same from a few years back. If I had any spare Crons, I'd certainly be trying it.
Crafted a really long post, hit reply, and it vanished.
Short Version: Felt like gak, had little free time, working on a Necron Scarab Farm with 70+ bases of Scarabs and 10 Spyders, that will give my opponent of the week nightmares. Don't feel bad for him, he's been running a Space Marine list tailored to fight Scarab Farms.
I've previously run 3 groups of 3 spyders, each maintaining a seperate scarab swarm. Now with the new codex, I plan on having 10 Spyders focussing on a single Scarab swarm , with 4+ reanimation protocols, growing it in number by 10 bases per round.
There is no limit to how many scarabs can be added in game, other than 1 scarab base per spyder, per turn.
That's why I'm also taking a CAD with 9 Spyders
I've run the numbers, and I figure between the CAD and Canoptek Detachment I could squeeze in a maximum of 36 scarabs in the list, and add theoretically up to 60 during the game, for a grand total of 96 bases. So I'm setting my goal for 100 scarab bases in my collection.
After working out my list CAD + Decurion + Canoptek Swarm + Flayed Ones only left me room for 12 scarabs in the starting force. I could drop the flayed ones for another half dozen scarabs, but it worked well enough.
I've done lots of casting and glueing, but not much painting, so no new progress pics.
Did get these lovelies from Ebay
Was watching an old IdicBeer video on youtube, and I noticed he had converted some of these Incredibles OminDroids into Necron Models. His looked realy great so I shopped for some myself. Most were ridiculously priced for McDonalds toys, but I found this one lot of 7 quite reasonabely priced, with free shipping, so I jumped on it.
I've been toying with these VDR rules, but if they aren't too big, I may just proxy them as a squad of Necron Wraiths.
Warboss_Waaazag wrote:They definitely look neat. Might have to find some of those for my Orks.
I could defitnitely see an Ork head popping out of that top hatch. If I didn't already have a dozen unpainted kustom ork Cans and Dredds, I'd give that a whirl myself.
GrimDork wrote:Yeah those are pretty cool, and aren't really that far from the necron aesthetic.
Absolutely agree. I also really like how it's a move away from the humanoid form.
Just finished building
5 Lychguard with Warscythes
5 Lychguard with Sword and Shield
5 Praetoreans with Rods
5 Immortals with Gauss
Going to head down cellar now to prime them, and try to get some serious painting time in tonight.
Been using the 32mm bases I cast up last week on them. They defitinely do look better on the 32mm bases. The only downside to using the 32s is that when they are ranked 6 models across they are a full inch wider than when on the 25mm bases.
So it may lead to 1 less model in an assault in a tight space, but I think the overall improvement in appearance will be worth the trade off. Necron models are notorious for hanging off the 25mm bases.
Also got my 7 Omnidroids, and spent last night removing the Syndrome models from up top. I'll take a size comparison pic once I can find my sole assembled Wraith
model.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Got side tracked by the wife and kids, and ended up working on Warhammer 40K Necron Canoptek Spyders instead.
My regular opponents have learned to hate seeing these across the table from them.
Same models from above, after I unpacked them and arranged them to get a better look at them.
On the far right is a custom model, I can only imagine is a Necron Version of the Vindicare Assasin
Been spending my time lately making storage containers for my Necron Legions, and planning out my Daemon Army.
My Necrons were all over the place, and now they are together and much better organized. Never did a head count before, and now that I have, I'm scared.
I've got two more shipments of Necrons incoming, one heavy with Lychguard and Pratoreans, the other with Tomb Blades and an Obelisk.
That is a veritable boatload of necrons considering what you already have... you could quite literally choke multiple horses to death I should think....
Fixed the link to the Maelific Tokens, hadn't realised it was broken. Now you can link to the full sized image.
----
The Necrons just keep piling up. Every so often I've just walked into a deal where someone offers me their army at a price too low for me to pass up on.
That list just included what was assembled. I still have Warriors, Scarabs, Scythes, Arks, Immortals, Lychguard, an Obelisk, Tomb Blades, Wraiths, and Praetoreans to put together.
I want to say it's my largest army, but I'm not interested enough to inventory the silly amounts of Marines and Orks I have to verify it.
This stuff tends to pile up if you collect it for 20+ years.
Yeah, that's true. I've been in the hobby for awhile but I've also had extensive periods of drop-out or purchase droughts. I suppose those numbers aren't really that high if I consider all of the silly kickstarter stuff I have laying about.
Grim, I've seen your Infinity and Mantic purchases... mine are just more focussed on a singular faction.
Trust me though, I didn't set out to accumulate a hoard, just ended up being fortunate enough to catch a good deal on an army's worth at time 3 or 4 times.
Now, I just need to find a few people tired of playing Daemons
GrimDork wrote: Yeah, if I actually had a good 40k community, my stuff may be along the same lines as your own.
I had to trick my friends into playing, giving them print outs of the rules they needed and letting some of them borrow my armies to play. Once they got a taste, they were hooked.
Did this for my own personal amusement
Gaming Table, 48" across, with enemy on their 12" deployment line border
6 Canoptek Spyders and a swarm of scarabs ready to dash across the board
Spyders moved up 6" and spawned Scarabs. Each scarab base is placed as far forward as possible while remaining within squad coherency and within 6" of the Spyder that created it.
The Canoptek Scarabs spawned furthest out should now be 12" into the center of the battlefield.
The Canoptek Scarabs then advance 12"
The view of a satisfied Necron General
I'm still planning on summoning a Daemon Army, and it's come to my attention that Daemons love Void Shield Generators. The one I was originally working on it loosely based on the limited edition model, but I feel it looks a bit too much like Imperial Standard Template Construction Technology to look like something Daemons would create. The one on the left if the first steps of an Arcane Void Shield Generator. It mostly came about after I had the idea of a spinning Chaos Icon being the focus of the Generator.
I don't know how familiar you are with Chaos Daemons, but the Portaglyph basically is a portable a Star Gate. You throw in on the ground and it has a 50% chance each turn to poop out 1d6 Daemons.
Happy with the basic shape, so I added a Tzeentch emblem, and the compulsory spikey bits
The Tzeentch emlbem is 4 layers of thin card
Added even more spikes and capped the towers
Before the Kings Of War 2 Kickstarter I had little interest in Chaos Daemons. The kickstarter got me to dig out every Demon model I owned to field as Forces of the Abyss. They sat in a box until recently, when I'm was starting to get burnt out building, painting, and fielding Necrons. I started a thread for the discussion of that army, and figured out the shopping list of models I'll need to field it. In the mean time, I intend on amusing myself by fielding a force of proxy and converted miniatures to get the battlefield experience with them I'll need to take them to victory.
Bigger and meaner than any Daemon of Tzeentch model, it's an action figure from one of those Japenese TCG TV shows, I picked up in the clearance isle at ToysRus. I'll be using him to proxy for Kairos Fateweever until I can get my hands on an official model.
This fellow used to part of some creepy looking Centaur action figure I picked up in a Cumberland Farms convenience store, a decade ago at least. The horse half was huge and clunky so I figured I replace it with a serpertine tail. I'm planning on using his as a Daemon Prince
Great find on that Tzeentch-y action figure! Any idea what it's called? I may track one down and use it as a place holder for big blue birdy daemons too
My Googlefu is strong today. The action figure is from the Redakai series and it's name is Harrier.
$10 MSRP, which is still about $35 cheaper than a Daemon Prince or Greater Daemon.

The Gray Demon was, I kid you not, from a keychain I bought in Electronics Boutique. I believe he may have been a vidoe game villain.
The model base coated Black on the far right, is the Marvel Comics Character Dragon Man. His torso and legs are die cast metal, and the sword I added from some random action figure.
I've raided my Mage Knight, larger than any person should own, collection for suitable models for Irridescents, Icon Bearers, Musicians, and Heralds. What is grinding to a halt is Incursion. I just don't think I have anything that makes suitable proxies for the Elite and Fast Attack options Chaos Daemons have. Don't get me wrong, it's always been part of the plan to buy actual GW models, but with the sheer stupid numbers of things you can possibly summon during a game, it's not reasonable, or realistic, to buy and paint that many models in an amount of time that would make me happy about doing it.
Just redoing the core 1500 point army I play at a unit a week would take 3 months, and doesn't include ANYTHING that would be summoned. I was easily adding 2-4 units per turn to the board, sure some of them were just single models like heralds, but GW's heralds cost as much as a unit of basic daemons.
So the plan.... I'm going to continue conveting models, but I'm now going to direct my purchases foccusing on the Elites and Fast Attack. When I get enough of those, I'll eventually turn around and start replacing my proxied/converted forces.
I'm also thinking of sculpting and casting my own Screamers of Tzeetch. If I can cast my own Screamers it will give me something useful to summon with Incursion, and I can make my first GW purchases Fateweaver and Greater Daemons. I shold probably nab a few greater Daemons before GW goes all plastic Bloodthirster kit crazy on them and doubles their price.
Honestly... unless you really like the Greater Daemons GeeDubz sells I HIGHLY alternate models. Here are some alternatives (albeit most at around the same price as the new thirster, but mostly because the models are amazing and in resin)
For the Blood Thirster you can stick with a GW model and save a ton of cash by going with the LOTR Balrog which even looks better than the newer more expensive Thirster.
Another option that costs a bit more is either BaneBeast Krull (first) or Ultraforge Greater War Daemon (second)
For Lord of Change there is not many bird daemon models other than GW and Ultraforge Vrock. I own one of the Vrock (check my avatar ) and I am puting up this picture because he is HUGE (nearly half again as large as GW model) but SOOOOO worth it.
Keeper of Secrets has several options. Spoiler'd for a bit of NSFW boobage... it is slaanesh after all
Spoiler:
Ultraforge Pleasure Daemon is not bad, fits more as a flying DP.
Bane Beast Euryalia fits KoS perfectly. I own both of these models, and like the vrock, VERY worth it.
Great unclean one is obviously the easiest to proxy, it seems nearly every company sells a NotNurgle greater daemon but some of my favorites,
BaneBeast Blood Maw - could use some extra nurglefying but this model is AWESOME
Ultraforge has two nice models. Plague Daemon (first) and Greater Plague Daemon (second)
I realize you prefer cheaper than GW stuff rather than more expencive stuffs but as a fellow Daemon player... they have GREATER in their name for a reason... they are SUPPOSED to be epic.
Thank you for sharing those. I was aware of Ultraforge but I had not previously heard of those Bane Beast models. They are all truly epic. I'll keep them in mind as upgrade options.
After my first game with Chaos Daemons, I realised that I probably couldn't have enough Heralds. For the price of 1 Warp Charge and 1 wound you can summon another herald with 30 points of upgrades. For a Daemon Factory list, that's another level 2 psyker and 2 more attempts at drawing possesion. Digging through my Mage Knight collection I found some great looking Draconian models that I thought would fit the bill.
These are Whelp Alchemists. I'm experimenting with a quick and simple way to pink them up using a white base coat, followed up by a wash of GW's Carroburg Crimson Shade. I'm shooting for a quick tabletop standard, since I have hordes to paint,a nd I think this looks nice enough.
I have about 50 D&D Dretch Miniatures and a dozen Lemures I used as pink horrors. Each is only monopose, so it left the units without Irridescents, Icon Bearers, and musicians, which is unfotuante since those are free upgrades when you summon them. The Shyft faction from Mage Knight had this whole Draconian and Avian look to them, so I'm repurposing them as pink horror command models.
Just raided Toll & Toad's Mage Knight singles. I can now field up to 10 sets of Pink Horror's Command and Heralds.

I dig it, another smart use of repainted prepaints. And I appreciate that your spammed heralds use the same model over and over, feels somehow fitting
Also: my Harrier gets here tomorrow thanks to Amazon Prime, and may well become a Lord of Change until I finally get my Vrok built

Almost bought a second one myself. Glad I was able to help you out with that.
I set aside a bunch of Mage Knight stuff that I was going to use for orc and goblin type things and another lot that I was going to use for vampire counts. I wonder what I did with them...

Non GW products made without finecast crap plastic! That Harrier is awesomeness!!!

I actually thought about doing that this morning, but he's one head short. Anyways, I'll eventually pick up a Fateweaver model either at a discount on Ebay, or I'll ask for one for Father's Day. Harrier will end up serving as Greater Daemon of Tzeentch. Still debating getting him a twin.

adamsouza wrote: No one seems to complain when my custom Daemons are bigger than the actual GW models.
There was however a protest when I tried to summon a RT era Great Unclean One. I plan on building him a Palaquin to beef up his height.
That would work, I mean they used to do so, and also, they can be whatever sizes they desire to be, may even reflect the power from their sacrifice to them. or the worshippers own prayer power.
Googling for ideas for scratch built daemon stuff, I dredged up a tutorial here on DakkaDakka for a Chariot of Tzeentch
Click on the picture for link to the tutorial
I flat out refuse to pay $40 for a herald on a disc, and was planning on building my own, but I hadn't really thought about the chariot, until now.
In the interest of scratch building, and keeping the cost of my Daemons army down, I decided to sculpt my own Discs and Screamers of Tzeentch.
Here's a quick Work In Progress pic I took with my cell phone
The disc is going to get more eyes and fangs, but I think the evil manta ray is about done. If you're wondering about the scale, the disc is modelled over a 32mm base. The white bits are made from some cheap home repair putty I bought at Walmart, Lock Tite brand I believe. It get's rock hard and completely unsculptable in 5 minutes. It may be ideal for bits that don't need much detail or that you are going to model over.
I've left them flat on the bottom, and tried to avoid any undercuts, so I can a one piece mold for each of them, and quickly cast as many as I need.
Between 97 and 2003 I cast well over a 1000 miniatures in white metal. All of my 40K friends wanted me to do cast stuff for them and it became more part time job than hobby. Eventually, I just got sick of spending hours casting stuff for my friends for less than minimum wage, after deducting the cost of supplies. The real nail in the coffin was when I had 2 seperate people hound me into doing large commisions for them, back out at the last minute, and then try to get me to teach them how to cast for themselves.
To this day, any time I mention casting stuff for myself, I have at least 2-3 people trying to get in on the action. I think that alone has become the major reason I haven't done any serious casting in years.
I've grown to prefer plastic models. No need to pin everything, model glue easier to use than super glue, and the plastics are usually attractively enough priced that it's not worth the time and money to make them in metal.
Also did some resin casting. Worked out well on big models, like vehicles, but I never had much luck with resin and 28mm miniatures.
Ahh... yeah that sounds like it would get pretty annoying.
I've got a little resin casting kit, thought I would make some extra details for my battlezones scenery if I could think of anything to do, and maybe some wee tidbits for other models.
Just a heads up, casting supplies have a shelf life that they don't put on the bottles. Resin is the worst once it's gotten any air in the bottle, and I've had mold material that wouldn't mix right after months in storage. I'd recomend only buying resin and RTV mold material when your about to do a project.
If you already have some sitting around, I'd suggest using it, instead of saving it for a rainy day and inspriation.
Ahh huh good to know. Of course if time kills it then the work is likely already done since it probably set on the shelf for a good while before I ever bought it.
Got a few nice compliments on it already, and I gak you not, one of the guys who always used to ask me to cast for him has already asked me about casting these and has offered to buy some
Anyone know where I can get cheap bulk bases with flight stands ?
Decided to summon another screamer
If she had claws, she'd be like a giant sized Daemonette, and I could use her as Keeper of Secrets, or a Daemon Prince
Then I thought, hey, I could use a bigger Great Unclean One
And antother Keeper of Secrets
Wife being home today threw off my schedule today, but I did manage to get some modelling in last night by forgoing about 4 hours of sleep.
Cut the faces off of 10 Krugg models and started sculpting Plague Bearer faces over them. It looks pretty promising so far.
Sculpted a Beast of Nurgle face onto a Crypt worm. It looks good, but I kind of like the faceless Crypt worm look better.
Got the mold made for screamers and disc. Tomorrow I hope to get in at least 3 castings, so I can clean them up, base them, and filed them on Saturday.
The beast of Nurgle conversion I'm working on alongside the base model for comparison.
The Plague Bearer conversions I'm working on.
Bigger eyes, more plague bearerlike heads. I'm also going to add horns to each of them. The one carrying the rock is going to be a musician. I'm going to scult a screaming mouth on the rock, so he esseniatially carries around a singing/screaming rock.
Mold of screamers and Disc. I put it together quickly, and probably could have squeezed a few more bits into it. I carved a 32mm base in the bottom right corner, to make better use of the space.
adamsouza wrote: The beast of Nurgle conversion I'm working on alongside the base model for comparison.
I'd keep 'em faceless myself, because I like the look and it means less work. But if your goal is to convert 100% of your daemonic things, then I dig the face work
Already customed up 2 more with faces. Wanted to be able to summon up a matching squad of 3. Decided to wait until after I paint them up, and a squad of 3 faceless ones to compare to, before I make my final decision.
EDIT: re-read Maelific, and there is no way to summon Beasts of Nurgle. Still going to finish them, but they are suddenly much less useful.
Sculpted the faces with greeen stuff. The eyes are 3mm Half Round Beads. The bases are 40mm bases I cast. The finish on the base is PVA with superglue to give it that weird organic texture to simulate the Beasts of Nurgle slime trail. I'm going to see if I get the GW Nurgle Technical paint that looks like slime to finish it off.
Discs of Tzeentch WIP
Screamers of Tzeentch WIP
First batch of Screamers I cast up this morning. Lost a few horns on the first few because I got impatient and pulled them out too early.
Flight Stands Mold WIP
I realised I was going to need flight stands for all these Daemons, and I didn't want to use the flimsy GW flight stands, so I cooked up something beefier. These bases will accept a rod, the same diameter of a Bic Pen, which I have about 50 of sitting in my conversion bitz box.
EyeamRai wrote:I'm looking forward to seeing the custom Keeper of Secrets models all painted up.
There is a bit more sculpting to do for each of them before I start painting, but I'm pushing to have them done in the next week or two.
I've actually gotten more sculpted on each of them since I took that picture.
It's possible that I've been watching too much iZombie, but I'm really considering painting them with a white skin tone.
My Pink Horrors are pink.
My Tzeench stuff is purple.
My Nurgle stuff is Green.
Khorne stuff, if I ever field any, would be red.
So I'm really considering white for my Slaanesh stuff.
Only hurdle there is I've never really painted white models, other than drybrushing white over a black base coat.
GrimDork wrote:Goodness, they're nice and large.
Not only do they look more impressive, towering over the other models, but it helps cuts down any argument of modelling for advantage.
Spoiler:
Another Dakkite Fallinq has evidently used the Reaper Storm Giant as a Keeper of Secrets
I kinda wonder if we both had the same bright idea, or he took inspiration ffrom mine.
Soulgrinder Barbie is on my to do list. No where near the top, but she's on there now. Previously, I was thinking of using a WOW succubus action figure for the top half, but Barbie is definitely creepier. Already have some work done one the mechanical legs. I figure I'll make the leg in 3 parts and cast them as needed.
Some progress pics of the Greater Daemons I'm working on. Any ideas before I star painting them ?
Head of a Bloodthirster, torso from a die cast Dragon Man, legs and lower arms from a Dragon
Gargoyle Torso, legs from a Die cast Dragon Man
Torso from Demon Action Figure, lower Arms from Daemon Prince, Lower Body sculpted out of green stuff
Reaper Bones Storm Giant, Claws and Horns sculpted in Green Stuff
Added some bulk to the Great Unclean One. Really trying to make sure he doesn't end up with any severe undercuts, so I can cast additional copies of him, one he's done. I don't really have any room in my current list for Nurgle forces, other than those summoned, but having found it realatively easy to customize as many beasts of Nurgle as I need, I'm slowly working on an all Nurgle themed army as well.
Base coated all of the Keepers of Secrets. Probably going to go see Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend, instead of gaming, so I have two weeks to get them ready for battle.
Last night, while watching Daredevil, on Netflix, I put together my first attempt at a Soulgrinder leg. I figure if I do it correctly, I can make a mold and cast as many as I need.
I'm happy with the dimensions. Just need to bulk it up a bit, and add more detail.
I've been looking forward to seeing how some paint pulls all those different bits together - as it turns out, rather well I don't think you gave a parts breakdown on the rightmost keeper, where did his head come from? Asian-y dragon thing?

Thanks !
I know the multicolored plastic was throwing it off for some people.
I don't think you gave a parts breakdown on the rightmost keeper, where did his head come from? Asian-y dragon thing?
That's an easy one. I't a Glabrezu Miniature from the Giants Of Legend expansion to the D&D Miniatures Game.
Kind of kicking myself now, since I used to have 3 of them, but now only have the one. They make pretty much perfect Keeper of Secrets with no conversion.
Safari LTD has a line of Fantasy Figures based on Greek Mythology. The detail is great and they aren't the cheapest, but much less than a comparable sized GW miniature.
In any case, I was in my local AC Moore when I spied this greater Daemon sized forbidden beauty, Medusa.
$11.99 MSRP and I'm heading back tomorrow with a 55% off coupon.
I have, but between Greater Daemons, Daemon Princes, Necron Sypders and Destroyers I've used like 20 of them and I'm currently out.
I was just annoyed because I have at least 50 of each 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 30+ 50mm, over a dozen 75mm, 20mm, and 30mm, within arms reach and I'll have to go through the bother of casting more.
The 60mm is big enough that I only have a single base mold for it. I'll end up casting additional 25s, 32s, and 40s with each one.
I did pick up Medusa, and I have an idea for an out of the box Great Unclean One
I know Great Unclean Ones are usually fat, but I can picture this Cyclops as a giant sized Nurgle Plague Bearer
Bwahahah. Sounds like you guys enjoy pushing the limits so it works out. Not like you're frightening new players away from joining the game by spawn-camping the gamestore or anything (though you'd probably be saving them a fortune in the long run..).
The Scarab Farm came into play as my best defense against the most tailored lists they could come up with. I originally had very Necron Warriors heavy lists, with a single unit of scarabs, and no Spyders. Then they started tailoring thier lists to dismantle my warriors. I found that scarabs were useful as tarpit, and started adding more of them to my lists. Then they started tailoring their lists to wipe out my scarabs faster, so I added the Spyders. It just got to be an arms race where they were fielding fewer, more epensively equipped models, verses my cheap hordes in increasingly large numbers.
I've actually given them advice on how to counter the scarab menace, but they won't take it. 20 Terminators with Thunderhammers and Stormshields with 10 Centurions may kill lots of stuff, while being hard to kill themselves, but their inconsequential when I can just tarpit them long enough with scarabs, while the rest of my army claims objectives and picks off the remainder of their forces.
Just finished up some casting and spray painting on base coats.
I did cast up the 2 60mm bases I needed for the models I'm working on at the moment, but I still need to do more.
My total for screamers is up to 21, although I only have 9 assembled and painted, so far.
I cut back on casting disks of Tzeentch, still have 10 total, only 3 painted with riders.
Because I didn't want to waste casting materials, and only had so many molds to choose from, I have another 10 bases of scarabs.
Just bought two beyblade toys in the dollar store for their avian heads. Have an idea for a custom Fateweaver.
Becasue I can't figure out how to hold a video camera and work on my models at the same time...
Part where I forgot to take pictures of metal wires being inserted into all the holes I just Drilled
If this is doing it wrong, I don't want to be right.
I've looked at those Safari toys plenty of times. My wife works at AC Moore. I'm glad to see her getting put to good use!
Reads...Reads again...Ohhh he means Medusa
--
Just off the phone with one of my gaming buddies, who just got started a Tyranids army. He's going to pick up my Deathstorm tyranids and provide me with the cheddar I needed to secure Fateweaver, Belakor, and some other daemony goodness, er evilness ?
I'm not going to make any more wife jokes, out of fear of being turned to stone.
Bought a Posiedon for $4, at AC Moore, and 2 Backugan top mosters things in the Dollar Store. Both of the monsters have avian heads. I figure I'll make a custom Fate Weaver model, and then use it as a Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, or Daemon Prince, when I get my Fateweaver.
He looks like he is spellcasting with his left hand, and his right hand already clutches a pole arm.
That is the truth. I don't I've ever expanded an army at this rapid rate before. Since most of the models are conversions of models I already own, or models I'm casting, there are significantly fewer delays between adding units. There is no way I could have afforded to expand an army this fast at GW prices. Having simplified my painting process has been a great time saver as well.
A work in progress pic of my Fateweaver custom.
I feel the two heads being different better served the chaos theme. The head of the staff started out as the handle on the pull cords of the toy the head came from.
GW's pricing can be insane, but aside from this Chaos Daemon Army and my Ork Vehicles, all my other armies are GW models. I really do like the aesthetic, and I'm usually patient enough to find deals on the models I need.
Painting related. Tried base coating 9 Screamers pink instead of white, then applied Drutchi Violet, then immediately decided it was best to wipe off as much as possible, and then rebase coat them white.
Did a quick inventory of my Chaos Daemons, and it's something close to 5,000 points
Blood Thirster
Keeper of Secrets x6
Great Unlcean One x3
Changer of Ways
Fateweaver
Daemon Prince of Tzeentch
Herald of Tzeentch 10+
Herald of Slaanesh
Pink Horrors 100+
Screamers of Tzeench 29+
Beasts of Nurgle 3+
Plague Bearers 10+
Daemonettes 10+
Furies 10+
The worst part is that I don't feel that I'm even close to finished.
I know I still want to add:
Belakor
Daemons Princes dedicated to each god
Plague Drones
Nurglings
Soul Grinder
more Screamers of Tzeench (Have materials just need to spend the time casting)
more Beasts of Nurgle (Have conversion fodder just need to spend the time converting)
more Plague Bearers (Have conversion fodder just need to spend the time converting)
more Daemonettes (Waiting for Mantic Succubi to arrive)
I was able to exercise some restraint earlier today, and resisted the urge to build an Astra Militarum force out of Dust Tactics minaitures.
They are pre-painted and on clearance. There were enough models for 2 60 man infantry companies in my shopping kart before I talked myself out of it.
Mostly the models that people are converting over to Adeptus Mechanicus all dissapeared, but the the 5 man infantry packs for $3.99 were still there and a solid deal.
I already have a crap ton of Astra Militarum models that I haven't painted, and pre-painted seemed a brilliant idea. To be honest, if I had a little more disposable income at the moment I would have jumped on it.
Kill Team taught me I could field 55 guard + conscripts for 200 points. I figure whatever future Astra Militarum Force I field that I should spend 1000 points of it to put 275 foot sloggers on the board, and the rest on tanks. It works out to 25 units for 5 FOC slots and 1000 points. They would have to wipe out 5 units a turn, just to deal with troops choices
I don't really play in tournaments, so it's never really been an issue for me. Strategically though, for any army with cheap expendable troops, winning through attrition is usually a viable tactic.
A few of my Space Marine opponents have gotten to the extreme of fielding 2 5 man tactical marines/scouts, plus whatever blinged out cheesy combinations they can dream of, up to whatever point value we are playing.
So your Chapter Master is, on a bike, jinking, and then making, either, a 2+ artificer armor save or a 3+ stormshield save ? That'a cool bro, I'll throw 10 canon fodder guys at him at a time, who have no real chance of killing him, but will keep him busy, away from my important stuff.
My Daemon Prince of Tzeentch. I don't think I've posted any pictures of him painted yet
Until my Mantic Succubi models come in, these crab men are pulling duty as Lesser Daemons of Slaanesh (a.k.a. Daemonettes)
The Champion model has two mighty claws, and the standard has two sets of hands and banner made from green stuff, alluminum foil, and a paperclip.
The Great Unclean Cyclops, now has a rupterd belly, with his guts hanging out and multiple open sores, gashes, and broken flesh.

It's been soo many years since I've seen Inuyasha that I had to google that. 100 internet points BTW.
I bought one of these.
It stands about an inch taller than my Cerastus Knight Lancer, so maybe a bit too big to use as an Imperial Knight, but it was only $20.
I'm thinking of using the fists on my IKs, and converting the chasis into a looted Ork Knight.
Nicely detailed, goes together well, absolute nightmare to play with. It was impossible to reposition it, without knocking something off, and I couldn't find the right pose where it didn't fall over.
I coulda sworn that wasn't how you spelled it... but that's what the wiki said and I watched it in the days before subtitles were as readily available. Yay points.
WHat is that some kind of lego monstrosity? I only ask as the guy standing by it vaguely looks like a lego minifig.
Pretty large and interesting look to it. Shame it doesn't play well, that's the main benefit usually
Same price on amazon, too bad I'm on a spending freeze
Yeah those are both pretty neat I can see why you did.
Right now I'm stockpiling just in case our closing costs end up higher than expected, and to start saving for winter. If it turns out I manage to save more than enough for winter ahead of time.. I can always splurge a bit around black friday.
Having seen how articulated the dreamforge leviathan is (at least the 15mm variant, surely the other one is the same as it looks to be just a resized digital sculpt), I pretty much have to get one of those at some point. Would need the capacitor cooler to look more modern though, and then I'd want all of the stupid fancy arms. And a more scifi-friendly head/cockpit.
I could always settle on the k'nex as above but if they tend to fall apart while you're posing them I dunno if that's what I"m after.
The arms and legs pretty much click into place, but there are all these little detail bits that, while looking cool, barely hold on. As a gaming a model I would simply glue all those into place to solve that issue, but as a kids toy, it's pretty crap.
With the new Imperial Knight's codex floating around, I figured it would be a nice source of parts for proxies.
Dayum. That titanfall thing is HEEE-OOOGE. And for 20 bucks... I may just have to get one... just because.
I was considering getting a leviathan or something to fight my bigass bones not-tarrasque but for 20 bucks that guy may just do the trick... Maybe even too big crap...
So if you consider it 20 bucks a robot (and the ogre is usually 25 on amazon) you get 3 large-ish scifi buildings for 20-25 bucks. Kind of impressive. Tall stuff too, to go with the mechs.
May have to wait for my amazon points to turn over one more time... pretty sweet.
I had seen the terrain in store. The sprocket like pieces in the corners kill it for me. Other than that it looked pretty good.
I'm kicking myself a bit for not picking up some of the larger models in Bones 2. They look great and the KS prices are as cheap as your ever going to get them.
Yeah, that's the main thing keeping me potentially pledging for bones3... The individuals are cheaper than retail but only so much.. but the big dudes... 25 or 35 dollars during KS turns into 75 or better at retail.
I was thinking that if I did get that scenery, it would be assaulted with plasticard and other scratchbuilding materials, probably with some of those sprocket things clilpped or cut away.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So how well does the Atlas articulate? Could you give it a kneeling or sitting position?
Sooooo, in the interest of finishing my Chaos Daemons, I attached wings to my custom Fateweaver, started building an Ork trukk, and got most of the way through building a 10"x17" bridge. Modelling A.D.D. for the win !
I've seemingly always juggled more modelling prijects than I know what to do with, but lately I've been happy to remain focussed on a single army long enough to see results. The Ork truck struck me as particularly random, since I have no intention of playing Orks any time soon.
A joke about playing against myself, while talking to my friends about gaming this weekend, sparked an idea I'm excited about.
A 2,000 point Battle between my Necron Scarab Farm and my Daemon Factory lists
Even plan on taking a ton of pics for an Epic Batrep.
SCARAB FARM - 1st turn charge, grows by 200 points per turn, 4+ RP, mid range fire power
DAEMON FACTORY - PWNs Psychic Phase, grows by roughly 200 points per turn, MC's that Necrons are crap against in assault, zero ranged firepower
Standard lists, no tailoring, will make this a tough matchup.
The bane of the Daemon Factory list is a strong alpha strike army and the Scarab Farm can deliver both a disruptive first turn charge and a respectable amount of fire power.
Scarab Farms crumble against foes who quickly dispatch Spyders and Scarabs. Greater Daemons are great at both of those tasks, while Screamers can fly over the waves of Scarabs and attack the Spyders directly.
---------------------
Looked into a Tyranid list with 4 Tervigons, spawning 12d6 Termagants a turn. It's the stuff of nightmares. Logistically, it's insane to play. Not only buying, assembling, painting, and moving that many models, but just trying to fit 40ish additional models on the board each turn.
My 2nd Ed Tryanid Force had at least a dozen of the old metal Warriros in it. Sold them and the nightmare that was the metal Hormaguants when the plastics came out. I love the new plastic warrior model, but I've never been crazy about using them, other than for synapse.
I had an amazing 2000 point game last night, Chaos Daemons verses Salamanders. My Screamers were on his side of the board, while his drop pods were on mine, turn 1. It was very intense. He kept pressure on my forces, so I couldn't just sit back and summon, and he had soo many flamers and meltas with re-rolls. We played a Maelstrom mission, and things evidently went as Tzeentch planned. He claimed first blood, wiping out a squad of 8 screamers turn 1, but the other squad of screamers would just not die, reguardless of how much firepower he poured into them. There was action all over the board. I am upset that it didn't occur to me to take pictures until it was over. The pyschic phase was all mine, since he hadn't brought any librarians, but it didn't go as well as I would have liked. I was able to manage 5 possessions over the course of the game, but they were all over the board, so I coudn't get any of them to team up. I used a half dozen psychic Shrieks and only one of them managed any wounds, and that was with using fateweavers -re-roll ablity.
Speaking of Fateweaver... He dropped 2 drop pods full of heavily armed marines within inches of Fateweaver and dumped EVERYTHING into Fateweaver. Something like a Dozen melta shots, and a snap firing lascannon that hit, and Fateweaver managed to fly away with only 2 wounds. He ended the game with only a single wound remaining, and it was only through a ton of amazingly fortunate saves that he didn't give up a Slay the Warlord VP. He did manage a single turn where he took out out 7 of his pursuers with a succesful Psychic Scream/Smite combo.
My All-Star was Medusa. She started the game as a herald on a disc, following the unkillable screamers across the board, and blossomed into a Keeper of Secrets in the opponents deployment zone. She single handedly eliminated a Devastator Squad and Predator Tank, leaving the Screamers nothing to do but fly around around her looking kool and soaking up wounds.
Tried Screamerstar, but could not get both the Grimoire and a Cursed Earth on them at the same time. So they ran around with 3+ saves, re-rolling ones, and managed only 2 casualties after the Grimoire holder was murdered in assault by a Dreadnaught.
He conceded the game turn 4, deciding he couldn't close the 8 to 3 victory point gap, certain I was going to add Slay the Warlord and LIne Breaker to my total.
Unrelated, I randomly came across some terrain pics I posted on Heroscapers.com back in 2010
COMIKAZI - Comics and Gaming Shop
Spoiler:
I should mention that if the color looks odd it's because I printed the main building in black and white on yellow cardstock. No color printer was in my possesion at the time. The Color Details were printed on a 4x6 glossy sheet for $.19 at the local 1 hour photo
Comikazi was my favorite local gaming shop from the day it opened till the day they sold it.
I signage is as close to the acutal signs as I could get. The Comic's Fan Parking only sign, was just for fun.
The Iron Man art was just cool looking, and frankly a lot more interesting than a plain brick wall.
Pocket D is an extradimensional Dance Club, from the City Of Heroes MMO. There would be doors in different cities that all lead to the same club that was floating in extradimensional space. You would find Pocket D posters near locations of doorways there.
MC DOOMS- Fast Food Resturaunt
Spoiler:
The Stock Mc Dooms sign is a half Circle. I cut mine down the charecter.
Mc Dooms comes with a hex option, but it's not to scale with heroscape. I printed a blank hex sheet over my roof tile to make it more heroscape friendly.
The stock pole does not come with any base. It's assumed you'll glue it into cardstock, or something similar. I used a blank height 3 single hex and added a concrete texture to it. I then figured out how to cut a space for the pole, leaving the flaps inside, so the glue had something solid to hold onto. Now I have a sturdy base that happens to be Heroscape compatible.
GOLDEN SHIELD - Gas Station
Spoiler:
It may be hard to make out, but the cashier's booth has an actual window. I used transparancy cut down to fit.
The Gas Prices Sign is sandwiched between two layers of clear plastic. It makes it sturdier and more realistic in appearance.
The original poles were square. I used the art, but wrapped it around bic pens to create round poles.
The original roof design is hollow, and flimsy. Mine has 2 layers of foamboard in it making it quite durable and a lot less prone to warping.
The Cola machine is a Heroclix model.
The gas pumps are a hydrid plastic and card model. I liked the head of the streets of mayhem gas pumps, but didn't like the body. I had some plastic gas pumps from a dollar store race car set and figured out a way to jam them together. Then I repainted the plastic bits.
The roof is hexless, but I have a transparency for that.
DRAKES - TV & Radio Repair
Spoiler:
Drakes started out as a free sample from Microtactix for the Twilight Street Terrain line. It was scaled for 1"/25mm gaming, making it too small for Heroscape/Heroclix sized models.
I coverted the PDF to JPGs. Enlarged the building to a proper scale. The orginal model is basically a box, but I decided to make the doorway recessed. I also needed to make custom edging for the roof and doorway to accomodate the foamcore.
I changed some of the colors on the signage and had it printed on a 4x6 Photo at the local 1 hour photo. For $.19 I got glossy signage that was extra durable.
The original file was 25mm scale but I beefed it up and put it back together as a PDF available here
