Good luck with that, it'll be cool to see some finished stuff.

So... some actual painting in progress. I'll wait while you all get back off the floor...

The Meganob cloak and the Painboy shoulder pad have had their Dark Angelz Green applied several times over to get a smooth coat - who would have thought it would be so hard to cover Iyanden Darksun? They have been given a wash of 2:1:5:4 Dark Angels Green/Chaos Black/Gloss Varnish/Water () ready for a retouch of Dark Angels Green. No pics yet. (I said I'd wait!) I had previously noted the 1:1 Dark Angels Green/Chaos Black seemed too dark - and this looks promising.

I gave three boyz a highlight of 1:1:2 Dark Angels Green/Snot Green/Water - but the transition was more severe than my blending ability could cope with. Today I have had some actual success and applied a 2:1:2:2 DA Green/Snot Green/Gloss Varnish/Water highlight/blend followed by a 1:1:2:2 DA Green/Snot Green/Gloss Varnish/Water Highlight blend to the rest of the boyz. The first pic of just the Nob after the first highlight:

The second pic of after the second highlight on the other Nob:

This is possibly where my shoddy camera work isn't really helping. Oh well, it serves as proof of progress - and the text above reminds me of the combinations I was working with for later Taking smaller steps is helping with the blending, even if it isn't obvious, but of course, it means more layers - doh! There isn't really the contrast yet. I can still mix up through Goblin Green (I think) and one of the yellows (Sunburst or Golden) - hopefully that will be fewer steps... (at least it will be smaller amounts to paint with each!)

Will need a wash in there to bring it altogether. So far thinking a Thraka Green and/or Devlan Mud for the clothing and Badab Black and/or Devlan Mud for the armour - which I'm hoping will differentiate them more than just the sharpness of the highlights.

Of course, the fun doesn't really start until I get past the green...

Sanity... still... in... check...

Catchya!

Skin's looking good after the first highlight, second's a bit bleached out, but I suspect it looks good too

And thanks, the shock of seeing some paint over here should allow me a chance to get some more chopping done before anyone starts up again for my lack of colour

Just checking!

Added pure Snot Green (or was that Goblin Green - it was supposed to be Snot Green.. - actually, not pure, 1:1:1 with Gloss Varnish and Water - and frustratingly the paint keep wanted to separate...) as sharp edge highlights. May just start mixing in a Yellow now. Anyway, a pic of one of the three boyz completed to this stage (also the two Nobz - completed to this stage - not pics)

Had my first game/trial run on Vassal against endtransmission. As a lark (and because I hadn't prepared beforehand/didn't want to take my "typical" 500pt force), I took my Dark Angels V1.0 force. (It's on the catchup page if you are *really* interested). Pretty terrible list. Poor endtransmission had some poor luck in some critical moments, so despite almost wiping me, I pulled off a sneaky victory. Ork of the match goes to the Shoota Boy who singlehandedly won the match while on taktikal retreat (He and a buddy, the last survivors of a 10 strong mob led by the Warboss, split off from the Warboss and shot a Veteran from the squad holding 2 objectives. They failed to hold up to a tank shock and retreated, using craters for cover. His buddy was shot down, but he retreated, capped a second Veteran, survived amongst the craters, retreated again and capped two more Veterans. The surviving Veterans failed morale and retreated, abandoning their two objectives!)

Looking good. For an edge highlight, have you considered adding a bit of bleached bone or rotting flesh? They make the highlight less stark than white, while still allowing a sharp higlight. And you should give that shoota boy 'termy honnurs' now

I'll be using a yellow for the same effect (I use those others on skin from memory)

Ooops Umm, I thought that was just another layer of 'arder skin wot da dok had grafted on

No? Didn't think that one would wash.

I will admit to being a bit confused as to why you had added flesh/red wash to the skin before starting the highlights

So, the armour's looking good on that boy That is a nice green you have going there, and I do like the blending up from the black. Are you planning on adding any other colours to the boots, or keeping them the same as the armour? Or to put it slightly differently, will the cloth and armour parts be getting a different wash at some point to differentiate between them?

Boots wil remain the same colour as the armour/clothing. The toe caps will be done as per the armour - so probably a Badab Black and/or Devlan Mud Wash, with harder highlights and chipping, the rest as per the cloth - so probably a Thraka Green and/or Devlan Mud Wash, with softer highlights and no chipping

I've realised now I was using Goblin Green not Snot Green before - doh! So, everyone else has been brought up with 1:1:1 Snot Green/Gloss Varnish/Water followed by 1:1:2:2 Snot Green/Goblin Green/Gloss Varnish/Water - including some earlier ones where I made the leap to 1:1 Dark Angels Green/Snot Green too early. Confused?

Anyway - latest boy as an example of highlighted up to 1:1 Snot Green/Goblin Green:

And overview progress - the boyz to the left of the Nobz (and the Nobz) headed to Goblin Green a bit early:

The ones to the right are as per the first pic - well - except for the Meganob and Painboy of course:

It's a lot of effort for boyz - but I have to keep reminding myself - this is pretty much still practise for when I get to the character models... Anyway, funnily enough, smaller graduations in colour blend smoother and easier than larger ones, but take longer to do - who'd have thunk it?

The combination of mixing Gloss Varnish into the paint mixtures and photo-ing under my day bulb with my iPhone is not doing my pictures any favours unfortunately. I was hoping to get more time over Christmas/New Year to meet endtransimssion's challenge - but it's not looking good so far. Still - I'll probably continue this painting until it's done - regardless of whether I make the "deadline" - it will b good to have substantially more complete.

Started a 1750pt Vassal game with endtransmission - though this one is being played offline. Outnumbered by Guard again! Just waiting on him now...

OK, there's obviously some sort of short-circuit in my system somewhere, every time I look at a pic I'm focusing on the skin I think my brain picks up the word 'green' and decides it must be the skin you're working on

And well done for going back and re-doing the ones you knew were different, painful, but worth it (even if no-one else would have noticed you'd know about it).

Hoping you're not too sick of green yet...

Ah, quite a few comments to catch up on before tonight's update!

@Gitsplitta: Slowly but surely. I'm sure we've had this back and forth at least a couple of times now Still need to send you your GMS Stormboy Nob... (I haven't forgotten!)

@spudkins: Unfortunately, it's not as many Orks as you might think.... but you do get pages and pages of step by step progress...

@CommissarKhaine: Yes, the effect is very subtle. it's more what I'm practising than what I'm after. I'm not redoing mistakes and overhandedness...

@The Good Green: Yeah, diorama is on hold while I actually finish some long overdue painting

@monkeytroll: Understandable I haven't gone back and redone anything yet - just brought everything up to the same level (some skipped a few steps...) We'll see if I can tell the difference at the end - probably not... Surprisingly perhaps, I am not yet sick of green (thankfully, the later highlights apply to less of the model)

@HAZZER: Thanks for checking in! I think your blog is on my subscribe list, but if it isn't, it will be soon. I don't comment much (quality over quantity - well - that's my excuse anyway!) but I do keep up with probably too many blogs... No desire to change the skin tone at the moment - enough issues just getting them finished! I'm sure it will happen sometime in the far distant future...

Now, with that out of the way, tonight's update!

Went through and added a further highlight of 1:1:2:2 Goblin Green/Golden Yellow/Gloss Varnish/Water - trying to favour the top/corners of the armour and cloth. Here's another boy in the rotation at this stage:

Then decided to do a 1:1 Thraka Green Wash/Gloss Varnish wash across all that green to try to tie the highlighting together. I think that was a bit weak, so at some point upped to 2:1 Thraka Green Wash/Gloss Varnish. Another boy in rotation at this stage:

And a partial group shot - coming together nicely as a group even if the individuals aren't "Golden Daemon Perfect"

Thanks guys...

End of 2011/Start of 2012 update...

Tried adding a Badab Black wash to the armour plates, followed by a 1:1 Badab Black/Gryphonne Sepia Wash (with equal parts Gloss Varnish). Then Devlan Mud-ed the cloth. Very subtle, perhaps too subtle. Hopefully chipping and damage on the armour/metal parts will do a better job of separating them (or I'll have to use different shades of green in future...)

Hmmm.. lots of plain boring armour plates... needs something...

Let's practise some freehand! Da Dark Angelz symbol - inspired by WhaleMusic360's Deff Dread he started for me ages ago... outline in Adeptus Battlegrey:

Fill in with Codex grey and re-add Adeptus Battle Grey to the bottom of the overlapping teef:

Finally highlight the top edges with Skull White:

Group shot:

Now just need something for the shoulder pads on that 'Ard Boy...

Happy New Year!

Thanks guys!

As noted yesterday, the 'Ard Boy Shoota needed some decals:

Which prompted me to add more white to the Dark Angelz glyph to try to bring it inline...

Not as sharp. Perhaps I need to look into printing my own decals (for the future)...

Sponged on some 1:1 Chaos Black/Dark Angels Green to the armour:

Added some Boltgun Metal:

Group Shot at this level:

Photos aren't really good enough to see the subtle differences, but the Boltgun Metal is starting to differentiate the cloth from the metal. Back plates with glyphs look a bit messy, but helmets, shoulder pads and plates are looking promising.

I don't think it's going to come together properly until then end though anyway...
