Yeah this is what this whole things about.
At which point, the price will increase until people stop buying it.
Etc.
If it was literally "LET'S MAKLE AS MUCH MONEYS AS POSSIBLE GUYS", they'd increase the price ten-fold tomorrow.
Actually no, to maximize profit there is a sweet spot above which you start to loose money due to fewer sales.
So yeah.

Just buy minis from a competitor and play 40k much more cheaply. It's not like they run tournaments which have to prevent you from using non-GW models anymore.

Petrol price increases and model cost increases are not an apt comparison; fuel has, and probably will continue to, increase in value (or rather cost) significantly faster than everything else.
A more accurate assessment might be made against something that isn't taxed so heavily and with such a huge fluctuation in price whenever America decides it wants its troops to get a tan, such as bread, or any other basic item.
Hell, even median wage would be more appropriate.
Personally I've not bought anything from GW in quite a while and have branched out into other games and systems as well. In addition I have sold most of my armies and kept a couple that I like the most at reduced points levels so I can still play but don't have millions of models still.
Don't intend any more purchases from gw other than ebay'd new rule book and codexes for my 2 armies so I can keep using what I have.

I've already pretty much bought my whole space marine army (about 2 companies worth...) straight off Ebay. GW's last price rise had already pretty much lost me. And now, well, I've got 2 companies to paint...
So, chances are, it'll be another year of only buying supplies (I still can't find a decent brush for much cheaper than GW's) and the occasional terrain small piece directly from GW. Any particularly shiny new models (Storm Talon...), will be from Wayland as before. Anything else? Ebay

I haven't brought a Games workshop model in 2-3 years... and i don't plan to.
I live in Australia and over here the prices are INSANE i would CONSIDER buying it if i could get them at UK or US prices (even then probably not or extremely infrequently). but currently there is just not way.
The prices have prevented most of my friends from buying and effectively shutdown the game in our group. Then (i think it was late last year) Games workshop cut off online retailers from selling to Australia. The only option available to us now is ebay.
So yes i have boycotted them, i haven't brought a model in 2-3yrs

This.
The 2009 median weekly earnings in the USA was 734usd, while in australia it was 1062usd. The difference in wages (and higher minimum wage of 14ish aus dollars) contribute to the higher cost of goods of everyone in aus. www.atlantalivingwage.org (half way down)
Not that it is right a company can effectively ban people from selling their goods at row prices to aus, so the company can sell those same goods at inflated aus prices.

I disagree that Purifiers are appropriately priced. The 25% increased cost, isn't because of survivability, it's because the massive increase in offensive power.
You get Hammerhand, Cleansing Flame, Force weapons, and an extra attack A standard power weapon alone costs 3 points less than another Tac marine, in the SM codex.
However, this is a tad off-topic.
On-topic. We knew it was coming. People talk of Boycotting every year. Doesn't really work. GW will eventually price themselves out of too many customers, and the rate they are going though. We'll see how things go after the Hobbit.
I was wrong actually - 50% increase in cost, forgot purifiers were 24 compared to GH at 16,for essentially the same number of attakcs.
Non-optional upgrades *always* cost less than optional ones. Because you dont have any choice in the matter.
The same naive comparison as you did shows that banshees should also cost about 30ppm. They dont, for the good reason that they arent worth that much. Purifiers are appropriately costed.

Stawman argument is strawman.
London has a measurably higher cost of living than the rest of the UK and correspondingly higher wages. Someone living on a london wage elsewhere in the UK would be considerably better off than people doing the same job getting paid the national average.
The aus shipping ban would be similar to internet retailers stopping online sales into london and instead having a dedicated london online store that sold the same items at the inflated london prices... Ie the prices set by higher ground rent and wage conditions for highstreet stores in london.
Not saying it is right, but that is how it is. Not sure that the average earnings and costs of operating in aus justify the level of mark up either.

There are plenty of ways to cut corners in this hobby, but paint brushes are most definitely an area you don't want to cut corners. I always buy high quality sable brushes from an art supply house for my painting. The first key to a decent paint job is a decent brush. Of course I have no problem spending good money on decent brushes, but don't find GW brushes really up to snuff...

I can honestly say, bar a ridiculous price hike, to the magnitude of, say, $200 for a Land Raider, I'll keep buying GW. Why? Simply, I like 40k. Now, if they hike up their prices to, say, $100 for said land raider, I may buy one of them and another unit or two, instead of three of them and odds and ends, to eat up a summer. If GW wants to hike their prices, they're going to have to accept the fact that a lot of people will be buying less. That's a business decision.

No, but in areas where the median income is higher across the US prices are different. The amount of money you can comfortably live off of in a year is drastically different between Silicon Valley or NYC and backwoods Appalachia or some quiet rural community down South. For the cost of a small house in the Silicon Valley area in California you can afford a veritible mansion in other locations.

As I've seen it, it's not a game like D&D, where it's commonplace to play a game in 3rd or 2nd edition, even if we're already up to... I think it's 5th now? AFAIK, people don't really do that in 40k. So if you wanna keep playing, you're going to need to at the very least buy rulebooks and codexes to keep yourself up to date. Edit: Of course, you could always find a different game to play. IMHO, though, 40k's fluff does it for me every freaking time. I love the setting, I love the atmosphere, I love it all. Every time I think about a different game, I come to the realization 'It's just not 40k' YMMV.

Think again.
During that same time period that gas prices have gone up 240%, and space marines 200%, the price of gold has increased just slightly less than that (194%), while the price of a pound of bacon has nearly tripled (293%). The price of ground beef has gone up 83% in the last three years alone, much less the last 25.
The price of 40k has not substantially increased over the cost of inflation over time, all for a marked jump in quality. If you're angry at the fact that prices go up over time, perhaps you should direct your anger at the developed world's central banks that print money like it's toilet paper, rather than at producers and distributors just trying to continue to make ends meet against devaluing currencies.
As for Australia, that one should be obvious as well. You have a much smaller market (not as many 40k players down under as in the US or Europe), that is much, much farther away. These two combined make distribution more expensive. Then add to this the fact that Australia has a relatively slightly weaker currency than the UK at the moment (1 USD gets you 0.63GBP, but 1AUD only gets you .62), and britain needs to charge extra just to stay even. It's a problem that all exporters face.

In 1987, space marines were £0.75 apiece. The price for a litre of petrol in 1987 was £0.387. In 2012, the price of a space marine is £2.30 apiece. The price of a litre of petrol as of this month is £1.338.
The cost of a space marine has increased just about 200%, while the price of petrol has increased 245%. Perhaps you might want to get your facts straight before you start bitching and moaning.
Are you an idiot, comparing it against a commodity that has gone through the roof. if GAS had kept stable with average inflation it'd be in the buck and half range right now. it's not.
No sir, You are the idiot. on average, a single American uses 600 gallons of petrol a year. Ethiopians use less than 40 gallons a year. Petrol is not a commodity, you don't NEED it. People have been getting around just fine for thousands of years without motorised transport. Just because it saves time and effort to use a car doesn't mean that it is the "be all and end all". At current consumption rate, we will run out of Petrol in less than 40 years.
40 Years.
Then it's back to Horses, Bikes and good ol' ground pounding.
