Not very good photos; off an iPad, and at night. The last few stages should change the look quite significantly. It's unlikely I'll get much chance to stop for decent photos now, so this may be the last update until it's done...

Holy crap. My eyes. Wonderful.

I have to ask WD, how long do you think you have spent on fine detailing the crack lines? Was it one of those things that took much longer than expected or was it relatively quick? It's such a lovely final effect.

The crack lines are pretty quick - freehand the black, then carefully underhighlight in the right direction. On the black it's trickier as you have to double-line the cracks to get them to pop. That got faster when I figured out I should freehand both sides of the line (tramlining) in grey first, rather than attempt to work black on black, then just go back and retouch the intersections. I think maybe around 50 hours in total, probably 10% of that time is spent in planning where the highlights have to go to be right on the finished piece. Sometimes it doesn't look right when you're holding the individual part as it's at a funny angle in the final pose.

Certainly it's more work than I was originally going to do, but I got carried away on the bolter - it had a rough surface, so I thought, 'oh I'll just do some cracks along that rough bit, that'll hide it'... an hour later I'd done too much so it'd only look right over the whole surface.... and if THAT surface is fully cracked, shouldn't the rest be... Ah well, it looks good now.

If you had that many Titans at your disposal I think you'd become immortal by default.

I interspaced it with doing chipping on the gold trim to keep the routine varied a bit. The trick to huge jobs is to break them down into more manageable jobs that you can switch between when required. There does end up with a lot of processes to hold in your head at once though.

subbed. this is an amazing project two quick questions for you:

1. on the IG models you did early on, you have some really great chip/gouge marks on the carapace armor plates and the chain sword. how'd you paint those up?
2. on the titan, the metal seems to have some texture and depth to it. is that just a trick of the camera or intentional (and if so, how'd you do it?)

looking forward to more updates!

1) Black lines, rotting flesh underlines for the most part.

2) Presuming you mean the steel colour, mostly Intentional. Several airbrush coats (which came out a bit grainier than I'd have liked), oil washes, bit of drybrushing. Still a bit more to do on it.

Thats just truly amazing, it really really is. I've never seen anything painted to such a high standard the cracking is like the icing on the top.

The barrel that's being knocked over by its foot is pure class, cant wait to see this finished but its like ones of those books that you hope never ends.

That barrel is only there to help support the foot; by accident the diagonal length of the GW barrel is exactly what I needed to space the foot off the floor by. The titan does stand quite happily without it, but it does start to sag over time, especially in heat. That spacer prevents it happening. If you're interested the point of sag is actually a twist that happens along the right 'knee'. The leg there is very thin, and the only way I could reinforce is by having parallel rods (2x 3mm diameter), which isn't a great resistance to torque. It won't get far (the weight isn't enough to bend the rods that much) but it does become noticable.

Looking sensational, winterdyne - I really hope it gets you an award of some description from GD.

Out of interest, could you give us a quick breakdown on what you'd say you've got left to do?

Off the top of my head, the main jobs to go are:

Mask off the newly glazed windows in the head. Paint inner frames and touch up the flat coat.

Paint the supporting barrel. Model something to be spilling off it to up the dynamics and have it definitely read as falling rather than propping.

Flat coat the remaining IG. Nids are already done.

Hit all lenses, control panels and anything I want super shiny with gloss.

Washes / Pigment / dust build up on legs, feet. Generally scum it up some. Few bits here and there need a touch more oils, flat coats should seal it down (avoiding lenses).

Go and add drool to some of the nids. Water effects for spilling things - bucket, barrel.

Overall 'dusting' filter coats. This should buld the top of the titan towards a sandy / buff colour.

Attach the weapons. Possibly a bit more with the airbrush to balance things out here and there.

Position the dead nids, mix up some Tamiya Clear Red and some lightish blue; I want a semi-transparent purplish goop for nid blood. Apply that around the place.

Mix up some more clear red, but for a human sort of colour of juice. Apply that.

Make up some more ivy, ferns, plants, flowers etc. Ramp up the groundwork. Print, weather and apply newspapers around the place (being blown from the bureau). Flat coat the ground work, maybe gloss the leaves. Dunno about that yet.

Get the plaque made. Figure out some way of safely transporting it to Birmingham (and ideal to post to SIngapore later).

Edit: The banners also need doing, and there's a decal missing on the front of the head. Probably need to print it.

I figured out what to do with some dead space on the diorama. BURN IT. BURN IT WITH FIRE!

And somebody requested a close up of the Warhound Designation mark. Also you'll notice the supporting barrel is now tied in to the base. I figure it's safer to make it part of the display rather than have it removable.

No pics of the titan till after GD now. Want to keep the finished (and it is) beasty under wraps for now. :-) Still have to add the banners and some more brass etch foliage anyway. Should be done with everything late tonight.

Have you done the blood and general gribbliness on the 'Nids yet, winterdyne? The Hormagaunt in that last picture looks remarkably pristine.
