Subject: Games Workshop Japan going to start using new "measure"

Hi!
Today,Games Workshop Japan announced that they are going to stop using metric system and start using "completely different" measure, called "MV" on their (translated version) rule books.
Here is the detail(you must change country to Japanese to see this page)
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?aId=20300013a
It says,They are stop using metric system and start using MV near future. 1 MV is equivalent to 1 inch.
Also says, next army book( VC) will be written in metrics but there is also MV value next to it.(it is announced on twitter)
Japanese version use metrics all the time. Now,we are no need to play in metrics on their hobby center.
But why they are not using inch instead of "MV"? I do not know.
Some says ”Japanese law of weights and measures” denied using inch, but GWJ dose not state anything.
Overall it's nice change. But also kinda weird.
Anyway,GWJ doing weird things all the time....we already got used to it.
I think it dose not affect almost all dakka members but I want it to be known.

When I go to Nagoya we play in inches and the last time I played in Osaka inches were the norm. Must say that it´s becuase the inflence of the US/Brit players around but Japanese players did not have problems adapting.
I don´t mind GW unifiying measurements but why they can`t call it inches and have to use MV is beyond me, in Spain it was the same, it´s not like inches are a secret codeword that can´t be used without the Tokyo Metropolitan police jumping on you.

I believe so. People around me(Tokyo area) also play in inch.
But if you say inch in public, armored Tokyo Metropolitan police would arrest us....in future not today.

Movement Value,maybe. Or Just "Movement"
In article,GWJ says read MV as "Move(mu-bu)".
But I also think it could be "MAXIMUM VELOCITY",sounds cool,eh?

I think in some countries it is actually law that all measurement must be done in metric by a certain date. They give like 50 years to switch over and then you're not allowed to sell any rules with inches on them.
Thus GW gets around it and doesn't have to republish every rulebook and end up with weird discrepancies between countries.

To be fair Field of Glory uses a similar system where 1 movement value equals either 1 inch or 25mm. This allows the game to be played in metric and imperial measurements easily.

+1 for the hard effort kendoka. However even with that logical appraisal i'd still argue inches are better for Warhammer and it's derivatives, It just keeps the numbers small.
Also Japan need to keep in line with how the rest of the world play the game. The difference between 2.5 cm and an inch maybe small but added up over 6" and your playing a different game than everyone else, particularly in the shooting phase where ranges are longer.
Just easier on everyone globally to use inches.

Have you seen the Hell Dorado rules? Measurements are in fathoms.... which is a real-world unit of measurement... but for game purposes they equal inches...

The story that this leaves out is that previously, in order to avoid using inches, all of the Japanese codices and army books had been written using the conversion factor of 1 inch = 2 cm, in order to avoid an unsightly half centimeter showing up anywhere. That's why the note at the bottom of the page says to convert 2cm to 1MV value.

I agree. I have no loyalty to either the imperial or metric system per se. Try working in the building industry in the uk where we have "converted" to metric.
Mv: metric value? Maybe instead of 2.5cm it'll say 1mv. Simple

Other way around. Easier to just use metric, and work to phase out the Imperial system entirely. 40k should just be rewritten for the Metric system natively.
With the release of 6th edition, they're really making a mess of it. Trying to completely reboot the core system while trying to leave parts of it in tact for older codecies and players, which defeats the entire purpose of a reboot. If they want to make such huge changes, might as well just pull what they did for 3rd edition, and change the measurement system to boot.

Hahaha thats a genius idea! but instead of using inches, MV's or cm's, convert all of the rules to use your own unit of measurement that's a pain in the ass to measure with normal tapemeasures. That would mean you have to buy GW's own ones!

This might seems bit radical, but why don't you have measuring tapes with metric going down one side and imperial on the other? Our rulers are the same, so you can measure in either.

This is the same stupid euphemism GW has been using in the LOTR Spanish edition and in the latest WFB edition. If they don't want to use cm it's ok, after all the games were designed to play in inches. But call them inches! In Spain this measuring tapes are very common. I don't know where they are usually made, but they are pretty cheap and should be easy to find in hardware stores:

I find this a bit hard to believe. I've honestly never encountered a measuring tape that did not have both inches and centre metres.
