Gross. The only halfway decent model is the boar (and I can't even stand the rider).

Their heads look like the old Gorkamorka plastics.

So is Beasts of War finally resigned themselves to the fact that they're now a glorified media arm of Mantic.

I don't wanna resort to "haters gotta hate" but...

BoW had an "Orc Week" that focused mainly on (shockingly) GW's newly released Orc Army book, with relatively scanty references to Mantic's (then still unreleased) Orcs, followed by the superlative Infinity week followed by Grey Knight Week...

Put another way, to apply this "logic" to Dakka, Dakka has clearly become a "glorified media arm of", say, Battle Foam*.

*Note, in the interest of being clear-on-the-internet(TM), I am not actually suggesting that Dakka is a media arm of Battle Foam, merely that D_M's thought process seems suspect.

They look great. They're orks, WTH does everyone want them to look like ? GW and WOW define what Orks look like for like 90% of the population, who don't have any other image of an Ork to reference.

That said, the first thing to came to mind when I saw them was the Gorkamorka Yufs. They have a more human like posture than the GW adult orks, very WOW like without the slowed purple armor.

We want them to look inhuman, not subhuman.

I respect your opinion sir, but what does that mean that Orcs are supposed to be? Do Orcs look like Orcs? Was the first Orc ever thought of meant to look like an Orc? I don't know, maybe it's like saying that a Sphinx looks like a cat. I think that GW's Tau look subhuman. So do Beastmen and Ogres to an extent. If it's humanoid it's going to look subhuman. Inhuman is alien - think Tyranids.

Has anyone got a scale shot of these guys alongside regular WFB orcs? I actually like the WoW conception of orcs, which these seem to resemble more, and might take this guys as a choice considering they are so reasonably priced.

It means that Orcs should look like you can take them seriously. A row of small, even teeth protruding from the upper or lower jaw makes the plastic Orcs look like they've got gak-eating grins. A horned top hat makes the plastic champion look like a clown. A prominant upper jaw and weak lower jaw makes them look dopey. The boar-rider's protruding upper jaw and mouth-breathing expression makes him look like a racist caricature.

The metal standard bearer shows one way to avoid this: he looks more like a noble savage in the WoW tradition than the doofuses he leads. Or you can go the opposite direction and look to creatures like the viperfish, making the Orc's jaw look like it is built to kill things, whether by crushing bones, tearing flesh or just swallowing things whole.

They look a lot better on larger bases. The small bases made them look kind cramped which exaggerated the skinny waist.

Still better than GW basic Orcs, but I don't see a lot of Orc players jumping to use normal Orc Boyz when Savage Orcs are so good!

Aye, very cool. Definately worth it.

@AlexHolker: Studio McVee has done a fantastic job with the Orc command units. Mantic's style is a tad on the comical, which is a very good thing, IMO. The two clash, but I think that Mantic's plastic Orcs are more true to their own style rather that the initial concept art. I believe that Mantic is going in the direction that GW should have gone with their miniatures line, or at least they're taking the tree branch that GW ignored.

*edited for the "plastic Orcs" part.

i might have to try and snag one of those sample sprues, and then see how they look with a head swap

I think they'd look great with a head swap... or perhaps some of these "six new heads" on the great axe sprue will fix the problem (as I think these are excellent, except for the head)...

same here, i like the models, except for the heads, most of which kinda look like they came from one of those old disney cartoons they aren't allowed to show on tv anymore

There will be 12 different heads in total for you to mix and match, with plenty of spares... so it should be very doable to not use the ones you don't like.

I personally prefer the helmeted orc heads, they look a lot more brutal.

Good to hear! Is that 12 different heads in the standard orc sprue, or (I'm assuming) throughout the various different sprues? I.e., what would you need to buy to get the different heads?

(I'm not sure if you know all that, but figured it doesn't hurt to ask )

Between three different regiments, there are supposed to be a total of 12 heads. Since the first two regiments only have six between them, the third one is getting more to make up for their mistake.

Think I can just buy bulk of the mantic orcs and then GW orc heads from a bits supplier and it's a win/win.

New paintjob is up, the models look so much better with a proper paintjob on them.. I especially like all the detail on the armor.

Also, first look at the greatax sprue. Looks really solid, I like the embossed chestplates, they're nice and 80's in style.

I'm much more convinced that these are going to be an actually good buy after seeing these pics... if only they'd done this to start with and not messed around with the goofy goggle-eyed paintjob! The reception would have been a lot better I think.

Oh, and there will be a new metal head sprue too.

Still not 100% convinced to buy but the new paintjob does make them more menacing. Kinda a shame the great ax sprue is ghoul sized, might get very repetitive if you dont get normal orc sprues

another angle

I think that's why the Army Deals are such great deals - because you get all the frames and can mix and match between them. also, looks like they're including an additional set of metal Morax in the new army deal, which would increase variety no end and for £150 for 120 figures (20 of which are cavalry figures and those gorgeous command units) you can't really go wrong! Placing my order for this today - can't wait!

Dam, that does sound like a much better deal now that I see them with paint.

Red eyes on the orcs? (At least mostly it seems) YES. Makes them look soooo much better!

The unit looks quite scary all together like that

As a confirmed Mantic fanatic, I am most definitely looking forward to this release. I have all the Mantic army deals so far and can vouch for their excellence and value for money (the Dwarf deal is a great case in point - £150 buys you a 3000 point army or thereabouts). For me, the aesthetic is all the better for not being GW - I'm glad Mantic have had the balls to follow their own path rather than mimic GW's sculpts.

Quite cool looking Boyz Found their undead plastics pretty good with plenty of extras.

Although I am hoping eventually for some non human skeletons and zombie units
