If you love "The Disposessed" and "A Wizard of Earthsea" you might enjoy a Podcast called Mythgard Academy. They do academic readings and discussion on fantasy, sci-fi and classic literature and did "The Disposessed" a couple of years ago and more recently covered "A Wizard of Earthsea"
It's a really interesting listen and I heartily reccommend.
They've also covered Dracula, Dune, and a whole host of Tolkien (it's originally a Tolkien thing)

Also, I kinda like the gas mask snout. If you had a flamer for it instead of a Bolter it might tie in well. Horns are excellent!

He's got to, he's just stolen a bunch of stuff from space marines!

Don Qui Hotep wrote:Keeping on with the "aliens, mutants, and other such strays." It's fun to get these ideas blocked out. I'm getting kind of a Tarellian Dog-Soldier vibe from them.

Also a big fan of Ursula LeGuin! The Dispossessed is in my top five books of all time, and she's easily on of my top three favorite authors. Left Hand of Darkness is of course a classic, and Lathe of Heaven is so unpredictable and beautiful. I only read the first Earthsea book but enjoyed it quite a bit.

Thanks! Making these guys has been some of the most fun i've had in a while.

Have you read her short stories too? The collection the Wind's Twelve Quarter's is one of my favorites. And her book of writing exercises is an excellent read for people who want to write.

Thank you! I haven't listened to too many podcasts but that one sounds neat, I'll check it out.

I wish i had a flamer to use, that would have fit well.

But for now, something rather different! I've been working on something else to cross out another box on the bingo sheet, and also just because it's fun. I've had these guys (half the box for the tempest of souls set) around for a bit. and i roughly finished them! So that checks off the box for finishing one half of a starter set, and i have some completed ghostly friends now!

Spoiler:

Next will probably be one more of the snouty aliens, i found another snout! That will make five total, a good little squad.

Nice to see you reducing the pile of the unpainted and getting another square on your bingo card.

Thanks, CB! Yeah, it definitely feels good just to get some things done. Hopefully i can keep it up.

For now, here's one more of these guys, probably the last for a bit

And here's all five of them as a group! including the one i started to paint and then stopped because it was going horribly. that one will be repainted for sure.

What next? Who knows!

The last one looks like a leader, to me. He oughta be in the front (unless, like the Skaven, for these mutants the leader's traditional place is in the rear).

They have a nice mercenary feel to them. Would be fun to see them all painted up!

What next? Now we name them and write stories about them and make them a real in-universe THING that really is, because they exist and should exist and must continue to make the grim-darkness of the far future that little bit better? Maybe?

He does feel leaderish! I think that these guys are bold, bold and daring. I just need to come up with a color scheme for them.

Yes! I'm actually working on a whole slew of ideas right now, it promised to be... silly. Grim silly. Is that a thing? It should be.

BobtheInquisitor wrote:I can’t really make out his facial details well. Is he a wise old turtle leading a team of radical rats?

Sadly i don't think these guys like pizza that much. They're more like pig snouted lizard people.

Grim-Silly is deffinately a thing. Smirking is Grim-Silly. Grim-Silly is my jam. (I suspect I'm not the only one as it's largely why we're all here enjoying Chaos otters and the like.) Looking forward to your Grim-Silly progress.

Grim-sillly is one of my favorite genres. Take Discworld for example - there's plenty of dark magic and Lovecraftian bits, and many truly evil, evil characters. But it's also got orangutans, a grim reaper for rats, overweight wizards, and loads other silly things.

That circle of otters really made me grin, by the way. Apparently if you put enough adorable critters into one place, they turn ominous.

I bet It sounds adorable when they discuss their merciless battle tactics. “Brother Blastifur, you are the rock. Captain Scrufflecles and I will form the belly. We will smash them! Then we will chomp their om-nom-noms. They will know they are doomed as surely as if they felt our warm, fuzzy tummies under their skulls, awaiting the deathblow at our dainty paws.”

Thank you so much everyone! I'm really glad that the otters are such a hit, and that each of you interprets them in a slightly different way.... All part of my brilliant plan. And the plans of the otters.

Also, my space marines are, of course, the Void Otters, and I have decided that the chaos guys shall be known as the Voice of Lutra. Both have otters, for different reasons. But what are those reasons?

And grim silly is now definitely a thing! We shall lead the way with out slightly off-beat but still somewhat dark creations.
This is not the most exciting update, but I tried slapping some paint on one of these guys

Not the best work but i think the scheme is working.

Ooh, that green fits these guys perfectly. The spot red on his tongue pops in a fun way as well.

For some reason I've started calling these guys "truffle dogs" in my head. Perhaps they seek out employment following their noses, accepting payment only in truffles for their gourmet repasts.

Thanks! That tongue was the most fun part. Also I like truffle dogs! That does fit with my overall idea for them too, in that they're kind of a wandering people without a fixed home.

Thanks, and just wait for the end of this post!

Ha, they do have a bit of that look. Thank you!

Well, i'm not calling them complete but the whole squad has paint on them now at least!

It feels pretty good too!

I'm going to try to make another interesting kit bashed alien soon, just need to do some digging.

Hey, the truffle-dogs have paint on em! That's great. I love the guy yelling in the back of the squad.

Thank you! he's my favorite too. And Truffle Dogs is their official name now, it is decided.

This is how i am leaning but it seems that green and pink is winning

BobtheInquisitor wrote:Reminds me of the Electric Kook-Aid Acid Swarm.

Thank you! I like them too, the bone takes a lot of layering but it's worth it in the end.

Right now it looks like green and pink is the winner! Will i follow the vote of the masses? Maybe!

So this is not something i made, but it is related to my hobby, and i am excited about the fact that i found it. behold, the thing that got me into hobby stuff in the first place!

This is a ship my father made, before i was born. it was one of my most beloved toys as a kid (even though i was only allowed to touch it under the most CAREFUL supervision). I spent a long time just looking at it, and when i learned that my dad had made it himself, i was stunned and would eventually want to make my own! It's been missing for years, and it's obviously a bit battered, but finding it was like finding a long lost friend.
