It breaks my heart when I hear about some idiot who pulls an airsoft on a cop or some slowed thing. People like that give it a really bad reputation. Same with people who just go around shooting people's windows and crap like that.
As with a lot of legitimate hobbies, there will always be someone who makes it look bad.
I think as long as you're wearing eye protection, Airsoft is a harmless hobby that keeps people away from real guns, and gives them a chance to live out their fantasies without harming anyone, necessarily.
Also, do you have to be 18 to purchase propane? I'm thinking about just getting a nice KWA 1911 instead of another AEG. I can conceal a pistol much easier en route to the woods, where we play, plus, it'll teach me to conserve ammo a bit better. plus KWAs are just fantastic, apparently.

Is the weather cold or warm most of the time where you live/play? if its cold TM are a fair bet, you dont have the issues of the gas venting or horendous cool down when firing a metal GBB.

Here's an airsoft Kar98 with ejecting shells!

Here's a good question:
What do you use - Midcap or Hicap mags?
I used to use hicaps, but recently switched to mids

Always used to use Hicaps in my AEGs, then I got my M60... Super-Hicap.
I know of at least one field in California that requires you to use midcaps (no mag winding allowed) to embrace slightly more realistic ammo limits.

Airsoft use to be my life. I've probably owned 40 guns ranging from a wal-mart special to a PTW MAX.
As to which one hurts more: paintball or airsoft. This depends on the competance of the people you're playing with. In airsoft, I've seen bb's imbedded into lips, cheeks, I've seen chipped teeth, and I've seen plenty of blood, but this was usually due to dumb people taking point blank shots when you're not suppose to. Some people can't take the realism and with the adrenaline pumping actually react instictively when they turn a corner and see someone there. DON'T SHOOT SOMEONE IN THE FACE AT POINT BLANK!
I haven't played much paintball, but when I have I found it to be much more painful and I would have welts for months.
The problem with airsoft is it's too easy to cheat. Hard to pull that in paintball.
I prefered using mid to low caps. More 'realism' involved and you don't have to worry about bbs in your hicaps sounding like a baby rattle, which gives you away like Tom Cruise did his reputation. Most places here in California will require mid caps unless you have a heavy support weapon such as an M249 or M60.

Also, I'll spend less on BBs and still be able to do the cool 'mag change thing' I want these: http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=60_143&products_id=1664 Love the vietnam ones. They work great if you sit prone a lot, and get in the way less. Also, they're easier to carry.

I play the role of sort of a scout sniper, and this is my main gun. Hurts way too bad for use at close range though. (That's not a pic of mine, btw, my scope is slightly longer.)
And this is my gas Wingun 700 full metal Co2 revolver. I pretty much use it as a backup for my rifle, because it shoots just as hard, and would probably draw blood from close range. Thinking of putting a scope on it as well.
I also have a gas colt 45 that I use for really close quarters stuff, but I rarely use it because all of our battles are in the middle of the woods. Oh, and I have a really good spring FAMAS (scoped) that I use sometimes when it's too cold for gas, but usually it ends up getting passed off to a friend.

What kind of range and accuracy do you get with your rifle? I've been hankering for a no-nonsense, Spring, long ranged gun.
I keep coming back to this: http://www.hitguns.com/Well-L96-AWP-Airsoft-Sniper-Rifle-w-3-9x40-Scope-p/well-mb01-awp-scope-bipod.htm
But honestly, I can't think about a sniper yet. This one is apparently pretty good. Nice easy dissesembly and cleaning. Plus, comes with a scope and bipod, which is kind of rare for guns of this price range.

Yeah, I'm just not getting the kind of play style I want out of my AEG. I consider myself very good at camouflaging and sneaking around, and I like waiting for that perfect shot, rather than blasting away on semi. Plus, I could really practice some marksmanship (I suppose) with a sniper.
I'm thinking a sniper would just be a welcome change of pace.
That's one thing about airsoft. As soon as you buy one thing and play around with it for a couple days, you always want something else.

Yeah, I like to have the option between going lone-wolf stealthy or "Rambo" or working in a cohesive team.
I understand what draws people to enjoy sniping, it's not my cup of tea... I tend to "hunt" snipers just for the fun of it.

I liked mid to low-caps for two reasions. I had all my gear taped down so it didn't rattle around, and you sound like a morrican band going down a trail with High-caps.
If you are just going out plinking and shooting and having a good kill'em all kind of game high caps are just fine. If you are out in the middle on nowhere doing a mil-sim on a 3 day excursion low caps all the way baby!!
We also have/had they 'snipers are cool' look or ' I wanna be a sniper' kid show up. They find out real freaking fast that sniping isn't like it is in the videogames. We where also rather good in that if you had a sniper rifle you also had to have a side arm and you couldn't use the SR within a certain range. BCAC offered sniper courses and you couldn't use a SR if you didn't take the course because of the FPS on some of them. All this talk makes me want to get my PTW back =o[

Airsoft sniping isnt really sniping, I dont think anyway. Which is why you get people buying a super duper sniper rifle and then selling it a month later.
I find its more of a recon role, relaying intel back to your team mates to help make decisions on how to take an objective, then only occasionally taking out enemies when you see them. At the site I play at regularly we play a medic rule, and its amazing how you can stop a team in its tracks by picking one person off and using him as "medic bait"

Just like real life eh? It's a time honoured tradition to 'shoot' a fire team member and pick off the rescurer's one by one. It's gotta be hard as hell to stand behind cover while your buddies out in the street bleeding like a stuffed pig. My hats off to the guys who do this 'for real'.
I totally agree with you on the airsoft sniper. Thats why they made you do the courses. Gun safety and to show you it's not going to be like in the movies or videogames. On the BCAC and Airsoft Canada buy/sell threads there are always 'new' sniper rifles up for sale. The only time I could see needed a honest to god sniper team is if you are playing a hard-core mil-sim on a huge area "In canada they have a huge game every year in saskatoon', and borderwars kind of games. Most area's where you play it's almost pointless unless they are like a reecee unit. This all goes out the window if you get to play on a urban field. Then nothing beats a designated marksman/sniper team kind of unit. If you can get a 3,4 or 5 block square area to play in you are going to have a hell of a game!

Hard to snipe effectively indoors so you don't see it at my local. There's only a few places where you could even make use of any range greater than a stock AEG. Besides, it's way more fun to stick to cover and move up with the shotgun or P90. Speaking of which, with four 170-round mags, who needs highcaps?

I found the TM- T90 rather ackward at first but it just becomes so comfy in your hands after a while. FN shure has a winner there IMHO.

Get a nice bolt action sniper for er.. sniping (or marksmanship, which I think is a little different) and a gas pistol for CQB. Or a shot gun. I've been waiting for an excuse to get a shotgun sheath I haven't done any three day excursions yet. How would I go about this? I live near the Appalachian trail, and I was thinking about doing some backpacking anyway. I hadn't thought of taking an airsoft with me.

If you want a sniper rifle, then get a sniper rifle: http://www.airsoftextreme.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4037
Tad expensive, but that thing will give you more of the sniper role everyone thinks about when they think "sniper". I use to play airsoft all the time with the guy who makes those rifles (yes, he hand makes some of the parts including the barrel, and guarantees his work) and he could hit targets at 100 yards fairly accurately, and getting a few of those 400ft "miracle" hits is not out of the question. If you've ever played at Ford Ord then chances are you've seen him walking around with it. His name's Mike, he's got a bald head, long goatee thing, and quite a bit of tatoos that always get a double take, but he's a super nice guy.
I had an upgraded Maruzen L96 when I use to play and that thing also shot really well, but the accuracy wasn't nearly as consistent as the one above. Still though, I'd recommend it for the price.
However, if you want one gun that does everything all the other guns do, I'd say get a PTW MAX. Extremely reliable, very accurate, very real, and you can switch out like 4-5 different springs (M100 - M150 I think). The 3 round burst on the M16 sometimes makes me cry, especially when you here a *tap* *tap* *tap* on your target.

Do you play in teams? Can you play in teams as I have some friends who would probably form a team with me. How expensive can full bdu's be? There is no age limit, really. My nephew was 6 when he was playing with us. I've seen guys in their 60's playing as well. COL Danny McKnight from OP: Irene ('Black Hawk Down') even plays in some of the bigger airsoft operations hosted by OLCMSS ( http://www.oplionclaws.com/). I've never actually seen him shoot an airsoft gun, but he likes to talk a lot on the comms. Normally you will play in teams, yes, but you can do whatever you want with it--free for all, two teams, multiple teams, moles, roques, etc. Whatever sounds the most fun with the people you've got. BDU's are often times very cheap, or sometimes free. All types of BDU's are available, but some are easier to acquire than others. There are too many websites to list the "best" place to buy wargear. Try a google search and find your favorite Just ask the guys you know if you can tag along some time, I bet they'll be thrilled to have another target.
