Yeah pretty much lol..

May get some accessory sprues but you can do better on the forward base at retail with a good sale.

And what amounts to 40 dollars for a battlezone of the long tiles is too much.

Oh man did that joke backfire.

But if you have extra Defense Line Sprue A's, I'll take some off your hands. I'd love to have a bunch of laser cannon.

Yeah, add on Wednesday was pretty much a swing and a miss.

I don't get it. This whole campaign has left me scratching my head. Has it successfully funded? Sure.

Are Mantic satisfied with it? It feels very slow and plodding, whereas most of their campaigns are quite lively and offering up interesting things to keep pledges moving.

I stand by the fact that they want this one to be sedate. They could drop plastic peacekeepers, enforcers and battlezones for individual addons if they wanted it to blow up. Heck, just open up everything from the first campaign.

There's some serious value, the box DZ game plus zombies and expansions is killer compared to walking into a store to buy it...

Quarantine is pretty solid... but yeah they really don't seem to want it to blow up.

That's whatever, more hard plastic for warpath, hopefully at bat-poop-insane prices too...

Still vacillating between 1 dollar, quarantine, and the 200 I pledged Initially.

I really don't know what this campaign is supposed to be anymore.

If this is a Deadzone KS, why so much focus on units of HIPS line infantry (and half on if in a faction that already has the most unit options by far) while specialists are few and made of expensive metal or resin?

If this is a Warpath KS, why even bother with specialists in metal or resin that will be prohibitively priced for the large quantities needed in Warpath?

I think this was all a bit sloppily planned by Mantic. It feels like it's being run by a different group of people, honestly.

If they really wanted to straddle some middle ground between DZ and Warpath, they should have opened with more HIPS and included some resin/restic/metal accessory packs to convert Deadzone specialists that do not appear in Warpath, like Medics, Snipers and Engineers. Instead, we get 15 rats with a total of 4 weapon options between them and the option to buy pricy metals to have at least some variety.

People really need to cut the crap. Adding $500 just to take it away a couple grand after a goal does is no good. Combine that with a bit of unrest and then those 2-3 people that thought they were harmlessly manipulating the system initiated a 6 hr stall.

Better to make Mantic desperate and find a way to earn it.

I not even sure it was a swing. Folks have told them a few things they wanted, and there was little effort to deliver. It's like they forgot the bat......

I agree this campaign is really unfocused and not really what I expected. I don't think Mantic want it to be this slow I just dont think they planned it out as well as the first dz. I really hope we unlock a few more plastic kits( plague troopers?) but I've given up on more factions. At this point I'm mostly excited for rules polish and update. On that Note I don't think this was posted yet:

Mantic comments wrote:
RE: Force Organisation Basically it's a simply chart, say 5 slots. Let's say you play a 500 point game, around 15-20 miniatures a side. You decide to spend it on 4 slots, fielding a Leader, 2 "Squads" of Troopers, one slot including 2 Specialists and a Vehicle. You may spend some of those points on equipment or skills. That's 13 miniatures, one walker and some extras to use in game. These miniatures may all be invididuals, you may have 13 entirely different miniatures each with their own unique weapon. But how do you buy that at retail? At retail, you take this chart and off the shelf you pull a box of Enforcer Troopers, a box of Pathfinders. Both of these are 5 man hard plastic kits with tonnes of options. With the Force Org chart, you can use them all in your game. You might then pick a leader blister, or a booster with the remainder in. This is just an example of where the chart is there to help navigate the range easier for new people, and include all the things you purchase in a force. Two very important things. Purchasing single figures as per a traditional skirmish model is almost impossible with hard plastic miniatures. A couple of other things - firstly, in order to balance the different units, we'll probably introduce a little variation in the points values. To get a wider spread, we'll likely increase the points values of the games, whilst keeping the model count similar. Secondly, this system should be particularly handy for larger games and creating forces that exceed 20 miniatures, as they would in multi-mat games. And finally, we can do funky things to really emphasize the nature of the army. For example, the Veer-myn may have a larger range of slots as they are more of a horde army. Or, we can produce characterful leaders that fight in a particular way. For example, Sergeant Howlett is a very in-your-face Enforcer character, and so he might have a particular slant or bonuses if you include a squad of Assault Enforcers. That type of stuff. The exact system isn't written yet, and we welcome your feedback on it. We don't think it's restrictive at all - rather you keep the skirmish feel of the game as everything is still individual and unique, but it helps us introduce character, flavour and a simple system for navigating our range. Perhaps "Squad" is the wrong name for it, maybe it should be fire team or something like that.

Hey all,

There's an Adepticon Q&A with Ronnie about the Deadzone 2 KS campaign posted on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWlroPS6HYc.

Apparently it has commentary regarding the future of cards in Deadzone at around the 18 minute mark.

My computer's sound isn't working; could anyone summarize what he says about that here?

Dropped my pledge down to the $35 pledge, and im not sure if I'll keep that, but its a good place holder till the pledge manager where I can pick up my vermyn army.
Definitely not found this ks to be as exciting as the other mantic ones, not really seen anything thats must have or amazing.

Plus theres no reason not to wait until pm for getting my stuff, hopefully after seeing some more finished stuff

I have an EB pledge, but am strongly considering dropping to the $35 pledge. I'm not all that impressed or interested in the rat guys. I can pick up a couple of jet bikes and a sprue or two of the humans more cheaply. The terrain looks okay, but I can always pick that up later (I still have a ton unused from the first KS). I do want a hard copy of the new rule book, but I'm wondering if $35 plus shipping is worth it or if I'll be able to pick it up cheaper later.

We'll see.

EDIT: I was also pretty disappointed they did not find a way to throw in one of the mouse pad mats into the Quarantine pledge. If I'm honest, that disappointment has really biased the rest of my thinking about this KS.

I'm OK with it for me, personally. I don't really want ONE red planet mat, but I'm not interested in buying FOUR either. So, saves me some shipping weight and hopefully cost on Quarantine. Paper mat can be easily stored for later use, if I feel like using it, ever. But yeah, adding it to strike team and the original starter box kind of sets up that expectation.

I'll probably keep quarantine and either fit in all of the add-ons I within 200 dollars and add nothing in subsequent pledge managers... or I'll make a short list for the manager and pledge for just quarantine now.

He sounds like he's saying he'd prefer stats be compiled in rosters that players take from stats they had provided in the game book.
He then says some yes-ish/no-ish on whether they would get rid of the cards and breaks off into event type stuff (ala Mars Attacks' Flaming Cows but more 'tactical', more 'strategic) cards for Deadzone.

In short, it's not really a solid answer on stat cards.

Weird thought normally the mantic ks thread is at the top of the list when I jump on dakka, for this ks is seems to be dropping off more than others. A sign perhaps that its just not that interesting. Not to say its a failure, but I was expecting much more this time around. In particular hips for each faction. Then again mantic ks normally explode in the last two days so its wait and see for me

The new Lockdown pledge is a really good deal, save $55 on the cost of faction boosters (compared to quarantine + add-ons), and get deluxe mat and more terrain thrown in as well.

Well Lockdown seems to have done the job up about $5k since the update. Think I'll stick to double EB Quarantine for the extra Pathfinders, VeerMyn and Jetbikes that option gives. Plague Aberration should unlock in a few minutes.

If I can swap out the enforcer and plague boosters that I don't need and double up on chem thrower and beast boosters instead, it's something I'll probably do in the pledge manager. Can't afford $200 out of my pocket all at once this month.

The update says Lockdown will ship for the same price as Quarantine: "Shipping costs for this package are also exactly the same as they are for Quarantine."

The front page says shipping will be: "As a rough estimate, the Quarantine pledge level will cost about $10 to ship in the UK, USA, EU and Canada, and around $25 to Australia and the rest of the world."

So that makes Lockdown an even better deal (probably save $10+ by the end of it).

A bit saddened by Metal. I realize this is suppose to be a more elite unit though and you have to plan for demand.

I think Mantic needs to be smart here. A goal to entice more over to Lockdown (my naming idea!!!) is nice, but then you gotta go back and do a plastic goal that can be thrown in Quarantine for free as well to help fill up all those opening EBs so that come Sunday, they aren't on the final Sprint, and it looks as if they couldn't even fill the initial quota.

Get those people in for a $1 off the fence. Show that Quarantine hasn't run it's course. Stair-step people up through the weekend by making us want to stair-step up.

I'll secede the Kalyshi being in metal. Spindly hunter ladies are probably much more stable in metal. Plus I can't stand fiddling with thin resin.

If they were restic they would be mushy blobs.

HP would have been preferred, but even then, I can't argue too much with the booster being added to the Lockdown pledge, and 5 for $15 is not a bad deal at all.

If you want Asterians...

Unless they go Black Library on the pricing, I would buy a copy. I set aside money for their Dungeon Saga adventure books, but then they decided not to make printed copies. I would buy and read Bloodstone of Cyrillion in paperback if they ever released it. Rulebooks tend to be pricier and have less fluff to make room for rules, so I would not be as likely to buy those.

Jonathan has Bloodstone up for print-on-demand, if you need a hard copy. It's a shame about that cover, but the story inside looks enjoyable from the snippets I've read.

This sums up the campaign for me - every concept art tease is the start of another material and price lotto. A crazy way to run a campaign.

Agreed. I would trade all the metal and resin models in a heartbeat for another sprue or two of veermyn and 1 or 2 sprues from some other factions, preferably Forgefather steel warriors and/or Asterians. I was actually hoping to go heavily in on Veermyn this time around, but the lack of plastic sprues besides the beginning one and then producing every model since in resin (Which I dislike using compared to restic or Mantic's board-game-plastic) or metal (Which I dislike using compared to basically any other material besides silly putty) means I'm now looking more closely at the Enforcer offerings because of the HIPS offerings. I love the cheesy aesthetic for ratmen in space, but I know I'm personally not buying a broodmother, shredder, chem-thrower, or night terror until they're offered in something besides metal or resin.

Apparently this is being teased for this weekend.

Gotta say, I think a hard plastic sprue of stormrage vets-style Forgefathers for Zombie pricing would end up with me probably doubling my pledge for them alone. I love dem dorfs.

I'm going to plunk down a fair bit of cash if those Dwarves wind up happening.

While I like the Asterians, I'm not too keen on the Kaylishi. I prefer my space elves to be sleek and high tech, not half naked and mohawked. One thing I don't think many people noticed though, the 3 pictured in the sketch aren't all female. The one on the right with the bow is a dude.

Don't think we'll be seeing hard plastic Stormrage Vets at all, just Steel Warriors. A shame.

The Kalyshi are probably the least exciting, least wanted Asterian figures they could offer me for a faction I quite like as remote / robot oriented. I can put up with five metal Kalyshi specialists, but I still want my hard plastic battle droids.

The pose is pretty darned goofy. It does not say 'professional soldier' at all.

And if they use the same sculpting team I suspect he inherits the goofy face the rest have, though hopefully I'm wrong and he retains the vicious DreadBall type face.

Through analysis of thousands of recorded gunfights, the Cleric has determined that the geometric distribution of antagonists in any gun battle is a statistically-predictable element.

Maybe Mantic should stop teasing them. They know we want them, but I think they just waited to long. I bet we'll be within 60 hours before we break this 10k goal, and if they broke out the Steel Warriors with a decent deal (15 for $20-25) we'd have it accomplished in the same time frame.

There are also no new add-ons other then an $8 piece that's given to all the spendy backers for free that belongs to the least popular faction at this time. Just sloppy. Why wait on the "freebie" model for Quarantine. You got 300 EBs to fill up and you aren't even trying Mantic. It's like they gotten arrogant after the Dungeon saga campaign and forgot about the end rush disaster that was DBX.

Post by: Talking Banana

It's a pretty good bet that we'll be seeing all of the listed stretchgoals realized, even if this slows to a crawl for some reason. All of them are things Mantic will want in place to drive sales of the products in question (they aren't releasing jetbikes without those extra guns, period, and the spitter makes the expensive resin Veer-myn gun more saleable at retail as well), the forward observer would leave a very bad taste in everyone's mouth if it didn't happen, and the Forge Father sprue is pretty much a foregone conclusion now, unless there is a mass exodus at the end, because if it doesn't fund during the campaign, it will afterwards when people add things on during the Pledge Manager.

Looks to me like Mantic has considered their current course and the books and decided that the Forge Fathers really are the way they want to finish out this campaign. Unfortunately, this means Asterian hard plastic troops probably won't be happening until somewhere in the middle of the Warpath campaign, whenever that happens. I expect if the end rush carries us far beyond the FF that we'll get more specialists, maybe a bunch of individual metal Mercs, as they try to run out the time, rather than any more hard plastic sprues.

Anyway, that pretty much eliminates the tension and drama of this campaign's finale for me. On the plus side, I like everything that's coming, and I'm no longer worried about not getting to any of what's been listed. On the minus side, I really would have liked to see Mantic tackle another hard plastic sprue beyond the FF, funds and momentum permitting, and I don't see that happening. In part, I think it's because $25,000 probably doesn't cover the entire cost of a hard plastic sprue, which is why we get all these overpriced, inflated stretchgoals in between for metal characters and "expanding" sprues that have already been funded; basically we're socking away additional hidden funding for that "$25,000" Hard plastic stretch goal. If the reality of a full hard plastic troop sprue (or two, as may be necessary for some like the enforcers) is closer to $50,000, that would explain Mantic's hesitancy to take on any more beyond the Forge Fathers.

In the end, this all leaves me very pleased with my Lock Down pledge. It is strange how the economics of Mantic kickstarters work out. Mars Attacks, far from one of their most successful KS campaigns, ended up being one of their best deals ever. Deadzone Infestation will likely end up well short of Mars Attack's final total, but even if it doesn't rival the value for money of that KS campaign, it will still rank highly as an exceptionally good Mantic deal. I mean, for $215 I get a hard cover, a deluxe mat, a bunch of hard plastic troops, terrain, a few resin exclusives, and a bunch of other resin and metal figures, which even if you don't care for the materials, you know will be priced higher at retail (particularly the resin - the metals may be issued together in a discounted box like the last batch of metal Deadzone faction characters.)

The one thing that leaves me scratching my head about this endgame is that the Rebs leave this campaign with nothing, when they are the group that seem most in need of help. Even the overpowered Marauders get at least one new figure. The Rebs get access to one Merc that almost everyone else also gets access to. And, despite their popularity, the Sphyr make no appearance. Did the Marauders really need another commando unit - one that, in all likelihood, will look just like the others but with a jetpack - more than the Rebs would have benefitted from a Sphyr melee character? Yeah, I know the Rebs will get an upgrade in the revised rules (or people will stop buying them), but still.

The only downside of this campaign relative to previous ones - and it's potentially a big one - is paying for shipping, but Quarantine is estimated at $10 on the KS page, and we've been promised that Lock Down's shipping costs won't exceed Quarantine's. So we're still probably not looking at this going above $20 for shipping, as you can imagine the backlash / negative publicity for the next campaign if Mantic says, "oh, by the way, shipping will cost more than double our original estimate, sorry!" after this is all over, particularly as it plainly has not "exploded" beyond their wildest expectations. Yep, I think they'll likely have to absorb some of that cost themselves if that turns out to be the case, to keep shipping cost increases reasonable and invested backers happy (and willing to back again). So, say we pay $230 or so by campaign's end including shipping; I still don't see how this isn't one of Mantic's best deal's - possibly the best deal - ever. (Aside from subjective preferences, naturally. If you hate the Veer-myn, this campaign won't rate as highly for you regardless.)

Going off the Kings of War KS which this is slightly ahead of in funding terms (only just) it took $108k in it's last 3 days - $62k on the last day and DZ:I is broadly similar so I can see this topping out in the $375k - $400k range might be enough the sqeeze one further HIPS sprue in in that last $50k - $75k.

I'd be happy enough to see the Steel Warriors in at least but I agree that the Rebs haven't come out of this well (so far). At least this going to cost me far less than anticipated - money left for something else at least March KS madness is nearly over

I suspect the best way to have got a bigger initial pull would have been to do a variety of races HIPS basic troops with interim metal/resin heroes to bring as wide as possible a backer set in

then switch to the terrain which most of them to want

and leave the 'exciting' stuff like jetbikes to the end,

what they've done may be good as a foundation to warpath, but probably not really great for deadzone

That's a *lot* of DOG drones,

I dunno about the veermyn yet but I'm definitely sold on at least a couple of box deals of forge fathers, maybe another pathfinders too.

Nobody does but we all want spacedwarf/spaceskaven hordes.

I didn't want to pay my morgage off anyway. The question is how many of what.

I'm having trouble resolving 30 pathfinders... seems a bit much really. But steel warriors are the standard line troopers of the FF so I could use a ton of those, 60 maybe a bit much as they're pretty elite and all.... but 40 seems right. Not sure if I want more space skaven or not... But the extra 45 I just pledged (beyond the 40 for the forge fathers) could easily get eaten up on bikes and maybe some duplicates like the N7 or drop marauder.

20 Pathfinders is probably enough for Warpath but adding 10 costs $15 whereas 20 is $20 so the extra $5 is a no brainer. There's enough DOG drones in there for their own unit!

I think an extra 40 Steel Warriors is enough for now (on top of 5 in the pledge) currently a basic platoon unit of 20 is 300 pts. that's before special weapons are added. You can fill nearly 800 points with 45.

Regarding warpath, are the Forge guard gonna be on 25mm bases like in Deadzone? For some reason I assumed they where gonna be on 40mm bases.

That's what I'm thinking, plus those steady units (or w/e you call them) will be unlocking characters and vehicles, and there are plenty of Drakkarim and uhhh...derp... oh storm rage vets, to fill in points. Plus warpath vehicles

I may pick up some more pathfinders just for the reasons you state, will come down to 20 more pathfinders against 4 more bikes.

I can't imagine forge guard would need 40mm bases... Just think of them as really compact terminators, capable of greater force concentration because of their smaller sizesuperior technology

Ecstatic about the deals (Hello, 20 pathfinders, 20 veermyn, and 40 steel warriors). I wasn't super-invested in the terrain or rules, so now I can drop down to the $1 level, get 3x the number of models I wanted without worrying about resin/metal along with a set of bikes on top, and still come out $15 less than Quarantine was.

Also, I very much like the aesthetics on those Steel Warriors. I think they may have accidentally invalidated Stormrage Vets (My previous favorite FF models), which have very notable design similarities to the new Steel Warriors and could result in confusion on the tabletop if kept as a separate unit, but I am 100% ok with removing the resin Stormrage and replacing it with a sprue of HIPS for half the cost that has the same cool appearance.

So the Steel Warriors will be a dual kit with Stormrage Vets (although it will mean another stretch goal). That should cover the extra 5 added to pledges as them lads are expensive at 185 pts. for 5 or 395 pts. for 10

Up next:

With the basic Steel Warrior frame funded, our next stretch goal will be to make it a dual kit to create hard plastic Stormrage Veterans, with the additional funding used to expand the tool and develop the kit with all manner of special weapons and extra parts.

Here are a few sample renders:

Agreed on that, the new Steel Warriors look great. Good of Mantic to make a joke regarding the lack of loin cloths too. My only reservation with buying a bulk lot of them is that I have found the more recent Mantic hard plastic sprues such as the Deadzone Zombies and Enforcers to be quite limited in terms of options. That said the 4 pack deals are exceptional value for money.

Glad to see the KS taking off a bit more for you backers too.

It's one to say I only have $20 now and have to wait. It's another to force everyone to do all the work up front then you reap the rewards. Knowing you'll take advantage but not helping even the slightest is a little bit of a "ha ha suckers" to the rest of the backers.

You don't have to commit big, but if everyone pulled that tactic, they'd have nothing to add in the manager.

The issue with the Forge Guard and Enforcers was that they were designed to be whole models then got changed to multi-part. You'll notice these ones where built to be seperated at the torso properly so they could be interchanged. Better design so should create an improved result.

Help with what? It's not a team effort, it's a product being offered by a company. If they wanted what was in the basic pledges, they would put the money in. If they only want the add-ons, why on earth would they pay extra for stuff they don't need?

Checking back in with my "nearly done" reminder, I do like the addon bundle announced for troops and Mantic's convinced me to put in the $1 for the pledge manager. Really liking the bikes, Steel Warriors and Asterians, and the Pathfinders are certainly in the "ok" realm as well. However, I just dislike veer-myn so much as a concept still that I don't think I can go for one of the actual pledge levels since they make up such a big chunk of them. Maybe I'll mellow on that dislike by the time the PM comes out.

And from Mantic's perspective, those $1 backers are nicer for them in the long run. If I pledged $1000 during the campaign, that's great that they have that assured money, but they're only getting $900 of the pledge due to KS and Amazon fees. If I pledge a dollar now, and up the spend to a thousand later, Mantic now has $999.90 for the exact same amount of product. Nearly every company would prefer a mix of both kinds of backer, but they're definitely not mad in the least about those "pay far more later" types. That's why Mantic gets more excited over backer number than they do over dollar amount. They know from their myriad projects now what people are likely to spend on the pledge manager on average, and that $400k on a campaign can easily turn into $500k in the PM with that last $100k coming in without huge bite marks on it.

It's great when a campaign blows up, but Mantic isn't a start-up company; they're using KS as a hype platform and to side-step some of the hurdles with traditional sales churn and credit by simply offering wholesale price (i.e. - not really hurting their bottom line that much) to people who buy things sight-unseen fairly far in advance. If they're going to play games with KS, they know their saavy backers are going to do so as well and have planned accordingly. It's all part of the dance.

If this was another company who legitimately had no options, like DreamForge's KS way back in the day, then yes pledging for the PM is problematic. That simply isn't the case for Mantic at this stage.

That's mantics problem, not mine. There is no responsibility here on the backers part. If I want to put in $1 to get access to the pledge manager, I will. If everyone does the same and we don't get a product, that's still mantics problem to fix and not mine. I'll just use my money to buy something else. If you really care about unlocking stretch goals or supporting the company right now, go right ahead, no one will stop you!

Sorry you feel that way Earth Dragon. Truth is Mantic has done this to themselves with having not one but TWO other kickstarters still open to adjust pledges in. Not to mention all the other kickstarters out there this month. On top of that they have soooooooo many fake stretch goals in there (heavy weapons for the jetbikes) that we figure are on the same sprue anyway. To toss in more money now, especially as I am on a tight budget as it is, would be stupid. I'm not going to run up a credit card bill just to support mantic, or possibly get you more options. If that's what you consider laughing in your face then too bad. If mantic didn't endorse this tactic then they shouldn't allow $1 pledge adjustments. Just have the $1 pledge as a support only no access to pledge manager in future and make the bare minimum to get in be $XXX. But that would be very GW of them and not sporting to those who just don't have the funds right now.

True they'll still have payment processor fees, but those are likely lower than the KS + payment processor fees. $950 is still greater than $900, and the cost of the product remains identical so this results in a better deal for Mantic in the long-run. The downside from their perspective is the uncertainty in how much money that $1 ends up being because it could remain $1, or it could balloon into thousands which is where their many campaigns of experience can inform them of what their total is likely looking to be. However, that uncertainty is why they, and any "KS company" like CMoN or ND seem to be morphing into, wants a mix; enough up-front money to plan reliably around but also enough PM backers to get a bit of cushion on that plan too.

If Mantic didn't want people running KS games with them, then they really shouldn't be running them on the backers with artificially low goals and "fake" stretch goals of parts that were likely already planned for the tool. What's good for the goose and all that.

Again, there are certainly situations where KS is a team effort and everyone should chip in what they can for the project because it legitimately will not get made at all if the campaign fails. When KS is part of your business model, that doesn't really apply anymore.

Seeing as how they had them as an add on even before the 'stretch goal' was met, and very likely have the tool laid out already, I don't think that is a problem.

You're looking at a minimum of $40k PM funds being added just by assuming the $1 backers up to the basic pledge (not all will, but with higher backers also increasing it's a good baseline), so the Stormrage Veteran dual kit goal is going to happen from here. Party time Forge Father fans

What's the diffrence between stormrage vets and the normal forge father troops? (Aside from being veterans and angry because of a storm)

Yeah, those models are from the beforetimes when there was even less fluff than now. I think they're just veteran steel warriors with heavier weapons.

There's also the Drakkarim with their dragons breath flamer things, and Thorgarim with their heat hammers.

I think what little fluff there is for each unit is on the mantic website under their entry in the shop.

Stormrage vets:

Stormrage Veterans are support troops armed with heavy guns crafted on the Forge Father homeworlds. Each Stormrage Veteran has many years of experience, and puts this and his weaponry to good use blowing big holes in the enemy army. Stormrage Veterans are few in number, but the devastation meted out by a single squad can cause whole armies to flee in terror.

Drakkarim

The Drakkarim are the highly specialised assault troops of the Forge Fathers. They are deployed at high speed by Drakkar transports right in the heart of the enemy lines, causing havoc with their fearsome Dragon Breath flamethrowers and ferociously charging into any survivors.

My kind of unit! If the Drakkar transports end up looking nice and these guys see hard plastic during the WP kickstarter... I shall want many.

Thorgarim

The Thorgarim are a brethren of Forge Fathers that specialise in the use of the heat hammer, devoting their entire life to mastering the use of this most awesome of close combat weapons. No enemy tank can hope to survive a close encounter with the Thorgarim, or indeed any creature that is foolish enough to engage them in melee.

Really, the forge fathers are the warpath/ronnieverse's space marines. The enforcers may have powered armor but they just don't fit the marine aesthetic at all in terms of how they operate... the forge fathers though...

If everyone pledged a buck, Mantic would change their approach and end up releasing the same damn product anyway since that was obviously their plan from the beginning. They just might not rely so heavily on manipulating their customers through kickstarter.

There would have been no deadzone and plastic scenery yet most likely.

While there is certainly an element of mantic having a produ t ready what would have been released would be very different.

There's always some opinionated person or another trying to guilt others into pledging as much as possible as early as possible in these threads. My stock answer is that if they want to pay for my pledge, I'll gladly accept their money for my KS order, otherwise they can bugger right off on presuming they have any right on how to tell me how I should spend my money.

So anyway, I'll go on on this one for $1. I might add more later, but given that I've got other stuff to do with my cash right now, and DZ is not exactly a priority (spent a fortune last KS, haven't played it at all to date) so the entitled ones can simply reap the rewards of additional stretch goals being broken during the pledge manager, assuming Mantic continues doing that - as they have in the past.

Well, if there's going to be any sort of end rush, it doesn't look like we'll see it today. Predictable, satisfactory, but dull going so far.

I don't really see Mantic doing anything tremendously interesting unless there's a major end explosion. It'll take serious momentum to get past the FF, their expansion, and the handful of throwaway metal one-off figures that would probably follow them (I'm guessing the Rebs would finally get their exclusive figure, followed by a Merc or two.)

I'm not sure why they're so coy about funding another hard plastic sprue; provided we clear the FF before the campaign ends, or even come reasonably close, I'd think PM funds would be enough to cover at least one more. Unless they don't really want to do another one yet for some reason. Is the true cost of funding a new hard plastic sprue closer to $100,000 (masked in this campaign by other inflated stretch goals)? Or maybe they just haven't figured out what direction to take the other faction sprues, and they want more time to mull it over for the Warpath campaign. No cg renders have leaked except for the FF, after all.

GrimDork wrote:Yeah, those models are from the beforetimes when there was even less fluff than now.

Ta both

@grimdork yea enforcers feel more like Halo Spartans to me rather than Marines.

Really like the dwarf plastics and only enough I really like the ratmen too.

Anyone know if mantic have said if;
These HIPS minis will be multi pose not just multi part? That was a big let down for me with the Forge Guard.
If the Rats are comparable with Rat bits from another plastic miniatures range?

The Forge Guard were designed posed and unfortunately never were able to get the plastic sprues to translate. You'll notice on the renders that there is a seperation on the torsos, making the bodies and legs interchangeable this time.

So yes. The rats and FF will have more posing possibilities this time.

To be fair it is a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK, half the country is probably hung over, filled to the brim with chocolate and roast dinner and possibly regretting a lot of spending on their credit cards. I assume that the US and many other parts of the World are not that different.

Earth Dragon: You seem sure that the Forge Fathers will be poseable, that does seem likely with the split waists. However previous Mantic plastics do usually have a paucity of bits. If it is a 5 man sprue there are usually 5 sets of legs and maybe 6/7 torso's if you are lucky. That does not lend itself to too much variety if you buy 40 of them. But again that does not put me off what is, for me, a design winner from Mantic.

Good choice on their part, thanks for sharing. May look it up though I've played a bit.. rarely hurts enthusiasm to see a batrep.

So *maybe* we'll see something neat sneak in tomorrow if we nail whatever stretch they assign to the stormrage sprue upgrade and go a little beyond... but we pretty much know what we're getting.

I'm in for about 100 more than I guessed... Gonna do some thinking as to how many steel warriors I really want. Talked myself down to 10 pathfinders as I don't want my scouts to outnumber my staple troopers, plus that army is getting magnets all over the place...

The spesh dorfs are not , though, so I can justify a few more for alternate weapon loadouts... though we don't know what the sprues come with. May consider backing down to 215 and PMing the extras I want after getting (hopefully) some more info so as to make a more informed decision.

Been a fun little project though, pretty weird pacing, but I think they've gotten enough done. If the newest hard plastics are in the wild by the time they run the Warpath KS, that should hopefully engender some confidence.

Those Kovossian Mutants are everything wrong with Mantic's sculpting style. Long torsos, funky legs, pecs taller than their mohawked heads, and arms the length of whatever who cares? It's hard to believe they were sculpted this century. I guess "plague" is Mantican for "80's Chaos homage".

At this point, they're committed. I'd be very surprised if Mantic didn't declare them 'funded' via the pledge manager if they don't get the money from the campaign. Now, a more pressing question for me ism "will they end up with the heavy weapons that have already been designed and planned for on the sprue if there's no stretch goal?"

Steel Warriors are funded then

When we break this stretch goal, we will be able to make the Steel Warriors into a dual kit that also makes five Stormrage Veterans, led by a Huscarl.

We will pack the frame full of heavy weapons including at least two hailstorm autocannons, two heat cannons and one missile launcher, allowing you to make a variety of heavy weapon troopers for your Deadzone Strike team.

Every Steel Warrior kit will be upgraded to make these models, opening up many new options for the Forge Fathers!

With this stretch goal broken, we will include a bonus sprue of 5 Forge Father Steel Warrior/Stormrage Veterans FREE in pledges of Lock Down!

next

A Rebs Specialist is up next - which would you want to see, a Rin Nomad, Sphyr or a Zee Saboteur? Let us know in the comments!

I think stormrage vets should be easily unlocked, the real question is how much they'll want for the rebs specialist. 5k and they'll need another goal. 10k and they may be asking a bit much. If they put up another HP sprue they'd probably get even more funding but I don't see them running that way.

I may do the same thing. The 'All In' pledge, though a good deal has too much stuff I don't want. Quarantine (where I have an EB pledge) also has stuff I don't want but does not include some of what I do. I can pay about the same in the pledge manager and only get stuff I want, if I decide I do really want it closer to shipping time.

Yeah, my original thought was to go [MOD EDIT - Please find a different way to express that - thanks! - Alpharius] for jetbikes and make a new bike army, but I love the look of the FF. That's really the strong pull for me right now; Forge Fathers look really good and much more in my line of taste than the Brokkrs. Other than that, like I said it's mainly the bikes that pique my interest and even then that wouldn't be for DeadZone so much.

However, since I have not put brush to model one from the first one (though I did assemble most of it) I'm leery about jumping in with both feet, especially with KD:M looming over my (decades long) painting queue between now and then like a 800lb pair of........gorillas.

Still, the prospect of a white/black scheme for the aforementioned "aren't they a little short to be stormtroopers?" gag is so very tempting. If Mantic doesn't have a couple painted up for the 4th of May as an update I will be sorely disappointed.

Thats good to know. I had also planned on using them as a base for more "human" allies for my SM army in 40k. I'm just glad to have good looking infantry for the main army. Assuming there is some customability and they look like what we're seeing in the photo. I was very impressed with the zombie plastics.

Enforcers and Forge Fathers are a shoe-in with the range of models available in plastic. I think they'll be hoping it works like the first DZ and start with 4 but expand to 6, but I actually don't think any of them will be Marauders. Plague, Asterian, Corporation and Veer-myn would be my bet - this is my own speculation though.

It occurred to me earlier with enough kits and left over mjolnir missile launchers (1 per 5 minis) you can also make make Godhammer Vets from this kit as well. It would be nice if they could fit at least 1 Dragons Breath on a sprue so that Drakkarim could be made.

I've been trying to figure out what color paints they use to get that armor for the Forge Fathers. I like it and want to try it on my Forge Guard.

It looks a lot like Baneblade Brown, Karak Stone looks a bit too light but it can be hard to tell with different monitors showing slightly different colours.

EDIT: tested some on a spare mini and I'm going with Baneblade Brown.

I think I'm liking the Squats better than pretty much every other minis they have. Enforcers are mayhaps a close second.

@DaveC:

The way it works in WP3 currently, the Mjolnir ML has moved into the Stormrage Veteran Team, and the Hailstorm AC has moved into the Steel Warrior Support Team - both of which are optional components under the Steel Warrior squad.

Unlike the way GW units work for things like Devastators, currently units possess the mix of heavy weapons and choose which type they fire that turn, so you just deploy a mix of models and don't worry about bitz searching for 4 of the type of weapon you want.

It would be cool if they could add the flamer, though the way it's presented suggests they intend those to be a whole squad armed with that weapon, so I don't know if they want to squeeze it on - but I will have a word.

Agreed, quite happy with the basic infantry. I thought I probably would be after the Forge Guard but happily surprised. Which is the only way they got me to put any money into this

Yeah Baragash that sounds better than running a unit of 4 Godhammers just mix them into Stormrage Vets or Steel Warriors more versatile that way.

Well Steel Warriors are getting Drakkarim upgrades after all

This stretch goal adds the Drakkarim options to the Forge Father Steel Warrior sprue, allowing you to field up to four Forge Fathers with Dragon's Breath Flamethrowers – the perfect weapon for clearing the Veer-myn from their tunnels in Exham IV!

When we hit this stretch goal, we will upgrade the sprue to include all of these extra bits, giving you more choice and variety in the types of units you can field, whilst allowing you to field Drakkarim in hard plastic for the very first time.

more add ons

Is this a record for latest in a Mantic Campaign Fake Stretch Goal?

It is welcome though - I think that Forge Fathers might end up challenging Enforcers for 'most popular faction' status too!

That's interesting. So by reading the update, it's not just A Dragon's Breath, it's 4. So you are actually funding an entire other sprue.

I love the options, but the only complaint I have now is will I be able to buy just the body parts? If I get 20+10 from LD, that's gonna be like 3x the weapons as bodies. I know this is nothing new and lots of companies load stuff into the sprues like that, but that is quite the excess.

OR they might be planning on packaging them like that any way if you buy 20. 4 bodies sprues, 2 ea of the weapons sprues. I wouldn't blame them, and it wouldn't offer any lack of options. It will just be interesting to see how this plays out in the end.

Indeed that's fast becoming my approach to Mantic KS; pledge them all and let the PM sort them out!

I made sure I put in my jerk pledge, because I'm not a team player. Also, doing a KS when a major Star Wars game comes out is a good way to ensure I have no money in the budget to give you; hopefully the PM doesn't fall in the same month as any Armada expansions.

I was planning to use my man stormrage veterans multibased, if the multibase version ever happens, but I'm cool with them surviving as a militia a bit like the existing Marauder grunts.

It does look like Thorgarim and Godhammer veterans have been left on the cutting room floor though, if the Forge Fathers are complete.

And finally, they've said no KS for a while and I believe them. Corporation and Z'Zor would be nailed on for the Warpath starter, but I'm going to make an educated guess and suggest that Deadzone rules for the Z'Zor and Corporation will be one of those low cost stretch goals between real stretch goals in the Warpath project, with digital rules thrown in or a $5 add on.

I buy initial Mantic fake stretch goals, those are pretty obvious.

But I don't buy "fake" tooling goals.
Adding more weapons onto a sprue will increase it's compexity and tooling costs, period. It's not like a 5x8 sprue has a flat fee.
I can easily imagine a base Forge Father sprue with 5 bodies and rifles, the end. Now we're up to needing two sprues, like the Enforcers, with a second sprue containing all the Vets and Drakkarim bits)
It's just straight up true that if you have a Y item that costs X to tool, then adding 50% to Y's quantity will also increase X's cost.

55k for a kit with as much stuff as should be coming with the FF doesn't seem outlandish to me. Not that it matters to me. As long as they don't release the same month as an Armada expansion or a favorite 40k army (like Admech this month) they'll be getting some cash from me.

Especially as that money is being shared amongst design, development, tooling, manufacture, shipping pallets of those sprues from China to the UK, unpacking labor dollars, repacking labor dollars, and now added dimensional weight to our KS packages

It's not that the stretch goal money is unreasonable. It's that Mantic break one stretch goal that should be bigger, such as FF steel warriors with all the options, in to several smaller stretch goals to give the appearance of slam-dunk momentum. For me, it has the opposite effect.

I think what's hurting them this time is the fact that LD is LOADED with metal and resin. Material cost of the pledge packages is eating up a bit more then usual. BUT you could argue that much of that is absorbed into the larger stretch goals for the metal models as well.

Still, materials from Lockdown packages are gonna take their toll.

The RUMOR is they are going 9 months to a year without touching KS again........we shall see.

These projects, in particular the KoW2 one, has got to be hurting market penetration, something Mantic has struggled with on a local level in the US.

Of our 5 largest markets, I've only heard of New Yorkers knowing places to go pick up Mantic products locally, which is a little sad.

Agreed. I understand that from Mantic's perspective, KS funding is a great vehicle because you have less concern about being caught-out with a bunch of stock that doesn't move. I also get that keeping factories busy keeps your costs down, and so having a lot of stuff going in parallel works out for lower costs all around. However, at this point we will have four significant expansions of product lines already underway, and some people's budget just doesn't stretch that far.

If the next Mantic KS we see is around Christmas time, that would be a good "while" for me. We might have every project in hand by then, but most of the heavy lifting should be done by then.

@Earth Dragon

You can pick up, or could, Dreadball and Deadzone stuff here locally in the Minneapolis area. They also had some of the Warpath/KoW units but I haven't seen those in forever. But even then it was in 1-2 of the shops.

The real problem smaller shops run into is that unless it's actual mantic games being played the sale of mantic models can cannibalize their 40k/Fantasy sales as people use them as counts-as. At least that's been the reasons a few local FLGS owners haven't picked up those lines. Boxed games like Dreadball and Deadzone are easier that way.

Yes, the KS factor definitely hurts Mantic a ton here. I have 4 reasonably convenient gaming stores I can get to in less than a half-hour. While one does indeed stock some Mantic, the others not so much; I believe outside of the one store (which does have 2 branches) the most Mantic product I've ever seen was a copy of DreadBall back when it was new.

We're not as big of a market as NY perhaps, but those are some pretty bad numbers still.

I wouldn't be so sure. DZ:I is set for jan '16 delivery, and I can't imagine they want to start a WP KS months before they'd have these new plastics out on the market, or at least in backers' hands, as examples of what they can deliver. Being able to show an entire hard plastic enforcer army (minus vehicles and characters, although even the latter is a matter of a handful of bits if they set their minds to it) complete with actual, product-in-hand user reviews would be really good marketing.
Early 2016, riding the wave of freshly released DZ HIPS, would seem to be the new goal.

...and if they'd wanted to keep pulling the football they wouldn't have gotten enforcers this close to a fully HIPS range, instead providing a single kit for each army.

Enforcers with their 3 HIPS and FF with their 2 will be the basis likely for their WP release. They'll have some plastic stuff for other armies available but those will be the two leading the charge for them.

I would imagine (again, personal opinion) that they will want to start beta-ing the rules ahead of the KS or as part of launching it, and it feels like Q4 is the earliest they would be ready for the public (the core rules are in a decent place, but some of the advanced parts and most of the army lists need more work).

@Hulksmash: Ronnie has consistently said you need 4 factions for a launch, i think you'll see Plague/Asterians and Veer-myn as part of the launch. Also you undersold each faction by a sprue (Peacekeepers, Enforcers, Pathfinders, Jetbikes; Forge Guard, Steel Warriors....Militia!!!)

No but I think renders have been done and they tried to do it before. I think Asterians would make the initial four a much more interesting proposition. However, The Plague have one HIPs sprue, and the army list kinda only lends itself obviously to one more (Stage 3s) so they might beat them to it due to having a "full" list - DZ:I means everything is now available in Restic or metal.

I do like the DreadBall ones. I still won't buy a figure from Mantic based on just a textual description or even just concept art at this point though.

Talking with another backer in the comments... the Steel Warrior sprue is really approaching a 4-unit kit... Considering you will get a heat hammer per sprue(s) of 5 Steel warriors, and that units for Warpath/40k tend to run somewhere between 5-20 (most usually 10, I think), you should end up with some extra heat hammers. Thorgarim are just melee specialists like the Drakkarim, with heat hammers and pistols... I think?

Alright well the Warpath 2.0 rules have them with just the heat hammer, suggesting it's 2-handed (like the current metal models)... but I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the one handed heat hammer with pistol combo that you'll doubtless have extras of to create a really strong placeholder unit. Really, they'd be smarter to change the profile to include the pistol when Warpath 3.0 comes around... then they can sell their kit, or at least army deals, as having Thorgarim included.

These new Forge Fathers look like the best models Mantic have ever produced. Some of the DKH stuff is also looking very nice as well.

Just glue the extra weapons to the dog drones.

Or your plastic Enforcers, or Enforcer Terminators, or the Coproration Not-IG models, or Orks, or....

they look decent as resin masters, but I'm not going to trust them until I see actual sprues

(and both sides of them too, I don't want weapons/arms with details only on one side limiting pose-ability)

I'm pretty hopeful, but this is mantic after all

I could see the extra forge father tech in the hands of Marauders and Rebs both. Rich marauders would likely pay well for the best gear available, and the Forge Fathers probably secretly support the Rebs to help keep the Corporations off balance as much as they can.

I've been out tonight...

I'm in for Lockdown, is there anything else kinda important (not the signs etc), modelwise that I should be adding, or is Lockdown covering pretty much everything?

Lock Down gets pretty much everything other than duplicates and bulk. If you want 20 pathfinders/veermyn/steel warriors you can get them for 20 bucks. But probably in the pledge manager too and those numbers *really* aren't needed for DZ.

Interesting finish

I'm in the camp of 45 mins is plenty of time to break another Stretch if they were to try to add one last things to Quarantine.

Might have gotten it

Normally they don't throw up those pledge levels until we've unlocked all that they need.

I think it got 3 connector sprues more it originally started with and that was it.

Yeah, we'd have been more likely to hit 385k with a goal of some kind, may still do it. Less people will be spam adding to push the total now, but some will still be getting off work, checking the deal one last time, going wow, and adding.

@Warboss, I don't think they have.

I still think both a Veer-myn player and Forge Father player could do with 20. More realistically you'd want 15 Forge Father troops to cover all the options, but when you are getting 5 more for free..........

A veer-myn player is pretty much set for life with the $20 deal, a $10 Shredder deal, and then snag a Progenitor. For $7 more you could even get some elite troops.

The Pathfinders do seem excessive. Simply because those probably aren't even gonne be your main for.

There's a few places in California that were carrying Mantic. Not sure if that's still the case though. At the very least, I've seen Dreadball in stores. So, at least there's that.

All Central AZ game stores except for one have cleared out their Mantic stuff.
The lone holdout is only stocking one copy each of Mantic's boardgames (Deadzone and Dreadball) because they're boardgames.
It's hard for FLGSs to compete with the crazy savings that KS (and from Mantic's periodic sales and deep discount online retailers) provide backers.
A lot of backers (at least around here) flood the local secondary market with the pile they realize they're never going to touch.

Sitting happily at $101. I'm glad of all of the bitz they're cramming onto the FF, although I do wish they had introduced a similar bundle deal for jetbikes that they did for the other HIPS sprues ($10 for 2, $15 for 4, or $20 for 8)

So per Mantics comments the Asterian Battle drones are done and they have 3D prints of them looks like it didn't get far enough to include them. They are troops, troop sized and will be HIPS. Something for another day then. Oh and there are no clones that got mix up with drones.

For just scenery? Probably. You're in the US, keep an eye on Miniature Market's deal of the day, they're crazy there and tend to hit things with the 50% off stick sometimes. Or at least 40%. Deal of the Day and stuff. I got a Forward Base or whatever the new one with the long tiles in it is called, for $50 bucks in their physical store. I think they were 60 bucks during their March Madness Sale too.

I thought good and hard about dropping to $1; the arguments for it, namely seeing more of what you're getting first, are such basic common sense that they're hard to argue. But at this point, with Lock down loaded with as much as it is and my experience with Mantic being as positive as it has been (I jumped on the Mantic train long after the first KOW campaign), there was little point in putting it off. It was a foregone conclusion that I'll be buying Lockdown eventually, and it's actually better for me if I break up the payments; much less of a red flag for the wife on the bank account, for one thing. So since I plan to add on acrylic doors and such later, it's good to get a chunk paid now. So yes, Earth Dragon, I was a good patriot to the end.

I expect there will be a few models I'll be disappointed in, but Mantic's success rate with me has been pretty high overall, so on balance it doesn't feel like much of a risk.

Or so I think. It'll be interesting to see if I'm proven right when all the final sculpts are revealed, or if I get my comeuppance for being a trusting fool.

There were a lot fewer backer this time around, along with a corresponding significantly lower pledge total.

The offerings were a lot more limited - necessary due to the "No Restic" promise, I guess?

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come, and that Mantic can 'figure out' how to get Warpath right.

I'd say this KS was a good example of Mantic doing it right, a small number of very high quality HIPS kits and a few metal and resin add-ons rather than a mass of restic.

It's what we all wanted to see in earlier campaigns of theirs, deadzone would have been much better off with hard plastics for the boxed game from the start, and a smaller number of better quality, more affordable minis.

I think mantic did a great job, I think smaller morecontrolled KS are a smarter idea.

from my understanding Mantic waned to do a series of small KS expansions for DZ to get most of the basic troops done. Then the warpath KS would be used to get vehicles an more exotic troops done.

I already have 20 HIPS Enforcers, 15 Peacekeepers and 18 Forge Guard, all still on sprue.

I can see myself picking up a horde of all the new HIPS models in the pledge manager and have a massive head start on 3 Warpath factions for about the cost of, say, one GW Knight Titan?

So, other than not getting to more plastic sprues, my main disappointment is that there doesn't seem to be any way to add-on cheap Enforcer trooper sprues. (Not Pathfinders or Peacekeepers, the basic Enforcers.)

The scenery looks good, and I may end up upgrading my pledge from Quarantine to Lockdown in the PM. Not sure, though. That mainly gets me heavily invested in the Veermyn, and I'm not so sure I want to paint and play them. But it's so much stuff for so cheap...

Personally I went with 20 pathfinders & 6 jet bikes just as addons for a future WP enforcer army. I bought a stack of terrain first KS, and have it all built, glued and painted now, don't want to open that Pandora's box again! Really like the marauders from the first KS, got a load of them and would have bought plenty of HIPS ones to add if they were an option, but it wasn't to be this time.

I disagree entirely. This is the best run Mantic KS in my opinion.

a) reasonable, easy pledge level with a good amount of stuff
b) hard plastic everywhere
c) reasonable timeframe
d) not too large - no overpromising and underdelivering, no quality control nightmares
e) stretch goals allow actual production of quality items (versus tiny stretch goals of KoW1 not allowing any wiggle room)

It is fairly obvious that they will be preparing to do a KoW2-style Warpath KS. Pledge for book+crap, and army-level pledges, consisting of armies of pre-existing plastics.

This one stalled a little too hard at the beginning/middle I think for me to say it's well ran.

Mantic needs to bake in a little more value at the start. $115 + s/h for 5 pathfinders, 10 rats and 1 battlezone was way too much, and turned people off.

I daresay they'll be looking to do a lot more than KoW2, since they'll need to fund out at a minimum 4 armies worth of hard plastic vehicles, plus new hard plastic troops for the Z'Zor and Corporation. $380k just won't be enough.

If they produce some Z'zor terrain or 'vehicles', they'll pass 400k for sure.

Unless they show some really terrible sculpts, which is a real probability.

If the plastics from Infestation are in the wild, and they're well received, then I don't think funding 6 plastic kits (4 vehicles + 2 kits for the 4th faction) will be hard to reach.

Same, I was just saying there's no chance they're aiming for the Warpath KS to be as small as the KoW 2nd one - especially since they won't have the same amount of existing product to build day 1 starter armies with

I think they added a lot of stuff a bit too late, which is why I ended up doing only $1. I'd been looking at things at the start and also when it was about 72 hours out from close to get an idea of what I wanted. Checked back in the final 4 hours and there's a whole slew of new items and the 3rd party laser cut stuff to the point it was a bit overwhelming, rather than trying to sort it out under a time constraint I said feth it and tossed in $1 so I could figure it out later. When I drop a $100+ I try and plan it out and all the last minute adds didn't help in making a planned purchase. I wonder how many other people are in the same boat?
