Welcome gentlemen, this thread is aimed at those who can remember the days when Citadel Miniatures came in little poly bags with a card top, when GW shops (the few that there were) sold games from other companies (as well as their own) and White Dwarf covered a miriad of different companies games.
Use it to reminice about all the old games and figures you used to own (and possibly still do) and moan about how 'it used to be better in my day...'
Any youngsters feel free to read, treat it like a history lesson on a subject you actually enjoy

I miss those days especially when ever there was a grand opening of a new store they had 3 for 2 offers on every thing in store including the £100 army kits. The days when GW acctually HAD SALES!!! The days when the staff at a GW store had no Uniform and a leather jacket was the order of the day. When a battle of Warhmmer fantasy was fought between four armies trying to retrieve a magic sword from an outhouse When Games Workshop used to produce jigsaw Puzzles ...sigh

I'm old enough to remember when we didn't have GW stores here (at all - in fact, NO corporate presence). I don't remember minis in baggies, though.
When scratchbuilt vehicles that looked "close enough" WERE good enough, and when vehicles other than the few metals (speeder, buggies) and the plastics (Rhino, Raider and Battlewagon) HAD to be scratchbuilt or kitbashed from something else.
When Wraithguard were under a tenner per figure (and not the $25+ they are now (AUD), but cost twice as much in points.
Of course, in Oz, different companies held the distribution rights for rpgs (GW had the UK market) - Paranoia was a WEG thing, Chaosium did Cthulhu, and TSR had D&D, and different states had their own distribution deals with these companies.

Sorry, haven't had any random psychos going nutso with a carbine recently (have had similar issues with bodies in barrels, though - well, there are chemical plants still here), and a 'valley woman DID carve up her hubby and store him in the freezer (but she did work at the local chook processors).
As to a description of Newcastle, Aus.
It used to be a mining AND Steel town (but they closed down the mill), so now it's just a mining town - with the largest coal loader in the southern hemi (much to the greenies' chagrin).
It's got a rather high unemployment rate and many university students. Also has a problem with bogans (Cheese might enjoy the change).
We have a footy team that's crap, a soccer team that's not too bad, and our own GW store. We have pretty nice beaches (even if half a boat is parked on one and we had a temporary twin on the opposite shore for a while).
There are 8 pubs within a 10 minute walk of my place - so it isn't all bad.

Sounds much the same as Our Newcastle excpt that ours was a Ship Building town and full of Geordies and far more pubs and Newky Brown Ale. They are also known by some as Scots with thier heads bashed in, As it has been captured by the Scots so many times! On Topic: I can remember there being soo many more choices back then and so many prospects but now GW is just on a looped tape refreshing all the same codexes over and over again and I'm sure the codexes like Curly Werly bars get smaller and smaller. The 2nd Ed codexes were proper codexes with so much more fluff! Or was I just smaller back then?

Everything is related to internet porn.
Rule 34, my friend.
There are three things that hasten the development of the internet and IT in general War, Porn and computer games.
However these three things are not equal: War 20%, Gaming 10% Porn 70%
Therefore 2/3 of everything can be related to porn.

My FLGW has sales still, only on bunker birthday and x-mas though, but they practicly throw free stuff at you, like I got the book salamander a month early and it wad a signed copy, some luckey *foo* got a free reaver battle titan. I think it is a devious marketing ploy, but it's nice anyways. Oh, and free pizza saturdays.
OFC, the free book made me want to start a salamanders army sooo bad. I guess it works then, like that guy who one the <blank> battleforce, guess he's going to do? Buy another at 20% off!

I started going to Games Workshop when it was the original and only store, in Dalling Road, Hammersmith.
Citadel Miniatures hadn't been thought of yet. GW was a general wargame and RPG shop.
The first Citadel figures I bought cost 25p, which seemed expensive at the time. A similar figure now would cost about £2.50.

I remember the greatest Warhammer 40,000 resource of all time, the Almighty Citadel Journal. House rules, wild conversions, fiction and all other sort of cool stuff. I treasured it more than any issue of White Dwarf. Chapter Approved was almost an acceptable solution, but even that was taken away from us. Why have you forsaken us, Games Workshop?

I used to travel down from Luton to go to the Hammersmith shop, and remember paying 25p for figures. When the figures went into blisters I used to visit there more often as they split them into draws of types to sell individualy (still have a small Citadel Pygmy warband I bought from there).
The other shop I used to go to in London was the Virgin games one for all the unusual figures (like Groo and Turtles) and import games.

I'd forgotten the sales.
When they opened a new store here, they had opening day sales.
The first few were 'buy two, get a third of equal or lesser value free' (many battleforces were bought).
Then they changed to buy two, get the third (same conditions, equal or lesser value of the cheapest) for 1/2 price.
Then they stopped the sales completely.
I used to actually travel for the sales. Wollongong grand opening was over an hour's train ride (I lived in Sydney at the time). Chatswood, likewise. Sydney Battlebunker was closer, still I actually wanted to go into a store.

Meh. And, I was hoping we'd be talking about actual Gentlemen's Clubs - i.e. strip joints... Anyhow, it's been a long time since GW's had the buy 2 / get 1 free when I first got in. Pity, that.

Saving all the my pennies, Pocket, Birthday and car wash money than scanning White Dwarf for where the nearest Grand opening/re-opening was going to happen and pleading with my parents to take me there.
I remember later in my gaming days Portsmouth had it's grand re-opening on the same day Gorka Morka was released. The queue for that was huge and one of the staff member thought it would be funny 10 minuets after the doors opened to come out and say that they had sold out... he very quickly retracted that statement as a joke and ran and hid inside .
