With rumors of 6th edition abound I thought it would be a good time to compile a list of Codexes left to be updated before 6th edition comes out; plus! Any new races or codexes you'd like to see introduced or brought back in 6th...

Without further ado.

Codexes left:

Necrons (Coming soon)

Tau (Early 2012 apparently)

Sisters of battle (Seen some pictures of resin sculpts for them, looks good. The army is great but all metal hurts sales...)

Eldar (They won't be getting an update apparently, only Forge world and White dwarf stuff)

Chaos Marines (Desperately, if only to bring some of the flair back to them)

Orks (Are not in need of a new codex. In my opinion they were made with 5th edition in mind but still...)

Chaos (Needed a refit even before Grey Knights re-entred the scene)

Codexes I'd like to see:

Ad Mech (I know we need another Imperial force like we need a hole in the head. This thought may leave me with Grey Knights...)

Lost and the Damned (True to life Fallen Imperial guard. I think that'd be cool)

Kroot Mercs (40K needs more Xenos, plain and simple)

Something else, maybe something that uses nothing but sonic weaponry or just messes with stats rather than do direct damage?

Did I miss a codex? Any other Xenos or other races you'd like to see. Please no variant SM. We have far too many of them already

You missed both Black Templars and Dark Angels, although the recent FAQs left both my beloved Templars and our secretive brethren in a place which is good enough for us to not need a new 'dex before 6th IMO.

Yeah I left DA and BT out because of the FAQs

Wait, so you put Orks, who were built in 4th but with 5th in mind, in, but didn't include DA or BT because of the FAQ? I'm confused

40K does not need more Xenos, it needs fewer SM codexes.

There are six Xeno armies, or seven if you included Daemons.

There are six SM armies, including CSM, and not including Witch Hunters (Sisters of Battle) who are also power armour and arguably should be included.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I agree, what's the point of making "Codex Space Marines" in the first place if they are anyways going to make a bunch more space marine codexes (then they could have as well renamed it to codex ultramarines). I think they should just stick with one codex space marines and possibly add some more chapter specific characters. The amount of armies otherwise is enough. The more they make the more outdated they will be from time to time and the harder it is to balance the game. My comment is still kind of pointless since space marines is what sells the most and they would never change the game in a direction which means selling less.

Eh? Where'd you see these resin sculpts? I heard they were being worked on, but didnt think anyone seen them yet.

In any case, I think AdMech and LotD can easily be a 'counts as' for an Imperial Guard army, and from the examples Ive seen, they work pretty well. And Kroot already fall under the Tau Empire. Having Kroot Mercs wouldnt really be a big enough influence in the universe to actually warrant its own codex, though an all-kroot army made possible through the Tau codex is a good idea.

And Im of the mind Orks should be left as is until well after 6th comes out. I like that codex the way it is.

I'd like to see LatD mixed in with CSM's and Chaos Daemons into a single book, and all flavours of marines put into a single book. Its never going to happen but we can wish

I just don't want any of my armies to be updated before 6th ed, The change from 4th to 5th really raped Eldar. If they're all up to date with the new version of the game, rather than just being brilliant for a couple months and then getting ruined by the changes in the new rule book I'll be happy.

'Crons and Chaos need updating the most. The trouble with 'which need updating before 6th' evaluation is that we are currently suffering from the Ward Effect:

Ward Effect:
'The feeling that the current set of codeci are underpowered/broken in the current edition rises exponentially with the number of codeci written by Matt Ward.

Example: Orks/Nids/Guard considered top-tier until SW/BA/GK released, now these armies are mid-tier

But chaos need the next update, simply because apart from one or two units the current codex is a bit rubbish, simply because the units have been diluted so much that they are only interesting in the fluff, and considering how much chaos is involved in the fluff, they don't seem to get much attention...

Yeah you need to expand on these SOB resin sculpts since I haven't heard anything about that, but would love to be proven wrong (unless you mean that one guy has seen them and reported what they looked like).

The one thing we are missing from 5'th is an offbeat add on book that expands an existing army or two without introducing a bunch of stupid extra rules and would actually be appropriate for normal games/tournaments and not considered "opponents permission". Kind of how the old Craftworld: Eldar or the Armageddon books were. For example what about a Codex: Rouge Trader that wasn't an actual army list but added some extra Inquisitorial allies to Imperial, and extra Xenos options to everyone else.

I'd be happy if they waited until 6th edition to release a new Chaos Codex. It would be even better if they made Chaos/Chaos Daemons in a single codex. Very little reason not to do so, as it would drastically increase the viability of cult armies.

So if we include BT/DA with the mix, that makes 3 imperial armies (SoB, DA, BT) and 5 non-imperial armies (Tau, Eldar, CSM, Daemons, Orks). That means only 3 xenos armies are going to get updates this edition (omitting necrons who are likely getting some love this summer). I think Daemons and Orks will get the short end of the stick, making both of them possible in the 6th edition starter set.

Your list is missing DA and BT as some have said and I wouldn't say Necrons are 'coming soon' as there doesn't seem to be too much solid evidence for that, although Kroothawk is the 'expert' on the subject...

I would also argue again Kroot Mercenaries.

I would love to see a Rogue Trader Codex.

My thoughts on armies that NEED updates:
Necron (they are coming, and since they are most in need and are my favorite army, I couldn't be happier)
Tau Empire Cha(Hopefully including rules for a Kroot Merc army as well)
Chaos (both Demons and Marines)
Witchhunters/Sisters
Eldar (I find it ridiculous that they are still waiting for an update)
Orks (Yes, they were created with 5th in mind, but you can tell they didn't have a good feel for 5th yet when it was designed)

Additional armies I would like to see:
Genestealer Cults
Squats (I know this is a dream, but.....)
Xenos Hunters
Slann (Someone needs to be out there who can properly resist the coming wave of Necron Tomb Worlds awakening)
A brand new Xenos army with a really alien feel

Chaos, both marines and daemons, suffers from two things.

1) They were made during this rather nebulous time at GW where they seemed to be trying to simplify and balance things based on what was currently out. As such the CSM got severely reduced in complexity(and as a result power).

2) They weren't written by Matt Ward. While no one should want their codex to be written by him, if you want to have a powerful codex that is generally what you want. Other writers seem to aim for some degree of balance, while he tries to make the most broken codex he can.

As such, I do agree that CSM need a new codex, albeit not before some of the other armies that are hurting even worse(Necrons and Tau mainly).

Matt Ward just loves stupid fanboy wankfests where his stuff is so cool and powerful and can't really keep himself under control when he writes rules. My friend's theory on why Codex Marines wasn't TOO crazy was because the entire company was breathing down his neck to make sure that the release of their most iconic army was received well.

A Gene stealer cult would be an awesome army but I doubt it will ever happen again.

I dont get why they actually let him anywhere near the codexes in the first place, he shouldn't have ever been let out of the little WotR Gollum cave. I like the fact that SW and BA have new codexes as they are quite possibly my 2 favourite chapters ever but I hate the fact that Matt Ward wanked all over them I have to resist the urge to wash my hands after reading them sometimes.

Matt Ward is pretty much all they have left which is probably why. He did Fantasy 8th (and royally screwed it over) and is apparently doing 75% of the 40k codices (I believe Necrons is his work as well). If that dude gets in a car accident Games Workshop isn't going to know what the f.

What about doing something with the enslavers. That way we can really stick it to psyker heavy armies like the GK. Theres alot of potential behind a ancient race that completely destroyed the most sophisticated race of the time.

CSM need it the most. But at the mo I could still feth the hell out of a BA army with my 'weaker' list.javascript:emoticon('\');

If GW are worth their collective salt they'll recognise that with the release of the RPGs players are going to want a more narrative army, so roll on Rogue Traders and a cherry pick Allied Inquisitor codex that encompasses Ordo Xenos (w/Deathwatch options), Ordo Malleus (without GK), and Ordo Hereticus (without SoB).

All praise the Omnissiah!

I remember seeing a picture or two of a sister jump soldier which was pretty good... I'll see if I can find the link.

Problem is I think that theres a few codexes out there that are almost unplayable. I've been having luck with my Eldar but mostly because people aren't expecting eldar to be played and don't know what to do.

Tau are screwed but not as much as Necrons. Sisters do alright and Orks do better. If only because they're so fun. Chaos Marines are somewhere in the middle.

I agree that Kroot mercs could be done in the Tau codex. Maybe a special character allows access to an all Tau codex or some such.

Deamons I don't know what to do, since they had defensive and offensive grenades before they even existed which means 5th edition. Still, I don't think they knew what 5th edition was going to become at that point.

I can't imagine they'd do that. I would think they would do something along the lines of the Chaos 3.5 Codex, with legion-specific rules.

If I'm not mistaken, Phil Kelly did the SW codex, which IMO is more overpowered than the BA codex (not by a lot seeing how both armies can do razorspam quite effectively).

On moon miranda.

Individual Legion books were something mentioned by Gav Thorpe as a possibility before his departure, however not likely to happen at this point after three and a half years.

EDIT: I should also clarify that in all honesty, I agree that we need fewer SM book in general. Loyalist SM's can be done in a single book, as can the Chaos Space Marines, with maybe a couple online PDF's or WD sublists. Going from 7 SM books to say, 3 (SM, CSM, GK) would cut nearly 2 years from the marketing pipeline.

Me personally would love to see a whole Legion of The Damned Codex but that's just me. But I do agree that new Xeno books should be made, maybe a Straight up merc book with different Xeno mercenaries and human mercs. Maybe a book about zombies or wolfmen, heck even lizardmen. A Xeno book that uses destructive primitive weapons and lots of beasts of burden, maybe make a sith type army or snake people. Maybe even a mutant codex. All and all more creatures for the emperors finest to crush is a need.

I'd also spend every penny I own for a Soul Drinkers Codex
