Gits - Yeah! Although it's just about this time of year that it starts to feel not so lucky - having a huge heat sink a few inches under my feet doesn't work so well in the depths of winter

vik - Cheers mate!

KC - Thanks man, I'll be keeping an eye out to see what you do with the idea

weety - Cheers! I think I need to concentrate on getting a few bits and pieces finished, rather than worry about getting them perfect - not that I'll ever achieve that, but hey. I can live with terrain pieces being not quite up to scratch - at least, I tell myself I can.

And on that note, let's take a look at an old, old friend:

Not a huge amount of progress since he was last spotted - final details and a base. It's been such a while since he last appeared that he's probably fresh for some of you anyway

And apologies, but I am going to spam a bunch more pics of him in a moment, need to go through the shots taken in the lightbox first

OK, lightbox pics of above dude, and an attempt at using GIMP to collage:

Hmm, thought I'd sorted those white spaces, oh well, next time monkey, next time

A few more oldies geting some paint, but no more will be finished tonight as it's now dark and rainy outside, so no sealing. Depending how it goes, maybe something later.

In the mean-time, a blast from the past (the real past, not this thread ) gets stripped of his old metallics to get a re-paint.

Oh have not seen that model in decades, the one with the wild gun! Space Pirates range from GW if I am correct as to what it came from?

Ah, I think that they had kept them anyway for pirates and mercs, but yes, you can see pre-MK-1-6 Pwer armore concepts in that mini. Included are also the chain blade attachement from the old RT days of SM

Really hope they put Cyboars back into the Codex as Boarboyz are one of my favourite Epic units.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. vik - Glad you think so, me too, and thanks.

That'll be my old favourite yellow again

I'm still deciding on a good scheme for him, I keep rejecting the ones I've come up with so far.

Arakasi - Only one croissant per looted moon ship, aye

Cheers, I didn't get it all to gel together as much as I'd hoped, but it'll do

Just need to check back in the blog to find what plans I had for the other riders now

I'll try!!

shaso - Yeah, I think he may have been re-issued or kept around, I have two and I'm sure I picked them up years apart. Was hoping to dig out those very same marines too, but they seem to have absconded from their expected lurking place...most perturbing....

Llama - Cyboar chemical injectipn FTW

Rummaging around earlier for the afore-mentioned marines I cam across my stash of 80's guard/mercs patiently waiting to become a rogue trader's force, when I realised how easily most of them could become Mega-City 1 cits/perps. With extensive drops of Dredd figs incoming I may have to re-look at my plans for that RT force

And another one gets a risky dose of fog-bound sealing...

what i am feeling a bit not sold on is that cablearm on his right... too flimsy looking for an ork if i may utter my opinion here...

Gits - Glad to amuse Have to inject that odd light note now and again- contrary to popular belief it's not ALL grimdark in the 41st

ldd - Orks recycle loads, orks is green

Anvildude - Opinion amongst UpZag's mob is divided on the two - whilst most acknowledge that the Challengers are a better lot than the Warriors, they also say that the JunkYard has some interesting bitz that they never see in the ScrapHeap

vik - Cheers! The flames were an idea Arakasi mentioned for another build - I ignored his advice there but used it here instead

Agreed on the cable arm - one of the 'small details' I realised I hadn't finished was the fact that he was supposed to have three mekka-dendrits coming out of that socket

*Activate enthusiastic voice operations mode* Well, by nipping back to the handy index/guide just a few pages back (that's page 50 folks ) I can see that you need to go all the way back to pages 10-12 to see the genesis of this wonder of the roadways.

*Activate depressed voice operations mode* And whilst your there, you may very well notice what state both this vehicular conveyance and the afore-mooted mechanical boar hybrid were left in at that time. Armed with said knowledge you will no doubt find it astounding to see how little was actually needed to progress from then to here....

graven - Thanks bud! Certainly...err, which bit in particular? Most of the cleaner metals go something like this:

Darkened boltgun or mithril, black wash, drybrush with mithril, devlan wash, drybrush with mithril.

Sometimes there's a few more washes, sometimes I'll use liquitex iridiscent silver to get a bit more 'shiny' in there, variations on this basically. If you have a piece in mind I'll try and recall the specific recipe for that.
And I'll try and note more paints down when on those odd occasions when I do use them That is one of the handy things about these blogs after all, much harder to lose than one of the fifteen hundred notebooks that have previously been used for noting colour combos.

Yggs - Never run short of ideas, just the time to get them all out Nice to see you back around.

Yeah, it'll be keeping the boxy cockpit, the valk's far too long for this version, so it'll stay as is. Currently, it's sitting on the 'shelf' at the back of the desk, I'm just letting it stay there, in my line of sight, for a while before getting to work on it.

neil - Thank you, but you can hardly call my static shots atmospheric after all your terrain pics mate No colours on any of the afore-seen pieces to date I'm afraid.
Oh, except for a little bit of work on Da Judj, he's almost done - spurred on by the thought of all the mega-city goodness to come

So, not a lot happening in the workshop at the moment, but a few things have crept in around the revising...

Firstly, I ain't gonna be using many of the old Dredd figures with the new:

Maybe I'll have a whole gang of juve jimps (As an aside, you can see here that Cilit Bang is not as effective as fairy Power Spray in the stripping department )

I spotted this before grabbing shed loads of old minis off ebay to bulk out incoming goodies (as if they need it - or I need more figures to work on ). I had grabbed various figures and bits to build up gangs and citizens though, and all the old GW guys I had earmaked are going to need to find new projects now though

But hey, citizens and muties are all shapes and sizes, especially in MC-1, so I'll still use the guys I was building up as citizens:

Yeah, not the best quality stuff, but they'll do for cits I reckon - trying not to spend huge swathes of time converting stuff up for this, keep it basic (mainly )

Whilst trawling ebay for, well, basically for pretty much anything shiny really, I did find these:

Very nice, Anderson, Chief Judge McGrude and I think Giant - although looking again, I'm not sure that's what the badge reads - guess I'll wait till it's painted up to find out Forgotten where the seller said they were from now, think it might have been Wargames Foundry

They scale a lot better:

Oops, colour. How'd that get there?

Ok, I admit it, I've made a start on a few JD things...

Not too far off actually - and yes I know the riot judges respirator should be red - not sure if the shield's plain yellow or not though?

OK, so some colours, as I said I would, and judges are probably a sensible thing to keep similar

Uniform- Vallejo black with about 4:5 flouro blue added. Reckon I'll not highlight, just gloss varnish - maybe a blue wash first.
Yellow - Tau sept ochre, drybrush with a mix of golden yellow and vallejo pale yellow, vallejo sepia wash, another drybrush, then add more pale yellow for another drybrush and a final of just pale yellow.
Green - Vallejo lime green with about 1:4 intermediate green, drybrush with pale yellow added to mix, thraka wash, drybrush, add pale yellow for another drybrush, catch the tips with a bit more yellow added. (Not the green I was going to go for, I was going to start with gretchin green, but then realised I was very low on that, and didn't want to start now and then have to figure out a similar mix when I do more judges)
Blood red.
Helmet is black, again I'm thinking of just glossing the helmets.

Think the visor will be light blue, darken the body of the lawgiver & add the light, add the boot knives - guess I should have done the handles/guard yellow. That's about it, then decide on how the basing's going to work.

A citizen shows off his new kneepads.

Horrible messy looking base colours so far, but it shows the bright colours I'm going for with the majority of cits and perps. Probably going to go for black-lining on a fair-bit of these guys, think it'll add to the comic-book feel. May end up as devlan-lining or similar, we'll see.

And a slightly larger citizen grabs his synth-burger.

He easily loses a few pounds with those vertical stripes

Will it be a smiley, a logo or just plain yellow? Who knows?

And a lovely family pic to finish

Ahhhh!

Here a friendly don from the ape gang models for Tom Baker's new collection.

That's about it till next time...

There'll be more to come. I'm working on ideas for terrain and vehicles too - obviously something new and shiny sets the ADD off big-time I see a good use of Infinity style terrain here, holo-displays, walkways, vendor units and the like.

I've been re-reading the JD case-files for inspiration, and so now my head is bursting with tangents to go off on

I was asked about size compared to SM, so a few bonus pics on that subject:

So that's a metal DA, most of a metal squat, a new judge courtesy of mongoose, and a plastic SM; all against the lovely backdrop of an old-skool rhino.

And that be a plastic ork, that same judgey-wudgey, and a metal cadian - this time they're posing against a prototype lawmaster..err I mean a marine bike.

And just out of interest, let's see how the orang-utan stacks up to an old GW paranoia guard and a plastic marine.

Be seeing you...

Wow. You are the law. I came across a pack of arbites the other day and considered doing them as straight mc-1 judges. Love the classic figs, especially the fatty - although I feel a watermelon motif would've been more flattering that squat looks perfect in there, btw. graven - Always a temptation with the arbites - I was actually expecting the mongoose minis to be slightly smaller than GW, going to be harder to incorporate all the old-skool hive gangers and imp army dudes into gangs of mega-city now.
I'm more pleased with the fatty than I thought - swapped out a box of them for an ape gang on bikes as I didn't think the sculpts looked all that. Grabbed a single just to bulk out the citizenship and now I've handled one I have to say I'll be getting some more.

Yeah, after putting the squat in that pic I thought he might make it into a cursed earth biker gang. Can't remember the futsie, but for some reason I never got big into the old JD figs, probably 'cause we only played the rpg occasionally, and didn't use figs - I was still focusing my minis on what I played with at that time. However, there will be futsies in my set for sure.

ldd - Well, if peeps go to the effort of visiting and leaving comments, it would be rude not to acknowledge them. Plus it makes it more likely they'll comment again.

Boredom sets in whenever the current total of ongoing projects drops into double figures. No need for inspiration from the movie (although it is very cool, Urban is Dredd! High hopes they'll make the planned trilogy now) I just got caught up big-time in the kickstarter and the thought of those masses of mega-city goodies has me hyped right up! Although some of that was also due to me realising what a wealth of old-skool minis I had that could be used for this - there was a big drop in excitement when I noticed the scale issue, although that passed - there's plenty more goodness for those guys.
The mongoose lawmaster looks pretty cool - I'll wait till I have my gruby mitts on that before making any plans for more - obviously SM bikes as a base are always in the back of the mind due to the numbers of them floating around, but bikes are for later (having said that, I expect the lawmaster in the next week or so)

Don't worry about Del da Boy and Rodnork, they'll still be about - and if you were expecting to see much progress by now you've not been paying attention to how this blog works

Hah, that paint is humbrol enamels from over 20 years ago He was part of a planned diorama based around a 40k bike meet - a beer tent/stage, several bikes of different races parked about, and a drag race between a black vincent and an ork kustom. Who knows, that may re-surface at some point in the misty future, don't hold your breath though.
He's actually been brought up to the table several times in the past for planning purposes - normally around a rogue trader's retinue - no doubt he'll see the light of day at some point - possibly into a mutie gang as mentioned above.

weety - Nah, that's just a single skinner - he's only a wee chappie right?

Well, things should take on some interesting turns from around christmas and well into the new year with the various Dredd, dreamforge, dreadball and bombshell stuff I pledged for - anyone would think I'm running out of stuff to work on. Some of that stuff was got with an eye on the conversion potential obviously, but I reckon there'll be a few more intriquing tangents for me to explore next year - I'm getting drawn to the idea of individual pieces and dioramas again, which was a main focus of mine way back when. Hopefully the byways I take will be of interest to some

Gits - *inhales 'Well man, you know, it's purely medicine...medicati...med..medi...medicinal man. Purely medicinal, it's for pain relied..I've lost an arm if you hadn't noticed dude. Just for pain relief.' Exhales 'Woooooooooooooo'

Dr H - Nah. he ain't the paranoid type, he's ice-cool. But that's because he does believe he's invisible and the judge can't see him

ldd - That's more likely to appear on a dio...Boing however Hmm, a dwarf in a boing ball - You know, the outstretched pose of a bike rider might just work for that, time to hunt the clear balls down me-thinks!

dstein - Yeah, the dwarf bikers know their stuff, but then some of the elf hydroponic set-ups are out of this world

So minor catch-up.

Current state of the citizens:

Paint looks horrible at this stage, but you know, it's colour, and that's not often seen 'round these here parts.
Any ideas for sign slogans? I need to re-read some of the fatty stories for ideas myself.

Got a robodoc on the go:

Decided I wanted the same tentacular arms as the comic version rather than the multi-jointed ones that come with the mini.
I may have to do another running amok

Simple arm move on a Klegg:

Need to add some detailing to the shoulder armour, maybe something on the sleeve too, the Kleggs as drawm by Bolland were pretty clean and basic like these guys, then McMahon's versions were a bit more techy which I'm aiming for.
Also thinking about a Judge Grampus, might be a fun little thing.

And of course, the klegghounds:

Well, first I need to lose the tail as klegghounds don't have tails. At least, not in any of the stories I've just been re-reading. Was thinking of other options too (another time to wish I still had all my lizardman minis), I quite like the body I used for the squighound - I think I have one more somewhere. IIRC it's an old slaan warhound, so I'm pretty much stuck with just the one I have if I go that route - not going to be that easy to pick one up. I'll have to check out some more options before making a decision on the hounds I think.

And a bit of terrain:

It was some sort of dessert container - something lemony I think, but can't recall just what at the moment, been saving it for years, never quite found a 40k use for it, but odd shapes abound in the mega-cities.

Oh yeah, and started off another chaos dude:

Used to be one of my gene-marines - a squad of 'hybrid marines' (ie, old RTB01 marines with a 'nid place just glued in place of a head or arm ) that were led by the very old Marneus Calgar on throne figure, except I'd replaced his head with that of a genestealer. Most were broken up completely - I think this guy's head was too firmly superglued to come off when they originally got purged.
Give him an old ork arm and a set of tracks, he's good to go again - I'm hoping his backpack will be a bit interesting - just changed my mind with where I was going with it and am awaiting the results.
