Rolling a 6 in 40k is rarely 2-3 times as good as rolling a 5, barring situations where you need a 6 in the first place. Spartan Games play like everything has Rending/Killing Blow.

ho hum, another stupid way of marketing a game due out in a couple of weeks. It is almost as if the whole GW Marketing Dept (if in fact there is one) is still stuck in the 80's along with their management when this whole teasing concept thing was almost interesting.
It works in movies where they can show a 30 sec clip that shows several aspects of what is coming and when we know the basic premise of what the film is about. One poster on the back of a WD does not a teaser compaign make. it is so laughable that for the amount of money this is going to be that this is the sum total of a campaign prior to launch. Dumbasses.

Funny. While i didnt think much of AT 43, Confrontations original rules were amongst the best small scale skirmish rules ever put out, and the figures werer top notch, great fluff too. If you run the math on exploding dice, all it does is add an additional mechanic to game play to simulate the chance critical blow. It would be nice if 40k incorporated a similar mechanic. Nothing worse than a str 4 model in combat with a toughness 8 figure. Ive never made the mistake but i know those who have. LOTR used a similar mechanic to deal with heavily armed targets, only with LoTR you needed a chart. I think the mechanics that US uses seem to be very fluid and clean. Not clunky like some other game systems.

Yeah, they're not as bad as all that. It's pretty damn unlikely that you'll cause catastrophic damage to a large ship in one volley, unless you get ridiculously close to it with another large ship. Even then, it isn't a sure thing. It's not like 1 hit=1 point of damage in Dystopian Wars. I mean, I could roll 10 6s and still only cause one point of damage. I assume Spartan's other games use a very similar system, at least in the way that WHFB and 40K's systems are similar.

Yeah I think firestorm is pretty much the same, It can be annoying though as when we were trying it out I blew up my mates battlecruiser on turn 2 with an extremely jammy shot that kinda took the fun outta the game a little.
Back on topic: I really like the idea as 1) I love pirates and all things nautical, 2) I love campaign style games and would love to include a naval battle in a campaign as a pre-invasion type thing. Plus a standalone game with more than 2 fleets means it might be easier to club together with a few friends and devide the spoils so to speak.

I see what your saying Kroothawk however there is nothing suggesting this game wont sell big because it is a naval game or that Space Hulk wasnt more successful in limited numbers. One they could sell it for bunches more than what people would usually pay for because its "limited" and there is no garuntee that they wont every resell this "limited" product again. As far as this potential naval game I think it hits a certain player base. I never got into WFB because the look of the game resembled tired fantasy gimicks that games like Heroes of Might and Magic made fun of. I mean do a comparison between Vampire Counts and Blood Angels and one looks like a unique IP while the other looks like a potential Stoker lawsuit in the making. The reason I never got into WFB is the same reason I never got into Uncharted Seas, though I really enjoy the mechanics and aesthetic of Dystopian Wars. In this way a naval game from GW is good in that its not a serious enough investment so I can consider buying something that is cliche and a little hookey. If it was a product that was scalable this might be a different story. So lets face the facts the WFB fan boys and girls will buy this product because its a GW product. They might not want to admit it and shout from the hilltops that they wont but they will. However, fringe customers like myself will buy for the same reason I'll buy any board game, its a relatively small one time investment for something I will play over until I'm tired of it and sell it on ebay.

I won't be picking this one up if it's a limited release.
I was very keen to get Space Hulk; it helped that I planned to use the minis in 40K too, but I already have 1st edition rules, so the prospect of a reasonably priced, beautiful-looking update was appealing even if the rules weren't up to scratch (and, they weren't -- very clearly not as well playtested as 1st edition was, despite one or two minor improvements -- 3rd edition just isn't balanced any more).
I don't trust GW to get the rules right, and though I love a lot of the classic GW standalone games, I don't want to risk current prices on current rules writing.
A re-release of Necromunda or Mordheim would almost certainly get me to part with cash.

Ok ok. I have to admit this whole Dread Fleet does seem pretty crazy seen as they could go with pretty much any other old GW box game and had a better reception. All i'm saying is wait and see what GW come up with, I mean there must be some reason for them doing this over say Necromunda or Warhammer Quest. I recon based on that they must be cooking something pretty special (hopefully). I say wait to see what GW have come up with.

The problem is, though, that if it's a limited release, we can't wait.
If it turns out to be a decent game, we're *not going to know* until it's no longer available. With Space Hulk, at least we knew we could use the old rules, if necessary (which is what I do if I play now -- 1st edition rules, other than 3rd edition Librarian and Broodlord game stats).

Thats what GW is counting on...people who are willing to shell out the cash and take the chance.
I cant say for sure what Ill do...but if I had to predict Ill likely miss out. Between Mantics Warpath coming out soon and new Necrons coming soon theres already more than I have budget for...
If the ships look really good, the price is decent (by GW standards), and my $$$ allows I might grab a copy.

Im pretty sure GW have said the reason they haven't done WHQ was because they "lost" all the material on it during an office move about 10 years ago and no one knows where it all went or something. This sounds like a pretty lame excuse as surely they wouldnt need much more than copies of the old books to have a look through, I imagine they'd want to change things a fair bit anyway. regardless of what I think of their excuse its obvious that for whatever reason, they don't like WHQ and don't want to do it again /em sadface.

warhammer quest was fun. I had everything and sold it for a pretty penny. They could have remade a dozen differnet ideas but someone in GW is out of touch. This seems like a reocuring theme with them.

Interested in the next half year business report with maybe Necrons the only major 40k release and the rest only Fantasy and this boxed game. Remember: In USA, Warhammer Fantasy sales are below Warmachine sales. Vote with your wallet and watch GW ignoring the vote 7th year in a row

They could have remade Necromunda, or Mordheim, or even BFG, but no, they had to go and remake one of the few specialist games that I have 0 interest in.

Jeez, wait until you see it before you crank up the whining. It's hardly amounts to shafting anything if they were never going to re-do one of those specialist games in the first place. And maybe - just maybe - it'll be a good game. Personally, I wouldn't mind a self-contained game without a string of add-ons.

Blood Bowl is one of the least likely candidates for a re-release, IMO. The rules still function well and are pretty good for a GW game. The box set still stands up well without looking dated as does the majority of the miniature line. No real reason for it to be re-released beyond what it is now.

As a self-proclamed naval gaming fan, Dread Fleet officialy has my interest. I'm not sure if it is going to be an automatic purchase for me, though. The timing is a bit interesting, as this will be hitting right about the time that Spartan is going to be re-launching Uncharted Seas. I already know and like the Spartan rules system, and I know what the re-done US models will look like (i.e, AWESOME). However, I don't know what any of the minis in this will look like, or how it will play. On the other hand, this looks to be a limited release ....
Aww, who am I kidding. I will probaly end up picking this up.

Can't say I ever say any statement like that. The 'official' word way back when the GW forums were still running was that WHQ was unlikely to return for the same reason that all of the cards were removed from 40K and WHFB... cardstock printing had reached the point where it just wasn't economically viable to include it in their games. The sheer amount of cardboard in WHQ made it too expensive to produce.
