Back home - thrilled about the activity in the blog and the fact I should have a very special delivery arriving any day. I have a few more reasons to be excited. We are moving to San Francisco because of my work, and I'm looking forward to a ton of related matters. That and the PIMP my WIZARD deadline is looming, even if I am a little worried how I will manage taking pics of the red.

Gerner's just posted further proof of Thorn vs Talon too!

GREAT!

May I ask where you got the centre model of 'The divine light'?

WOW SF that's one heck of a move, and gl MIGS. Cali has a great 40k community so you should have a blast out there.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Thanks guys,

A special day, lots of stuff going on, but I did try to take pics of the =I= today. And failed miserably once more. I've now tried every possible set-up. The camera simply isn't up to the red. I'm getting quite worried. I'm becoming fed up with the whole model just because there seems to be no way to convey the message for the competition...

A small update to sis Valencia though:

Red is definately the hardest colour to photograph.

You could try shooting on a blue-white transitional backdrop. I believe printed transitions from photoshop are working fine for this.
That sometimes helps the red to stay strong and vivid.

Congratulations on the move to SF. I've only been once, but I loved it and want to go back at some point.

I know it's cheating slightly, but have you tried fiddling with the photo's contrast/saturation settings a little bit? Alternatively JRN's suggestion of photographing him against a slightly different coloured background might work. It'd be a real shame to lose interest purely because a photograph doesn't come out properly

I've never experienced this dire of a problem with photography to be honest - the contrast of being so excited with the result of painting and so damn disappointed what shows on the screen...

But anyway, enough of that. Valencia is almost ready for prime!!

So here's the =I=, and my Pimped Wizard for the challenge, utterly disappointed with the pics...

It's been a fantastic event and I'm honored to be in that company. I think events like this epitomize the best parts of the hobby and the camaraderie and positive friendly competitiveness where everyone is looking to outdo each other.

My challenge turned btter sweet in the end though...

I'm happy with the paint job & model but very disappointed with my camera's ability to photograph red. It's been unlike any previous hobby project+photo taking. I think those of you who've followed my work for a bit, know for a fact this tirade is very rare. Getting excited and achieving a red with so much variation (like the blue of the Legion marines really) with out it looking pink or orange anywhere, and then utter frustration trying to take photos.

I was also very happy with the face and eyes and how they visually strongly connect to his smoldering fingers. But yeah... the pic... anyway.

In fact it has been frustrating to the extent that I won't continue with the retinue until getting a proper camera, and am instead starting on the Twist Tusk, as I picked up the Thunder Tusk kit today, and will be working on the Legion project for a while.

I'm with bebop: not knowing what I'm missing out, think it looks great. I think I can see what you mean about losing definition in the color gradation/variance. I think it shows up best in the top right pic, but mostly on the palm and wrist. I think the lighting is most effective in that pic as well. Have you played with the white balance at all?

Tho, I do say: where is a pic of his back? Even with the missing red tones, I'd like to see his gear. (please)

I popped over to your log and the first member of the retinue is looking fabulous. That grav-engine flag is an amazing addition, are the new weapons with perfectly griping fingers.

And I'm quite looking forward to the tusk creature.

The way you painted the ]I[ symbol on his clothing is spectacular. I can't comment on the red not having seen it in person.

That drapery is amazing... I'm guessing it's all freehand, couldn't be a stencil but maybe you used tape to get those straight lines, anyway came out perfect. And the green underneath that hammer is very cool it really pops out. My only quibble would be that I want to see more little details or colors in amongst the red of his chest as some of it seems to just blob together. The face came out perfect too.

The skirt with the =I= is great and amazing work on that. The upper honestly is rather flat and somewhat disapointing but I love the conversion of the model.

Thanks for your very kind words and commentary.

Take a look at my Avatar pic. The red has about the same variation as the Legion blue The range is just on a shorter area. So consider the extent the pic fails to capture it! Completely.

The plan was to make him almost knightly, very religious, like a priest of sorts, and only in the face and eyes you see evil and hint of corruption. The Rest of the gang are then like devils on his shoulder, with Valencia representing salvation (or rather, mercy).

Having had problems photographing red before, I can sympathise with your problems; having said that I think the paintjob is stunning. I especially like the freehand on the robes, it's very subdued and fits with the more solemn role you've given him.

Once you've managed to get better photos, I'd be interested to know how you painted the red without using?

The only thing that I think lets him down a little is the lettering on his armour. It looks like someone has written graffiti on his armour rather than it being properly written by artisans

Oh, wow... that is a bad camera. "Bad camera!"

Well I can see what you mean then. That is rather frustrating.

On a more positive note, I can't believe I forgot to comment on the spilling chalice on his belt! That is an awesome touch. Will that run through the retinue as well? (As I see Valencia has one prominently featured)

Red is the worst colour to photograph in my experience.
I hate it when I've been paid to do a portrait set and they turn up wearing red, takes me hours to get it right!

But I can make out what you mean, and it looks good!

I feel this way too looking at the pic. Its' built from dark red to very light, and I wonder if the lack of red scale makes the letters look so severe? It's much neater in real life. But then nothing should look as rough as that, so I will try to fix it somehow tomorrow .

Hey Miggs,

Some things that really work for me...

- the eyes... gods are they cool
- the glow on the hammer face
- the robes (beautiful)
- the metal inquisition symbol on his belt
- the pose: the way the figure flows from the bottom of his robe up to the fingers on his right hand is just really well done

The red is just really flat looking & no where near as dynamic as your other stuff. Based on your comments I'm sure it's the camera issue, too bad as it's a brilliant figure otherwise. Dunno, perhaps the red would be less flat looking if there were some other splashes of something (metal of some sort) here and there to break it up? In any case, I'm guessing the red looks fantastic in person but you may have to come up with some "tricks" that get it to work with photography if it's a color you want to keep working with and showing off.

The only thing I'm not sold on the the "puritis" on his chest. The crudity of it just seems at odds with the rest of what is a very refined and tidy figure.

Been a real pleasure keeping up with your work Miggs.

My comment was a bit harsh, so my apologies. It's certainly much neater than my writing at that size
Looking at the image again I think the text will be fine. I think the photograph will be affecting the text as it's so much larger than in real life, plus you don't have as much definition in the reds surrounding the text so there's not as much clarity in where the text should be. Maybe a thin wash of red over the text to tone it down a bit?
