Not a problem until GW came back to renegotiate a new contract and the other company demanded a bucket of money (millions of pounds).

So GW changed the names of their entire line and to disguise their ineptitude added in a heap more colours (they were planning on doing it but this sped up the arrival).

Also there are supposed to be pigment changes thanks to new manufacturer as people have discussed earlier RE: differing shades of ultramarine blue over the years.

Damn funny!

How many millions will they lose by people dropping the new line of paints? If I only collected GW paints and I had to buy totally new paints I might as well go for other brands you know... cheaper, better more durable and that dont change constantly.
This is specially frustrating because GW biz model consists on selling mass wargames with tons of models and that means one full army takes considerable ammounts of time to be finished as such the consistency on the paints is vital.

What a mess I think its time to start looking for new washes options... one of the few things I still liked to buy from GW, since they changed I'm also inclined to dig further for other options... metals gone, old washes gone, all that's left is the plastics... make it prepainted and yup GW will not have nothing that I'm interested in... thank god I have old rogue trader books and greenstuff to materialize for my collections what IMO gw should be doing...

Oh all the tutorials and painting guides of the past simply will be rendered almost useless now with the new names and new colors and considering the new recent book

Is it the same colour under a new name? Or a different colour?

Following GW legal's behavior in the Chapterhouse lawsuit, I have no doubt this is true

I'll sound daft, but... what difference could a wash make to it?

Nothing, thats just my process, my 'quick bases' are devlan mud and drybrush dheneb stone. With the new textures you'll have to practice alot to get an even coat in one shot, seems to me like a waste of time compared to how Ive been doing for years, but I can see it being useful for new people and for those that dont really care about the end result.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Only GW Legal went to the bottle it seems
Since then the word "bottle" is taboo in GW HQ.

If the trailer is correct...aren't they just adding 145 new paints?

Or have I got this completely wrong again?

The old line will disappear. The 145 will be the replacement paints with the addition of textures, washes, and glazes.

Buy Vallejo?

Not only do you get dropper bottles, but you get more paint and save money! It's like a win-win-win!

I've got no problem with people buying GW if you like the product. But if your complaint is price, package, or quantity, why keep buying it?

I have a hard time believing this, tbh.

I was thinking the same thing about the pokemon parallel. Then I remembered, oh crap, I'm old and can't remember minutiae like I used to. I could see this paint list as useful if I choose to buy a few at a time. So that way, when staring at all those greens colors (for example), I havje a way of checking if I bought whatever color a few weeks ago...

Other than their foundations and washes I don't buy GW paints for the reason I stated above. My personal experiences with Vallejo Heavy (Foundation) is that the paint applies very chalky and suprisingly does not cover well. Again, my personal experiences with both Vellejo's red and orange Heavy (foundation) paint line. So I still purchase the GW foundations, as I haven't found a valid alternative. I still dislike GW's paint pots which dry out over time, keeping the lid open or not. I have had several GW pots dryout without the pots ever being opened in the first place.

I just found the idea of purposely keeping the lid open and thus expediting the inevitable to be a wee bit humerous.

filbert wrote:Why would Yriel Yellow be a counterpart for Iyanden Darksun when it is listed as a layer colour? Presumably the Foundation Paint equivalents will be listed as 'Base' colours?

That's what I thought too originally--but from what Ravenous D says, the Base paints have the same coverage as the rest of the line with no real "Foundation Paints".

That's his testimony of only one color. Plus, it's a red, which are notoriously difficult to make with both bright color and good opacity (hence why foundation red was/is so popular). I have to assume Bases are different than Layers, otherwise it would make no sense to have both Ceramite White (base) and White Scar (layer) let alone have the two categories in the first place.

Your post didn't say that, you simply expressed a desire that they switch to a dropper.

Have you considered transferring your GW foundations to a dropper bottle? Seems like the best of both worlds.

Interesting. I haven't used foundations, mainly because I'm used to having to build up colors. Plus, it lets me determine how dark I want the color, and gives me a wider selection.

I find it's best to just keep a list somewhere of colors for various armies I might need... My Caprice stuff is grey and orange, so note the specific grey and orange, for example.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I haven't found that so far. They do seem to have very little sheen to them (the inconsistency of the finish across the Vallejo range is one of my minor quibbles with them) and like most of the Vallejo range they need a very good shake before use, but the couple of Heavies that I've been using have applied perfectly.

I agree with all of what Insaniak says. I use VGC Heavy Red and it works perfectly. Needs a little thinning but then so do most paints. And it covers much better than Mechrite Red. Sadly the 2 Reaper HD's that I have(Red and Bone) have terrible coverage.

As for the checkbox thing, I'm the kind of kid who'd fall for that and actually 'collect them all'. Or at least I was back then! :p If this list had come out 12 years ago I'd have been an addict.

I don't quite buy the "they signed away the names" story. A number of the paints have generic and non-trademarked names and there are already multiple competitors with identical names. Why isn't there still Goblin Green and Ultramarine?

Though I wouldn't mock GW's legal department that much if it happened. I know of multiple companies that had stuff taken away form them via contract shenanigans in China. It is not uncommon for a company to invest and build a factory only to have it seized by the Chinese government in the of "the people." All the company needed was a bought off judge to make the contract go the Chinese company's way.

It is the peril of working with companies in China.

Even if licensing of the names isn't the REASON for the company switch, changing the formula IS reason for the name change as the colors will NOT be the same as they are now.

I just took a wiff of my Devlan mud and it doesn't really smell "bad". It smells like some sort of solvent. Not as bad as acetone or turpentine.

Because if you change all of the names, it'll look like part of coherent strategy, while if you only change the trademarked names, you look silly.
