I think it is IG because they have so many units and special characters. It's impossible to memorize all their rules. I have started marking down exactly what is in each Chimera/gunship now.

I'm trying to learn Dark Eldar, and by your standards, I'd have to vote for DE- not only are their rules unique and archaic, but no one but a DE player knows them. ><

My vote is for Necrons. Their book is just every odd rule GW could think of thrown together. Against less savy players you could ignore that 'not allowed to chain teleport' rule for some major carnage. After that I'd vote DE, simply because of their rarity.

Hmm... dark eldar quite possibly, because the book is full of legal dirty tricks. So opponents are going to complain about seeing it, have you point out in the rulebook that you can, and then be hesitant to call you out again later if you do something odd.
I'll agree partially with the 'only a DE player knows the rules', my first tourni I got thumped all bar one match, got the wooden spoon. The only guy I did well against was the one that went on to win. Mostly because he was another DE player, I knew what he could do, and we spent a match doing everything we could to exploit that and being unexpected. (His deepstriking ravangers? Ouch. My jetbikers dodging through a gap in terrain, turboing behind cover, and him realising too late that his HQ and retinue happen to be tucked into the same cover at perfect range during my turn? Half the reason I did well against him)

easy... chaos demons in 40k. considering that the MAJORITY of their rules break the normal rules, your opponent usually has no idea what you're talking about. deployment, morale, shooting, assaulting, deepstriking, etc... they're all different for demons. whenever i play against a demon army, i have to have the opponent's codex next to me as i end up offending them by questioning all the BS stuff (not necessarily overpowering just SOOO different) the demons seem to do.

Dark Eldar. The Codex is two editions old, full of quirks and you have a better chance of finding nuggets of Kryptonite than DE players. So when the average player actually does run into a DE player he most likely has absolutely no idea what he is facing.
Here in Jyväskylä we have the fortune to have one such rarity. Our local Dark Eldar player is the only known member of his species within a 100 kilometer radius. Although he mostly plays Fantasy, he is still identified as "that DE player" .

Glad to know I'm cheating because I'm a DE player. Nice topic title btw . Personally, whenever I play anyone unfamiliar w/ DE I take the time to explain things either before game, or before I use an item/unit. It has to be done for the obvious reasons everyone has pointed out previously. Then again any games I play are casual and non-tournament related.

Yeah, but at least the acts of faith are on one page, and fairly straightforward for costs and effects. DE have weird stuff all over the armory and unit entries, that do all kinds of flaky stuff.

Depends on the local situation of course. In our local area we have exactly one DE player. Necrons, SoB and Chaos Demons are more or less tied on the number of players ( anything from 2 to 4 for each ).

I hope no one is pulling out the "I don't like your army so you must be a cheater if you use it" whine.
I've been cheated by a player using an unfamiliar codex in a tournament before. Didn't know til after the game. Deliberately misinterpreting rules to your advantage because your opponent didn't know any better is not the same thing as getting beating them with rules they didn't know about. I chalked it up to a learning experience, and to know not to trust that player.
When it happened to me, in my first or second tournament, one of the guys from my shop saw what was going on and grilled me after the game. A few words between him and the tournament organizer, then a few questions to me from the organizer, and that guy got fed to two of the best tournament players in the city the next two rounds. Both knew what had happened and turned the dial up to eleven for him. Both were also very familiar with his codex and picked apart his "misinterpretations."

The old Chaos Codex was a good candidate. It became a real chore to ensure everybody's Demon Prince was legal.
Current IG/Demonhunter/Witch Hunter combo builds are probably the hardest for me to determine if shenanigans is occuring. However, I believe the IG FAQ clarified some of the craziness.
Playing against some Ork armies using big Nob units that are questionable WYSIWYG can get shady (IE: wound distribution)
Fully mechanized armies where units seem to magically jump from blown up transport to mobile transport; fun times.
Necron WBB/Res Orb/Monolith interpretations. I seem to see very different rule interpetations nearly everytime I play someone with a Necron army.

I guess my area is odd, because I am one of the two active DE players (and the one that is always hanging around and still ironing out all the quirks in the main rulebook and how they modify my own) so I just keep the codex handy. I tend to be constantly refering to it anyway. 'Erm, what was the BS of that beastmaster, I don't think I've ever actually shot with him, I just run...'
Another reason my area is odd: we have more active SoB players than loyalist marines. We're more likely to get stumped on Tau rules.

Thats funny, but at the same time true. If your playing against someone that just doesnt know, you could take the best of blood angles, black templars etc, and easily say "well yea they are all SM so why not"? And that reasoning really kind of makes sense lol

IG with allied Sisters and Inquisitors. Pretty much every rule is bent by some portion of that army, so if you want to cheat, stack those all in and make sure to buy those Inquisitors lots of retinue and wargear.
It's almost impossible not to cheat with Dark Eldar, though. They have so many wierd rules that it's hard to play all their wargear correctly without taking insane amounts of time.

What weird rules are you people talking about? Combat Drugs: Just pick options, and roll... Agonizer: "Poisoned" power weapon Mandrakes: Ok, yeah.. weird.. but no one uses them Wyches: A little odd, but just halve your WS when attacking, and you're good. Jetbikes: Lost a special rule here. They used to be the only ones that could turbo-boost... Talos Wildfire: Odd, but not complex. Night Shield: Subtract 6" from your gun's range... easy

I'm really hoping that first sentence of mine was taken, 'tounge in cheek', because that's how it was meant. Besides that, I'm sort of glad I don't play tournaments given exactly these sort of reasons. I honestly just don't have the willpower to learn every nuance of every rule from every codex.
One thing this post seems to point out though, which is something that has disturbed me for a year now, there seems to be no real variation between armies now. Excluding of course the ones being mentioned here for their obscure rules. I hate that I have this feeling that 40k has been watered down so extensively. OFC I think lots of that stems from the fact that nearly every 5th ed. codex, excluding Orks and IG, has been Marine related or MEQ....how boring.
