I would suggest greenstuff for flames. Cotton wool can be used quite nicely for smoke, but I've never managed to get it looking good myself.

Started putting the colours down, and discovered I can no longer focus properly at small, close objects This could be fun
Time to check when I can get my next free glasses - working in optics has some benefits.

I think I'm pretty much done, it's been awhile since I've put paint to plastic, but I'm happy with them for now I'm really happy to actually finish a project, life has been crazy this last couple of years...

New to the hobby, but I'm going to give this contest a try anyway. If nothing else, it's an excuse to force me to get some work done.

I already started with Space Marines as my first army, so I'm in business. I have a whole heap of plastic staring at me so I have options to choose from.

I have some ideas for it, including a unit of suppressors or one of eliminators.

Likely, though, I will focus on this Terminator Sergeant.

Can I post several pics of plastic chunks as my proof pics and then decide later depending on how inspired I get this week?

Welcome DJJazzyJeff and welcome back monkeytroll!

Some nice progress and completions showing up. I can only add to the former and hope for the latter - but I am finally done with the "bone"!

Good luck everyone!

Rather ambitiously, I'm going to try to paint this big blue feller this month. He's like the king of the space marines isn't he?

Can I be the first to request an extension from Para now?

The League table is complete (2 small mistakes I've noticed, positions for me and Bell are wrong way around and missed blanking previous challenges for the new joiners on this challenge but not enough of a mistake to redo it)

First two are ready for their second black coat. Then highlights, edgeing, guns, chapter pads...

And then I start on the other two.

Armour is coming along nicely, highlights next. Guess I'm going to have to tackle those two pairs of eyes soon too.

All looking good people!

Ordered some extra lamps to sit behind me when painting - extra light can't hurt whilst I wait for eye-tests and new specs...

In the mean-time the plan will be to use multiple washes to try and cover the mess made at attempting layering, and then edge highlighting which I'm hoping might not be too bad. The final result won't be my best work, but then it wouldn't have been anyway with the time spent since last picking up brushes in seriousness.

Well, I'm making some kind of progress. I didn't manage to paint as much as I'd wanted to this weekend, but maybe I'll find some time while I'm working from home while "social distancing."

Quick WIP from me

Blacks, greys, stonework, and all beige tones completed! Now to do the tiny bit of green and then the metals.

Picked up a new phone this weekend, the Galaxy S20 and by the Emperor this camera leaves no detail untouched. My painting is going to need to be flawless if I'm going to be using this.

Trying to introduce some measure of directional lighting from slightly front and above, but not sure how well I'm pulling it off. I like the transition on his cloak's trim (that's layers, not natural shadow) but I'm not sure I'm pulling it off anywhere else. Any advice where I could be improving?

Progress on my Templars! Plasma gunner is nearing completion, with his chainsword brother lagging behind slightly, but I think I'm making decent progress.

Some very cool stuff in this thread! Remember battle brothers, only in death does our duty (to paint little plastic spacemen) end!

Awesome entries this month, y'all! Now that a new year is underway, I don't want to miss, but I've got the LoER terrain contest project crowding my time. So, I'm going to sneak in a simple one and keep it quick: 5 Tactical Marines from what... late 90s? Early 2000s? They're on 25mm bases, so they're pretty old, and I've got a giant box of them waiting to turn into a Battalion (or more) of White Scars. My main goal with these is speed (given that the month is halfway gone), but contrast paint should help with that. Also, I just bought some of that waterslide softener stuff, so there's a little hobby ambition to tack onto the entry. Here they are, in need of backpacks, guns, random shoulder pads... basically everything. Two weeks, here we go!

DJJazzyJeff: Supressors or Eliminators, can't go wrong either way! Your pile of plastic looks a lot like mine...

Arakasi: I've painted a whole brigade of Battle Sisters in bone armor, so I know what you're up against, and that armor looks fabulous!

Nevelon: That black is developing nicely. It's all contrast? It blends really nicely with the other colors you've put down. I wonder if Apothecary White would let me drop other colors first?

Great job, everyone!

Have been working on those eyes last couple of days, what do you think? Passable? I'm pretty happy with the space wolf but the Ultramarines eyes are pretty hard to reach behind that chainsword, they do look straight if a bit large, I blame the space crack.

Those eyes on your models look pretty good, even on the Ultramarine IMHO.

Cheers shadowsanddust, I think it's just the difference in pupil size between them that puts me off, either version would be fine on its own but together you can tell something isn't right.

Almost finished the armour for the imperial fist just needs a spot highlight, looks a bit rough up close but fine at arms length.

This month I'll be painting this one lucky primaris marine. I've tried to come up with a paint scheme for quite some time, but I've struggled with finding one I like.

Now is the time to decide one.

Just a very thin coat of the normal base Abadon black over white primer. The only contrast paints I used on these guys is some darkoath flesh that I’m using instead of my old chestnut ink these days. That goes down over all the golds, leather, and parchment.

I’ll be experimenting with apothecary white on my phobos marines. And SoB. Initial trials on the zoat were promising.

Edit:

Guy on the right got his second pass with the black.
Two thin coats might get a lot of meme-time, but it’s solid advice. It’s how I do my marine power armor, both DW and Ultras, and a lot of other stuff.
