I seriously don't know where people keep getting Harem from in SAO- unless something's changed massively in Season 2, the only 'harem'-like things are the main character having people crush on him. He's freaking
Spoiler:
married
after all!

Its in there, Anvildude, it really is. It isn't a major theme, it's barely apparent enough to be a minor theme. But I think that's kind of the core concept to a Harem isn't it, multiple cast members crushing on the main character? It's there, but fairly subtle and pretty easy to dismiss. If you want flaws, I'd cite the plot slip in the second half of the first season, even though there were some cool parts.

And he's

Spoiler:
married in a video game.
And while they probably take that seriously, the other characters (and viewers) likely will not. You can even see it one of the last season1 episodes, 2 of the girls that liked him were giving him and Asuna time, then they were going to go after him. It didn't happen, haven't watched season 2 to know if it does, but the ghost of such a thing exists in the show.

Totally like the show though, wish I had time to see some more of what people have been talking about so I could better contribute to discussion but what is, is.

So I figured Locodol was gonna be the only comedy anime for me this season, but then I watched the first episode of INVADERS of the ROKUJYOMA!?, which is ready to tackle life's Ultimate Question:

Spoiler:
Is a 50 dollar a month apartment worth dealing with every anime cliche fighting for control of that apartment?

These are the serious questions we must face, people.

Spoiler:
And the landlady made them sign a freakin' treaty on the Conduct of their war! The apartment has a Hague Convention!

Give them a try.

Its flaws are that the CGI is bad and too prevalent than it should be (But the scenes that are hand-drawn are still gorgeous). The movies generally feel rushed, and IIRC this is mostly evident in the second film, which also had the most subplots and the like cut out. A lot of stuff that isn't shown is implied, such as Griffith's liaison with that fat old man for some extra cash, so if you've read the manga you should be able to fill in the blanks.

Overall though, the feel and tone of the films as well as the characters are textbook Berserk, so they're still quite enjoyable. Give them a try.

You know, it's not quite schadenfreude, but there needs to be a word for enjoying inflicting emotional pain on others that you yourself have had to endure.

In personal news, still watching Those Who Hunt Elves, and I'm about to start Read Or Die.

I mean, they haven't gotten too deep into anything, other than

Spoiler:
If you use the powers given to the person you locked in the mech, you start using up their soul until they cease to exist, and oh hey, Demons are the same way, and oh hey, two of the main characters are locked in a mech and a Demon. I have started and seen most of Paranoia Agent and let me tell ya, this is some good ol' "WTF" material. 2 episodes in special so far just kept making me go "WTF is going on?!". Don't get me wrong, I totally understand now why everyone says good about this, because it IS awesome, but yeah, I missed going "WTF?!".

P.S: Went to my first 2nd hand store yesterday and I'm talking about a somewhat small city. Found around 11 or more Reis figurines under 10€ I didn't have. Or in some cases, 5€.

This place is fething paradise

Seriously? I've never had any issues with it at all, and it tends to be higher quality and faster streaming than pirate sites.

Anywhoo- on anime- I'm actually really enjoying Fate:Zero right now. Though for the life of me I can't understand why they made Aleksander the Great, arguably one of the most historically bishounen conquerers ever- into a 7 foot tall red-haired, boistrous bearded giant. And then go an make Gilgamesh all bishounen instead.

And why is Arthur female? There's literally no plot-based reason for that, except for making Gilles mistake her for Joan. There's nothing that demands her to be, well, a her. It's bizarre.

With how much of a fuss they were making over people dying if they used their powers, one of the characters becoming human and the other being taken out of the mech was rather disappointing. Must be Knights of Sidonia. The animation at the begining is very rough, but whoever was working on it got the hang of it and by the end it's stunning.

The universe and plot are damn good. Keep watching, you won't regret it! I know people who gave up after ep1 because they couldn't stand the animation.

Well people, today I finally reached Tokyo and because I'm the nerd ya know, I was burning with curiosity and my first stop was Akihabara. I am going to give my impression as calm and collected as I can:

"Holy gak! Holy gak!! I've died and gone to heaven! And if this isn't heaven I now know I must keep taking care of myself so I can live longer and visit it more often!! Holy gak!!"

Seriously, anyone who's an anime fan has to make a visit at least once... Collectible stores with 8 floors, hobby stores, 6F arcades, computer stuff everywhere, hell! Got myself some sweet eva 00 headphones and funny enough, first store I enter I find 2 of my favorite ero-doujins. YOINK, mine!

But so far it was mostly how he is starting to get the hang of his new ghoul-life while facing the many dangers associated with it. Some ghouls are way crazier than others.

Ya I agree with you on this, I prefer more of a cast of main characters that are all interesting. Not to be confused with the common theme where the main character is a bland blank slate like some Visual Novel dating sim

haha ya exactly, I always hated that in the pokemon games to. But if it's a video game and the character is literally that blank of a slate, like where you are supposed to be that character, I don't mind it. That makes sense since it allows you to fill in the blanks and say whatever you want, since it's supposed to be you. In an anime it's annoying because I'm not role playing as the main character

Yeah why is this? IS IT

1) TMC is meant to be fantasy projection fodder?
2) They don''t want you to risk not liking TMC (and make him norm-core) - but if you have like a whole other caste then you will probs like at least one of them??
3) Other reasons a silly gaijin will not understand?

Also, yes the romance gak right at the end, complete with a "What about my star" moment from Kanade and Misao REALLY got on my plums

I mean, it was like being on a 5 star Roller Coaster, complete with emotional ups and downs..... and right before you get back into the station, you realize the track is out two feet in front of the end of the ride :/

Actually, I just ate a bunch of peanuts (Which I'm allergic to) and started coughing up blood (Which is my reaction. It's not as serious as it sounds, don't worry) so

It did take a while to get into it, but it was relatively rewarding for doing so (Of the non-Trigun/Fullmetal animes I've seen, this one definitely had some of the best characterization I've ever seen.) I especially love/hate the Shur/Tomoharu scene right off the bat; "Give me your hand" *Places his hand on her breast* "This world was destroyed once". Because those two things totally have anything in common with eachother

Well that really depends. It can be for any number of reasons depending on the case, I was just complaining about the situations where it doesn't fit or feels out of place

Well, with aldnoah.zero being around and me having started Gundam Unicorn yesterday it's just become so obvious how bad of a mecha series it is.

I think I may have watched a little too much anime today. I was just sitting here watching Ao Haru Ride yelling at the TV "Oh feth off! You know he's getting off that train! Don't you try and increase the dramatic tension with trick shots you !"

That feel when shojo anime raises your blood pressure more then shonen/seinen anime.

Shojo (girl/girls) = Girl's anime (Blue Spring Ride, Inuyasha, anime targeted towards girls and young women, beware, here there be monsters. and drama, so much drama)
Shonen (boy/boys) = Boy's anime or anime targeted towards the same, Gurren Lagen, Naruto, One Piece, Shaman King, Detective Conan, Coffin Princess Chaika, etc
Seinen (young man/young men) = is anime/manga targeted at the 17-40 year old male market, so obviously it covers more mature themes and meanings, many classic anime are part of this genre such as Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Chobits, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Planetes, Elfen Lied, Hellsing, etc, etc ad nauseum. This is also where you start to see your heavy duty fan service and outright sexual situations, though outright porn is of course it's own category.
Josei (lit: comics for women) = Is the female equivalent to Seinen, it has a similar wide net and includes things like Paradise Kiss, Honey and Clover, Angel Nest and Usagi Drop
Kodomo (Children's comics) = What it says on the tin. see Hello Kitty and Poke'mon for some of the bigger examples.

Now it is worth noting there's a fair amount of drift. Just because X is targeted for Y doesn't mean W won't enjoy it. The all ages popularity of say Buffy or Charmed in the U.S. as an example even though the shows were targeted for teens and adults. Or how some adults like things like Lucky Star, or My Little Pony, or even Hello Kitty despite the difference in target age group. Classification usually depends on how or where an anime/manga is first aired or published. For a field guide for those of us running around, romance dramas are most likely shojo, more serious dramas might be Josei, especially if the focus is still from a traditionally feminine perspective, especially with a focus on relationships. Not sure if your favorite scifi gun battle is shonen or seinen? Easy way to check is to examine the themes, if it's hot blooded badassery all the time, chances are you're watching shonen anime, if it's more serious/realistic in it's approach to it's subject material (ex: Ghost in the Shell's investigation into the little matter of the HUMAN SOUL) or the tone is just darker in general, it's probable seinen. So G Gundam is Shonen, 8th MS Team is Seinen.

Fairy Tail was.... bleh. The character powers were cool (Even if half of them are a stretch to be considered "Magic") but it's very much a "Unstoppable Bad Guy runs into the Only Good Guy Who Can Stop Him" type anime. At least Bleach/One Piece/Naruto have actual character development when the main character loses a fight, but with Natsu (As much of a badass as he is) it's basically:

"Let's Fight!"
*Natsu Loses, next episode he gets back up*
"ROUND TWO, MOFO!"
*Natsu Wins by landslide*

You know what I find funny; why do people never recommend Dragon Ball Z in top 10/25 lists of anime you should watch? I understand that it's popular enough that most people have already seen it, but then the same lists include Cowboy Beebop and Full Metal Alchemist.....

Ok, guys, I don't want to read anything other than positive replies or I'll find you and slap you : Not only is this car a symbol of a generation of gamers that played Sega Rally Championship either on the arcades or for the Sega Saturn, everyone here seems to be a fan of the girls:

Spoiler:

As I walking down the street carrying a gak-ton of bags, I noticed the car. I almost dropped everything then. When I noticed who the girls were, I dropped them as I was desperate to reach for the camera in time before the owner would leave or something

And you can see the "Grandpa-bunny" from last season's "Is your order a rabbit?" inside on top of the car's tablier.

So, Girls und Panzer... that's an interesting show, I'm on episode 10 now - yet another all-powerful student council, and schoolkids going to war - looks like a common trope in anime!

I'm enjoying the tank battles, but I tend to skip the crew bonding inbetween. Also, I really want a StuG !

Oh that latest one, the filler episode? Ya it was at least funny, and I wouldn't have minded the episode at all if I were watching the season all at once instead of week by week.

Spoiler:
I have to say I'm not so sure how I feel about the main villain and his motives this season. He's definitely really bad ass, and in the begging of the season his motives were clear and his actions made a lot of sense. Now this actions seem really odd and I don't fully understand what he is planning to do. The role of the villain/antagonist is always important to me.

The goofy thing about the General Quarters scene is the Marines running through the room with the anchor chains, there's not really anything forward, aft or to the sides of that room for them to be going to or towards.

On an American naval ship, a Marine security detail like that's battlestations are guarding the bridge, CIC, the magazine with the ship's nuclear weapons (if any are aboard) or supplementing the look outs and damage control teams. All of that is well aft of that room (and that room would be well forward of their berthings)

So this week's Sailor Moon was awesome~ It's easy to get excited when a new Sailor Scout is showing up, but the Crystal team has proven their chops doing a non "HEY! Look who it is! Episode". Aldnoah Zero was excellent this week, though it left me a bit confused. Lots going on there.

Ok so that attack on titan mix was incredible, like the song was made to be used in such a way. Kind of unusual pacing for a song otherwise.

Also, Gurren Lagen looks kind of awesome now, is it as awesome as the video makes it look, cause it looks pretty awesome?

FLCL - I didnt even realise that the girl was burning things down because she was weirdly trying to envoke the main kids older brother to come back from baseball camp.

Gurren Lagann is honestly 100x more awesomer than the AMV. It's kind of braindead though. If you've seen Kill La Kill, you know what to expect from Gurren Lagann, though not quite as crazy.

So I've figured out why Kamina is such a favorite character, despite most bombastic characters like him are so hated;

Spoiler:
It all has to do with the first two episodes, in them we see Kamina being Kamina, but we also see him A) Protective of Simon, B) Break down at the sight of a dead guy, C) bawl his eyes out when he finds out that dead guy is his father. It gives him less of a "I have to be tough so people respect me!" type of vibe, but more of a "I have to be tough because I need to be tough." type of vibe. He's only so confident for two people; himself and Simon (And Yoko as the series goes on), not for the audience, and not for anyone else.

Edit: Also, if you still don't know if you should watch Gurren Lagann, let me put it to you this way.

Before I watched Gurren Lagann, I chased girls.

After I watched Gurren Lagann, girls chased me.

It's that good of a show, that even the viewer becomes more manly.

Do yourself a favor and watch it. GL is one of the Anime Gods!

Well, I have finished Paranoia Agent and holy crap, it has been too long since I finished watching an anime and I remained confused with what the heck happened. So much weird stuff happens but the thing is, it's all delicious and intriguing. I really understand where all the praise for this anime comes from. If you are in the mood for some "WTF?!" and an intriguing story, be sure to watch it.

And since the trip was long, I started watching "GOSICK". Right now, I have no idea what the major plot will be, but overall, it's about a duo solving crimes. Not bad, but not excellent so far, but the ED's music is one of the best I have heard in an anime.

Whelp, if this doesn't convince GrimDork to watch Gurren Lagann, I think nothing will.

It didn't have any life changing effects on me, I just consider it one of the best animes ever made. Every single character is fantastic. Kamina, who like Slarg said, should be hated because it's one of those very pain in the ass type of characters that make people *groan*, is nothing but loved and regarded as a true manly hero.

Hell, what other character looks like Kamina? I can't remember any easily. He was so ... unique.

I just find it so funny that a show with the plot literally being "Whats the next thing in the way? LET'S GO BLOW THAT MOFO UP!" and as bare bones as it is....

It has some of the best characterization in anime. You even see the secondary/third rate characters grow a bit by the end.

There really aren't "extras" in that anime. Everyone has a mission and a purporse, everyone grows, everyone is awesome. Damn it, I kinda want to be able to watch it all over again as if it was the first time again. Same with KLK.

Those shows were such a roller-coaster ride of awesome.

So. The Season 3 Finale to Legend of Korra.

I am, quite literally, reeling. Like, wow.

Spoiler:
I don't think Korra's going to recover from that. I mean, mercury poisoning? That stuff was in there for minutes. Tens of minutes! She may not be fully paralyzed, but if she's not back up and going in 2 weeks (of assumed intense medical treatment from Katara and Kaia, two of the best healers on the planet), I don't think she's ever going to actually recover. The Avatar is a husk, now. How the heck is Season 4 going to go? Or is this the end of Korra's Legend? Is Season 4 actually going to be the first season of a 3rd series? The story of the next Avatar, in a world where people can talk directly to Spirits, and the Airbenders are traveling the world as peacekeepers and moderators, where the Avatar is, quite literally, outdated and obsolete?

I seriously don't understand how Nick doesn't see the potential in this series, and hope the online ratings are reflecting that.

If anyone is up for a brand new series, watch the Terra Formars OVA 1. Besides the OVA, only Manga. It seems to be doing a decent amount of success.

http://anilinkz.com/terra-formars-ova-1

Resuming the plot, Humans needed to colonize Mars to solve the overpopulation problem they knew it was bound to happen, so 500 years ago they started their Terraforming plan (the present is around 2550 or something): This means they sent a special moss and cockroaches. (The manga explains how the heck this works, the OVA doesn't ... )

Problem: The cockroaches ... evolved. Now there's freakin' living nightmares.

Seriously, it's GG if something like this happened. Humanoid cockroaches, God-Emperor, if there's anything Space Marines should be thrown at, it's that.

From what I understand it's because it's the "prologue" to the main show. They are condensing a lot in 2 eps.

Spoiler:
So far in the manga there has been 3 voyages. The "Zero", the ship they found in this first OVA. The first time they had no idea about the roaches (it was the "prototype" that was first released in the magazine to test the waters). This one, the "First", that's going to be the prologue to the anime.

The "second", that's where the anime will start.

I admit, I haven't read the manga in a while so I'm not sure if there's already a 4th one.

After what happened to the Earth Queen, when tenzin said something along the lines of "As long as there is breath in my body I'll keep fighting" I thought oh no Tenzin why did you have to say that. I'm actually surprised at how dark this season was, nick and Avatar have always had a sticky situation with death in a show with war and then they go and kill someone by suffocation on screen. I can't help but feel that was a bit of fan service as air bending is supposedly a non-lethal form of bending but forums talk about its potential to kill by sucking the air out of peoples lungs.

Wait, Matt Bluhm, amirite?

Sorry, if you don't get that you need to listen to The Mike O'Meara Show.

That having been said, I'm not up on anime as much as I should be. Anybody with a Crunchyroll account, what can/should I be watching? I'm kinda limited by that as I can't really risk getting in trouble torrenting other series'.

I'm torn on the subject. I watch all TV with subs if I can, i like to know how things are spelled and sometimes theyre great for quiet scenes, but I like to watch shows and paint which is hard to do with anime in Japanese where there's no choice but to read. In either case, it sucks to switch mid show.

Certain shows I just can't take the characters seriously with their original voice actors (I watch some European shows as well)- but others I prefer the original.

Honestly, it's a tossup based on what I was first introduced to the anime with and the quality of the voice acting.

I can only stand dubs if they are what I saw first. Even then I have a hard time with them. Too bad for the most part

Also Gosick is shaping up into a decent Murder Mystery series. If anyone else is wanting to see it on Crunchy, better get to it! It's going into the "Vaults" on the 30th along with some other shows.

I partially agree with your first statement. I can't watch the dubbed version of an anime if I have already seen the sub. I already associate the characters with the Japanese voices.
I feel like this topic gets brought up every few weeks lol I've already stated my general opinion on the matter several times, although it has changed a bit since I first started watching anime. I used to only be able to watch dubs, but now I really appreciate the sub for a lot of anime. There are some anime better dubbed, and some better subbed. Currently most anime never get translated over to dubbed, so there's way more anime that are better subbed than dubbed, simply by sheer number.

I prefer dubs because then I don't have to watch the screen/text quite so closely and can better watch the actual show or glance down at my food or something, but I usually watch subs simply because those are what come out first.

There are some shows I prefer dubbed some subbed entirely depends on how good the localisation is. I watched cb with both but prefer the dubbed version.

Watched an interesting anime on Netflix the other day, it was about a future where everyone has something called a psychopass and can be arrested or forced into rehabilitation if their potential for crime gets to high according to the computer. Only watched the first two episodes but it seemed interesting.

Dub vs Sub entirely depends on the anime in particular, but above all I NEVER swap in the middle of watching.

I prefer dubbed on FMA because I loathed the voice actor for Alfonse in original japanese.

I don't mind the actor himself, its just that it was a poor match for the character. He's ok in other series.

The actor for Ed also didn't fit. He sounded like a prepubescent boy.

It's being a bit too hard to continue with Gosick... I'm a bit over the half and it has been so boring lately with the random cases. The dude deserves his nick-name, everywhere he goes bodies start piling up.

Maybe I'm just easy to please when it comes to shows....

That plot you mentioned starts to pick up halfway-ish through season two, So if your already having a hard time it could still be a bit of a rocky road to the finish. That said,a few things really start to develop in the second seasons ending.

I like it a lot but as with all things, to each their own.

Yeah, but on the other side

Spoiler:
You saw Balalaika being badass. And when you are living on a tropical island and you ALWAYS wear a Soviet Army's officer coat on top of your business suit... well, that's just badass.

Whelp, saw a bit more of Gosick since I had enormous train ride today. Ok, the Leviathan case was good, I really enjoyed that one and it seems the plot thickened thanks to it.

BUT

Nichijou is turning into such a positive masterpiece of positiveness. Just feel the power of this opening.

Never before have I heard an opening with the lyrics "What time is it?!" / "It's time to yodel!"

And this scene. Oh man, this scene I had to contain myself while on the train. (A bit of an explanation: The blue-haired girl has some very good drawing skills. She draws Yaoi. Not only that, I think she draws the boy she likes in it too. She's ashamed of that and doesn't want anyone to see the drawings)

About 10 episodes from being done with all 8 'seasons' of Naruto available on amazon prime. I like it. I like Naruto's development over time, even though he still stays a knucklehead through out the first series, he does grow quite a bit for the time frame one assumes is covered. The ridiculous backstory frontloading tapers off after a point and the middle of the series after they get rid of a certain annoying "avenger"(good riddance! what an annoying character!) is my favorite. Most of the random/monster of the week once-off episodes or mini-arcs are rather fun.

Gonna have to find something else to watch soon I guess.

Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is pretty balling.

Episode 5 this Youmacon

Still love Hellsing Ultimate though. Freaking BA series.

My guess is that they won't be airing Roberta's OVA series for Black Lagoon as last night the last of the main BL episodes aired. So either their cutting up the OVA into 30 minute segments or they might be cutting Samurai Jack from their lineup, as I think that one is also close to the end of its run. EDIT: Hellsing Ultimate will be taking over for Black Lagoon and uncut Naruto for ten weeks while it airs the full OVAs.

Ah, DBZ:A. I remember watching Dragon Ball Kai as it was airing new episodes and when they showed the Freiza Saga, I just blanked out and remembered this;

When I was a kid watching DBZ, that didn't creep me out at all but now I go back and see this and all I can think how creepy Vegeta was in that moment with that face.

Whelp, with all the train rides managed to finish Gosick. I still think it isn't a "HOLY gak" anime, but some cases were really cool. The Queen Coco's was fantastic.

Spoiler:
But stuff like the "Masquerade" episode were ... urgh. What an horrible episode. Ah well, the scene with Victorique's mother going totally NINJA! on the Marquis' ass was all kinds of good.

Oh and a 1924's nation going all "TO WAR!!!" because of a fictional monster was... lol. Ah yes, the great war of 1924, the horrible WWII. I really wanted them to show WWIII but alas, pity. The "Roaring 20s" was a good war too. */SARCASM*

But ok, the ending was beautiful. They really deserved that end.

Managed to watch all the SOA I was missing, Akame Ga Kill too.

SOA... I love Death Gun. Enough said.

Akame ga kill: I love the "villains". Love them so much

Spoiler:
The entire team is fantastic The cop is a complete nuts FOR JUSTICE (can totally picture her in the mythical "LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWW" scene from Judge Dredd), the masked pyromancer is the nicest guy and married for 6 years, the "angel" kills people with feathers. FEATHERS. The scientist is "LOL", Akame's sister is kinda "meh" and the sea dude is just a poor bastard.

Oh, and Esdeath is just sexy evil. Evil is just so damn sexy.

Just started re-watching the English dub of Shinchan, much to the disgust of most of my friends. For some reason only one other person I know actually likes Shinchan. The rest seem to think of it as slightly less entertaining than having their genitals massaged with a cheese grater. Okay, I know why one of my friends dislike the show: her son loves it and tries to imitate Shin (ass-dance and everything) but why the rest hate it is a mystery.

Anyone else familiar with the show? Anyone else like/loathe it?

Oh yes. It's the weirdest thing with that series. Esdeath and her little team, despite being the villains are way more enjoyable and fun than the heroes. Night Raid has good characters, but the heroes are the most uninteresting part of the series. The child molesting clown (if that villain makes his appearance in the anime) is more interesting, and I feel so dirty saying that I don't watch the anime, but I do read the Manga and it is a breath of fresh air, avoiding most of the really cliche aspects of battle series and constantly keeping me on my toes. I hope the Anime carries to at least the end of the first story arc.

Spoiler:
And don't worry about Kurome. She becomes way more intriguing as the series goes on

I can give you a link to Naruto Shippuden if you like. I think it's quite superior to the original.

Yeah, especially given that most of the original is made up of very poor filler episodes (though the episode where they try to find out what's under Kakashi's mask is pretty funny).

The other mask part was pretty amusing. Where do you get your shippuden Overlord? If he was inventive in the first series, he's even more so there what with using the frogs to subcontract other element types and whatever else he eventually comes up with. I think I'd be a little sad moving on though, sounds like it kinda goes the same way all of those do what with everyone getting ridiculously powerful and such.

I think I remember her being really happy that she was killing Nazis...or was that Alucard? It's been too long.

To be fair though, Nazis are fair game. They are like, fiction's favorite dead horse...That's also a zombie, so it should be flogged even harder.

I know it sounds nitpicky, but does it slightly bother anyone else that she is not Reby? I mean, I get that its due to transliteration but still it's...inconsistent.

Same thing with Lotten...it should really be Rotten.

There's a good article about it here actually;

http://mangastream.com/blog/53

There are many issues to face when trying to translate from Japanese to English, as it's not always a direct one to one translation.

In fact, it rarely is.

Many words and idiomatic expressions don't have an English equivalent, some things need cultural context, and so on. Right now though, I wanted to talk about names. Names that aren't native to Japanese in particular.

I'm sure many of you already know this, but written japanese is made up of Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

Kanji are Chinese characters. 忍、念、男、女、刀 星、闇、殺
But of them, Japan has designated roughly 1,945 for general usage. Each one has its own (sometimes multiple) meaning, and multiple pronunciations based on context.

力 means "strength" and is pronounced "chikara" however it can be pronunced "riki" when used in certain combinations.
馬力 bariki "horsepower" or it could also be "ryoku" when combined here 協力 kyouryoku "cooperation".

Hiragana and Katakana are Japanese Alphabets. These characters have no meaning on their own. Each is a phonetic (A, Ka, Sa, Ta, Ha, Ma, etc.)

Hiragana are used for native Japanese words and parts of speech. It looks like this:
あのさぁ、ぼくはかめがすきですけど。

Katakana on the other hand is used for non-native Japanese words or certain kinds of emphasis and looks like:
ナンデロボットガカタカナシカシャベレナイ

So for every name that is not a traditional Japanese name, it ends up spelled out phonetically within the constraints of the Japanese Alphabet. While some are fairly obvious or use common conventions for converting to English, others can be much more obscure. There's not necessarily any fully right way to go about it. There may be some outright wrong ways at times, and some almost certainly correct ways but you can never be certain until the author states how it's spelled in English.

For example, let's look at the character who up till recently was known as "Branchi" in Toriko.
His name was spelled out as BU-RA-N-CHI.
The first thing I do as a translator is look at it and see if it resembles any real life names.
Hrmmm... Nada.
Next, I just go over some possibilities: Branchie, Branchy, Buranty, etc...
Without finding anything I was too excited about, I stuck with something close to the phonetic pronunciation and hopefully safe... "Branchi." (Was never happy with that.)
Recently, "Buranchi" was revealed to be one of a group of three characters.
The other two were "DI-N-NA-A" and "NO-SHU."
So with "Dinner" and "Nosh" as two parts of a three man set and trying to figure out how "Branchi" fit with that, his name suddenly became obvious:
"Brunch"
Until something gets officially printed, it's pretty much up to the translator's discretion to decide what's gonna pass as a character's name.
Once something appears in canonical print always takes precedence.
That's a general golden rule.

For example, Roronoa Zoro.
I had always assumed the Zoro was after Zorro, the masked fictional character.
(I could be wrong on that part.)
However, as for the name "Roronoa"--
"Roronoa" is undoubtedly "L'Olonnais" from Francois L'Olonnais, a french pirate.
Buuuut his name has appeared as "Roronoa" in print by Oda numerous times, so Roronoa it is.

That's just the tip of the iceberg really. Once you get into the names of attacks and techniques or made-up concepts, along with creative and inventive kanji usage, there's a whole other world of interpretation to deal with. But I think I've rambled long enough for now.

If you found any of this interesting, had any questions about any of the translation process, drop a comment and I'll do my best to get back to you!! I find this stuff interesting myself and thought you might.

Thanks as always for reading.

You'll be doing that a lot.

Though later episodes get better about not 'dragging on' as much, One Piece has never really had DBZ syndrome- every episode generally has something interesting happening in it.

While I agree, I personally do find One Piece unwatchable simply because it still manages to move incredibly slow. For DBZ, this was because they were constantly riding the Manga's butt and they just didn't throw in enough filler episodes (choosing instead to drag out the episodes themselves), but even the one Piece manga manages to drag. If I remember right it took them over 100 chapters to finish the Enis Lobby arc, and really not that much happened in that arc (well, lots happened, but most of it was long winded explanations of things).

Granted, I doubt any can really top at this point Naruto. 3 years, about 150 chapters, and they're still doing the same story arc. Bright side, it's only that long because every month there's a new epic showdown battle starting up

Yeah I think Korra suffers from 13 episode seasons. There's never really enough time to properly build up the tension of any of the crisis' she faces so it all picks up and then barrels on like a roller coaster and the impact is kind of lost.

However, it also suffers from being, well, the Sequel Series to Avatar:The Last Airbender. It's not the same kind of story as the first, and so a lot of people went in with certain expectations that were disappointed.

It's by no means a bad show, though, and the third season (which is all available on Nick's website) is pretty awesome, imo.

But yeah, the shortness of the seasons means that nobody gets quite as much screentime as they really should, villains or heroes alike- and with few to no 'timeskips' (using the episodic format to cause time to pass without the viewer directly watching it) it almost feels like a 'monster of the week' setting, where AtLA had a single villain for the entire running.

Well I went into the first show expecting something a lot less than what it turned out to be. I'll have to give Korra a try then sometime.

I think for now I'll try Knights of Sidonia. The art style is... interesting? The first combat scene was jerky at best but it does seem to be some kind of distopian future society or similar with giant robots and tentacle having shape changing aliens. So it can't be all bad. I just hope some of these characters get killed off early or become unimportant. There are three blondes right off the bat that I simply can't be bothered to tell the difference between, maybe they'll be killed off to make death for the protagonist and secondary characters feel more real.

I thought Knights of Sidonia was merely ok in my book. The story is pretty standard, but the animation is pretty bad IMHO. So many of the characters all look alike with fair skin, same bowlcut dark hair, same face. Had a hard time keeping track of who half of them were. The fight scenes are ok, but no real choreography to them. Still watched all of it, but it was otherwise very forgettable, especially in the wake of Attack on Titan.

It gets better. Whoever was in charge of animation got the hang of it with the more eps they did. For me it was one the last season's best animes with probably the best opening. The music is fantastic and I really liked the lyrics.

By the end the animation was better by leaps and bounds and it showed in the action scene. The final fight was all kinds of fantastic and honestly, it has the line "I want an Exterminatus on that planet." You can't beat that.

Knights of Sidonia's anime I found subpar, both because of the weak animation (Kingdom has set the standard for CGI anime, lets just get up on that level people!). My issue with the series really is that it never got to the part of the manga that's actually good. Until Tsugemori arrives, Knights of Sedonia was blandish, but once she appears the story really starts picking up.

RWBY is an animated series in the style of Anime by Rooster Teeth, the guys who make Red VS Blue.

And yes, that's the voice of Cortana, those guys have good connections.

If you are interested, here are the 4 main character trailers which are quite lengthy.

The entire point of RWBY essentially is to be an anime that knows its anime and revel in every cliche and staple of the genre. And its AWESOME.

Let's see, what have I watched recently...

I've decided to start following series again rather than being a lazy ass clown who speedruns through a show long after it is finished. Among shows that are currently airing, I have seen:

Aldnoah.Zero and Zankyou Terror, which probably vie for the top spot in the current anime season for me. Akame Ga Kill!, which at first glance seemed really stupid and tryhard, and after my second, third, fourth, and fifth glance still largely is, but gosh if it isn't fun. It helps that it has a pretty likable cast, if not the most complex one. I'm watching Tokyo ESP, which is pretty fun so far as well and probably has a more compelling rogues gallery than Akame Ga Kill's so far. The Professor is a pretty cool young man. My boyfriend who isn't actually my boyfriend also has me watching .hack Sign.

Oh, and I decided to watch Sakura Trick, hating myself for it, ended up enjoying it, and I hate myself for it.

I think that's about all I've seen since my last update.

This season has had a disappointing amount of Nora thus far.

This is true.

That said, I still vote Yang for best character, mostly because Barbara voices her and I love the RT podcast.

Indeed. I still consider the JNPR team to be more interesting than the RWBY team.

Speaking of team RWBY, has anyone else noticed that they appear to follow RPG team composition?
Yang is the tank / Berserker
Weiss is the mage
Ruby is the archer / ranged character
Blake is the rogue / Assassin

Ruby has gone into melee plenty of times too. Probably closest to a ranger I guess.

Oddly Yang has probably spent more time at range than any other member of her team.

So, I found a somewhat passable Black Lagoon abridged parody

I don't know why, but the idea of Dutch getting really defensive about Michael Jordan is really amusing.

Wow crap just got real in Knights of Sidonia. The attrition rate is this high in the first few episodes and there's enough people left alive for season 2?

Sad thing is, I could totally see Nora in a top hat/mustache combo.

Seriously though, Juane's character development in the last episode made me love the guy even more (no homo).

I was more like "whoa there Jaun. You have this cute red head here, who clearly likes you, and you're chasing the girl who doesn't like you? That's socially awkward guy mistake number 1 bro"

Funny, I was like "oh snap, fool is gonna have to get a dress"

I was disappointed with the end result. Needed more heels and fishnets

I really can't decide if I like Knights of Sidonia. I like several things. But the show is starting to flat out reek of harem. Guh. The bear is also kind of throwing me off. Just a little.

Also.

What is this I see on my netflix, Ghost in the Shell ARISE? This could be worth watching?

Hmm Psycho-Pass looks interesting too.

Hunter X Hunter?

GSA is a reimagining of Ghost in the Shell, not a sequel or prequel (though the series does start before the formation of Section 8). It is an OVA series and will consist of 4 episodes I believe. I found the first episode kind of 'meh' but the second and third are fantastic. While Stand Alone Complex was good, it was more of a straight thriller with less of the mystery of the film. GSA recaptures the mystery aspects of the films while maintaining the thriller elements of the anime series.

Highly recommended. Excellent series.

Hunter X Hunter?

Imagine DBZ, but constantly on hiatus because the author is in poor health and forgetting the entire story by the time he's well enough to start up again.

Well more but different GitS is at least potentially a good thing.

I'll put Psycho-Pass on the list and maybe skip the other thing.

Oh don't let me dissuade you. Hunter x Hunter is good (if you like DBZ, or YuYu Hakusho you'll like it) but be warned that the anime has suffered as a result of the manga authors poor health. A very old school style action series.

All four episodes of Arise are out. Got three and four watched this past week and I thought they were alright. Major continues her unhealthy obsession with trying to rip reinforced tank hatches off with her bare hands though.

^Let us know if it's good

Well, finished what they had of KoS. Didn't realize there were only 12 episodes currently. Intense. Definitely got better as it went. I should like to see more when that comes about, quite a few strings to be cut or tied up.

Told ya It's the most disguised harem I ever saw, since, ya know, many of them die and a certain member of the harem is very strange

Wakfu is fairly standard in terms of story, but the animation is worth watching the whole thing through. It's all done in Flash and as the series picks up around episode 10 it starts getting really good (the last few episodes of season 1 and 2 are shockingly dark for a children's series). The characters and the animation are what really makes the series stand out, namely Ruel, Amalia, and Percidal*.

*One of my favorite parts of the series is how it constantly mocks the 'knight in shining armor' cliches and then picks up as Percidal goes from wannabe rescuer of damnsels to total bad ass

Oh, the Captain I feel totally is

Spoiler:
But the Bear, not so much, she's more of a mother-figure.

The really strange harem member is the alien placenta thing that had the shape of the girl he liked. Problem is, she was cute as sin. That scene she tried using a pen to write his name and then she breaks it, god damn, she looked so damn cute

And here I thought you were talking about the man-chick who changes gender based on who they want to be sleeping with
