Is there anyone in this show who isn't a backstabbing, conniving jerk-off?

In short - No.
Although d-usa has the right of it, it really switches your perception of the characters as time goes on.
Well, there may be one truly neutral/good person:
Spoiler:
I think Varys may be the closest thing so far to a person without any malice, no intend to personally gain from anything, and who just wants what is best for the realm and the people.
Spoiler:
I'm not so sure about him, he was plotting with someone in the tunnels about the war between the starks and the lanisters starting to soon. I think he's still a staunch targaryen supporter. I would have went with jon snow, but the last book he just really seemed out of character. I think the only left who's really no longer a backstabbing conniving jerk off would oddly enough be jaime lanister.
Spoiler:
I guess part of the problem would be deciding if a stable rule under the Targaryen (even with the occasional mad king) would be better for the realm and the people than continuing wars between "good" kings.
Spoiler:
I'd say Dany's at least a reasonable approximation of a character who at least has their heart in the right place. It's kinda the whole reason she's been stewing in Slaver's Bay for so long.
I sometimes agree about Varys. Then sometimes I don't. He is a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a spaghetti marinara, hold the meatballs.

He does normally seem to be working for the realm, but I've only just finished A Feast for Crows...
Spoiler:
I haven't seen him at all since he escaped with Tyrion at the end of Storm of Swords. I've just read the first chapter with Tyrion in in Dance with Dragons, but no mention of Varys just yet...

well he was plotting with Illiyrion (s??) in the first book.
arya's story is working quite well with it being sped up.
Spoiler:
Renly's death scene was actually quite well done but they completely cut out edric storm unless they plan to do his part later
Currently debating whether to study for my exams or paint some Deathwing

He was plotting with Illyrio... And it was Illyrio's house Tyrion ended up in... I want to find out where the crafty bugger has got too! I suppose I'll just have to read on....
The fact that the killer Arya saved ('A man must pay his debts') claims he is a servant of the Red God, like the priestess. In the books he is actually the servant of another entity, one that still hasn't been fully explored by the later books. Is this going to clash later?

But only awesome crimes like bushranging and, if I understand the song correctly, sheep stealing and suicide.

Interesting point. I haven't heard if GRRM gave his approval for that or not.
Spoiler:
I know one of the deviations the TV series made (Mago's death), is going to be an issue later, as Dany is about to reunite with him at the end of ADwD.

I think the issue with Mago could be easily solved by just replacing him with another of Khal Drogo's surviving bloodriders. It's not really that huge of a deal, since the bloodriders are mostly supporting characters to begin with, and even more in the background in the TV series than in the books (they aren't even all named in the TV series, are they?). It'll probably just end up being basically the same character but with a name other than Mago, which isn't really anything to get worked up about in the long run I don't think.
I'm not sure about Jaqen H'ghar. It's certainly possible that Jaqen H'ghar could be a follower of the Red God, but keep in mind that Jaqen H'ghar doesn't really exist. He's basically just a character played by a Faceless Man we don't really know anything about.

Martin has editorial control throughout because he sold the rights that way, like Rowling did and Tolkien didnt.
To make the series fit for TV some characters need amalgamating, others renaming and yet more ignoring. I dont think this really affects continuity or degrade beyond an acceptable level of accuracy.
Thinning out the recurring characters is a good long term ploy, other similar characters can grow into amalgamated roles. Also the plot change emphasised the threat this factions characters were under at the time.
then there are other considerations independent of the plot. It is possible the actor concerned was not avialable long term and so was removed now in a controlled manner.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

so its been a year since george finished ADWD. so I check to see if anything has been said about starting the next book, and he last update is still the one from a year ago saying ADWD is done.
