OH-I Wanna get out of here

Here's some pics of said Dred. Still very WIP so keep that in mind. Already added a view port the the front. Not sure I can live up to the stormboyz though.

Arakasi,

I want to apologize in advance for imbuing your fierce Bug Boy Nob with a bit of humor... I just couldn't help it. As usual, I had a bit of unplanned, serendipitous inspiration while working on the boss pole that has transformed your ork from a neat project into my favorite ork of all time. It's not silly or demeaning... it's just... funny, in that quirky way orks were funny back in the RT days when I started playing 40k. I hope you will forgive this conceit, but a humorless ork is antithetical to my green-skin world view. The sad thing is if I tried this on any of my orks... it would look dumb and out of place... on your's though... it's perfect.

Here are the final build shots... first a large shot of figure next to marine for size comparison.

Next a close up of the boss pole / bionik ear / radio antenna. It's a 3-stage retractable car antenna complete with antenna ball & direct feed into the orks head-gear! Think I'll make the ball look like the Jack-in-the-Box dude.

Enjoy!

My only concern is if the wings were in motion, these perspectives make it hard to judge!

@ChrisCP: Well, the wings aren't actually supposed to work enough to get him up in the air (Arakasi requested no jump pack)... they're just supposed to give the illusion of flying to add to his ferocity (or so he thinks). I imagine they "flap" more so than any type of spinning that might be interfered with by the antennae... besides, it's retractable right? :-)

@Artsoldier35: I thought you would be. There's no point until I get my glue (2 weeks now, is there a shortage in the UK? Or have I been spoilt by my last two Wayland orders being as advertised?)

@Gitsplitta: He is looking really good! The humor either went over my head or just fits my view of Orks - I came in at the start of 2nd edition (well, the first time...) Da Dark Angelz do tend to lean towards a more serious, grimdark side (in keeping with Dark Angels ) - but they are still Orks! The Stormboyz Nobz in particular are meant to be serious, and more importantly, static poses. The landing and violence are in the past, and left to the imagination - you only see the aftermath. The quick draw of the pistol, in reaction to a noise or movement, drawing the Nobz attention away from his "kill", is also in the past. We are left in the still moment before he decides to shoot and charge, or soar back up into the heavens. The only "humor" - potentially - is the size of the Rokkit pack required to lift his bulk!

The wingz make good "counts as" 'eavy armour too methinks

@ChrisCP: Are they?

Cool Arakasi... we're good.

I keep in mind that the point of this exercise is NOT that I make you a Dark Angel, but that I make you a Bad Moon Bug Boy to run with your Dark Angelz... and visa versa. So the fact that both will stand out in comparison to their units is not only good, but kind of the whole point... isn't it?

Absolutely! The only thing they should have in common is being Orky and awesome

You have really been working on this for a long time... And it looks really cool... But I still prefer the name Da Ork Angelz...

@Artsoldier35: Thanks again - but I know you are just itching for your turn

@Saintspirit: Thanks! You're not the only one, but I prefer it this way, so its not changing. Sorry

Another Rokkit pack and first marine corpse done in DA Green. Its added to my painting load, but not detracting at this point. I think its because its still new and interesting and I haven't done enough to screw it up yet As the Stormboyz Nobz don't need to be minimally ready for a tournament or game, I think I'll stick to doing a section at a time this go around, from the inside out.

That's it for this week. Doesn't feel overly productive, but progress has been made, which is better than nothing...

I know, I know, you are all just waiting for the next modelling project I seem to have lost the paint brigade somewhere along the line...

I love the plasticard dark angels symbol on the dread! The arms look a bit awkward though, honestly.

I wanted them to be effing huge, and therefore orkish. Keep in mind this is the only ork thing I've ever done outside of a few boys and it is still very wip. Anything you can point out specifically that would help?

Started the process of painting Arakasi's bug boy tonight. It's not much to look at... but as soon as I get it looking like something I'll post a pic.

@Darth Bob, whalemusic360: I think I have worked out what the problem is with the arms - the lines are too clean! I imagine you are going to put some rivets on the gun plates, but you could probably do with adding more liberally to the weapons. Also (and I don't know how well the type of plastic used will hold up to this) - you may want to take a hobby knife and cut some of those round edges so that they can be painted scratched and chipped.

@Gitsplitta: Pretty much same

Meh.... obviously my idea of humor in singular... and possibly not actually funny.

The idea of a big, bad ork nob with a boss pole that can raise or lower like an electric antenna on an old Cadillac I find amusing. That's all.

OH, I get it now. It is pretty funny. I thought it looked right at home there. Ya know, bugs....Antennae.....

BTW, congrats on making a figure where that head looks good.

Does that mean it will raise and lower still once painted? I had assumed not...

@HA: Thanks. It really was the only choice. I was trying to find a head that looked vaguely marine-like since there was no way a beakie helmet would fit on an ork, even as a hat (I did think about that). That head configuration is very like many of the non-helmetted commanders you see for SMs, so it was a clear choice.

@Arakasi: Unfortunately no, while I could get the 3 sections to slide inside one another, there was no way to put "stops" into them to keep them from sliding all the way out, so they are indeed glued in place.

Yup, way to smooth. I've hacked and drilled the body and CCW arm, waiting to do the Gun arm until I get the care package.

First time a dread has ever been called "smooth" btw.

I'd have to check - but boyz headz, sluggas and choppas come to mind - ie pretty much what every Ork player has too many of (Happy to trade slugga/choppas for shootas...)

Nope. Well, technically yes, but none "spare" - just currently unused...

So - small update for HadoukenAvenger... (apologies - no pics)

Painting continues... The Stormboyz Nobz are in three parts for painting. The DA green on the SM corpses and Rokkit Packs has been base coated, as well as the Orchide Shade on the Nob skin. Being unhappy with the skin on my Big Mek, I had the motivation (and spare paint) to redo him as well. All green areas have been shaded with Badab Black, pending the start of highlighting tomorrow... The Big Mek's Boss Pole was fixed from its accident at Silver Sorcerer - yay, my new glue arrived!

Meanwhile, Artsoldier35 and I finally negotiated our Great Marine Swap - One Da Dark Angelz Trukk for one insane Nob Biker/Wazdakka and one awesome Trike. Requirements are Big Shoota, Reinforced Ram, Deffwing paintjob with green trim and Da Dark Angelz trademark "I can't believe its not moving" ramshackle look. Everything/anything else is a bonus.

As I do with most of these type of projects - my first stop was Google for inspirational pictures - in this case for both body style and "I can't believe its not moving" positioning. Next is to start playing around with components to get a feel for what might work. Luckily, I have a fourth unmade Trukk. Unluckily, I don't have a fifth - so I will need to rectify that so that I can actually part with one of my babies when they are done...

Ideas are forming. The insanity is about to begin again Artsoldier35 has assured me he is patient! Stay tuned for more exciting episodes...

Oh - and now I have my glue I can "technically" start on my Looted Wagon too... Good thing I promise to paint each night first!

Arakasi
