Arakasi: Yeeeeeesssssss! New pic with the minis in focus this time!I also added a mix as suggested by you and MajorTom, and I quite like the effect, I'll probably do a bunch like that!

Anung Un Rama: it's not a corpse, it's a dying ork . You know, the only thing better then a dead ork ... The last grot is indeed my warboss , and if you don't feel he's menacing enough, I feel you might not quite appreciate his size. Have a look at this pic:

You can insert funny quotes for the guardsman about... wait for it... now

Seriously though, the warboss is the size of a killa kan and pointing at his next target with a big honking (articulated ) powerklaw, what would you do to make it more menacing?

monkeytroll: Thanks! I felt the bosspole would add some story to the model. And bragging rights, hopefully . I agree about the thraka green being too green, but the mix I tried is something nice I think, but judge for yourself!

kharn-the-betrayer: Thank you!

Now, onto a new colour comparison shot, without blurry parts this time:

The one on the left has no wash at all, the second one a thraka green wash, the third the thraka green (which is out but included for completeness), and finally the thinned down sepia. I'm thinking I'll alter between the three options remaining, with a big portion getting the wash mix since I really like the effect, even if it is a lot darker then the others.

I had not fully appreciated the size of your warboss before this CK... love him even more now (hadn't thought that was possible). Combination of his massive size, ostentatious coloring and tweaked head position is just wayyyy over-the-top (in a totally great way)!

Good on ya!

Wow, I don't know how I missed that pic of the nob getting crushed. That's great. I like the conversions on the grots too. They came out spot on. Also the paint job is great. I like your use of purple.

Nice! I like the color variations!

Trust me, try a 1:1:1 water, yellow ink and green wash... It would be pretty and make the skin very glowy on the ones you use it on!

Great stuff man, I am very happy that you have enjoyed some of my suggestions, it is rewarding to see the great work you produce!

Gitsplitta: Wow, thanks . As for the warboss' size: I always find it deceptive in a pic without some kind of reference. Most manufactureres do it the other way around of course, and make stuff look bigger . I feel the warboss is one of those models were everything came together just right, allowing for a nice centrepice for the grots.

The Good Green: Glad you like it all! The purple is a nice spot colour and adds some variation. Also, it goes well with green . The nob gettign crushed got a pic abunch of pages back when I first built him, but it's easy to misss tuff at the rate all the p&m blogs get updated these days - people have too much time!

MajorTom11: Thanks, and I added a pic with your suggestion. I kinda forgot about it while experimenting .

Great stuff man, I am very happy that you have enjoyed some of my suggestions, it is rewarding to see the great work you produce!

This is the main strength of dakka IMO; a bunch of people who are all very constructive and who'll offer good advice. I've been growing a lot as a painter and modeller since joining dakka, and I feel it has alot to do with the community. So, a big thank you to all the people who've helped out and supported the little guys!

Arakasi: I like that a lot as well! Just had to add one more option to complicate things!

So piccie with the Major's wash idea:

The guy holding the swor dup was done with the 1:1:1 water, sepia and thraka wash. he's a bit more subtle then the undiluted version, but I like it as well. One more option to add some variation - guess I'll have to go back to my old grots as well now .

The 1:1:1 guys looks best - though I wonder if it is because his base skin was done better?

Try adding some Gloss Varnish to that mix - should give you some more control over where it goes - and reapply to some of the depressions... (since learning this trick at the Tank Masterclass I haven't painted anything without it!)

risewiththefallen: Thanks! As for painting; it's practice, really. You'll find dakka a very giving community; if you want some advice or have trouble with something, put up a post ansd I'm sure you'll get some good advice. I know it worked out for me!
Also ur walker looks like a atat from starwars

Thanks. he's quite a few pages back though, did you sift through all of those? In that case, kudos on the persistence!

Arakasi: I like the undiluted version a lot, but that's just personal preference - like some people like orange . All the grot shere were from the same batch, so I'm guessing their skin was as close to the same skill level as you can get. I'll give the gloss varnish a try thougf, you really seem to have taken a liking to it, so I guess it's worth a try

Bra'tac: I knew that was going to happen the moment I took the pic. thanks for the support!

Anung Un Rama: a bit? As fort the gun: you said the same thing when I first showed him. Since it's a big shoota with bitz added, I'm figuring it's plenty big enough - it keeps thing in scale

Now, no piccies today, but I do have some more fluff:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Arbiter Corun was dumbfounded. The Gnosis IV base had never suffered an incursion before, and the sporadic escape attempts of the prisoners had always been thwarted by the extensive security measures. The base’s location in the mountain range made an undetected assault by air or land virtually impossible. Gnosis had no particular history of chaos or genestealer cults either, and the local population were simple people, loyal to the Emperor and the Adeptus Mechanicus, who provided them with the knight titans to guard their flocks of grox against megadons and other predators. . Besides, only research, guard, or maintenance personnel even knew of these storage facilities. Outsiders never realized just how big the research facility was, only seeing the base levels on the surface and not realizing how deep the facility went into the mountainside.

And yet, he was staring, just now, at the remains of several researchers and two servitors, who had been taken out with consummate ease. Not only had the intruders managed to take out all the personnel they had encountered, but they had also managed to steal several crates containing research materials. The Arbiter didn’t know what they contained, but judging by the dead researchers, it had been something important. Still, that was the least of his worries. First he had to find some kind of explanation for what had happened here, preferably before his Adeptus Mechanicus masters would demand an explanation. Together with his team, he began to search the scene for clues.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
By the time Corun and his team arrived, Scrazza and his band of raiders were running hard, chasing though the ventilation ducts, carrying the crates between them. The team ran hard, excited by the raid and the firefight which - from the surviving grots’ point of view - had gone well. They had killed of the Enemy soldiers and the brainboyz, looting the stuff, and now they were making good their escape.

Most of the Enemy had either fled the hallways, or had converged on the place of the raid. The wily grot and his fellow raiders exited the hallway, aiming for the maintenance areas and the tunnel that led towards the grots’ village. The single servitor team they encountered was no match for the grots, and soon they were descending into the tunnels, anxious to get to safety and to brag to their companions about their feats.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It was Corun’s second-in-command, Arbiter Greif, who found the escape route of the attackers. Apparently, they had used the ventilation tunnels to gain access to the storage halls. Only a small smear of blood and a few loosened magbolts an indication that anyone had come through. Greig had called the invaders ‘agile little buggers’, and Corun was inclined to agree: for an armed and armoured Arbites, the vents were impossible to negotiate. He had called for the backup of two cybermastiffs, hoping their extensive upgrades hadn’t affected the beasts’ sense of smell. The two beasts, lithe and agile despite their enhancements, quickly caught a scent and started following it, Corun following the trail on his auspex. The creatures followed the trail till it came out of the vents again, near the machine halls.

Corun and Grief, moved off towards the vent exit, liberating the mastiffs and allowing them to continue the trail.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Scrazza and his band arrived all excited in the camp, quickly gaining a trail of curious grots following them towards Gitskag’s hut.

The mek had been hard at work at one of the burnas, getting the nozzles aligned properly so they could cut the sheets of scrap metal the grots were using for their huts and buggies.

As the boxes were brought before him and Scrazza explained where they had found them, the old grot’s eyes started to twinkle with anticipation. He used his freshly-fixed burna to cut open one of the crates, revealing a strangely shaped suit: it had two legs and arms alright, but it had a very big head, giving it a very hunched over look. As the mek messed around with it, it’s colours started to shift, becoming one with the ground. While this was interesting funny, the real discovery were the systems reinforcing the strength of whatever might have worn the suit. Gitskag immediately saw the opportunities if combined with the digging tools the grots used to get stuff going fasta. The grot started cuttin’up stuff, and soon the clanking of his tools and the occasional curse clearly indicated the little mekaniak had gone into a creative overdrive.

Meanwhile, Tiqrit’s corpse had been discarded, left at the entrance of the village. To the grots, death was an integral part of life: cave-ins, subterranean creatures, equipment malfunction,.... It was something that happened, a lot. Since they had barely had a chance to build up any culture, they had no idea on how to deal with death. When it came, death was often quick an unexpected, and the cowardly little grots preferred to leave their bad memories behind as quickly as possible. When a grot was killed by a cave-creature, no efforts were done to retrieve the remains. If there was a corpse, it was usually discarded, all the remains looted and the body dumped unceremoniously into the lava flow. In their harsh underworld existence, the dead were easily forgotten in favour of survival.

Scrazza: Glad you like the fluff - and the minis

Gathering Storm: Glad you like the fluff updfate; I wasn't 100% sure about this one, but I guess it came out alright. As for the megagrotz: the regular ones are good bit smaller then the warboss (still bigger then the regular meganobz, definitely bigger then a termie), the warboss was really made to tower over all the others. So yeah, he's pretty intimidating!

moonshine: Thanks! the grots are a very nice set. Even with the single pose models, they offer quite a few modelling opportunities.

Now, piccie time again! I finally finished one kan, the other two are about 40% finished. I'm mainly concentrating on my buggy though, since I need to be able to assemble it for a tourney on March 13th. Piccies as soon as I have something to show!

Now, a fly-around of the killa kan:

I had a spray accident on the rokkit arm, hence the extensive weathering to hide it. For the rest, I'm pretty happy with the model, the ork draws the eye without being overwhelming, and the angry smiley is something that goes nice with the orange. I think I'm goign to add it to more stuff as I go along, it seems to suit the grots.

So, small update: since I have a tourney March 13th and if I want to use my new buggy, I need it assembled. Since I left it separate for paintin', guess what I've been doing?

I've basically done the ronage and a few layer sof skin on the grots; I need to get the engine and the underside done before I can attach the wheels - and I need to paint the wheels as well of course. I think
I'll be doing the armour plates on the wheels orange as well; opinions on that would be welcome!

Also, I need to get some more lootas done by the 13th. I orginally had a bunch of movie character grots, but i'll be upgrading the lootas to one unit of looted servitors and one of looted drones. Piccies soon! (hopefully before March 13th )

As much as I love orange , that might be just a bit much! Boltgun Metal may be a better bet... Then again, my non-RPJ wheels are meant to be Dark Angels Green - same as my Trukks - so who am I to argue?

Yeah, think going with orange wheels might be a bit too "you've been tango'd". Maybe bringing them down to red or up to yellow?

Arakasi: Your opinion on the orange is always a bit suspect . Actiually, it was the red on your trukk wheels that inspired me here; I agree that it might be a bit much though.

sum1thtdiesalot: yeah, you're probably right; I need some contrasts on the buggy.

monkeytroll: Red is for pansy orks, and I hate painting yellow - except for frowneys! Maybe in blue? To be honest though, I'm leaning towards metallic right now.

I'm going to see how far I can get the buggy itself finished, and then decide. I've got a day off on Friday, so painting the wheels metallic and glueing them on should still be feasible

In other news, I've been reworking my lootas. The moviegrots will be interspersed in the regular grot mobs, and I'll be building more looted drones/servitors. Ths will also allow for easier differentiation between the two units.

Here are the three new drones:

And a side shot:

The one on the left is very different from the other four, but I like the concept. And it allows me to add a snotling . If sniper drones weren't so bloody expensive, I'd add more... The middle one is a bit BFG inspired, and I figured he could stand in for a killkrooza if armed differently; I just like how the skull plate from the dread adds a lot of character. The one on the right needs something to grottify him a bit, still on the fence for that one. All need gs, but I'm keeping that for when I've finished the looted servitors as well.

So, what's up next? I nee dto finsih bot the truck and the lootas, so those are high on the list. I'll probably add some colour on a few grots in between as well, so we'll see what happens next, as usual

Well I was thinking of red as 'dark orange' and yellow as 'light orange'

New looted drones are cool, middle one is the killer, but I'm liking the walker one too, as you say, the third needs a bit more grotifying.
