Very interesting design - it actually reminds me somewhat of the favela levels from Modern Warfare 2. I'm inspired to do something similar for the slums of an Imperial city!

They are pretty easy to make. I used foam core for the walls and balsa wood for the stairs. An easy fix for setting models on the stairs is to make an inverted staircase... with a level top. So, make a platform big enough for the model to stand on, then build the stairs, upside down, under the platform. I've seen it done for hills, as wedges.

They would work great for imperial slums, too. Just change the details a bit, like not carving off the edges.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, some models would have to treat the stairs like difficult terrain, specifically models with larger bases. The warboss, for instance, couldn't get to most of the second floors, let alone into the building, without damaging the structure or squeezing through (which is not very boss like).

I'm working on some concepts for the drops. One idea is to have the drops at the back entrance, with a bridge over it. So the road to the settlement, from the freeway, goes over it. That way, any guests from the trukk stop have to cross the drops to get to the settlement. That is, if they are obeying the rules of the road (which are so important in 40K ).

The big problem I have with the drops is the table surface. It's a pit of filth and fungus. If I don't have any room to dig, how am I going to make a pit? The only answer is to build up an inclined perimeter.

That's the only answer if I give in to the table surface. I could make a special "tile" for the drops that has a hole in it, with the drops hanging though. Then the risk is having the drops pop up out of the board if it gets set down wrong.

These are some of the reasons I like the bridge over the drops idea. The drops proper on one side of the bridge and a squig pen on the other, with a sewage pipe connecting the two. Though, it strikes me as improper to have the settlement's drops outside of it's confines. So, I think I will make the bridged drops to go more with the diner. On the other hand, more current descriptions of the drops seem to have it as a place most avoided, while the older fluff suggests it is more of a town square fixture.

So, I think I will have to devise a suitable solution for the drops within the settlement... How deep do you think it should be? And what are peoples opinions about where the drops would be in town, is it a prominent fixture or something out of the way? Depending on popular opinion, I might just do the bridge idea.

Thanks for all the comments.

Oh most definantly. Right now I am in suspense to what your gonna use as the throne (ie big leada's boss buildin) and the squig pens in particular.

@Travis: Never thought of it... I am planning a small contingent of 'umie rogue traders, though, and a unit of Kroots, mounted on smaller bikes than the standard GW hog. Mopeds, skooters, and dirt bikes, made by the big mek for the kroots.

The throne goes in the mouth. The stairs leading up to the second floor will make the roof of the mouth.

The mountainous region wins for setting. Big hills/mountains with lush forest and a deserty bit surrounding the settlement. Thanks for the tip on deforestation Khaine. The trukk stop will be in a lower area, in between mountains. The freeway, in that case, will have a few more curves than I had planned... I was thinking a straight freeway would have been odd... meh.

This way, the road to the settlement can be a bit more secluded too.

This weekend... that is, sunday and monday, I should have time to finish assembling the buildings. I'm looking forward to getting all the wood work on the boss' house. The snake head will be a test of my sculpting ability. I might try to find a toy snake that will work if I muk it up too much.

So, now you see where the throne is going, Frenzied Potato.

Just a bit of paint. I got shanghaied up to Mendocino County over the weekend, so I didn't get anything done on the hobby. Also, it wiped me out, so not much on my next day off, either. I did do a little painting, though...

The Dungers got primed and their fur has been base coated. The one got his armour base coated, but I'm not sure how to do metal. So that is, if nothing else, a note that his armour is gonna be metal painted yellow.

And here's their keeper... for now. This guy had a pet squig, then his arm fell off... after I dropped him. So now he's got the whip and grot catcher. Still, just blocking colors so far.

I blocked in a couple grots, too. They'll make it into the next post.

That's all for now. Expect more painting updates before you see any more houses. I need a brake.

Oh! I did manage to pick up a small motor-home town from Burgerking, second hand. It's going to be a buggie or a trukk for the Bad Moons... of maybe it'll turn into a foreman's office or something.

To speed up the process, might I suggest Krylon's "Make it Stone" line in Sandstone?

It's excellent textured spraypaint. You'll probably want to have your main colour ready to paint over it though - the colour of the spray is a little... crappy.

Now there's an interesting idea for a throne... Will it be a ginat snake the boss throttled to death, or will it be hewn from stone?

Thanks for the tip, Metallifan. That will make my job much quicker.

As for the throne, I was thinking stone originally. But since they'll be close to the jungle... jungle-ish area anyway, I think it would be awesome for it to be a snake the boss killed. That could even be why there is a settlement there: They set up dwellings because it was taking too long to eat the snake. So they build houses around it's body, where they were eating.

No prob mate. When spraying it, just be sure to give it two coats if you want a strong textured effect. For some reason the texture seems to sink a bit when it's dry, so you'll probably want to do a second coat once the first one sets so that you get a really grainy stucco look.

In terms of fluff, you could say that the Warboss and his boyz killed the snake, and then the Warboss built his house around the Snake's head to protect "Dem' big Snake teef" that are making him rich. Eventually, other clans heard about the town of "Bigtoof", and decided to settle in for a cut of the profits generated by the raiding town.

Also: The Evil Sunz need a "Toofhouse" (Aka: A very Orky Bank)

Brilliant. A town is born.

The Snakebites kill the biggest snake they have ever seen. The boss and weird boyz drinks it's venom. The boss has his boyz and grots build his house around the head ("to protect "Dem' big Snake teef"), and the rest of the boyz and runtherds and so on build around their piece of the snake. Legend of the huge teef gets out, do to the proximity of a waaagh highway, and the Deff Skull lootaz show up and put down roots, looking for their cut of da teef. Now there is an opportunity to exploit a couple of landmark films... namely Fist full of dollars, and it's Japanese counterpart. (I can't remember which one it is: Yojimbo or Sanjiro?)

Enter a Big Mek? no- Enter a kommado under the employ of the big mek. The kommando destabilizes the two factions and the big mek moves in. Maybe before, maybe after, the other clans gain a foothold in the small town of Bigtoof.

Metallifan, thank you.

ps: would it be the evil sunz or the bad moons who have a bank? which one is suppose to have more teef? bad moonz, I thought.

No prob. PM me if you want to actively work on expanding the fluff further for your town. Maybe even getting together a campaign that replays it's founding (Post snake death, obviously, as fighting with a venomous snake is a terrible idea)

ps: would it be the evil sunz or the bad moons who have a bank? which one is suppose to have more teef? bad moonz, I thought.

Dun' Matter. You could have one running "Da First Nashunal Bank of Teef" and the other running "Da' Toofhouse", and create fluff wherein the rivalry between the two bank chains has actually escalated into instances of armed combat and small skirmishes in the city as each one tries "ter' stockpile da' most teef!"

Or, you could have one controlling the bank(s) and the other could control the city's "Chamber of Kommerce", which would have to be a suitably Orky-Government looking building... Whatever an Ork Government structure would look like... Probably bigger and it might have some fancy gibbinz on it. Like statues of Gork and Mork or something

I haven't done much work on the town, but the list of assembled orks is growing. I've got two Lootas put together. One Burna, but I don't want to use the big tanks on him on account of him being a kommando. And I started working on my counts as Snikrot... He still needs a head and left arm. Also got put the mek from the Lootas box together, without the back banner. I want to use that somewhere else.

Also, I've been painting. So far, everyone that I haven't just assembled has been primed and the skin has it's base coat. The first kommando has some color on his shirt too.

I did get a little done, as far as buildings go. I make a small power plant and the beginning of a large force field generate/teleporter thing. I'll get pics up pretty soon. In the meantime, here is a pic of Bigtoof, as it stands... bird's eye view:

I was trying to figure out the next batch of buildings to do. I want to finish cutting them out, at least. I may need to redo one or two of the buildings to make the pathway more to my liking, but it's very close. Looking at it last night, I forgot about having the boar up on the roof. So, I'll have to set it up again tonight and look at it with that in mind.

I've been spending my time putting the bits from the lootaz/burnas box to use. I cut out the four walls for the Towing Company garage and the Big Mek's shop, nothing photo worthy. Also, I still don't have my camera back, so I took this pic with my phone... so I know the pic is lousy. I still wanted to through the shot up because I mentioned the power generator in my last post (I think). Anyhoo, here it is next to a KFF generator. Both still WIP, as you can see. But that's how they'll look for the most part.

er- the KFF is just the twirling bit. I still have lots of work to do on the body of the machine (not pictured).

Finally a good use for light bulb bits . I think it's definitely a great start, now all it needs is detailing!

One question though: is the bond between the light bulbs and the plastic solid enough? I've had bad experiences glueing metal to plastic without sanding it a bit first, and it would be a shame if the bits fell off after painting...

It's been a while since I posted anything on this thread. That's because I haven't done as much work on my 40K army as on my Night Goblin army. Also, less time to work on either.

I did started working on my Big Mek's Battle Wagon, though. I had a chance to pick up some sheet styrene, or plasticard as some might know it. Anyhow, I also happened to find (after hours and hours of searching) an excellent paper cut out diagram for a toy DAF truck. I promptly downloaded it and re-sized it to scale, and this is what I got... so far:

There's another image of the front in my gallery. Also, that is the trukk driver in there. I'll be building the inside like a fool... with tweezers. I already glued all the sides together. If I get really frustrated I can just rip the back off. I'm pretty excited about how it's coming out, but I'm having trouble thinking of details for the sides. I want to cut some doors out, I guess I'll start there. Unfortunately, I'm not sure when my next chance will come. :(

I've done a bit more work on the cab. Styrene sheets are a lot of fun, you can do so much with it.

Anyhoo, here's some pics:

The door on the side opens, but it's the only one. And there is a windshield that will me glued in after painting.

Here's a shot with the roof on. The hatch doesn't open, much to my chagrin. That hinge was working before I put all that glue on it!

And here is the first pic of Wortgob Gutznik, the biggest mek in Bigtoof.

He's an AoBR nob, with a hair cut. This is just the beginning for him! He'll be getting a rokkit-kombi weapon, but I need some more bits first. I'm gonna give him some facial hair too.
