So last night I started to fiddle around with cork to create a rock shelf for one of the wolves to stand on. I cut a rough shape then cut it to fit the base. I used the tip of my hobby knife to dig away at the edge to create a more random shape. I initially used the blade and made cuts but the edges were too linear and looked wrong. I also dug out the top of the cork to create a few depressions in the stone rather than just a flat surface.

On the back I cut the cork to the shape of the base rather than have it overhanging.

Great work on those wolves, and with Unbound, you could legitimately (and thematically) use them as the Ogres' pets.

I'm using the same models as "red goblin wolf rider" proxies for my KoW Ogre Army. They seem to me just like the kinds of pets that Ogres/Ogryns would keep.

Small update

I received my 2 boxes of Fenrisian wolves and set about assembling them.

I have also assembled all of the Thunderwolves.

I've searched gravel at work and around where I live to gather pieces of slate to use on their bases. In addition I'm using the GW small slate that comes in the basing kit tubs. Bellygrub has kindly donated materials for this project and using the cork he provided I cut circles of it to use on the bases. I wanted a more complete look on some of them so I will be able to draw where I want to cut and dig out to make the edges etc.

I'll also be doing some simple head and weapon swaps using the existing Space Wolf heads from the Long Fangs and Grey Hunters. I picked up what I needed off of Ebay. Of course because it is Games Workshop the Thunderwold rider heads are flat on the bottom while the Grey Hunter and Long Fang heads have the usual round bottoms. I am simply going to use space space marine torsos as a solution.

I loved the idea of giving the riders lances and the Grey Knight halberds were perfect for this. I will also be using the Grey Knight swords as my frost swords on my Pack Leaders. And once again Bellgrub was kind enough to donate them.

I am also going to have a couple of the Pack leaders with power fists so I was able to bit out 2 of the pointing power fists. One is from the Chaos Marines and I like the claw look of the fingers. I simply removed the chaos icons with an xacto knife.

I was able to find a nice piece of flat slate and it was perfect for the leaping wolf.

So tonight I decided to work on my Warlord's Thunderwolf mount. I wanted him on a white wolf and I found a tutorial that achieved the look I was going for. Here's the tutorial if anyone cares to check it out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwUsSCwfnOc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Here was the result of following the video with some slight modifications.

Although I liked the color of the wolf I wasn't happy with the muzzle or the face. the colors too closely matched the rest of the model for my tastes. So looking through my paints I had a tub of Space Wolves grey and decided to give it a try to lighten the face and create some distinction. I also wanted the fur a bit lighter so I went back over and used white sparingly on the tips of the fur. Here were the results.

I like this look a lot better. The face is a bit more dynamic. I changed a bit of his formula and added white as a final highlight on the bottom fur on the wolf's body and tail.

Lastly, here is the first wash of watered down Sepia on the remaining 10 Fenrisian Wolves..

more to come...

Painted 3 more wolves. This time I used this tutorial I found on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsyJHBSuIDg

I'm not sold on the faces yet. they may still get redone.

I think they look good. When I did my own wolves, I did the bodies using one technique, and then went in with the detail brush and a large printed photo of a wolf face to do the actual markings - even beyond where the "fur" texture finishes on the GW models. Unfortunately, doing so makes you really see how unlike wolves those GW heads are, but I felt I was still able to get a decent approximation onto them.

Thanks for the comments and compliments. Bellygrub and I had a paint day over my house while watching Casablanca and Zulu! An excellent day of painting!
@Azazelx awesome job on the Fenrisian Wolves. The grey looks really good.

On the topic of the Thunderwolf faces I wasn't happy with them and after discussing ideas with Bellygrub and looking at photos I decided to change them. Along with that I painted 4 additional wolves bringing the total to 7. I still need to do the saddle strap, bionics, claws, teeth, and tongues but the fur is complete. Here were the results..

So I've decided to paint all the wolves the same color with the exception of my leaders wolves. And tonight I was able to get all the remaining wolves primed including saddles which I will paint separately and attach.

Tonight I got the base colors down on my 2nd Grey Wolf for Harald. I added a few highlights to the top fur as well later.

The 3rd grey wolf will be done in the colors of the GW tutorial in White Dwarf issue 387. In this tutorial they used Karak stone as a highlight. I am interested in seeing how this turns out. This wolf will be for my Battle Leader and although it is a seasoned Thunderwolf it is younger than Haralds or the Warlord's but older than the rank and file troop mounts.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting that pic of the primer you use. I have heard that one of the automotive primers was the best stuff but that you had to make sure you got the right one or else. So, even though I was curious, I never knew which one was the right one so I didn't chance it. I picked up a can today and based a unit of Black Orcs for my fantasy army. That stuff was amazing to apply. I hope it takes paint as well as it went on. If so I will be going back and getting a can of white as well. Thank you again!!

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

You're very welcome! I'm glad to help. The primer takes the paint really really well too. It's literally made to take paint unlike some of these companies pawning off spray as "primer" and the beauty of the Duplicolor is it isnt thick and doesn't fill in the detail. It covers smoothly, evenly.

I completed the fur on the last 8 Thunderwolves. So that's 18 wolves completed. Now for the detail bits.

I also finished a side project between fur coats. I stained and added felt to a dice tower my dad and I made together. It'll be making the trip to the convention in November.

And lastly, I am toying with the idea of using viking shields in place of the shields that come on the sprue but I'm not sure. I kind of like being able to add the viking decals and they are pretty close in size. What do you think?

With his mount complete, I went about assembling my version of Harald Deathwolf. I plan to sling a shield over his back or possibly have it attached to his saddle.

I'm thinking of scrapping the viking shield idea. The shields themselves are very flat looking and not as visually appealing as the shields that come in the kit. Good suggestion though!

I have done all the trim on the Knights armor plates with the exception of the weapons. I have also added accent colors on the skeletons and will be ready to wash them. Since I'm taking this army to the convention I want to get it finished. It's only 38 models, 20 of which are Fenrisian Wolves. Once complete I will be finishing the Knights. Then I'll get back to finishing the Ogryns.

Small update.

I completed the mind numbing task of basing all the Thunderwolves, inking or painting the bases black, and then completing the first color of Vallejo Model Air Light Grey. This color is really nice. It goes on light but drys a darker color. I'm guessing it's due to the black base color underneath but it looks great when dry.

Next up each base will receive Vallejo Model Air Dark Earth on the edges of the base, under and around the stones etc.

Thanks for taking the time to look through my post. I'm terribly scatter brained when it comes to miniatures. It's a sickness. I love finding tutorials that offer ideas that I would have never thought about myself. I try to post as many pictures as I can so that a specific technique is better explained. Good luck with the washes. Don't forget you can turn any paint into a wash using the GW medium so you aren't limited by the washes they sell. I'll post an example of this when I get home tonight to show you what mean.
