He's paid for the ven dread to be sent to me, to paint up for him... which makes it even more nervewracking!

You'll be fine. Let the figure transport you to your painting "happy place" and go with it... It's also a good chance to experiment with techniques that you can't do on your own minis (because then you'd have to re-paint everything you own to match).

Make sure you post your progress, that should be a fun project!

Quick update for WM, just so he doesn't think I've legged it with his shiny dread
Still very much a WIP. Sadly the banner pole snapped while cleaning it up, so it's now carefully magnetised so that it can come off for transportation and postage to the US.

In case you're wondering what the red leg is for... the (as yet) unnamed Battle Brother inside the Ven Dread was seriously wounded during the Angstrom incident (doing something highly heroic of course! not playing catch with a melta bomb or anything silly like that. No. Definitely not.) and interring him was the only way to allow him to carry on fighting.

Oh, I like that end trans, the "gold" and grey work really well together...

Thanks

The grey will be darker when he's finished. I've found the best way to do Red Scorpions is to paint with a mid tone grey, highlight this up a few levels and then wash with a black wash. This covers up the blending errors as well as dulling down everything.

Your guy is in the works along with Loth and my Chaplain, but the photos of all three were rubbish, so they will get redone sometime soon.

Thanks! I really like the combination of dark grey and bright bright orange/yellow.

Speaking of which.. time for some updates on the various things I'm working on.

First up is the Dread. Whalemusic360 asked if I could swap the missile launcher for a DCCW. This arrived yesterday and is now all modelled up nicely as can be seen below. On the down side... the head has gone walkabout, which is REALLY annoying/embarrassing. I think it may have accidentally been cleaned up amongst some broken glass a few days ago. I'm trying to find a new Dreadnought head, but in the mean time I'm playing around with a death mask instead to see what it looks like. I'd appreciate any comments/thoughts on the replacement and any other possible options.

On the plus side, he now has a name. Venerable Brother Laan, veteran of the Badab War; interred in the dreadnought after seeing action during the Angstron section of the campaign.

Next up there's a bit of work on Gits' sergeant for the Great Marine Swap. The armour's getting there, though there's still a fair way to go on the rest of him.

Then there's my Chaplain...

And finally there's Loth.

Thanks guys. So. Does the Death mask look ok on the Dread, or should I try and work out something else? A normal marine head just looks lost in the cavity...

maybe the death mask without the halo around it

Glory to the Twelfth! Glory to Angron!

‎"Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls. The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

The halo is a bit much... Just did not want to be the first to say it.

It's over because we've decided it's over. Now get the hell out of our galaxy! Both of you.

Venerable Brother Laan is nearing completion... I'm really really pleased with him so far, especially his claw. I think the halo works nicely now it's lined up with the dreadnought's hood; it just looks like it's part of the bodywork.

It's mostly small details left like the scrolls and the banner pole ends... oh and the claws. I can't decide if the claws should be metal, or some sort of lightning claw, glowy effect.

The other thing I'm trying to decide upon is wether the eyes of the mask should stay black gaping holes (which I think looks quite creepy) or try Yggdrasil's OSL tutorial and have glowing eyes. Thoughts?

Thanks guys. I'm really pleased with how he's turning out. It's going to be a wrench sending him away on maneuvers when he's done.

For the greys I'm starting off with a base coat of Vallejo Dark Grey, slowly adding in a bit of Vallejo London Grey for each highlight. After about 4 thin layers of highlights the entire thing gets a wash of black to blend it all together and make it all much darker. Lastly, the shaded areas get another layer of black wash.

Sadly, no. You get the bodies, heads and Hass' bionic arm and power sword. On the other hand, with the Loth kit you get a full plastic Space Marine command squad as well as all the resin bits.

This dread is very slow going... I blame life for getting in the way of the important things!

These are still WIP shots after the weathering. There's still another coat of varnish needed to seal the powders in place before I'm done; then I can try and take some proper photos of him before I wave goodbye.
