Baraboo died out soon after 6th edition hit the tables as well. It took about 18 months before they started getting back into the game. To be honest, the player base there tends to have a real doom and gloom response to GW changes. If not for Ethan, Shannon, and Brian, 40k would have died out in Baraboo for good.

Reedsburg has a stronger more consistent player base with about 10 core members and 10 fringe. it is about a 38 minute drive from your house. For the most part, people in Reedsburg seem pretty interested in 7th edition.

Well my gaming buddies (ok, we're... 4-5) are quite the GW fanboys, TBH, so we'll be digging 7th as soon as it is up...

As we're only casual players, the "Unbound" feature seems like a good thing to us...

The guys at beast of war had a good point about the unbound part. They see it as a way to play fluffy games and not worry about the rules. You just have to plan it out before hand with your opponent. But I don't have a gaming group where I live as I'm the only one I know who has 40k.

So I'm going to probably skip the 7th ed. and just continue what I'm doing.

Mostly, on my phone.

From the rumour mill, I hear lots that I like - mostly elements of WFB and 4th - but just plain too soon. Given how little 6th I managed to get played, though, I'm not overly fussed. I'm not going to invest in the rule book - I don't need another overpriced cutting mat - though perversely I'll see what the starter set brings in reality.

I know up here the local GW is like a ghost town with regard to actual hobbyists (I'm making the generalization that they're people who take the time to paint their own models and are spending their own money) and instead is filled with 10-13 year old kids whose moms didn't want to drag them around the mall. I attended a mega battle 2 weeks back and wound up packing up my stuff and leaving due to the kid next to me throwing a tantrum because his entire deathstar grey knight unit was killed in a single round of shooting. At the point when he started throwing other peoples mini's I figured I'd had enough and left. Long story short its been the same thing here with support for 40k (and GW in general) drying up for games that are easier to understand, don't have moronic rulesets, and actually take customer opinion seriously.

In case any were wondering the local games have gone to a more historical mindset, with Flames of War probably being the most played one (short of card games of course)

Just my 2 cents

I just have to laugh at how often WAAC armies get labled as "fluffy" now-a-days. Give it up Yggs... you just want to kick someone's a$$ on the table... that's OK. Be proud!

Nope

I just want to field an army with 3-4 Devastator Squads, 1-2 Centurion Squads, 1-2 Vindicators, 3+ Whirlwinds, 1-2 Hunter/Stalker, and a trio of Predators... Led by their heroic captain and his command squad, the company Chaplain, Librarian, Techmarines... And maybe a TFC or two...

How is that WAAC ?!?

[side note : when we play with my team, we usually tend to be more "generous" (for instance charge distances, weapon ranges, re-rolls of fallen die) if you play in character... Whether that helps one side or the other ! What's important is to create, build, live & tell a story ! But I agree that allowing unbound armies in tournaments could become.... dangerous ? ]

I'm in for 7th, the unbound rules means my CSM army becomes valid again as all my troops were moved to the elites slot in the current codex.

As primaraly a painter it also gives lots of opportunity for painting anything I want and fielding it, although I wouldn't run things that I wouldnt see not going to gether from a fluff point.

Then I hardly play real people so all of the above doesn't count for much, I expect the few tournaments I do play will be battle forged.

Well, I wasn't really asking for a referendum on 7th... just wondering if anyone else had seen a shift of interest towards or away from GW in the last month or so as a result of the new edition.

I'll have a copy of the new rules waiting for me at the shop once it's out... so I'm not boycotting it by any means. Just worried.

Every player in our club who is over 15 ( about 3 quarters) have moved to FOW, X-Wing and WFB. We only see one or two tables a month being used for 40k and it seems to be several kids banding together field a playable force on either side of the game due to the price issue.

Am kind of intrigued with 7th incorporating aspects of WFB, could bring about a renaissance

I'm hopeful, as the last two editions is where I actually began to try and learn the game but found the absolute cacophony of rules and sub rules and rules you use when someone uses another rule just quite frankly too much for me to take in for a fun game, so, I hope this time it incorporates more of a fun 'game' vibe rather than a more professional gamer feel which I thought was where it was aiming last edition, unbound is going to cause some raging but I think for a lot it will work and provide another way to actually play your force in a fun way, if one can take unbound then two can take unbound for an epic battle or one can try the chart and test their skills :-)

Well, my gaming "group" is going to 7th, cause I am going to buy it, read it, and let Ice borrow it. I want to try to force in more games even though he works weekdays and I work nights and weekends. I"m super excited about it though.

I can't remember the last time I played at my local gaming store so I can't accurately add to your observation Gits, but I am really excited about 7th. Instead of it being a whole new addition, it sounds as though they really addressed the problems a lot of people were complaining about 6th and simply updated it. Now, whether or not they did that effectively, I have no idea, but I'm really excited to check out the rules and get some games in. The unbound business I don't think will ever be used by me. When you play BA, Tyranids, and Orks, there are lots of uses for Troop choices. I'll let you know if any ridiculous ideas come to mind though.

I do have hope that they've fixed some of the issues in 6th, I'm just concerned that Unbound might be a straw that breaks the camel's back. I know I don't *have* to play Unbound... but I do like tournament playing and if Unbound becomes the standard tournament format I know I won't be able to field a list that's even competitive enough to have fun with. That is unless there are some real surprises in the new objective format. Not being able to contest objectives isn't much compensation when your opponent can table you reliably by turn 3.

I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks...

My FLGS is seemingly in trouble... there's a tourney at the end of the month that is still using 6th edition rules, and I'll play in that. We'll see if 7th fixes anything, but I'm pessimistic about it. If I do quit 40k it will be for Blood Bowl, Flames of War and X-Wing.

People come and go all the time, depending on this "real life" thing I hear about.

But it is funny that there is a feeling of disappointing (seems a bit of a strong word, but can't think of a better one) the viewers, and needing to update regularly. Many a quiet spell has finished with a post of "Sorry I've been quiet but real life..."

Come back when you're ready.
