Depends on the model but it can be anything from 3-4hrs for a troop in batches of three up to 3 or 4 days for a commander or HQ unit..

A single model would take me about 1-2 hours, but if I were production line painting, a full squad take around 4-5 hours, which brings the painting time down significantly on a per model basis.
Also using washes cuts the time right down, though I rarely use them for a shading purpose, more to bring the colours in line with each other...

I think my average blows out into the weeks threshold... but that's total time, not just time working on the kit. Working on the kit, it'd be greater than 6 hours if I'm going for a character... squads can take just as long if not more since I'm not particularly talented but overly obsessive about details...

If you ignore the time various distractions takes, I'd say 1-2 hours for a model. But sometimes I just feel for taking a break from the model, and then it might stay half painted for a week.

How quickly could I reach tabletop for a simple troop model? Under an hour, excluding dry time for the primer. But I'm talking real tabletop quality, here - the kind that keeps you from being completely embarrassed and won't get you docked points at a tournament, not the "I've seen too many awesome painters on the internet (or am one, myself) and now what I consider 'tabletop' is better than what 90% of the world can manage" kind.

How quickly do I actually take to paint one troop model? Couldn't say, really, since it's usually part of a batch taken in short bursts spread over several weeks. I'd wager it's somewhere around the middle of the range presented, though.

Took me 2 hours to do a 40 man GK army. That was hellish.

Depends on the model, how enthused I am and how enthused I can keep myself. Painting time is pretty consistent at "several hours" per model, but on the other hand, I've got models I haven't finished that I started in 1991. Ones that I intend to finish. Hopefully sometime soon. :/

1-2 hours each. I got really fast when I used to work professionally for a guy out of Gelena Ill. He sold historical 58mm miniatures and used to pay me $5 a fig. I averaged 200 a week.

I would paint entire regenment of civil war minis, hundreds of blue and grey figs with little brass buttons, pipping on legs everything.

Now I can do an entire 2000 point army in a week (If Im not working) or a couple weeks (if I am).

1 model, maybe an hour or so, but i normally paint in batches of several (Guardsmen everywhere!) and nowhere near the level that some people on dakkadakka can!

hah, I scoff at your "hours". Unless I'm doing Necrons, it usually takes me weeks, not hours. I tend to paint at work at night, and assuming I'm in the mood and not too busy, I'll get in around 4 hours of solid painting. I was inspired to do Ork Lootas, 13 over 4 days. That's the fastest in recent memory, around an hour and a half each per loota.

Much more typically is the Scouts I'm doing now, which are almost done and entering week 3. It's not that I'm a good painter - I'm below average on my best day - so much that I get distracted super easily, and I'm just not really feeling it right now anyway, which leads to more distractions, etc. Probably 2 to 3 hours per actual model, but spread out over a very long time.

its really hard to say, take the orks I just finished for example.
at the beginning, I was really painting like mad, about 4 boyz a batch per night spending about 4 hours on it. then on the final 8 boyz....... 2 weeks cause I was tired from work and could not be motivated enough. then I spent Saturday afternoon painting all the eyes and teef for the 44 trooper boyz. on average though, about 2 hour/troop.

I feel so slow lol

Generally it takes me about 4-5 hours per model but i come back to it throughout the day and generally spend about 30 minutes each time.

From sprue to paint on one basic trooper... I might get it done in a days time... 14 hours. But then again, I convert something on almost every model. And I'm one of those people who obsessively pics out every little detail they can when painting.

Bigger things, like my wysiwyg Land Raider with extra armor and dozer blade.... I started it on March 4th this year, and it's almost ready for primer.

I'm just going to say it, and I don't give a flying feth what anyone says, I just put it together, I don't paint very well, I just take time to have 3 colors in 3 appropriate places.

Its hard to say... I generally do batches of between 5-30 models. I might spend an hour putting one color on the whole batch, let it dry then go back with another color. I have never tried one model at a time

For me it depends on whether Im doing marines or Imperial Guard. Well I may not be the best painter on the planet Im far from the worst. If its guard I can paint a whole squad in about two hours using an assembly line setup.

I never paint single models, I do them in batches of 5. I'll do the base coats for all 5, then all the shading highlighting, then a the detail ect. I'll normally sit down for an hour/hour and a half in an evening and it would probably take about a week to do all 5. So I guess that averages out at about 2 hours per model. It will normally be 2 or 3 weeks (sometimes even months) before I'll sit down and do another batch though.

Would have been done with the building and ready for the painting on one of the 9 Leman Russ tanks I started back in... 2007? Then I went and dropped it and that small 5 inch drop broke the pintle mounted autocannon and so I need to fix it.. I just don't want to!

I started my AOBR Warboss yesterday and it feels like I'm getting nowhere, I must have spent like 7 hours on him over the last 2 days and there's still so much to do. This is my first "non basic" troop and you can really tell. I just wish I didn't put it together before painting as it's made painting it a pain in the ass. I originally put him together when I first started the hobby so I didn't know better at the time.

I stripped an old basic Marine to paint after the boss, I need something easy after this!

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

Re: topic

I haven't reallly timed myself. In fact I lose track of time when painting. Also I mostly 'assembly line' paint... I do one color for a bunch of models one session... like I'll do Firewarrior armor for 5 models in something like 3 hours.

Lol. I see what you did there!!

I usually paint to a very good standard. But it takes me forever. Batch painting cuts the average time a bit, but still pretty long. Then I lose interest, then I start another project, then....

about 2 hours for an ork

i black prime a bunch
then rough undercoat skin with foundation green
then i switch to individual mobs mix a small amount of skin green and go from there and as a result all my guys have slightly different skin tones

but my trukk took me a redic amount of time but i got a little obsessive and touched each rivit with mithril silver to give it a nice rivity feel.

Yeah it really depends on the model and the level that I'm painting it to. A basic table top infantry mini takes about an hour or 2 and I do in batches of 5 at a time. The current model I'm working has taken over a month now (although I'm sculpting it from scratch and learning technique along the way.)

About an hour for my guard, 30 minutes or less for a necron. Check my gallery for the quality of my guardsmen, not amazing but I'm happy with them.

My average model (hormagaunt, termagant) takes me about a day to paint, but i like to paint them all to an above tabletop (in my opinion) standard.

I'm another production line painter and until recently, table top was the best you'd get from me, but i've decided to step it up, take my time and neaten up my painting, takes me about an hour for 1 infantry, but if i batch paint then the individual time obviously decreases.

Love the production line way
