Cheers, guys!

@ Frozen Ocean: That's some excellent feedback! I am actually considering adding a bit more cabling to the gun arm, although I think I'll be using the actual cable parts on the other side of the weapon -- good thinking, though!

So, after another round of detailing, I think I'll call my first Chaos Armiger finished, some very minor cleanup work notwithstanding. Take a look:

It's not that easy to make out in the pictures, but I've added teeth to all the armour plates, mirroring a design element you see often on the more recent chaos plastic kits. I also tried to replicate the battle damage you see on the Bloodthirster vambraces on the upper leg armour, to tie both elements together.

Oh, and while I was at it, I changed the one element that I really don't like about the stock Armiger: Those weird twin coils/whatever on the back of the legs. I think it works better like this:

To be honest, it took me quite some time to find the right approach for the model, and I am all the happier for it with the finished conversion. Oh, and I would love to hear your thoughts, of course!

Again, cheers, guys!

So, I realise that the first Armiger hasn't even been painted yet, but seeing how all the arms will remain interchangeable between the two models, I couldn't help myself and had to use the second chainsword arm to build an Ursus Claw harpoon:

And here it is, mounted on the first Armiger:

I wanted the harpoon to resemble the one that I used on my second World Eaters Contemptor, so they at least seem to be variations of the same weapons system:

In addition to the harpoon itself, you can see I have added a drum of chain, then attached the chain to the rear of the harpoon, in order to hind at the weapon's undwinding mechanism. As has been the case with my Contemptor, I obsessed over where to add the mechanism, then ultimately decided to use this approach (and diverge from the way a similar mechanism is included on the Blood Slaughterer Impaler): While an underslung mechanism might have been slightly more pleasing from a visual standpoint, it just seemed more sensible like this

Anyway, here's a closer look at the chain and mechanism:

Here's the thing- that chain would cause a lot of issues while unspooling. Normally the chain would be attached right behind the head, in front of the launch mechanism.

Might I ask where the chaos-y armour plate bit you've added to the upper arm of the chainsword arm is from? I have plans to kitbash a couple of armigers into counts-as helbrutes and I love the way that bit changes the look of the arm.

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ monkeytroll: Thanks!

@ Anvildude: Aw, dang, I knew it wouldn't check out from an engineering standpoint -- oh well, at least it looks cool, eh?

@ tlow009: You mean that small armour plate on the left upper-arm? That's from the Maulerfiend/Forgefiend kit: It's normally used as an armour plate on those magma-cutters (the spiky ball part was cut off the end of the armour plate). Hope this helps!

Sooo, remember that Renegade Armiger at the top of this page? I decided it was finally time to get him painted -- even moreso because I actually vowed him as an entry in this year's ETL event over at The Bolter & Chainsword. So I have been slowly chipping away at the model for a couple of days now, and here's what I have so far:

Cheers for the comments, guys!

@ cheiflibrarian: Someone actually pointed out the same thing over at the B&C! While I will be adding the top carapace - obviously - it will stay unglued so it's still possible to take a look at the pilot.

On a related note, there's a really cool Genestealer Cult Armiger that can be found on the internet. That thing has an open pilot compartment and looks a lot more like some kind of heavy duty exo suit. I think you'll appreciate it!

In the meantime, here's the mostly finished Armiger:

there are still quite a few finishing touches I want to add over the weekend, plus there's also the base to take care of. But I have to be honest with you: I am really rather pleased with the model at the moment, and will happily put off any further painting until tomorrow -- I think I've earned a little rest

Incidentally, there's one thing I would really like to hear your feedback on: My original plan was to add some marauder shields on top of the Armiger's pauldrons, for an even more baroque, chaotic look. Like so:

But now I just cannot shake the feeling that the model actually works better without them -- what do you guys think?

I do think it looks better without. I know you use them in other places, so they might be worth including just to keep a similar aesthetic across your army.

Not that he looks bad with them on, I just like the cleaner lines.

Maybe if you move the Marauder shields to the front of the pauldrons (facing forward), rather than the centre? (You could even double up and put some on the back facings too...) Might have been nice to make the hatch removable rather than the whole top, but it works both ways (and easier this way!)

Cheers for the feedback, everyone! Regarding the shields, I have decided to leave them off -- something about them just doesn't quite click with me, now that everything has been painted.

Speaking of which, I can actually share the finished model with you today! YAY!

The main thing that was still left to do was to deal with the detailing of the cockpit and reactor section, and I am pretty happy with how that area came out. Take a look:

For the cockpit displays, I chose an approach I had seen earlier on a Knight by fellow hobbyist Noigrim -- I really liked the idea of approaching enemies being visible as red dots on the radar

And here's a closer look at the reactor section:

This is how the whole assembly looks when seen from the side, by the way:

From a conversion perspective, this is probably the most involved customisation on the entire model, but I do think it has been worth it.

And here's the finished model, based and ready to crush the servants of the False Emperor:

The Hound
Enkidu Lance
attached to the XII Legion's 4th assault company

And a couple of detail shots:

First up, the Armiger with its carapce removed and a closer look at the pilot:

In fact, the entire model retains a certain amount of modularity:

Here's a side view that gives you a better idea of the detail work on the undercarriage:

A detail impression of the Hound's battle honours:

Seeing how Armigers could possibly serve their masters for centuries in the Great Eye, I thought it was only appropriate to include a banner showing off the pilot's personal feats -- at the same time, I also wanted to make it more rugged than the banner on the bigger Knight, so I painted it as some kind of roughly tanned hide. I am pretty happy with the finished effect.

I have also finally managed to take a picture of the face that shows of the glowing eye:

Oh, and here's a picture of "Father and Son", so to speak:

In fact, I discovered that my older Wargrinder conversion could actually work as an Armiger fairly well, at least from a scale perspective:

Brilliant work. The red is amazing.

I agree with you on the shoulder shields. If They has been a bit more flush it might have worked better. As they were they looked a bit lime someone had stuck some shields on there rather than being integrated bits of the suit.

That is an angry looking stompy robot. Well done.

That Armiger turned out great. The cockpit details are very well done, and I definitely agree with your decision to leave the shields off. They broke up the lines of the model and not in a good way.

Cheers for the kind words, everyone!

@ Nevelon: Look, it's just a helmet and half a shoulderpad on that base -- maybe... the guy got away?

...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Fat chance!

So the heat is back in force at the moment, and I am also still feeling a bit drained from the last paintjob, so I have been doing some light kitbashing ovet the last few days, creating some early mockups for my second Renegade Armiger. First of all, I tried to come up with a suitably original, and slightly sinister, head.

I didn't want the head to look like a daemon face or another "classic" skull face, because that approach has already been sufficiently explored with the skull-like face on the first Armiger. This time around, I wanted to experiment with something that looks like a more robotic, mask like design that has had some elements grafted on to look intimidating and sinister, When building the mockup for the facemask, my inspirations were Biohazard's recent try to channel Darth Nihilus' facemask on his own Armigers, a couple of the creepier bug creatures I've encountered during my recent playthrough of Hollow Knight -- oh, and if there was one direct visual influence, it's Volund, a creepy automaton from ADB's and David Sondered's very cool webcomic series "The Road to Jove":

artwork by David Sondered

Anyway, here's what I have come up with:

I am still not quite sure whether I like it better with or without the lower jaw: I think it looks really cool in the above picture, but there's also something very sinister (almost insectile) about the setup without a lower jaw:

Maybe it's a decision I have to make once the head has been painted...

Here's a - very early - mockup of the second Armiger:

Unfortunately, this model can only really take shape once I've managed to get my hands on another set of Bloodthirster vambraces - or, failing that, vambraces from Skarbrand. If anyone has those bitz and would be willing to trade, please let me know!

Oh, and I have also started with the assembly of the cockpit and the pilot -- meet "The Huntress":

Still early days, I mostly focused on trying to at least get all the elements that need to be present in there

As always, let me know what you think!
