More excited by these than I thought I'd be, since I've been completely and wholly underwhelmed by 6th edition. Might just redo my deathwing with those models if I can get em cheap enough 2nd hand, I'll have to see how easy the sergeant shoulder wings are to remove. Super surprised they went so very, very DA with them, makes them impossible to use as anything but DA or a successor. Reminds me of the BA terminators from Space Hulk, both in that they have such dynamic posing and because of the superb detail they managed to shove into the plastics. Chaos are pretty cool too, I like the cultists more than most people seem to and the chosen are simply fantastic. They do appear to be larger than normal, but a quick side-by-side in photoshop (after resizing the base to be equal) showed that it's just the poses and the spikes, they're the same size as the DA tacticals.

Anybody know why the Chaplain is marked limited edition, and what he will be available from? He appears to be listed on the right of the white dwarf scan (it's cut off), but wouldn't ALL of these figs be limited edition and exclusive to the box set? Or do they plan on releasing the rest of these as seperate boxes, unlike the figs in past starters?

I guess it's just a cynical marketing ploy. AIUI, they will be selling first "limited edition boxes" with the Chaplain, and then "regular" version once the "limited" runs out. So what will happen is that people who otherwise might be on the fence will rush to buy the limited edition to get the Chaplain.

Given that their current marketing model is built around the idea that if you see something more than 5 minutes before you are able to hand over cash for it you'll lose interest... GW certainly don't seem to think so, no.

On the set... Colour me impressed with these. For starter set plastics, they're damn impressive. GW showed what was possible with clip-together plastics with the Space Hulk release... it's nice to see that finally carry over into the core range.

Very much digging that Dreadnought. Bodes well for the Chaos re-do...

Good to know. Thankfully I'm really not too impressed with the fig, it's too busy and the front tabard looks really off but would have probably used it anyways since why not? With all the kickstarters and warmachine projects and infinity and mantic/defiance games stuff coming out I've got too many other things on my table to be picking these up day one, and again I'll probably wait till they start showing up on the ebay bitz sellers and skipping the chaplain entirely then. GWs marketing ploy of showing off stuff only a few days ahead of time may work with the kiddies, but it fails completely when my funds are already devoted to other figs I like just as much for games I'll probably play more. There's just too much other good stuff on the market to give 40k any kind of priority anymore. Sad to see the game relegated to "maybe when I get around to it" status.

But again, the rest looks pretty top notch as you would expect from GW plastics in recent years. Even the restic can't compete with that kind of detail, and I can actually use my plastic glue on these! How novel!

Paint the wings black and I can quite comfortably add them to my Blood Ravens.

Not quite sure what to do with the chaos lot though... Something about the traitor blood ravens maybe?

Right, I'm thinking that the Hellbrute would make an excellent addition to my Death-Guard army and the rest of the Chaos stuff will be painted up as allied Word Bearers. I'm glad that Chaos are getting the models they deserve.

I'm going to say undivided, simply because of the lack of khorne iconography on the model. now that's not to say the new rule book won't allow us to mark them if we want.

Most people think that the current way that characters work is an unintended consequence of the table used in the back of the rulebook and will be FAQ'd. This was acknowledged by design staff in interviews.

Starter sets just keep getting better and better.

I started the game at the beginning of 3rd edition. On the plus side, that starter came with a full-sized rulebook. But only a handful of minis on each side. Something like 10 marines, a land speeder and 20 dark eldar. No variety.

I was blown away by the AoBR box. Tons of models, high quality sculpts, good variety. Whole starter armies.

And now Dark Vengeance is shaping up to improve upon the starter box once again! I just hope these awesomely detailed models don't make my older Chaos look too silly by comparison!

Yet another giant walker sprung from nowhere that ensures the Dreadnought's continued slide into obscurity.

The dreadnoughts used to be the gak when it came to walkers: cool fluff, big stompy heroes, revered, etc. Now they are gun platforms for quad autocannons and little more...

Starter set has the following doubles:
Deathwing Terminatir with bolter and power fist (2x)
Ravenwing Biker (same body, two sets of arms)
Chosen with Boltgun (2x)
At least 3 Space Marines with boltgun (2x each)
Heavy Weapon Cultist (one body, 2 different sets of arms)
4 Cultists with autoguns (2 each, 2 of them just mirrored with minor differences)
4 Cultists with autopistols (2 each, 2 of them just mirrored with minor differences)

And for the record: Hastings was the first to get the contents of the starter box right, about 7 months before the release (29th January). Including details like Space Marines having sculpted iconography.

Blood of Kittens was less specific, but what they said was also correct (March 2011):
"By the end of the next Olympics we will treated to 6th ed Warhammer 40k
Now that is something that people that follow GW trends have suspected for awhile. So really that is not that earth shattering. What makes 6thed potentially earth shattering is the version of AoBR we will get. For the first time ever neither Xenos, the Warriors of Roboute Guilliman, or the Sledgehammer of the Emperor will be chosen to fill the starter box.

What that means well all of us will have to wait to find out…

You are joking, right?
4 cultist doubles with autoguns -> 8 plus heavy plus boss
4 cultist doubles with autopistols -> plus heavy plus boss (both heavies sharing the same body)
Makes 20 cultists.

The sculpts are really nice especially the chaos cultists.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.
