    Update: 10-FEB-2014

Per the announcement on their forum:

The public beta for Wave 2 is over and all of the cards are available for free download from our site! Wave 2 includes models from Rising Powers, Twisting Fates, and Storm of Shadows. So, if you were unable to find rules for your favorite models in the second edition book, they'll be available here.

These PDFs are final, official, and tournament legal. They are only missing the art, and arsenal decks will be on their way for wave 2 later this year. The only models missing from wave 2 are the avatars, and an open beta test for the avatars is starting this week!

    http://wyrd-games.net/community/files/file/53-malifaux-wave-2-cards-low-rez/

    Update: 04-FEB-2014

Justin has released a preview image for the new Arcanist master Ironsides on a blog post:

    http://justindrawingdead.com/?p=264

Also, the Malifaux offical tournament rules, Gaining Grounds 1.0, have been posted and include art for the new Arcanist model The Captain.

    http://wyrd-games.net/community/files/file/52-gaining-grounds/

    Update: 06-JAN-2014

January Malifaux FAQ & Errata are posted as well as downloadable cards for Samael Hopkins and Francisco.

    http://www.malifaux.com/M2eRules.php

    Update: 16-DEC-2013

I'm not sure if everyone is keeping up with the Wave 2 play testing results, but Justin confirmed last week that all of the official rules for the Wave 2 models they've been testing so far will be available for free via PDF on February 10th. The physical cards will be delayed, but at least the official rules will be available. Also, following the release of the PDF they'll start work on the avatar playtesting.

    Per Justin:

Unfortunately, it's looking like it is going to take a bit longer to get all of the art for this wave of models than we had hoped, so we are looking to release arsenal decks in mid 2014 sometime before Gen Con.

The nice thing is that this gives the playtesting process some breathing room. So, here is the plan:

-This round of playtesting will last until the third week in January. January 24th will officially be the last day of this round of playtesting and on that day these forums will be taken down.

-I Will then spend two weeks proofreading, doing some internal playtesting, and generally finishing up any design which these models need.

-On Monday February 10th, we will release free PDFs of all of the models/upgrades from this wave for download. These will be the finalized, set in stone rules. They will be tournament legal. However, these cards will contain no art.

-On Tuesday February 11th, we will launch the next wave of playtesting which will include the avatars for every master and at least one new generic upgrade for each faction.

-This third wave of Playtesting will last until the end of April.

Once all of the art is in, we will send everything off to print and have the wave 2 arsenal decks as soon as possible.

Given the way Wyrd releases their models, that's likely to hit very close to the end of the month, so it might be JUST before Christmas or right after Christmas.

Nathan Caroland commented on the Wyrd forums that it is a large detailed model.

"Fahatsu - that is three figures and quite a bit of work sculpting and mold wise. It's also a Rare 1 figure. It gets sold once to a potential customer - not multiple times as say perhaps Bells or even Death Marshals. Pricing does come into affect for that - it has to."

That's some GW level gouging and price rationale then. How many dark debts boxes is someone going to buy? That's 5 figures there, with multiple part options.

Some people were making similar comments On the Wyrd forum. We don't know how big it is or what it actually looks like, so till that happens I don't want to judge.

Keep in mind something like the Hoffman avatar is one model and is $45. It's really big and detailed. The Rail Golem is $35 and it's a big model too. I would guess that at $40 Fuhatsu will also be pretty big. Being a one model henchman as opposed to a whole crew they probably plan to sell less of them and had to adjust the price to factor that in as well.

I also think all of those models are generally overpriced. The rail golem isnt THAT big. Certainly no bigger than an entire plastic crew box, which has more parts, sculpting, etc. Yan-Lo's box, Misaki's box, etc are all the same price.

The whole "charging more because its rare" is GW pricing model. We screw you on character models. So can we expect to start paying $20 for a single 30mm based mini just because its rare 1? They've never done this before, so it just makes it unsavory now.

Oh well, glad I cleaned house on Miniature Market's 50% off sale. But I do need some Terror Tots. I loathe the metal sculpt.

It makes sense for GW and it makes sense for Wyrd. Plastic models costs are by and large a huge cost when the sculpt is made. You have to estimate how many copies you'll sell, then split that huge upfront cost among models to get a decent return on investment. Metal models by comparison have much more per item cost, so less estimating (aside from burying in risk of materials raising in cost).

Best of luck with that. I'm finally working on moving some of my excess crews/minions, and even in a city the size of Toronto, I've had very few nibbles.

Basically selling off half of the Guild and thus far only a third of what I had for sale has actually gotten snagged up. I'm keeping 3 of my crews, particularly those I enjoyed painting and playing, and waver on a fourth, but while I'm not washing my hands entirely of the company and game, the last time I played was at least a few months ago.

Hopefully getting my Dwarven Forge terrain in and/or Through the Breach (... which is a story unto itself) in eventually will reignite some interest.

I'm in the opposite boat. I'm looking to get MORE Malifaux stuff. If I had any spare cash I'd totally make some offers. I've been wanting to play Malifaux since 2009 and got the rulebook that Christmas and I've had a crew painted since 2011, but with kids, home renovations and work it just hasn't happened yet. I'm hoping that with M2E I will finally get a chance to play.

I'm not aware of any players in my area right now, so I may have to start from scratch, but I'm hopeful at least!

I haven't been able to move a single Malifaux model since Version 2 hit. It absolutely killed our local community, going from maybe 15-20 players down to maybe 4, two of which are Henchmen.

Its a damn shame, the wife and I liked the core of what was already there. A revision could've made it even better, but as it stands, most people just feel gouged.

Oh well... replaced the game budget with Warmachine, and haven't looked back.

I'd imagine losing 2/3 of available models for a time. The roll out isn't really complete yet so unless you have a wave 1 master and crew, you cant even play.

    Personally?

The cut of their jib, and the treatment of the RPG project has really set me off and shown their true colors. They are using the funding of the RPG project for everything else then the RPG.
Thyer treatement of the project is reprehensible and out of line.

    Board? Hostility at every turn.

The changes in 2.0 are lame and done without thought, then the way in which they were jammed down the publics throat, they don't care.

Now all they want to do is shill models and feth the rest.

I have other things that need more time then something that came out strong then fethed the fan base in a faster carbon copy version of GW business antics.

I hate it when companies use the army list/stats to determine pricing.

If they put out a great model at a decent price, many players might buy multiples to convert or try new paint schemes, and non fans might buy them for other projects. But not when they are GW expensive.

Yeah, as the above posts said, Wyrd really treated fans like hot garbage running off all but their most obsessed followers.

Things like running an "open beta" and ignoring or actually being belligerant to folks offering feedback, showed their colors. From there they just went and rebalanced their game in the laziest way ever, that happened to also force players to rebuy books, buy card-packs for all their old models, etc...

Wyrd is a gakky, greedy company, and they happily threw their game and fans under a bus to spike some revenue in the very short run.

So yes, very GW of a practice, but unlike GW their game isn't entrenched enough for anyone to care, and as such, at least locally, they completely killed a growing community.

    Well yes and no.

Yes because they didn't handle new masters and factions in the best way, there was a lot of overlay and different rules. Cards were packed to the brim with text, and it felt very patchwork at times (stuff like the multifaction masters).

No because it was still a fun game to play and wasn't really getting stagnant (mainly due to how gameplay functioned).

EDIT: basic summary - was kinda needed, but they were far too heavy handed in their approach.

Mack was hired as a Lead RPG writer, and as you or anyone else that writes for a living could probably tell that priorities shift, responsibilities change, and projects get moved. When Through the Breach's Kickstarter came out, Mack was touted as being the designer for that, and that alone. He would be on the RPG and it would leave Eric and Justin to be in charge of Malifaux development (either for a new expansion or new edition). As the summer approached, communication with Through the Breach was pretty consistent. up through April. And then we don't hear anything from April 5th until July 3rd. The July 3rd update was this:
Update #38 wrote:We're happy to say that the Train is on track; the artwork, writing, editing, and development are all in motion and coming along beautifully. We invite you once more to join the Through the Breach forum (REDACTED) to hitch a ride on playtesting and keep a weather eye on all the latest as we journey towards the completed RPG!

We'll be putting on steam in the coming weeks and releasing updates on here regularly, so stay tuned. Your conductor, Mack Martin, will have a special treat for you next week!

We got our special treat 2 weeks later, it was a special pdf on the inhabitants of Malifaux (not bad, it was a week late, but no big worries). By this point the Open Beta has been going on for a month and people have pretty much decided if they like the changes or not. My entire play group decided 2nd edition was not for them, I had been getting burned out on Malifaux and it was tough to stay positive about a company that I didn't know if I really wanted to support them as a Henchman, so I resigned and wished them the best of luck. My store has not played Malifaux since mid June because of the changes coming to the game. As a whole we thought the game was fine where it was, and were excited for "Book 5". On July 3rd, the same day that the Wyrd team said the Train is on track, Mack Martin posted this:
Miggidy Mack wrote:I don't think we'll have it at GenCon. At least, I'm not trying to get it there (I was looking at a late august/early sept "off to the printers" date).

If some things really fall into line I...

This is the first sign that backers have that things aren't quite going as smoothly as anticipated. The kickstarter was supposed to be fulfilled in September 2013. This seemed reasonable, and even with Mack's projected date of shipping to the printers in early September, this could mean that fulfillment would start late September.

On August 22nd, a few short days after GenCon, Mack says that on the 4th of September a backers beta will start for Through the Breach. So there goes any chance of people getting their stuff in October. Now communication has 'picked up' for Through the Breach with weekly emails coming out announcing a new set of playtest rules for backers to test. Often times these announcements are days after the playtest files are updated, and half of the week-long period has gone by. The Wyrd team then announces on September 10th that they will delay the fulfillment of Kickstarter rewards to provide a more complete product. Which is great I'd rather get my stuff complete, but I then look back to the quiet summer months wondering wtf they were doing if they weren't working on Through the Breach and it goes back to Malifaux 2nd Edition. Mack was hired to be their lead RPG designer, but he got pulled into M2E development. What this means is that Mack was pulling double duty having to work on both games at the same time, so I'm assuming the quality of 1 project suffered over the quality of the other. With Through the Breach being an expansion product, I assumed Mack's efforts went into M2E and Through the Breach was put on the back burner.

Now as to the communication with M2E, there was some back and forth with a prominent henchman or two and Wyrd didn't handle it all that gracefully, and the henchman in question could have probably done some things differently as well, but I think Wyrd came out a little bit worse in that situation, as there were some quotes from the higher ups in Wyrd that made it seem that they were not willing to take feedback from this former henchman, who had basically been one of the go people when Malifaux was testing things that were still in Alpha for upcoming releases. So sadly, in my experiences Wyrd has been dropping the communication ball recently, and Nathan's comments here are expected (because it doesn't make good business sense to sell a model for 20 dollars when it would mean that you would need to sell double the number of those models to a population of people that may only need half of that number.

Eh... there's a lot of grumbling, you might have heard some of the grumblings if you follow the Gamers Lounge podcast.

But from my view as one of their obsessed followers, M2E changed a lot of the game, and it didn't feel the same. Many of the changes (to me) felt as though they were simply being changed just to change them. Soulstones got flipped turned upside down, they added upgrades (it seems odd to have a character driven game when most people look at characters in games knowing that they have set abilities), and as some people said, if you didn't play a Wave 1 master, you were SoL for several months (Wave 2 beta started within the past 2 weeks). The Arsenal cards (updated stat card packs for M2E) were a good idea, and I was okay with that, but the game different enough from its first edition counterpart that I couldn't just get the updated cards and keep playing Malifaux, I had to get the latest book. Which I understand from a business point of view, but it sucked that I went from my little 15 dollar Rules Manual to a 40 dollar book with no chance to cut into that cost (kind of like how Flames of War allowed people to turn in their 2nd edition books for third edition ones).

It wasn't perfect, but they quite obviously did listen to feedback. Where they didn't listen to feedback was in changing core concepts of the revised game.

The change to 2.0 was the same as always happens when you streamline a game - some like it, and others lament what was lost. I consider both editions to be about equally fun, but 2.0 is a much easier game to teach which is a big advantage.

Not sending out new cards was understandable, but I think Wyrd should have released PDFs of the cards.

Sonnia's got a mask on now (explained in M2E core book)

They've avoided the Injun part for a while now

Agreed, i was surprised how much the Brass Arachnid grew

Yeah, new Myranda makes more sense but does take some getting used to.

Pleased to finally see Pandora/Candy/Kade that I actually like (didn't like any previous incarnation except the pre-Malifaux Pandora).

Nephilim look nice but I've never been a big fan.

Surprised about M&SU including so many models. Since I like new Joss, I'm thinking I'll get the set, then use my 2 double sets of arachnids for two sets of individuals and swarms. Ramos is the only disappointment (always liked the original the best).

Sammael looks way better than the deck image, but not worth getting a whole crew just for him. Also, I miss his hat.

All the Marcus minis look better, still not a huge fan of his rules though, so that one's up in the air...

McMourning's crew makes me soo happyyyy. While I liked old Sebastian more, everyone else looks better and I won't say no to another Canine Remains. I'm hoping McM comes with a different option for his tray, but would be fine either way.

There's fluff about that in the new Malifaux rulebook. It ties up some of the unfinished storylines from Book 3.

Absolutionis wrote:Why is Injun Joss no longer an Indian?

Nothing about that new model, or the colouring they have there prevents him from being an Indian. Modelwise, he doesn't appear to have the few feathers his old model had, but it's not a huge sideshift. The rulebook doesn't call him an indian, but it does refer to his tribal history.

I think he's just over the RPG.

2nd edition certainly plays a lot smoother, quicker and cleaner than 1st, but it is simpler and somewhat more homogenized. 1st edition cards were overflowing with options for even rank and file dudes, plus other stuff off the card you'd frequently forget you could do (like bash as a melee attack). It was an intimidating game to learn.

Comparing cards, the difference is actually more than you'd think, since all abilities are explained on the cards (in 1st edition, many standard abilities were only listed by name). That, along with removing the sometimes convoluted rules situations are HUGE improvements in the game.

It definitely lost some flavour on the cards, but I think the biggest loss is that there isn't master specific schemes. With the new scheme system (huge improvement btw), master and faction specific schemes would have been great (and differences in difficulty would matter less). Faction specific schemes would also have added an extra level of variety in how some of the cross-faction masters play - not an essential thing, but fun nonetheless.

Many of the new boxes are more expensive even when you take the additional models into account. For example, the old Pandora boxed set was $33 and included Pan, Candy, Baby, and 3 sorrows. The new set is $45 and now includes a poltergeist. The metal geist was $9.5. So the new box is more expensive than the old one, even with the additional models and the change to plastic.

I love the new models. The prices are just ridiculous. The new Pandora box is 7 plastic figs for 45. That is GW level crazy.

Making a big plastic model is not that much more than making a small one. We are not working with an expensive medium like metal. Plastic is cheap.

Tooling however, does incur costs relating largely to size, complexity and parts count. And if you're expecting to sell limited numbers, that is a large cost to be amortized over relatively few sales.

You can't just compare the old Pandora set to the new one though. Even ignoring the poltergeist, there's a lot more to the sorrows in the set.

Also, old malifaux sets never increased price for the cost of metal increasing. If the same old Pandora set were released tomorrow, it would probably cost the same as the metal set.

In the end though, it comes down to what you like - I don't really like the new Pandora set compared to the old one (much prefer the old Candy and Kade, consider the rest about equal). But other sets (McMourning, Marcus, Rasputina) clearly have much better looking miniatures in my opinion.

BTW, one thing I'm not sure has been mentioned is that the plastic used in the Wyrd kits is harder than GW plastic.

I'm curious - what skirmish game (10 figs per side or so) with nice looking miniatures has miniatures for sale for less than $7 each on average?

From what I have seen the plastic in the Wyrd kits is hard. GW is also hard, but maybe slightly less so. The Wyrd kits have thin staves and such that are prone to snapping.

Sadly, few skirmish games meet your requirement. Also, the condition for nice looking minis is subjective. I am a fan of Atomic Cafe 1957, which has metals for approximately 3 bucks each. The new Mantic Deadzone stuff looks good.

There are lots of inexpensive minis that you could use in skirmish games.

In any case, I wish Wyrd the best with it. I like the game, both 1.5 and 2.0. Their minis are nice. I just do not like the prices, and thus will use my old minis, or alternative ones.

I'd say that Wyrd's plastic is close to model airplane plastic- harder, more fine detail, a little brittle. Maybe half-way between GW's and the airplane stuff.

Spacelf, I assume large plastics being cheaper is why large plastics exist, not saying that it costs more for them to manufacture, but as consumers we get more for it. Re: the rest, I'd like the prices to be a touch lower, but definitely haven't found them ridiculous. I think they're worth it, but I also spend more time on the hobby than on games, so I feel I get a very good return on quality sculpts over quantity.

Can't post the original copy as Wyrds blogs are down, but here's a repost of Eric Johns (one of the owners of Wyrd) talking about the decision to go to plastic:

    https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10150963002526439&id=77192606438

    Going Plastic

So, if you ever are in a place where you are making metal miniatures as a business, and you have the say those words "we should switch over to plastics" know that you have made a life changing decision. No, not like getting married or having children or even getting accepted to college or that dream job, but it will change things.

So lets go back about a month before those famous words. Here at wyrd central we were sitting and looking at the costs of our minis, the costs of metal, and getting more than a little upset about how the future looked. Straight to the point, the cost of metal has gone up nearly 80% in just the last 2 years, while the cost of our minis had gone up more like 20%, and with metal not slowing down any time soon, we were going to have to push through a rather significant price increase if we were to continue on like we were. Added to that was the fact that we just started producing Avatars which were bigger, heavier, and in all ways more metal than our standard minis. Something had to change!

So we start researching our options. Plastics, Resin, other metals, etc... Luckily we were in a position where we could see what a couple other larger companies had done before us, and largely we wanted to build and improve on the decisions we had seen them make. We knew why they made them, but we hoped we could do better.

So lets look at the options:

Alternate Metals - While we could maintain all our same processes (sculpting, molding, etc...), the price of alternates were going up just as fast, and in general, cheaper metal meant cheaper looking minis...VETO

Resin - Again, resin can be use with all our same processes. We have of course toyed around with Resin in some of our Avatars to keep their costs down, and with fairly satisfactory results, however we avoided any small pieces or complex molds, because of a number of issues that we found cropped up. Many of these issues have been widely publicized in the troubles certain other companies have had with resin minis. Combined with how toxic resin is, how easily it breaks, the fact that the price difference was strangely not that much different from metal... so veto.

PVC based plastic - VERY alluring because in a lot of ways we could still keep a lot of our same process, and while the up front costs are higher than metal we DO get out from under the weight (literally) of metal and those costs... The sticking point is quality here...sadly. Bendy, squishy, doesn't hold the detail well enough. Sadly - Veto

Polystyrene - We have now switched over to all new processes, digital sculpting, plastic injection moulding, etc... SCAREY! It's a big leap of faith to go ALL new when you actually have the old processes figured out. Unfortunately with the previous 3 options veto'd we knew this was our future. On the bright side, we get away from metal! So now comes the challenges:
How do we get these things digitally sculpted when all we've dealt with in the past are physical sculptors... Long story short - we do everything we can to find the best talent (notice I'm not giving away all the details here )

Next: WHAT TYPE of plastic, because it turns out there are a lot of options.

    1) A basic standard level poly. This does the trick, holds detail rather well, is cheap. The downside is that it can melt in really hot cars, can bend and break rather easily

    2) High Impact Poly. This is a step up from the basic. The plastic is denser, the molecules somewhat woven together to resist breaking, slightly higher melting point. All good things, but slightly more expensive

    3) ABS. Now this stuff is even denser, with tightly woven molecules, extra sharp detail, significantly higher melting point, will be VERY hard to break and even when bent, remembers it's original shape. In a lot of ways it has a lot of the strengths of metal, combined with a lot of the advantages of plastic. Drawback - about twice the cost of standard poly

SO? What did we do? We picked ABS, and figured out a way to do it so that we wouldn't have to increase the price to you at all. In fact, not only do we not have to increase the prices now or in the near future, we can now create bigger, more intricate, more impressive pieces without the exponentially increases in cost due to the bulk of metal involved. Additionally it lets us give you a ton of options, alternate heads/arms/weapons without any increase in cost. Win!

If you are thinking (as I did), isn't ABS that stuff my drain pipe is made out of? The answer is yes. It's also the stuff Lego's are made out of, and if you've ever gotten the corner of a lego block in your heal, you KNOW if can hold sharp detail. And just look at that lego logo on the top of each little peg...detail! Of course with a slightly etched surface it's not the perfect reflective feel of lego, so it will hold paint just fine, don't you worry

Anyways, that's a bit about the process of the switch to plastics, and how we ended up at this place and the decisions involved. We knew when we switched, we had to give you all the best we could, in terms of sculpting and materials, as well as price. We're pretty proud of what we've accomplished, and I really hope you all really enjoy the results of our work. I have a desk full of these new models and I seriously can not wait to share them with you all!!

Enjoy! And I look forward to hearing more from all of you what you think.

    Eric

I think the old softer plastic GW kits are standard poly, and their current kits are high impact poly (they certainly have gotten harder plastic over the past decade).

Wyrd posted pics of some more of the assembled translucent/dayglow plastic crews available during the sale.

It would be nice if they could at least take pictures of their other new plastic crews too, instead of just giving us the renders

    Yes, with Guild.

I think he has an upgrade when hired as a Guild master that allows him to take some Resurrectionist models. I think it's called, "Those Aren't Mine." When hired as a Resurrectionist master I think he has an upgrade called "Moonlighting" that allows him to do the same with some guild assets.

Beyond Ten Thunders, here are the wave 1 dual faction masters

    McMourning - Ressurectionist/Guild
    Zoraida - Neverborn/Gremlin

Yeah, I knew it was something like that. I've been spending most of my time with the Arcanists, so I've only vaguely heard about the McM stuff... which should be obvious now

I've never played but now that they are making better models I might want to try...

so how do i get some demo rules or something to see before I commit to this line?

The beta rules are 80mb or I'd email them to you... dunno if anyone has a good way of getting them to you.

If it's like 1st edition, they'll have a demo set of rules online in the nearish future, but they don't yet.

Unfortunately, I feel like the game is very difficult to explain outside of sitting down and playing, because a lot of stuff doesn't play like it looks on paper- if you have a local store/club, that's the best option.

I play at home with my friends and family but one place is know for having a large Malifaux group. The overall product looks really good and that new Latigo group looks pretty cool. the Ten Thunders looks nice too.

what size board does this play on 4X4 or smaller?

One of the best selling points about getting into the game is that, by and large, the starter packs are very solid for getting in for a reasonable price. The Latigo group has a particularly high point value by price, since they're all character pieces.

Well, and at least in 1.5, Perdita and crew were VERY beginner friendly. They were very straight-forward and very powerful. Other than a Fransisco sling-shot, they had no "tricks" per se, to learn.

I was always a fan of that crew, but ye Gods are the new models hit or miss. They range from cool to offensive in the span of one box.

Viktorias and Pandora are finally out, a week and a half late. Now to see if MM will actually manage to get my preorder out before the weekend. (What's the point of preordering if the store is slower to fill pre-orders than new orders?)

On the topic of Latigos, they're probably the only case where I prefer the original metals. New Perdita looks dumpy, and Nino looks far better with a sniper rifle than a gatling gun.

I've never understood Nino's weapon, the old one didn't look much like a rifle, either.

    I feel like it's a mixed bag:
Perdita looks worse (love the original)
The nephilim looks nearly the same, w/e
Francisco looks worse, despite not having a dumb gun any more. Wish they'd gone with the book art.
Santiago looks better (but I'll be rolling w/ santana, so w/e)
I like nino's pose and bandanna, think both have weird guns
Papa looks great, feel he's the most improved (looks dangerous, rather than some sort of silly jumping guy)

I'm pretty much avoiding the actual Ortega models:
    -Alternate plastic Perdita
    -Santana
-Miss Terious minus casket as Francisco

Don't really feel a need for Nino or Papa Loco, so I've got an awesome core to a crew already to use with other guild stuff.

Niño is still target número uno whenever I bring him. I don't think he's made it past the second turn yet, my regular opponent always goes out of his way to kill him. Niño's trigger that forces an opponent to lose cards or the model dies is even better in 2.0 (and not just because it deals damage first), card hand management is so vital and he screws with that very well.

Eh, he's powerful, but compared to a lot of stuff in other factions he's not exactly unstoppable.

Also, heavily reliant on terrain build and density.

Nice perches in the deployment zones and long drawn LOS? Deadly.

Winding labyrinth? Not nearly as dangerous.

My opponents generally find Austringers much more obnoxious, despite not hitting nearly as hard or accurately.

100% agreement. Playing my Ortegas last night reminded me just how much I appreciate those models... simple as they are.

Meanwhile, my wife had a Seamus vs. Seamus mirror match, and neat 3d-renders aside, her Seamus box painted well, looked massively superior to the new Red Chapel box painted adequetly. I definitely don't think Seamus' crew got a particularly nice new box.

Is it bad that I like the art for the set pieces rather than the characters? I think Kirai doesn't look like kirai, Lost Love looks like a stunt double from the Temple of Doom, and Lucius looks a little too neverborn-y for me (I realize his fluff changed, but still)...

The quality of the art is still well done, but just not pulling me in :-\

On Kirai I'll agree (I don't know much about Lucius); I have the metal kit, and her model in that is in a very, very different tonal nature then this. Isn't Kirai the Avatar of Despair or something like that? Here she is more... uh, I'm not sure what that pose is, exactly, running dash, I guess?

It's not that the art/new idea is bad (in fact I think it's very good), it's just that I don't really see the connection to the older models. Did she get changed in the M2 shift? That seems... odd.

If I remember her fluff correctly she was a gardener (hence the shears), but she seems way more pin-uppy than before and that pic doesn't capture the somber tone that the original mini had.

    The flavor-shift could be justified.

If the TtB Canon Campaign actually did have an affect on the Malifaux world (and someone can confirm based on Wave 2 playtest), Lucius is a neverborn creature, which I'm fine with as my two favorite factions were Neverborn and Guild. With that being said, there were only a handful of people (the party that revealed this piece of information) privy to this knowledge in the game world. So his nature, while revealed, should still be a mystery to the common person, and as such I think that he should still have that sort of 'dignified' status that he appeared to have during 1st edition.

Like I said, the art of the piece is very good, but I think that there is just something 'slimy' about the new Lucius art. But that's just me

So far, I find the Version 2 plastics to be very, very mixed. I'll happily eat crow, however, and admit that despite my earlier resistance the game itself plays much, much better. :-)

Still, as models go, you have crews like Seamus that look virtually unchanged, or worse outright than the old models, boxes like the Ortegas which are about 50/50 between great and awful models, and the stuff like the Viktorias which look wonderful. Its been strange. I went from sure i'd be rebuying tons of crews, to actually buying up Version 1/1.5 metal models for items that flat-out looked better before.

That said, my Translucent Pandora crew is about the sexiest thing in my collection (I'd say the same for Translucent Tara crew, but her model is awful, as is Karina.... boring and weirdly static poses)

The folks at Wyrd are doing a raffle for FLGS shoppers

    Wyrd Games

    New Year Raffle

Wyrd is running a raffle in an effort to support local brick and mortar game stores. To enter purchase any Wyrd product from your Local Gaming Store between December 20th and January 25th. Every Friday from the 3rd of January till the 31st we will raffle off a special limited edition plastic box set (Your choice of Transparent Pandora, Transparent Rasputina or Dayglow Pandora) to some lucky person who purchased Wyrd product (including all card and board games) at a local game store!

To enter, scan or photograph your receipt and send it to Jacqulyn@wyrd-games.net with the exact words, "New Year Raffle" in the title of the email. The receipt must have the date of purchase, name of the store, price, and product code (or name of the item) visible. Unfortunately, hand written receipts can not be accepted. At the end of every week, we will pick a random person in both North America and abroad (Europe, etc) and we will send out the bundle! Winners will be emailed and will have 48 hours to respond, or a new winner will be selected. The store where the purchase was made will also receive one of each of the limited edition sets.

Only product purchased through brick and mortar stores will be eligible. We know that not everyone has an LGS near them, but we are really trying to help support local business. Winners will be picked from entries during that week (so if you enter on week 1, you need to enter again to try to win week 2). You may enter as many times as you wish during any week.

so if you're buying something in store remember to keep your receipt enter

    Arcanists' new master: Ironsides

I'm not sure how I feel about Ironsides. From the stat card I as imagining something more like this:
    Spoiler:

I'm sort of disappointed. But at the same time it"s cool to have a black female character.

Also, any news about when gremlins might get some plastic love? I've been wanting to expand my gremlin crew, but it seems like Gremlins aren't even on the schedule for a new box.

I can dig it. I was hoping she'd be more Pam from Archer, but this works too. She looks like someone who might be able to fit a pipe and take a punch, as opposed to another waif with implants like most of their females (Zoraida and Sybelle excluded).

They did a pretty good gob with Taylor too.

And to be fair, allot of the male melee masters are pretty weedy too. McMorning definitely doesn't look like a 14 wound Hard to wound model.

    Really digging the alternative look.

Agreed that there are quite a few masters that feel disproportionately tough based on the model. McM sure doesn't look twice as tough as the Viktorias...

She's the new Arcanist master, brought in as a Miner and Steamfitter Union leader. She's not magically gifted, making her somewhat of an anomaly in the faction. Play wise, she's a pugilist that get's better the more enemies around her and the more she's hit. She builds adrenaline which can be spent on more attacks, regens, etc. She also has a pretty awesome "you looking at me?" ability that lures things into melee, they take a debuffed attack and then she gets to retaliate. I'm looking forward to trying her out in her finished form.

The problem with Malifaux, in spite of its skirmish sized games, is that I want everything. The Lone Marshall does seem a bit expensive compared to most though, you can pick some whole crews for that price.

I understand pricing crew boxes lower than comparable support kits since you'll sell more of most crew boxes than most support kits and they have a history of pricing their mounted models around $30-$35. However, post a switch to plastic, a single mounted figure for $30 still seems high. I feel like a bunch of the other models are fairly well priced, but I'd like it if they packaged some of the unique models together to cut down on the number of SKUs and possibly a slightly lower cost per figure. Uniques like Bishop, Hans, Johan and Killjoy might make sense packaged together.

I do think it is interesting that the December Acolyte and Convict Gunslinger are getting three and two models in their plastic versions respectively.

Totally understand that. $30 for a single mounted resin or metal figure makes sense to me. For plastic it makes less sense. There's plenty of other Malifaux models I like and at prices I like. I'll just pass on the Lone Marshal.

You'll sure as hell sell more at that price lol. I'd rather just buy another McCabe box and convert the mounted version. Plus the figure is just kind of boring and generic looking. You'd think they could have added a few bells and whistles. Or spurs at least. At least he has stirrups.

I'm glad we''re getting some variation on those. I wonder if silent ones and other non-unique minions will be getting multiple models as well. Though really Wyrd... 3 samurai? A little optimistic on a pretty unpopular unit.

I'd like to be able to buy some of the separate items for some of the crews, like the Scales of Justice or one of the wastrels, but it looks like they'd be cheaper to get if I just bought the box and separated the others out to sell. And yeah, the Lone Marshall is a nice miniature, but I'd rather have a whole crew box rather than just one mounted dude.

The Lone Marshal really has me baffled. For that price, there must be something more in the box, right? Maybe it includes a lot of extra bits or something. There's no way Wyrd would charge $35 for a single human-sized model on horseback, would they?

EDIT: Others have mentioned converting the Marshal out of the McCabe box, which sounds like a great idea, especially once the Through the Breach character boxes come out. Any word on when those will be released?

The Pale Rider has an MSRP of $35, and had the same sticker shock when I snagged that one.

A glance at the online store indicates that the other 3 Riders are only $30, so maybe Guild players are just expected to pay a bit more for some reason? >.>

Also, the Through the Breach books are at the printers and the miniatures are on a boat.

How far along they are in the printing process and transportation (respectively), we have no idea.

More Malifaux-Related, for $90 you can get three minis of Lucius, Collette, and a "Miss"

Note that they're anime'd up as part of a promotion for this Kickstarter and very unlikely to be representative of Lucius and Collette's actual plastic releases.

    There are three products here.

A mobile game unrelated to Malifaux and Wyrd.

A card game unrelated to Malifaux but published by Wyrd.

Three crossover Malifaux character miniatures at 32mm. This is the listed $90 pledge and you pledge for and get nothing but the miniatures. Alternatively, you can get Lucian himself alone for $35 as an "Add-on" to the $1 base pledge; he comes with a special stat card.

It's also a bit frustrating to have someone being short with a backer when they are the ones that are six months late.

You're mistaking "We won't tell you" for "We can't tell you."

If they give an estimate on arrival and it's late, everything they say becomes excuses for people who want to complain. Especially if it's explaining a delay that they might not have any control over--the shipment wins the Homeland Security Surprise Bonus Inspection; traffic accident with the shipping trucks--vs. someone messing up the import paperwork. For illustration, see the Wild West Exodus kickstarter and the occasional accidents that it ran into.

And since when has that stopped them? If that was their response to all critique and controversy we'd still be on Malifaux 1.5.

Interesting, but I'm not sure how they really can say that its only at retail... I assume online stores like Discount Games use the same distributors as everyone else. Miniature Market and The Warstore have physical stores as well. Its a cool idea for a promo though!

I think they mean they're only putting it in stores (online or B&M) for those couple of months

and after that you'd have to rely on getting it direct from them at a con/tournament/etc

The shame is... Malifaux is too good of a game for Wyrd as it exists today (and mind you, I DO wish them success and do hope they grow in a way that lets their ambition meet their reality).

Its a good system, a lot of the models are gorgeous, and it ends up being my favorite game to play for "fun" value, each and every week.

But waiting on releases etc... is misery inducing.

Gotta say, my patience is definitely running out.

An extra 6 months seemed very reasonable. Ending the beta in early January seemed like a positive sign.

Hitting April and getting a *shrug* in response to questions is garnering some ire.

So, obviously "Through the Breach" folks have more to complain about, but as little annoyances go...

Tonight is my club's Malifaux night. The wife and I are excited, packed our mini bag, etc... and now have to begin the new ritual of printing out stat-cards for minis we've long owned.

So not only do I need to be teased with nicer models months upon months in advance (tonight i'll be playing Leveticus while day-dreaming about the set they've shared art for, but with their speed of releases... I know it won't be available to buy for half-a-year-plus), but I don't even have proper stat cards for the same half-year-plus.

I've learned to love Version 2, and even begrudgingly find more better with it than worse. Malifaux is still one of my favorite settings, and a game I look forward to playing every week.... but the Version 2 roll-out has been TERRIBLE.

Everything looks good save the December Acolytes. Like the monks of the low river, their leg proportions seem off and poses seem more interpretive dance. Not thrilled with Bishop's pose either, as he's crouching in the art and doing some kind of weird kneel in the mini.... but anything is an improvement over his old POS sculpt. Somer's crew looks frickin awesome. Governer's proxy also looks great... I have a demonic monk NPC in a game he'd be perfect for, but man, that feather is as good as toast. Wyrd's 3D render guys never seem to realize these are intended as actual physical objects that are handled.

The new gunslingers and Bishop are exactly what I was hoping for. I was already planning on getting a Viks crew, but these just seal the deal.

I've been beginning to suspect the opposite. All Wyrd's art style is the same and it matches almost perfectly with the sculpts. Every perspective position from rips to folds to other small details match on both the art and the 3D rendered model.

They likely sculpt the model digitally, render a screenshot in the desired perspective, then edit the picture for box artwork.

A poster on their official forums asked about their timeline, and got a fairly vague "soon, we hope" response from staff. Apparently, it was sent out on a ship from the factory, and they were waiting for it to clear customs and get to them. I believe they said they were hoping for a summer release, assuming all goes well.

Not making a value judgement on their communication with customers. Just passing along what I've heard.

    "Nathan Caroland

The product will not be available for retail before Kickstarters are taken care of - I've already made that clear.

I could put an update today going 'hey, books are coming in ..' but I'm not going to. I'm going to wait till they arrive this afternoon (if tracking isn't lying) and come next Monday will post pictures of the product in hand, etc - which I'm pretty excited about personally. Not everything has shown up, but we're pretty close.

In the mean time, the 'Wyrd has screwed me over and over' thread has run its course. The product has been created, paid for, and in the hands of other vendors right now (some of which I could strangle). When it's in mine, it'll be knocked out to kickstarter backers as quickly as we can, and the warehouse knows that that will be a mandatory overtime week to make that happen. If we could snap our fingers and have it done and sorted - I most certainly would."

    *facepalm*

They simply do not understand Kickstarter. It is a free loan service to them, nothing more

If indeed the product is in the hands of other vendors

(does this mean some books got shipped direct to distribution?)

I would not be surprised to see some of them on sale before KS backers get (or are even sent theirs) as distributors seem pretty poor at keeping to street dates, and if they ship them to stores they'll e even more likely to sell early

(and I can't see Wyrd actually pulling out of a distribution deal if they do, it would cost the company too much)

but that said it will be interesting to see what they've come up with (and what I missed out on by dropping out of their mess of a KS)

I don't mind so much, but RPG's on Kickstarter don't have a high standard of punctuality. At least not the ones I've backed which also include Exalted 3rd edition (7 months late, the most optimistic guesses at release say end of June), Primeval Thule Campaign Setting (6 months late, quickstart may be out "soon"), and Space: 1889 (5 months late, release "very soon")

But credit where it's due, the Hell Dorado one delivered two months early!

Which is strange. Wyrd isn't a fledgling company. They've been in business for years. Malifaux is a well-supported, well-received game, on its second edition no less. It baffles me that they screwed this one up so badly, when they've already handled what I think are much bigger, more difficult challenges.

Guild Guard in plastic should be good, and the Mercs look very cool too.

How long does it usually take for starter set models to get a separate release? As the Wastrels in the Relic Hunters box are really cool, but I can't find them separately.

I think the Relic Hunters set has the models laid out in such a way that they can't do a separate release for the Wastrels.

I heard somewhere that the old plastic sets were getting retooled (specifically "The Thunder") so that the layout made more sense like the new plastic sprues and you could sell things such as Wastrels or Torakage seperately

That makes sense, but I'd imagine that would be a priority for Wyrd after all the metal line and the new masters get remade.

Don't want to turn this into a turd throwing contest, but what has Wyrd done that has made them look like GW? When I did buy there stuff they were a great gold standard company. They still seem to be, they provide quality minis and support, there fan base seem to be the most enthusiastic I have ever seen. I love those custom fate decks. Perhaps best PM me with info I have not heard of?

I always had the opinion the renders on the box were a bad choice.

They look terrible and do not do the actual models justice, don't know if it's the shade of color or what but they don't seem to hold up to the actual model.

Perhaps a clear window to show the model? or if they can afford it (I assume they can) studio painter with the painted model on the box?

Weird thing is, the models honestly look exceptionally similar to the renders. I'm convinced the art is even based on a digitally-painted-over version of the renders themselves as well.

It's certainly a unique way of doing things, but it's not bad. With the renders, you can see most of the detail more honestly than a studio paintjob and more clean than a primed-and-inked model photo. There are plenty of people on the forums and such that'll photograph the unpainted models, and you're in no rush to order/preorder anyways.

Do we think the current delay in releases will have an impact upon these ones?

I am with Absolutionis on this I am not that bothered by the box renders, no other company matches render to finished model as closely as Wyrd. That said why they do not just show actual miniatures I have no idea.

I think I remember hearing an interview where they said that it would cause delays with packaging to have an actual model produced and then painted so it could be photographed for the boxes. The method they have now allows them to print the boxes up independently of the miniature production and thus speed up the process of getting the minis out into the wild.

I wonder if in the Lucius box he will get Guild Guard that looks like the ones we see in the wave 1 cards or look like the new artwork that has been seen. I know I will pick up a box of them when the time comes and have them match the schemes of the wave 1 cards.

I believe they stated that they use some process where they take the illustration and build out the digital sculpt from it

Looking at them more closely, I am very much inclined to agree with you on this. It does make sense. Comic books are first drawn by an artist and then colored by another artist. Wyrd is essentially doing the last part over the renders instead of pencil drawings.

I seem to remember the topic being brought up specifically about Misaki's box set because it was sold out and needed another print run anyway and it would be a good time to go ahead and get it done.

about two years? ago or so in the book they hinted at a sort of psych/mental institution division of the guild. A lot of guild players were really into the idea. Was just saying if they ever did make it a faction I would start playing malifaux again. I havent' kept up with malifaux officially just browse every now and then

You're welcome for the picture collection (I would've kept the Names and credit).

There are 7 masters for each of the 7 factions. I think Wyrd would at least get all of them out before talking about any more.

Maybe you were thinking of the image of Jack Daw's crew above?

And for those who don't bother venturing into the subforum, Wyrd has announced that they have received everything but the hardcovers (there's a little concern over the Multi Pose Minis, but I think they have them from their last update), so Through the Breach is supposed to be shipped out by the end of the month, meaning most backers should have it sometime in the next month or two, depending on where they are in the shipping order and where they are in the world.

I was starting to feel a little down on the whole TTB thing but I recently started to read the Malifaux fluff - a task that has been on my to-do list for about 2 years - and I'm enjoying it so much that I'm feeling much more upbeat about the imminent* arrival of my RPG books. The interaction between the masters reminds me of the interaction between the various Batman villains in the old cartoons which is kind of cool.

    * e.g. a number of months between 1 and 3, plus a few additional days to recover from the shock of the import / handling charges..

    Oh wow. That's a lot.

Seems like a mixed bag of whether I personally like it or not. If anything, I enjoy the stoic metal Von Shill and the ominous metal Kirai better than the action poses they're showing here.

Regardless, the previews give us enough time to get the mtal model before the plastics replace them.

Zoraida looks very very different. She almost looks gremlin-like over there.

Fittingly she is now a neverborn/gremlin dual master.

Looks like Kirai, the dreamer, Von Schill, and Lucius for me. Though I'll probably hold off and just get enough to hit whatever the free miss model is and pick up the rest when they hit retail.

That's exactly why I went out and got as much of the metal Kirai stuff as possible when the artwork was shown. it really doesn't do it for me, action pose killer gardner isn't really how I see her, but each their own I guess. Sadly some of the metal stuff, including kirai as far as I've seen, have been difficult to get by for some time now.

I'm wondering what the other 16 kits will be, this might hurt if there's lots of rezzer and or TT stuff in it. I hope they will have Molly up for gencon aswell, the last Rezzer master I'm waiting for to finish that collection. Is there any definitive news on what the miss will be by the way? I'm glad the Nightmare edition is the Golem as it saves me some money With the dreamer out aswell though, itš going to be hard to resist plunging into neverborn aswell, must ... resist...

Yeah, but how long is YOUR paint queue? I know mine is technically much longer (3-4 years of back log at least lol). I've always seen little reason to buy anything beyond the nightmare + whatever X amount required to get me to the $100 threshold for the "Miss" figure since you pay more than you can get elsewhere and get gouged for shipping too.

Golem looks good, as does the new Chompy, who appears to be similar to the Nightmare one. Can't stand the new hyper Kirai or Molly, and the new Collette art is just fething terrible. Lets take a showy stage magician/showgirl and put her in a boring, no frills dress! Get the metal ones while you can... in general the plastic masters all kind of suck. Almost no personality in their faces since they went to a more true scale style.

Myself, Paradigm and other UK fans also have to consider the postage cost, possible import tax and additional post Gencon waiting time as Wyrd are still relatively small and take a fair time to get their orders sent out given the volume that they will receive.

From one of the earlier posts, we have the art for a Performer and a Fire Gamin. Maybe Kaeris and Collette will be there. Also, Nekima's 3D sculpt was shown.

If anything the rest of the kits may just be the 3-ofs with Freikorpsmen, Gremlins, etc.

No Colette makes me a bit sad.

I'm actually pretty disappointed in the Miss for this year. I like the teddy model, but he doesn't really seem to fit with the previous Misses.

Thanks, I'd skipped that bit. Ermagerd I gotta have that new Ikiryo. More seishin. It's more seishin.

That chick is getting a hand swap and she'll be used for something else. Lost Love too. I'm not too keen on the new sculpt. I think the old one held more horror.

No, not at all. The first Miss was a Nurse for the REsurrectionists. The second a Death Marshal (looks like Santana) for the Guild. The third an Executioner for the Arcanists. This one being a Neverborn flows well.

    Hmm, not the most excited.

The samurai look really nice, and I'd probably be interested in the rules and the golem, but...

None of the crews wowed me, though I might get Zoraida since her new crew is pretty good (OTOH, I really wanted Ophelia's crew, but the whole thing together looks pretty static so I'll probably skip it now).

The teddy is disappointing for a few reasons, adding to problem with it not appearing female so bucking the trend, teddy's already gotten a LE sculpt that even came with a head swap and arm swap, so there are already 3.5 sculpts that without converting or reposing could make 6 unique versions of an already expensive (point cost) mini.

The pose is definitely "wrong". So're the proportions. The LE one just looks "right" to me. The normal one, no so much... But it might make a great basis for a scratch-build/conversion for another game system...

Seriously bummed that I didn't get onboard with the TtB kickstarter if only for Hannah. And I don't roleplay anymore.

Facebook group says that, in the past, just by having $100 or greater on a purchase flags it and you get one dropped in the box.

If you don't get it and spend over $100, just send an email and they'll make it right.

I feel like the "Miss" being a Teddy is holding me back. Shipping is about $20 for me and with zero discount besides a free model I don't want, I'm thinking I'd rather just wait it out and support my FLGS with my purchases.

I mostly want Miss Ery for if I run a dual Teddy list. I don't like repeated models in skirmish games.

This is going to sound like a dumb question, when does gencon end? In terms of ordering stuff from their site.

Also, will TtB stuff be available immediately after Gen Con, or is this a special early availability, and then they'll be properly released in a few months.

@ Motyak, I assume the Gencon stuff will be removed from the website on sunday night/monday morning.

The Through The Breach stock is early availability for Gencon ,hence the male multi-part kit having no box if you order it now. No firm release date yet but it should be late September at the earliest.

    Oh and more Hannah:

    Is that Hannah Gencon only?

I don't even play Malifaux, but I want that model!

That version will be released down the line, too- it's just a prerelease AFAIK.

    Ah thanks!

    Good to know...

It may be the model that 'makes' me start playing Malifaux!

What faction is Hannah part of?

    Is it...Freikorps?

There don't seem to be a lot of miniatures available for that faction.

Are you able to use 'allies' in Malifaux?

Friekorps is one theme in the Outcast faction, which is about 50/50 mercs (like friekorps) and creepy pariahs (that often have a lot of overlap with the undead faction). Within a faction, you can usually take any faction model other than totems and a few others which are master-specific and come with said master.

All masters have at least one specialist (the totem) that only they can take, a few have others, and some masters are dual faction, meaning they can be taken in two factions and usually have a way of gaining a limited selection from the faction they're not playing in. Some also target specific traits they can always select from (ex: the beastmaster can always select beasts).

Finally, any faction can hire 2 mercs at a cost increase.

Regarding friekorps, Von Schill's got no special out of faction interaction, so you'd probably mostly want to stick to outcasts, and everything in the Outcast faction that's on the store is an option, except for the The Thunder (she gets her options from crossing into Outcast)

That was both helpful and confusing at the same time!

    I'm a 100% Malifaux beginner...

What could/should I build starting with Hannah the stompy robot?

Get hired guns so you have the rest of the Friekorps and Von Schill the master of the Friekorps. If you can find it the Friekorps strongarm suit is a good buy as it is a good model and another friekorp model. Beyond that go with what models you like inside the Outcasts faction.

Like infinity there are really no bad models, (yes some are better than others) so you are not wasting money buying stuff. In the end your style of play is going to be the biggest thing.
