oh and I'd make all the bikes go random directions. They must attempt to maintain squad coherency in their next movement phase. Any model friend or foe hit by this move suffers D3 S3 AP5 hit.

Gitsplitta wrote:Gitsplitta wrote:Perhaps a bit simpler... say that movement for a unit of grot mono-cycles effectively "scatters" d3 inches per turn if they fire.
So they move like normal. If they shoot, the recoil from the guns sends the mono-cycles spinning off in some random direction d3 inches (resolved *after* shooting), so it won't effect shooting range, but might effect any potential moves in the next phase). You can do it bike-by-bike if you want, but given the rules it would probably be better to roll one scatter die for the entire mob. A "hit" indicates they just spun around in circles (you can point them in a random direction for fun, but it won't effect anything game-wise.
I quote myself. Please re-read the first sentence of the explanation... that's how they go forward. There's no stability to the one wheel design so the recoil could send the bikes spinning off in any direction. IG mortars don't need to worry about unit coherency... grots do. There is precedent for doing it by unit. Grot tanks move a random distance each turn, but you roll once for the entire unit, not for each tank.
Yeah, I did see that. Spinning would be fine if there was only one gun, or if both guns were on one side, but I would have thought guns firing from both sides would, at most, cause scattering in the rear 180 degree arc. I also still prefer the individual scatter and "must retain coherency in their own movement phase" to the entire unit scatters in the same direction as it seems more likely. There's precident for this too IIRC, but I can't remember where. Is it when someone drives a vehicle through the middle of your lined up unit?
Then again, that's just my opinion

That assumes they both fire in synchonisation - unlikey for Orky workings. Fire right gun, spin complete 180 then fire left gun = forward movement! (and miss, but, you know - bs2 or 3 for grotz)

Arakasi has the idea. I figured the guns would not fire cleanly... there'd be misses, gaps, etc that would make the shooting uneven and result in the random scatter.
Also I was trying to keep the rules for the bikes consistent with current 40k rules, where there are no examples of preferential scatter (ie the bikes not being able to scatter forward). If you really didn't like that idea, you could just have them go 1-3" backwards each time they fire, which could also be done on a per bike basis.

It's one thing to paint proficiently, its quite another to be able to tell a story at a glance on a model. from objective markers, to old school Orks, (my favorite) to just boyz being boyz, good job and thanks for sharing!

schank, that's a question for you...
There should be a new ork soon. Will be working on a cybork grotherd for the fun of it. There's a bunch of really cool cybork parts out there available from Kromlech but they're pricey and shipping from eastern Europe usually takes forever... so I'm going to have to make due with what I've got or can invent. (I don't have a mechanical mind... so I don't expect to be able to do anything too fancy.)
Also should be getting a bunch of grots that Ifalna painted for me later today. All I have to do is base them and I'll get pics up. She did a beautiful job with them. I've been so busy with other projects that I knew I wouldn't have the time to get them done myself, so farming them out seemed like a good idea. She's doing 3 other special projects for me, all Forge World. So there should be some really neat things trickling into my Bad Moon army from time to time.
Should have pics of the grots up in a few days.

OK guys, couldn't wait any longer...
My grots did come in today (thank you Ifalna!). I love them!
So here's a quick pic of my grot army. Everything here is as represented save for the RT/1st Ed bikes on the left which will eventually get converted in a Nob bike squad for the gretchin. I may wait until 6th edition comes out though before I lay into these guys. I'll eventually fill out the kans, perhaps even getting one more group... and get another mob. Rather than grots, I may put of truk mob together of normal orks but with a pirate theme to act as "freebooter mercenaries" that have signed on with the grots for adventure and teef. At the moment I have to Big Meks to lead the circus, but a fellow dakkanaught (CommissarKhaine) is building a grot version of Wazdakka for me who will be the signature leader for the band.
It's a big pic, feel free to zoom in. This army is far from done, but a little here and there with some surprises along the way and I should have a playable force.

I think I'm at 7 armies if you count my kids' in there with mine (as I need to work on all of them). Too many. If you count the armies-within-armies (i.e. grots w/in my Bad Moons and two different types of Mantis Warriors), then 9 armies.

@fatty: Yes, true... course fees can be brutal too. But it can't take up MORE time than painting all these blasted armies... it just cant!
@GiraffeX: I'll just play them out of the regular ork dex. Think of them as a contingent of my Bad Moon army rather than a true "rebel grot" force. As far as an army list... I don't really have one in mind for them, just sticking to the grot theme as much as possible. Figure I'd add a couple of trukk mobs of mercenary orks, fill out the kans... oh and eventually add some forge world stuff like the grot tanks run as buggies (or as themselves) and a Mega-Dread that's been commandeered by gretchin.
What I'm really short on are good ideas for elites... have to put some thought into that... I'm no where near as good a scratch builder & modifier as the folks who really do the grots well. Kind of why I'm going to be careful about what I do with this army before 6th edition comes out... what to see what changes are in the offing before I invest a lot of money and time in modifications.
