Very nice! Weathering looks just great!

I thought you were making fast progress before - now I think you just wait till you are closer to finished to put pics up! Looking good though! I take it you got to use some of those FW Modelling Masterclass tips we got? How did it go in practice? (The results look good)

If you think the dread has been slow, just think how long I've been working on Gits' marine. He's only 50% done at the moment (I'll try to get something clear for him tonight)

I used a range of the FW tips and tricks to get him done this far.

He's got a gloss varnish on, which certainly made adding the transfers easier. It's just a shame that the old Scorpion ones are badly done as the white background isn't properly aligned with the black circle, so some touch-ups are needed as well as lots of trimming. I can only hope that the new sheet coming out is better.

The chipping was done in two layers, first up was a pale grey to give the highlights, then a black one for dents and scratches. Looking back at it, I think I should have gone for a very dark grey as a couple of the scratches are a little too obvious. There are also some pale yellow and dark-ish brown chips on the DCCW. I didn't go too overboard with the chipping as I just wanted to give him a slightly battered look rather than all out neglect. I wasn't planning on doing any wear, but I needed to obscure flawed parts of the chapter symbol transfer. Besides which, it fits nicely with the story WM is having crafted for his force

As for the mud, I mixed the powders with some water so I could paint it on. when it was dry, a dry brush was used to scrub off the thicker parts and turn it into more of a dusty look. I just remembered that tonight I need to gently flow some white spirit/fixative over it before I try and varnish the model.

All in all it didn't take that long to dent him up and I'm quite pleased with the end result

After many weeks of painting I've finally put the last coat of varnish onto WhaleMusic360's Venerable Dreadnought. This is both a case for celebration as it's probably the best painting I've done to date… and a moment of quiet sadness because I now have to package him up to send to America.

So, in celebration I finally dug out the lightbox to try and take some better photos.

I still need to find some daylight bulbs the right size for my lamps as there's a slight colour change that no amount of white balance or fiddling seems to get rid of entirely. I'll give it one more go with the gradient/starburst background that some photographers use and see if that makes any difference; but for now, here are some nice pictures of the final model.

Here you can see some of the damage to the claw

There are some other, slightly different views in my gallery. Some votes would be good

Putting the fixative onto the weathering powders has toned them down a lot, which is a bit of a shame in places as it's now so subtle you can't really see it; in others it's toned it down just enough to look like proper dust... so this will be an ongoing experiment.

While I had the lightbox out, I managed to get a couple of shots of Gits' WIP sergeant too. Finally!

Beautiful job on the dread endtrans... wow. Just remarkable!

I love the way the sergeant is turning out. His pose has got all the dynamism that I try to put into my own builds.

And I love the mustache!

Glad you're liking him. It's one of those worry points that I have when doing work for someone else. You'd think I'd be used to that by now, working for an agency an' all!

Looking great!

I always have that problem with my powders and it really annoys me. I heavily, heavily weather my vehicles so theyre swimming in dust build-up, then i have to varnish them to seal it, which dissolves most of the powders :(

Would love to know if you manage to find a way around it

Hey Vit, I've had luck mixing my powders with liquid acrylic medium... it makes them brush on more like kind of grainy paint, but they dry much more powder-like. than a paint would. It's what I used to get the blast effects on my Iron Clad.

Sorry for the slightly OT endtrans!

But, Gits:

Do they rub off? I find with the amount i apply, if i even move it dust starts to come off, therefore i have to varnish. You can see the problem here:

That's the beauty of the acrylic medium, it holds the pigments in place so there's no appreciable loss when you varnish.

You can also adjust the consistency of the mix, so if you want it to be a bit more paint like (as on my dread) you make a thinner mix... for a crustier look you make a dryer mix.

Sure easier than using hair spray, which is something else I've herd of.

Looks absolutely awesome ET. Will truly be a celebration when he makes it here. Really glad we decided to go for the FW dread, you did a fantastic job with him.

The Sgt looks very dynamic, and the mustache made me lol. He has a funny accent in my mind, not really even sure what kind though. Does he have a second gun on his power fist?

the other options for setting the powders are :

1) mix the powder with white spirit and paint it on like that
2) Brush on the powder dry (or watered) and then gently run white spirit or powder fixative onto the model so that it soaks into the powders

Spraying a varnish over the top of dry, unset powders will just dissolve and blow off most of it.

I use white spirits already, which is why im confused atm. I generally apply the powders dry then soak them in white spirit, but have also used the wash method on occasion.

Your doing a fantastic job. Love how dirtied up the dread is. Awsome. I play marines too and i have a thing against perfect glowing marine models. Many of mine sport injuries etc. Keep it up.

A quick update on Gits' GMS trade. He's slowly getting there... The main sticking points at the moment are the blending on the long streamers and his eyes. Ohhhh how I hate eyes. There's a reason my guard have optic implants or helmets

Looking awesome really loving the conversion for Gitsplitta hows the Chaplain doing by the way?

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. It is an oath we honour. Venerable Brother Laan showed up today. He suffered some battle damage on the great trip across the warp. Got him all fixed up and based though. Finished pics......eventually.

Battle damage? I thought I'd well and truly secured him in all that foam... he shouldn't have gone anywhere :(

What was the matter with him? Glad he arrived though!

Thanks. The Chaplain is slowly getting there. I've not had much chance to paint recently as I've been off on C# training courses... booHiss.

His back toe on the foot off the ground broke off, which I used for the pose, and he got a largish paint chip on the CCW arm, which I am planning on covering with some metallic battle damage. Nothing to bad.

A paint chip? Dagnabbit, there was loads of varnish on that :(
Sorry!
I can see the back toe as I had cut that off to angle down a bit, so it was a weak point. Next time I do something like that I'll pin as well I think.

Glad he actually arrived though. I was worried that the box would go walkabout
