quick question....
if a model with a plasma weapon rolls a gets hot! and you fail the save, does that model have to be removed, or can you allocate the wound to the squad as you would for any other save?

You remove the model with the affected plasma weapon.

Actually I have a related question I've been wondering about.

A model inside a transport cannot normally be wounded or taken as a casualty while embarked in a transport, correct? I always wondered how this interacted with the Gets Hot! rule with a model firing a plasma weapon from a firing point.

Now I am well aware that it is basically universally played that the model still suffers the wound, but I was wondering how this was explained by the RAW since I believe in no other case can a model embarked in a transport suffer a wound while embarked.

The model still suffers the wound. There is no rule saying models inside a transport cannot be killed. The rule is no model inside a transport may be targeted by enemy fire.

Thanks for quick response. Was just an idle curiosity on my part, as I've never actually fielded a plasma weapon.

Some people think plasma weapons are a god send. Others think they are a nightmare. Ive only rolled a gets hot maybe 4 times in my life, and never actually failed.
Tho on the flipside, my brother has had sgts with PP just take it hard lol

Last game I played, my first shooting phase, Plasma Cannon rolled a one. then another one. Plasma Gun, rolled a one, then a two.

All about luck.

I use 4 plasma guns in a CCS riding a Chimera.

Best situation I've ever had was only 2 died over 6 turns (though they killed about a dozen SM and popped a rhino)
Most games one dies each turn (which I think it statistically fair, since they are all firing two shots and only have a 5+ save)
Worst situation was all four dying in the first turn of rapid firing (to be fair, they did still kill half a squad of SM)

I still run them, but only because they generally earn back their points. If I had a 3+ SM save I wouldn't think twice about taking them.

I've lost 4 guys in one turn to plasma, but I play IG. I've actually had a game where I lost more guys to plasma overheats than to enemy action...................

I don't wanna make a new thread, as it would fill up just too much.
This question set my mind: If models die to Gets Hot! (like 3 Veterans out of 10) do they have to take a Morale test?

Space Marines: 10/2/5

I was originally going to say they should not have to as you make morale tests when suffering wounds caused by being shot at, but after reading the wording on the morale check portion of the BRB I am going to change that to yes.

The rule states "a unit losing 25% or more of its models during a single phase, or else it will fall back."

So assuming that your unit had 4 members in it and your figured died from Gets Hot, then the unit will have fullfilled the 25% or more requirement in making the morale check. It does not state how these wounds must occur, and I think that is the key to having to take this morale check.

Edit: My post is with the stipulation that the above post is talking about a unit that is not in a vehicle. If they are in a vehicle such as Gwar!'s example below, then I would agree that the unit would not be able to fall back.

They take a Morale test, but cannot fall back because they are embarked.

This is something interesting, if I can continue the thread: what if the squad had 7 left (orginally 10) and lost 3 to Plasma misfires, failed their morale check, but was embarked? They are embarked, so cannot fall back, but they can't regroup. Can they disembark? Are they scoring since they aren't falling back, even though they may be "Falling Back"?

Atleast they can still shoot, heh.

Maybe make a own thread of it? Cause that's a very hard question and is a own topic IMO. I was planning to steal the honour and make a topic of that but thought that you may want to have the honour.
IMO they can't do anything else than shoot. Because the Rhino etc. can't move forward (or in any direction?). But I really don't know if they can disembark

Can you roll a 1 with a plasma cannon? Is it not scatter dice? How does that work (I have never used plasma cannons)

I don't see any reason why an embarked unit cannot fall back. Rules quote?

The rules for falling back do not say they MUST disembark. In fact, it does not cover it at all. Thus, disembarking would be a voluntary action, and you may only disembark voluntarily in the movement phase.

If you are losing models to rapid firing plasma I found that one way to mitigate that is to fire each plasma guy separately. You may roll two ones for the same guy rather than 2 ones that will be alocated to the squad. This way if the one guy that rolls 2 gets hot 1s, fails, you only lose one instead of two.

1) All firing is Simultaneous
2) You should be rolling each Gets Hot! Weapon in a squad "separately" anyway, as overheats only affect the specific model. This is ESPECIALLY important if the plasma wielding models have differing other wargear.

In my group we just use different colored dice for the plasma shots and everything is rolled together.

I sure hope you mean "for each plasma weapon and each colour is linked to a specific model before rolling."

I don't think we've ever had more than one plasma gun in a squad. Devastators will have more than one plasma cannon, but those are rolled individually because of scatter.

I had just been rolling all my rapid fire CCS plasma shots together, rolling saves for each 1 I would inevitably roll, and removing models as necessary. I then realized that I was possibly killing off more models than I should have since one unlucky guy could've been rolling both 1s.

Not a huge benefit, but since you're actually supposed to annotate each model's plasma firing separately anyway, it's nice to think positively!
