To quote from last year's thread:

Tomorrow is once again my birthday, so just like last year, I thought I would abuse my admin power to start a one-off fairly offtopic thread about dakka here for my own enjoyment tomorrow. Dakka represents a very large chunk of my free time, and so it is a nice birthday present for me to be able to read anything nice about how you enjoy dakka, what you like about dakka and what keeps you coming back. Nothing negative here please (including about other sites), and no feature requests, just a nice big virtual hippie bongo drum circle. I look forward to reading your input tomorrow, and thanks for making dakka what it is from me to all our members

*p.s. for those who do not know who I am, I am one half of the pair that owns dakka, and I am responsible for the technical side of things (all software, hardware, services).

2012 addition: for those who dont mind going to the effort - I love to see dakka actually in a native environment. If you could load dakka on your screen, then take a photo of your screen and desk/environment with dakka visible, then that would be great to see as it really hammers home the human contact that is missing when working on the code. Feel free to attach the photo to your post in this thread if you do so.

Much obliged all Here's to another year of solid uptime!

Check out our new, fully plastic tabletop wargame - Maelstrom's Edge, made by Dakka!

Mostly, on my phone.

I <3 dakka because...

Well, it's the community, specifically in P&M, that keeps me going. It's friendly, welcoming, yet close-knit and supportive. Great place, great chat, great people.
And...

Also, whee! First to post a pic! (sad little life I lead)...

Oklahoma City, Ok.

Glad you made it another year! Happy birthday!

Shouldn't this be in the OT? So we can treat it with the due "Love"!

Now, go, drink!

Dakka means: the ability to be Nerdly, with friendly nerdly folks, from the comfort of my home! Undies optional!
It's taught me more than I could ever say in 1 post. I couldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for this wonderful
community.

I think that for the most part Dakka is a well moderated site. That helps keep the aggravation inherent in internet conversations down.

Another year, eh? Tempus fugit indeed...

I like Dakka very much and to prove it, here is a picture of a small snotty first born along with a lazy cat called Gizmo. The eagle eyed amongst you will see Dakka in the background.

Many happy returns and all hail the burner of Lego!

Dakka is where ever my phone is. On a train, up a hill, on a film set, on the sofa and even in bed! Where ever there is 3G/wifi i'll be here. While I do little in the way of the actual hobby, Dakka shows the very best of it. With lots of pretty pictures and interesting topics. It's kinda helps me keep one foot in the door to eventually start up building and painting again. Also the forums layout pleases me very much so. Easy to navigate. Especially on an iPhone.

On behalf of all the lurkers, such as myself, happy birthday! (I lurk so hard this is actually my first post)

Dakka is my "go to" site every morning. I consider it an indispensable part of my electronic landscape.

Thank you for the time and effort it must take to keep a site like this up and running.

I love dakka because surrounding myself with as pasty a bunch of dateless nerds as you guys makes me feel much better about my own pathetic life.

Anyway, Happy Birthday... I'm off to magnetize the arms on something....

Happy Birthday Lego!

I wish to thank you for the creation, hosting and maintenance of Dakka. Without it I would be much the poorer with my miniatures, with my painting technique and with inspiration. However, the best part of Dakka is that, unlike other forums, I am yet to come across any 'tards with over-inflated egos. Dakka truly is a family, one that I am proud to be a part of.

Anyway... Here is where I waste away the hours.

Happy birthday, Lego! As I'm sure I've mentioned in last year's thread (since it hasn't changed...) I'm a slow and infrequent painter and modeler. Primarily, Dakka keeps me involved in the hobby when I'm not involved in the hobby. My general knowledge of all things P&M, the bulk of which I've never (or will ever, in many cases) even tried is due almost solely to lazy hours spent perusing the P&M forum when I lacked the energy to actually get some work done. When that time comes, though, I'm better equipped for it. For as few questions as I've personally asked, here, Dakka has made me a much better hobbyist, in terms of both knowledge and involvement.

I've got to say, also, that the site works surprisingly well. Well, less surprisingly so, now that I've been here for a while, but still... The number of issues people seem to encounter is low (and those are usually due to rookie ignorance of answers which are already presented in general FAQs and stickies), operation and navigation is smooth and simple, and there are tons of features not to be found in any other board I've ever seen, on any topic.

I've also been here long enough to see the Dakka community grow substantially (if you count our lengthy courtship (i.e. lurking time), I've been around for over four years, now). A few big names (well, at least recognizable, because who, besides possibly you, would notice when a lurker stops lurking?) have disappeared, but retention is high and new faces are always cropping up - a testament to the quality of both the site and the community found here.

Mods are visible, but less overt policing seems to be necessary to keep things generally friendly and constructive here than elsewhere - again, a testament to the quality of the community. It's pretty rare for a "simmer down, folks" to be necessary, let alone a ban. Threads get locked for good reason and you have to go to a pretty *cough* lively section to see more than a maximum of one per 2-3 pages of threads.

So, I came for the knowledge, didn't get chased away by the site design, stayed for the community, didn't get sick of the moderation, and have developed an ever deepening appreciation of all of those initial factors. I'm still reading, still occasionally responding, and don't see myself stopping any time soon. Ever, actually, so don't you go letting the site break on us, you hear?

Dakka is great for so many reasons, the way the site is managed (mods and codemonkeys alike) is brilliant, the community is very supportive, and although I wouldn't ever really go to a non GW game, even I can appreciate how good the support here for other games is. The main thing that keeps me coming back though is the fact that there is almost always something interesting to talk about... and the rumours threads are my only source of information on GW before the glorified catalogue (WD) is dropped through my door

Once more on behalf of the whole community, thanks for keeping the site great Lego, here's to another year and many more after that!

Happy Birthday Lego!

I would gladly post up some pics but I am stuck here in bed recovering from knee surgery. (but enough about me)

Dakka is my refuge I eagerly look forward to getting on the forums everyday. The gallery and P+M is where I draw inspiration when I don't feel like painting.
I have learned more about painting and rules than I would ever have imagined. Dakka has broadened my gaming world getting me into WM/H.

Happy Birthday lego, it was nice to meet the man behind the code this year. Thanks for keeping Dakka up and running, without you we might have to go outside and interact with real people.

My favorite Lego story will always be when you were chatting up the drunk lady while trying to explain to her that a worldwide collection of people from the internet got together to play with tiny plastic soldiers.
