So, I started posting bits of this project on my fantasy p&m blog. But now that I'm almost done assembling the Snakebite settlement, I think it's time to start a 40K blog.

There is background info for the trukk stop in the appropriate section. This is going to be more of a terrain blog, for a while at least. I'm not planning much as for kustomizin the troops, but some of the HQ and vehicles will definitely get a personal touch.

There are three tribes that make up the trukk stop: Snakebites, Death Skulls, and Blood Axes. The Snakebites have a settlement and a diner. The Death Skulls have a towing company. The Blood Axes run a large mekshop and gas station.

Here is the general layout:

It's meant to be the last stop on the road to an active battle ground. The settlement is off the lower edge of the image (as in: not pictured).

Here is a shot of some of the buildings:

This is the first ork house I made and the smoke stacks for the mekshop.

I'm very happy with how these three buildings are coming along. I have quite a few more buildings put together already, but I haven't had a chance to get a picture of them yet.

I have the mek shop started, but I'm not as satisfied with how it's looking as I am with the settlement. I may move onto the Towing yard before continuing with the mekshop.

Let me know what you think so far. I'll have some more pics up soon.

Looks great soo far, needs some orky glyphs and tropy racks and its gonna look great!

Looking good so far. I think you should consider adding a diner.

Here are a couple shots of all the buildings I've got put together. (sorry for the poor light quality... it's late here)

Some still need glue, and plenty need wood work... at least one still needs windows and a door. There will be balconies on most of the taller buildings.

@brother_zach: Yeah, it doesn't look too orky just yet. I got some glyph plates with a trukk I picked up, and there'll be a snake motif around the outer wall, as well as in smaller details.

@Owain: The dinner's next. I've got an idea for the layout: a giant snake. Long, family style tables set up so you weave back and forth to move through the diner. Hope I can pull it off.

Very cool start. I'd digging the Orky theme from this. It definitely is giving me some ideas.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

These buildings would fit so well with my "Valkyrie Down!" scenario set in the ork town of Morkadishu.

Seriously great, and quick aswell.

I might be the only one noticing, but wouldn't evil suns work way better as a mekshop, I mean the're the kings of speed.
Just a suggestion though.

Thanks for all the comments

@maart3n: The evil suns certainly are the kings of speed, but why, as rich as they are, would they want to settle down at this side of the road pit stop? I'm going to be adding a few biker gangs to my collection after towing company is build (maybe after the mekshop is finished too). These will be Evil suns and Goff mostly. I chose the blood axes for the mekshop because I wanted to have some non-ork "biker gangs" too. Some IG got stuck behind the enemy lines and need to gas up before making the long awl across the battle field, and I'm planning a skooter/moped (weedy bikers) kroot squad o be working for the mek... pulse rifle anyone?

@Steelmage99: How is Morkadishu coming? I loved your background for it. If you need help with making the buildings I can email you the template I'm using. It makes things go much faster, but I'm having trouble with over population. I'm running out of room on my desk, but I keep making buildings. I'm almost done... just 3 more

Thanks again for posting.

You're confusing Evil suns and Bad moons here, the bad moons are the rich and yellow ones while evil suns are the red 'ones that go fasta.

Still, it's your piece, but think about it. It would make sense to have bad moons building, and maybe just having a single go befor giving it back.

Oh yeah...

Well, besides the rich part- and the mekshop does more than vehicles. Maybe the Death Skulls will get an Evil Suns mek to fix up their tow trukks and other looted wheels.

Thanks for setting me straight as for the clans, and keep the suggestions coming.

How does an Evil Sunz gas station sound? I was going to put the Blood Axe komandos in charge of the fuel depot, but an Evil Sunz chemist might be more apt at making faster fuel... `,:~) what do you think?

Then the only clanz that aren't represented at the trukk stop are the Goff and Bad Moon clans, which would be easy to make a biker gang or some sort of convoy for.

The convoy being the Bad Moons, while the Goff roar through town on their bikes. I was thinking about making a mobile home/camper sort of battle wagon for a couple of Bad Moon boys that I have, from the 80's.

First off, great work! It's always nice to seem some cool and original terrain being made. Bad Moonz should run some kind of pawn shop/ammo dump IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments. I like the Bad Moons shop, maybe they'll open a ork-emporium. The latest in big box fashion, weaponry, and vehicle upgrades. And the Evil Sunz gas station.
Thanks!

I'm almost done with the Snakebite settlement- assembling the buildings that is. I've got maybe two more buildings to cut out, besides the boss' house. Then there'll be the wood work for those and a few others.

I'll post more pictures when they're all there. I picked up some boar minis from Bitz Barn that just arrived today, so I'll have a bit of a herd going by then too... not that they'll be painted, necessarily.

Oh, yeah. And I'm looking forward to playing some skirmish games with this terrain too. Should be fun!

Ok, not much of an update. I was captivated by the urge to rearrange my room over the weekend. So my ability to take, and then put pictures on to the Internets was rather impaired.

As it stands, the dust has almost cleared...

I did start work on the Snakebite Boss' house, which turned out to be three buildings. The boss' house (his building of the three) is 6" tall and 8" long. His nobs buildings are 4" tall and 5" long. There is a large (large enough for the AoBR warboss to pass through with only the top of his bosspole teeth cut off) boar mouth. I still need to make tusks for either side of it.

I'm pretty happy with the way it's coming out. I still have a few buildings to finish assembling and at least one to cut out.

I'll have some pictures for you on Wednesday. I'll be sorting through the boyz I have to tally how many snakebites. There will be 12 deathskulls to go in the one trukk I have. Some of the boyz will get converted into kommandos to prepare for the Big Meks arrival.

Thanks for reading.

As it turns out, I'll be working tomorrow... so I probably wont get too much done on the trukk stop. :(

But just to show you I'm still hard at work, here is a shot of all the buildings that have their wood work done. It's pretty close to the final arrangement, too. Just a bit squished, so they can all fit on the surface. Also, that one build doesn't go on top of the other.

And here's a shot of the Boss' house so far. Obviously WIP, I just wanted to give you an idea of it's size. There will be a grand staircase in the back leading to a deck which overlooks the main courtyard of the settlement. I'll take some better pics when I get a chance.

Last, and probably least, my first kommando conversion:

I didn't do much to him. Bit I wanted to keep him simple. The idea is he is there to scout out the area for the mek, so I wanted him to almost fit in.

I've also divided my boyz into clans. There are ten Death Skulls (not including the trukk driver and gunner), two of which are nobs. I know you can only run one nob in a mob, so one of them is a counts as boy or the Death Skull boss for now. They got all the helmet heads (save for the nob head with the huge horns on the helmet). The other three nobs and eleven boys are Snakebites.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks for reading.

Nice, I like the megalomaniacal look of the orky palace; maybe you should add a throne on top or some kind of balcony so he can adress his underlings and shoot grots?

I would consider adding a few more possible entry points to the palace though, otherwise it will be a very restricting piece of terrain

Very nice! i like that you are so engaged in this.
Really cool project, would like to see watchtowers for the encampment,
I'm suggesting a proper battleboard later for the trukk stop to be placed on, 48x48 inches maybe? bigger would look cool too, maybe with a highway on it?

Cheers

Oh, he's getting a throne. I thought about putting it on top, but I liked the idea of a dark, dingy throne room better. Also, the thrown will e opposite the front door, so he can more easily charge through the courtyard and into battle.

The way it's shown in the first picture, it's facing away from the settlement. Here is a pic from the back of the building, which is the side that overlooks the main courtyard of the settlement.

The lower doorways will have stairs leading up to a large porch that has an additional stair case going up through the larger doorway.

His throne is going to be under the larger staircase... which sounds less than kingly, but the throne is going to be a giant snake head, using the stairs as the top of the mouth. I'm going to put some holes in the stairs too, to show how he feels about gits walking over his head.

The upstairs will be his sleeping quarters. You can barely see the top of the triangle windows on either side of the building. I am thinking about putting small platforms for his most trusted grots to fire down at gits.

I'm going to make large tusks to stand just outside the main entrance (where the boars are coming out in the previous pic). So the boss' house is requiring the most sculpting so far.

Quite impressive keep up the good work. I plan on ripping...copying...stealing.....adapting yeah adapting your idea's.

@LiveforFun666: I have a stash of Masonite boards. They're about 1'x1'. I'mm going to try and make the mek shop small enough to fit on one, but what I have for it so far looks way too small. I need to do a little more work on it before I post any pics. As it stands it just looks like and X-Files box set and a cellphone box next to each other... not much to looks at.

I don't have a lot of room, so any "table" I make will have to be small sections or tiles that fit together. I'm still figuring out the best wa to store them too, once their on the Masonite. The settlement while be two sections, at least. I'd rather it be one piece, but... as I said above, storage is very much on my mind. I also want the buildings to be removable individually, as I plan on a lot of interior detail... some might say a stupid/crazy amount of detail. But this is my creative outlet for the time, so phooey to them

As for the watch tower, the rooftops will act as such. Some of them already have defensive walls. I'll be working on the rooftops more, once I have all the buildings glued together. I'm planning on two or three more, after the boss' house, to complete the main courtyard. Then, of course, there is the boar pen to figure out. Looking at the oars running through the boss' main entrance, I like the idea of having them rush out as a first offense against incoming fighters. CC fighters, though. A bunch of boars wouldn't do much to a fire base that was 20" away.

@Frenzied Potato: Go right ahead. Let me know which ones, though... and show me pictures! I want to see where you take it.

@CommissarKhaine: Thanks for the sinister words As for the lack of ways to get in and out of the settlement, let alone the boss' house; It's meant to be an isolationist settlement. I don't really have any fluff for why they started building here. Maybe it was just a good place to find a righteous fight or some construction-centric odd boy just started building and this is what he, and his grots, made.

There are going to be a ton of grots running around this place. The boss will probably look some what like a runtherd. That is, he was a runtherd and became the boss when the rest of the tribe left to answer their wanderlust. And, to that extent, the more numerous aspect of the this Snakebite tribe will be held in reserve for gaming proposes... I think.

The settlement isn't the most powerful aspect of the trukk stop either. This is because the toughest members left to roam the surrounding area. I haven't decided what the area is going to look like yet. If anyone has a suggestion, let me know. There are boars and a freeway. That's it as far as the local terrain indicators go. So there should be a forest near by, but it might be far enough away that I won't have to make it for a table. Also, because of the boars, it shouldn't be an arid desert. But the adobe houses suggest desert, so, maybe it's like a spaghetti western: lots of sand and big patches of tough plant life. Still, though, I'm taking suggestions.

I think I'll make the Super Grots using some night goblins. Do them up like jawas... not that that hasn't been done. It just occured to me that jawas would be perfect grots for a mek.

Once I've got the woodwork on the boss' house doen, I may take a brake from terrain and focus on painting some boyz. More, a break from assembling. The Black Reach boyz are so easy that way.

How does the boss get to da fight quickly then if there's no exit?
Answer: he makes an exit. Add an ork-shaped hole in the walls

On a more serious note: the buildings look a bit like south-american dwellings (mostly found in mountainous regions). A Mesa would be a logical place to settle, and it would allow for some nasty plant- and wildlife nearby. At the rate orks deforest, a fair bit of the surroundings could be desert/barren/scorched as well, allowing for some open space to do battle.

what materials did you use to make the buildings?
how did you make the stairs?
