This is a thread for things in 40k that seem to stand out to individuals that others might not have noticed. By way of example:

Is it just me or do the Vostroyans look like the guards from the Wicked Witches castle in the old Wizard of Oz movie?

Some Tau units and iconography bear striking resemblances to those found in Bungie games;

For example:

Aun'Va = Prophet of Truth/Mercy/Regret

Also, the Tau symbol itself is very similar to the Marathon logo.

On the whole, I find the Tau race very similar to the Covenant from the Halo series....conglomeration of alien races led by a few who are enlightened to a higher purpose...

Don't let either GW or Blizz read this but...

Is it just me or are Blizzard's intellectual property and Games Workshop's intellectual property basically identical?

Could you hand me some glue for my zerg army? Oh, and I need to go and pick up a unit of marines. With spike-shooting guns. And big shoulder pads. To fight both hive-mind led insectoid aliens and some very ancient, super psychically gifted aliens. thanks.

Yeah, except in this case it's not GW borrowing from someone, it's the other way around.

The original warcraft game was actually meant to be a warhammer game, but GW backed out and blizzard went to make the game anyway. All the zerg, nids, protoss aren't original either. They just ripped off of alien and predator. Eldar are just elves in space.

And it's all ripped off of ancient folklore, Heinlein's visions of future armed forces, and drawings from H.R. Giger.

Like ryzouken implied, Starcraft, 40k, and the like all follow from Starship Troopers anyway; Heinlein coined the term "Space Marine," debatably came up with the idea of power armor, and made the first real "Marines vs. Bugs" setting to boot.

I always thought it was pretty jacked up that it takes a 1000 souls a day to keep the Empire on life support. That seems kind of Chaos-y to me.

At least the Tau aren't jerks about it like the Covenant...xenocide is not in their playbook.

Certain parts of the fluff can be linked with historical battles (e.g. Double Eagle by Dan Abnett is the Battle of Britain), and certain names can be linked with historical figures.

a fire warrior with an energy sword?
i would suggest grav hammer, but it would weigh too much for him

halo should really get into models

covenant, brute, human / spartan armies

would make a killing from it

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

Forget the energy sword, I'll take a Scarab for a Heavy Support Choice

Rule 34? WHERE? I needs it!

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Going back to the whole Tau seeming to be closest to Covenant thing..

It's actually funny you mention that as I was thinking about doing a little display piece of a Space Marine jacking a Devilfish in Halo-like fashion. Yanking out a Tau guy with one hand or simply just beating on the top of it with a fist.
