- Seriously, final warning. 'Didn't read the whole thread' is not an excuse for ignoring moderator instructions. - insaniak - EDIT: Ah, just read page 24 fully. As for this game I think it looks good, but have to agree with most posters that it does not have enough draw for me to pick it up as a stand alone game. It does look high quality though, and if I were interested in that genre I would definitely buy it.

Also, what warhammer race would the floating "ghost ship" line up with? Just another aspect of vampire counts?
The ghost ship seems to just be part of the many Undead that run around in the Warhammer world (plus an irresistible Flying Dutchmen reference). I think I caught the video mentioning the Swordfish ship captain chick is a "suspected mutant"...Chaos follows us even over water. I guess they dropped a Dark Elf ship to get more non-traditional ships in. Plus if you want to justify it fluffwise, DE usually use Black Arks as homebases for the smaller ships to return to. But I'm not going to try to justify that last statement against the Araby & TK Super Lazer ship.

I didn't hear them say that "she's a suspected mutant", but I did hear them say that she's "rumored to be the Daughter of Manaan".

I haven't really commented on the quality (or lack of quality) with this game. Honestly I don't care about it - people can play it or not play to their heart's content. I agree with the general opinion that buying sight-unseen (in the flesh) is somewhat of a bad idea, and the idea that GW aren't previewing this in their stores is also a really bad idea. I also agree that this game holds nothing for most general players, unlike Hulk, which had some astonishingly good minis that work with regular 40K. But, all that said, the game itself could the bestest thing since sliced bread and I still wouldn't care about it because it doesn't interest me, just as Man'O'War never interested me. And I'd've preferred Warhammer Quest, a game I do love.

While I don't disagree that some previews would have been a good idea, either in store or at least on the website, I would suspect that the vast majority of boardgames are bought by people who look at the box and think it looks like it's worth a go, rather than by people who have previously tried it or read a review of it. So this is really no different in that regard.

Back on topic - Oddly thinking on it, had this release had another couple of ships each side, to bring back the flavour of the other big players.. No Chaos or Dark Elves for the evil side, no Bretonnian or Lizardmen for the good .. and I might have got it. The cost is a factor, this time next year, wouldn't be an issue, and should 40K come out as predicted with the right mix of figures I'll happily pick up two or three. Bad timing for me, mixed with not awesome enough me to force a purchase. edit - RiTides wrote:There's a scale shot on the "What's New" page. The largest ships are 100mm long: Oh my, they are rather big, that would explain only the ten ships. Cool on one hand, on the other, I think I would have them to be slightly smaller, maybe two thirds which would still be bigger than Man'O War scale, for an extra ship a side. Just seems wrong to me not to have the greatest sea faring nation (see username) in the game.

Yeah I suppose Chaos Dwarf nicked Chaos spot, although a mad Khorne ship filled with marauders/Norse style troops would have been fun.

Doesn't the 10 minute video provide a fairly detailed look at what's inside? I know GW 'doesn't understand the internet' etc, but showcasing a new product with a reasonably well made (if slightly cheesy) video a few weeks ahead of release doesn't seem like a bad idea. They're trying to generate a quick buzz, and a lot of impulse purchases. I'm sure a big proportion of purchasers will be less experienced gamers and kids, who just like the look of it. Many older gamers won't buy it because they can't try it out (or because they're pissed because it supposedly supplanted whatever they thought GW should have put out instead), but a lot will because they're attracted to the models (still GW's main drawcard) and/or they fall for the limited edition approach. I'm prepared to bet that several of the people who are grousing about it in this thread will find themselves shelling out the (rather high) asking price when they actually see it. People also have to understand that the strategy behind a one-off game like this is to generate interest in the rest of the products, which is why it's probably aimed principally at less experienced gamers.
I'm still on the fence. I've always loved big boxed games full of plastic minis and beautifully printed cardboard (Warhammer Quest being a good example), but I'm not sure there's room in my cupboard for it.

I wouldn't know. Other than movie trailers and looping animations with badgers in them, I don't watch videos. If you (hypothetical 'you' not you, personally) want me to check out your new product, give me pictures and a written article that I can skim through at my own pace. Don't waste my time with videos.
They're trying to generate a quick buzz, and a lot of impulse purchases.
Of course they are. And they're trying to do that because they're convinced that a gradual build-up of excitement isn't as effective for selling product. Which may work for a $50 product that everyone already wants... I'm yet to be convinced that it will work as well for a new, rather expensive product that nobody has seen before.
Although obviously the 'limited edition' tag skews things somewhat. I suspect that a very large proportion of these will sell to people who will never play it. These will be the same people who buy all the 'Web Exclusive' models and whatever Limited Edition models they can get their hands on. Not because they like the models, or because they intend to use them, but simply because they're 'limited edition'...

One thing to consider, for those of you on the fence about preordering this sight unseen, is that you can sell a box set of Space Hulk for pretty sweet cash. Odds are pretty good that if you order it and don't want it, someone else on the internet will (and will probably pay more than you did!).
I've already preordered it, for three reasons:
I like pirates.
I have get-togethers with friends who play Warhammer and friends who don't. This would be a good 'in-between' game for that.
It appears to easily scale up and down for different numbers of people, which is handy when you don't know how many people will show up.
Now, if GW could just have released this on the 19th (also known as International Talk Like a Pirate Day).

Any chance we can get a "Who will buy it" poll up on the front page or something? Just curious to see what demand might look like for this one. Also, any concrete number for how many units they are planning to produce worldwide? I saw the 35k number, but it seems kinda low and was unconfirmed...

I was also suprised no Dark Elf given that they have a big fleet and are priatical by nature. Still there is then the possibility of fan creations
I don't think its the Swordfish as I think form the video she is human (or maybe the daughter of a human god as she claims)
Ghost ship - it mentions something about them being spat out by the Realm of Chaos but yes Vampires can command Ghosts. I am lookign forward to seeing the background fluff as I assume each of the captians are renegades from thier won factions - Chaos Dwarf renegage engineer builds squid etc. Tomb King / Vampire alliance is unusual but not unprecedented - thats if the funeral barges occupant is even awake - although it would have been cooler I feel to have him against the Vampire.....
