So I had my son last night, i already have a 3 year old daughter and she likes the "backpack toys" (assault marines)
so im working on getting her a Blood angels army started. and im wondering what i should start collecting for my son
hopefully by the time they are both 10 years old i will have stocked enough crap for them to have impressive armies
Just wondering what you think? and hey even if they dont wanna play 40k they can just sell the stuff off and spend it
on the xbox 4 or whatever is out at the time but anyway what army should the little boy get.

In ten years the game can (and almost certainly will, compare what the game and setting is in 2015 and what it was in 2005, and 2005 to 1995) change an awful lot in pretty much every way there is to change and pretty much every army (unless you're the sisters of battle lel) is going to have a large number of new models and likely substantially different overall gameplay than what it has now.
So I wouldn't pick any army based on gameplay or anything else that is going to alter itself in ten years. Rather, go for what you think is going to be the aesthetic and thematic your child will enjoy most. Of course, it's rather hard to ask a newborn what army he thinks is coolest or even guess.
I'd probably wait until they were a little older and show them the various armies and show which one they respond to best and go from there.

That was my thought, my daughter actually picked her not based on anything i had. I was barrowing a buddies grey knights to try them out against a buddy awhile back and he was playing just smurf marines but had a unit of assault mariens and selene kept taking them off the damn table and when i asked her why she said, i like the back pack toys lol. Luckily she knows enough about daddies toys to know to be gentle and the guy was a good family friend so he wasnt too upset about his models being snatched up. But yeah that was my thought (as far as going with the rule of cool not necessarily what is winning) i was considering grey knights, crons, or eldar for him just cause those are the ones i think are coolest.

Footbal (soccer) ball can save you a bit. So do boxing gloves.
If you really have to, csm ofc.

If you really have to, csm ofc. lol already have a personal gym at home with all the aformentioned sports equipment and weight bench and what not. Just thinking it would be good bonding time for both kids to sit down and assemble and paint with dad. Kids love to be included. And to top it off, when they have disputes just whip out the 40k table and let the dice settle it lol. "DAAAAAAAAAD JULIUS DOESNT WANNA SHARE THE ..........................."

Well tbh I wanted to avoid showing nerdy stuff to my kids for as long as possible but lately I changed my mind, mainly because motor bikes seem to be the most popular 12 - 15 year olds hobby around and Id like to avoid that. And yes I want my own mechwarrior online family clan, wife already signed in - required severe pressure and blackmail ofc but who cares, eggs omlet etc.
40k I agree has a potential to be a great shared hobby but I dont want them assembling until 15 at least, I managed to cut my wrist artery with a modeling knife so am bit chicken in that regard, also the danger is quite underestimated because toys man dollies etc. It's actualy very accident prone.

Vanilla codex marines weather the years very well. You might need to grab a unit or two of the latest things, but can still use the backbone of your army. They may be mid-tier, but they are stable there.

congrats on the child but really I would wait until they are at least at the age to read.
I started when I was 8, im now 24 have had breaks in between.
good idea to start them off when they are young, actually who am I to say no do it.
my little bros collect tau and orks/chaos now, they enjoy the game, but in reality they rather spend £40 on FIFA or COD

Congrats on having a son. Kids show an interest in what their parents like because we're all programmed that way when we're born. But that doesn't necessarily mean that when they grow older, it's what they'll still be interested in. For now, just give them some ugly, snap-fit minis, a couple frayed brushes, and a few globs of bright paint on a plate, and let them slop some on the fig. They'll get way more enjoyment out of that than trying to explain abstract rules on a tabletop.

For now? Nothing. There is no way to tell what army he is going to like in the future, or whether he will even be interested in miniatures. Wait until he is at least 6 to start collecting stuff for him.
However, when in doubt, go IG. I've never met a boy who does not like toy soldiers and tanks, and IG are the most soldier-like and versatile.
