My biggest beef with TM is that their guns are soooo expensive, yet they have plastic bodies! Heck, for the same price you can buy a KWA with a full metal body/rail system, and shoots almost 100 FPS higher. TM just isn't the airsoft powerhouse is used to be.
KWAs are where it's at, as long as you can't afford a PTW, it seems like
Watched a boatload of videos of Systema PTWs. Guy was shooting 400 FPS with .43 (yes, .43 gram BBs) and estimated that it would shoot >600 Fps with twenties. Holy cow.
Also, our JG BAR-10 should be here soon. It has a really cool scope. Hoping we get some good use out of it.

The great thing about PTW's is you can change the FPS by changing the 'cylinder' inside. They are colour coded for diffy FPS. So if you chrono your guns before each game and your firing a little hot it really helps to be able to just push out one pin and change it.
The one gun I really had my eye on was the VFC Draguniv SVD sniper rifle. I could of sworn it was VFC that made it but I can't seem to find any info on it. oh well... 3 of us picked up PTW's... then we got interested in cold war era soviet gear and guns. I wanted to get a RPK-74, chris wanted the draguniv, we both wanted the ak-47/74 that was real scale. Most Ak's are 'to big' but this one was the proper size it also came in a wooden crate, might of been a chinese knock off AK. We wanted to di a VDV or a spetnaz team but we kinda drifted away from airsoft
Please dont mention the Zeta Labs AS VAL...... DO WANT... but my wallet will come hunt you down, it is holding a sharpened credit card to my neck as i write this and it will come after you too!!!
I'm interested in starting airsoft, and want to hear any advice you guys could give me before I start. Any general tips or things I should/ need to know?

Best advice is to find a group that plays, ask if you can borrow a gun (usually this is not a problem, I personally had 11 guns at once during a time and never had a problem lending a gun, and you find people like me all throughout airsoft), then get out and play and see if you like it. Some airsoft scenes are better than others as well and you may find that the scene around you is undesirable. I'd say don't invest if all you want is to play airsoft. Collecting the guns are a different story though

I couldn't of said it better myself. Find a group and play a few games with them. Most clubs/groups have someone who rents/lends guns ( usually a small deposit is required) to new people. Try out all different kind of guns, just because you like a particular gun doesn't mean that it's any good. After playing a few games with group/club, if you don't like there attitude towards gamming find another club/group.
Keep on trying until you find a club/group that you enjoy playing airsoft with. This is huge IMO because airsoft isn't exactly cheep so you don't want to invest in BDU's, gear, gun etc just to find out that the people in the club are douche's.
I personally believe that there are quite a few different ways to 'airsoft'. You can go for the run and gun kind of games where you are made up into teams and it's a free for all. These games can be great fun but just wasn't my cup of tea. Then there are the mil-simers ( millitary simulations) where you act like real solders, use hand signals, radio's ,learn small unit tatics ( like how to set up a L ambush) etc etc.
I personally had a blast while I was doing it. It defiently keeps you in shape. It's great for 'thinking on the fly' and if you are lucky you can make some damn good friends.
One thing I highly suggest though, Make friends with the local 'gun doctor'. This is the guy who usually fixes the clubs guns, orders parts, etc etc. Don't ever piss him off, Our gundoc was a guy named jasper. One of the nicest peolpe you will ever meet. He showed me alot about airsoft and the guns.
As to just collecting the guns....why the hell not, there are some beauts out there.
Yeah, good replies. I have nothing to add, except don't buy a cheap gun as your first gun. You'll definitely regret it. Save up and buy something mid-range. This can be as little as 150$ or as high as 300$, really. Anything less than that, and you'll end up with a bad taste of the hobby in your mouth and be frustrated with the money you wasted
G&G Combat Machines are probably the best AEGs for someone on a budget. They have plastic bodies, but it's nothing to worry about, really. it's amazing quality stuff, and I haven't heard of them breaking too much. Even if it does, parts are common.

I was looking at vests and MOLLE plate carriers etc, but I feel like having two teams of fully geared, semi-matching guys would be awesome
I've got a cross-draw molle vest, I don't really like plate-carriers. I prefer usability over how "tactical" you look, there's really no reason to bring a dozen pouches and a backpack etc... It makes more sense to bring only what you can expect to use in-game (only as many mag-pouches as you need, MAYBE a dump-pouch, a camel-back, a holster if you need one and a team-radio) a lot of people take too much, trying to look cool and then spend all day complaining about how heavy their vest is.

In real life, the slide on top is metal. (We have one ) That's why I prefer the KJW model.

lol too true. I've worn all sorts of vests. Down the road and until the time I stopped playing airsoft, I used an old trusty vietnam style harness: http://vietnamuniform.com/fieldgear.html Works like a charm and carries what you need. It also allows you to feel bbs easier as a full blown vest is like a atomic bomb proof bunker in comparison to an airsoft bb.

I've just got a camo vest and some pants, and a few other odds and ends, like holsters and stuff. Some of my other friends wear leather jackets, which is the ultimate armor against welts.

I was planning on taking a picture next time I play
I have walmart hunting camo Its beige, with branches with brown leaves in places, as well as small pine brances etc
Only a dress shirt looking (I think twill?) shirt, but good pants. I also have some comfy winter gloves with matching camo (and both trigger fingers are thinner )
If and when I buy vests and pouches etc, Im the kind of person whod come to the game totally decked out simply because it looks cool

Son, be a man and use a WWII paratrooper army belt like me. More reliable than any other tactical vest, and battle proven. Get a y-strap to balance the weight.
I guarantee you that I'm not really as smart as the test says:

Yes, it does happen. We called them 'Gear Whores'...although it can be kinda fun to show off your new swag?
Ive tried many different rigs while playing and personally I love my South African Assault Vest. I have a cammel back on it, mag pouchs and a dump pouch for 'dead mags'.
I've tried on plate carriers and unless you have the 'real plates' (lvl 4 body armour is highly illigal in canada) I can't see the point. One of the best rigs I ever used was a chicom while using a AK-47 set up. Gotta love the chinese =o]
I love the mo mollie mo problems, thats freaking awsome.

One team gears up and boards a plane, the other gears up and drives to the combat zone (which has to be huge)
Plane takes off, and the members parachute into combat
Spread from their team mates and surrounded by hostiles they must regroup and attempt to take down their enemies or be destroyed
Anyone on dakka own a plane...?
I would kill do do a full tatical combat drop either HALO/HAHO, but alas I am not part of the 82 Airborne nor in good enough shape to not garontee hurting/killing myself or someone else.
Awsome idea, I wish private parachute companys could do those kind of tandem drops.... damn you now I will be thinking about this all bloody night

I have a bunch of friends that have tac vests, and they all love them. I never got one since I thought the Russian tac vests were kinda uncomfortable, and AK mags don't tend to fit in pouches made for 5.56 mags lol. I do plan on getting a basic vest like this http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=28_96&products_id=8800 so I can carry midcaps and a dump-bag easier.
I personally never understood using plate carriers...they're not the comfy, and makes it harder to move around in. Plus, it's harder to tell if you've been shot due to all the extra material.

I personally gear myself up, but most other players don't. They put magazines in their pockets and stuff. Really makes the game less fun. Full gear just makes the game amazing.
I want to buy a matrix plate carrier something-or-other that's about 75 dollars to go UNDER my LBV and other gear, but I have a feeling that would be too much. I'm also considering a leg holster, since my pistol belt is totally filled up. I wear an M-1 Steel Pot Helmet too. I sometimes wear an Alice Rucksack too, if I'm trying to go for a serious load bearing thing, and fill it up with books and jackets
Main chest piece, with a pistol belt on those loops you may or may not see. My pistol belt consists of: USMC Kabar Individual Soldier's medical pouch .45 ACP magazine pouch Butt pack Compass pouch with cammenga compass Canteen Pouch with canteen Anglehead Flashlight
I like to dress up.
I'm school blocked from every airsoft thing, but this is what I was considering. Being uncomfortable is a passion

Lightweight setups are the way forward IMO, i have pistol, 3 pistol mags, 3mids and a utility pouch on my belt and thats great for a normal days skirmish as im a sneaky git.
I can just refill mags at a break between games or at lunch.
I have a full ACU (UCP or whatever its called now) loadout with a zillion different pouches, plate carrier, leg rigs etc etc and to be honest, its just restricting and encourages me to carry more than i need. For mil-sim events its good though.
One of my friends (the one with the G16) sometimes plays in nothing but a business suit and a fidora
My revolver gets around 480 FPS. I use it as a backup for my rifle instead of a pistol For a pistol, I have a .45 auto. Lol I carry three guns. (Even four if I decide to take a springer as a realiable backup for really long battles)

I really want this right now. This thread is making me feel inadequate in the gear department, even though I'm much more inadequate in the guns department and probably have more gear than I know what to do with.
