Lately I've been using nothing but my Dakka Dice.

They recently rewarded me for my loyalty by rolling a disproportionate amount of 5's and 6's.

I have a ritual.

If I roll two dice (on a 2d6) and it comes up snake eyes, they are MELTED in the microwave.

Oh yes, same goes for 3d6 and anything further.

I use the reverse diceology aswell on my dice.

I test roll all my dice at the beginning. Then I find the first dice I roll a 6 on and set it aside for important rolls.

What about leadership type tests, and scatter (but only in 40k for scatter)? Those dice would be great in those situations.

I don't do anything special with dice, but I have some really odd rolls. 75% of the time I roll to hit with a Vindicare Assassin (who needs a 2+ to hit), I roll a 1. Most of the time I fire a Melta weapon, I roll a 1. However, this is meaningless, because I hit dead on target with a Scatter dice 90% of the time I use a Demolisher Cannon.

Interesting, my brother uses 2 huge dice with a certain number pointing up to remind him how many Faith Points he has left in a battle.

if I'm rolling for a vehicle save or saves for multi-wound models, and I fail, I use the die that failed to mark the damage. It's more a matter of statistics for me, I hate to think of it as 'punishing' the dice. If I wrote down on the dice how many times they had done 'wound duty' it'd probably be about even among the group.

I also have a pile of wallmart dice that are difficult to roll all at once and almost always roll poorly, so I normally use them as damage markers as well (they are also fairly big dice, so they stand out)

Edit: one of the guys in my club had his dice fail him so hard he left them in his car (in the cold) and then later gave them to his brother....they seem to like his brother better

I have two dice superstitions. Well one's not really a dice superstition as much as a model superstition.

1) If I am firing my heamoculi's stinger (2+ poison and if the guy dies centre the blast template over him and everyone under it takes a hit with S = the models toughness and AP= his armour save.) then it will always hit but never ever kill anything.

2) If I ever use more black dice than red in a handful then my rolls are abysmal.

Secondly, before every game I smear my face with warpaint and cut off the head of a plastic goblin with a hobby knife, cackling maniacally whilst I throw the goblin head into a pit made specifically for the Dice Gods.

One good "dice gawds" story I have is a true one, and kinda creepy.

I was fighting a space marine player who kept continually blowing his armor saves... always ALWAYs rolling a 1 or a 2.

He was getting rather upset with his luck, and became convinced that his dice were unlucky. He further bemoaned that he could never tell if it was certain dice screwing him over, or a fair share from all the dice he continually swapped out for his save rolls.

Feeling sorry for him, I said "Ok, look, use those same dice, and put a mark with a sharpie on the one that you think keeps rolling 1s. IF that marked die indeed keeps rolling 1s... then set it aside. when you go home, line all your other dice up on the kitchen counter, and toss the marked die into a running blender in front of them all."

He laughed, and indeed marked a die. And no kidding- after that litte "pep talk". That marked die rolled 5s and 6s the rest of the game!!!

The Dice have Ears. I dunno if I'd call it a religion.. but there is something there.

For some reason dice religion gets on my nerves I think it could be the sheer stupidity of it all and the prevalence among gamers. Also because I hate it when people say I need new dice because they saw me make a bad roll, it gets annoying.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

O-kayyyy..*backs away slowly*

OTOH, I can't really talk-I'm VERY stuperstitous when it comes to dice:

  • I know it's silly, but I have a feeling that a dice isn't likely to roll the same number twice: For instance, if I roll a six on my armour penertration roll, I use a different dice in an attempt to cause the most damage. Conversely, that one is perfect for a flee roll!

  • The larger the dice, the more likely it is to roll low: I know it sounds stupid, but I've seen it happen time and time again!

  • For the important rolls, I roll in my dice tin lid: again it sounds stupid, but 9/10 times it works!

I never roll the same dice for hits and wounds. Obviously the die has given up its 4+ for that set of rolling (typically guardsmen shooting), it needs to be traded out for a fresh die. i roll three dice for shooting vehicles. In one situation i shot a missile launcher at the side of a hull down battle wagon: 6 to hit, new die, 6 for pen, opponent fails save, new die, 6 for damage result. It was glorious.

I assault with my guardsmen, why dont you?

Have to agree with this. For some reason I seem to do better when the dice match my army's paint scheme. One thing I'd would love to be able to do is get a set of these for my Necron army (which is in storage till the new dex comes out)...

But at $5 each, it would cost $180 for a full set of 36....though my tax refund IS coming so who knows.

My housemate wrote her sociology thesis for undergrad on the wierd habits of gamers. She noted that though many of the gamers she was interviewing came from scientific backgrounds and were often agnostic or atheist, we all had crazy assed superstitions about our dice.
I found that it was more pronounced with roleplaying dice though- Greeny, one of my old D20s from when I was a GM was roundly hated by all my players. And the Dreaded White D20 will always roll low for players, and high for GMs. (I mean, obviously not, and it's just our confirmation bias making us remember the results that support our stupid theory and disregard those which don't, but it's still a bit of fun.)

I've got 36 little orange translucent ones with different coloured swirls and white pips. I also have some big dice of various colours pilfered from board game; the pair of big ivory ones gets used for important rolls, but the red one can be fickle. I also have my Lucky Scatter Dice from the Battle for Macragge box set. I've now had it for some seven years. It rolls hits with amazing frequency and when it scatters the distance rolled is always small or lands the blast on something else.

As for my dice religion, I tend to focus REALLY, REALLY hard on the dice and will them to roll the way I want them to as they leave my hand.

As a final weird afterthought, all of my dice that fall off the table and land badly will become something better when I pick them up and re-roll them.

I try to avoid rolling dice that had rolled lower number for the first time after a succession of successful rolls, as I feel like all the good rolls had been used up, so from then on I only use it for leadership tests, until it starts rolling higher numbers again when I assume that the good rolls have been recharged.
I also try to use sharp dice, and by that I mean ones that don't have rounded corners.

I always buy different dice for each new army I put together or new RPG character.

When certain sets of dice fail me throughout an entire evening of gaming I will throw them out the window of my car on the way home to get rid of them and keep the bad luck from spreading to my other dice. It gives me an excuse to buy new dice often.

Pick up the HackMaster 4th Edition Player's Handbook.

Read the section titled "All Things Dice".

This is the best chapter covering any subject that has been included in any book ever written. Not even Shakespeare has written a sentence that is as awesome as this chapter.

All gamers of any genre should have to read this before they ever pick up a single die.
