Personally, I don't think the new minis are all that spectacular. The Terminators look fairly cool, but some of the genestealers look awkward and ill proportioned,to me. Also, if you look objectively at whats in the box, it's WAAAY too expensive. I know GW games are awesome, and all that, but there are a lot of board games on the market that come with snazzy little figures, some with neat, plastic tiles, and virtualy none with a hundred dollar price tag. My kid has HeroScape, me and his mom play it with him pretty regularly, it's good fun, it's expandable, and the starter set, which has plastic tiles and a ton of figures, plus dice,counters,etc... was only $40. I know, the little minis are not as cool as GW ones, but the game came with a lot more and cost a lot less. Plus, the little expansion packs are only ten bucks and come with even more figures as well as rules and more plastic tiles. Still, there is no substitute for GW games like 40k, but a spinoff boardgame that costs a hundred bucks, to me, is unreasonable.

I do not believe the price is all that far off the mark.
FFG makes great games. Descent and DOOM are awesome. But the minis are pretty crap compared to GW quality stuff.
And even with the subpar minis, Descent goes for $70 retail.

Heroscape has a big mainstream game company behind it. They have economy of scale to help with the pricing.
Also, their target is younger than 40k.
As much as I hear the 12yo being the target for GW, I believe they aim more for 14-16.
Get the impressionable, then when they leave for girls and parties, they remember and come back after college when they have money. To buy $300 plastic tables.

Luckily, I've stockpiled enough minis to last me in college if I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do.

yeah,
I'd just like to try and help a little with what HBMC is saying... because I agree the only real reason not to buy this is you don't want to play SpaceHulk or your unwilling to pay the Price / you can't afford to pay the Price...

This is not a 40k expansion...
If your still not getting this, for your reference and to help explain how it's not a expansion I'll post a few photos from the the GW website. these items are found in the 'warhammer 40,000 Expansions' submenu:

-----------------------------------------------------------^^ there it is.

----------------------------------------------------------- ^^ there it is.

----------------------------------------------------------- ^^ there it is.

---------^^ there it is.

Now SpaceHulk isn't found in the 40k Expansions submenu... It's not even in the 40k menus... It's found in the Gaming Menu
look in the bottom left corner...

^^ 'oh noes no 40k expansion symbol!'

Panic...

Since I didn't read all 7 pages of replies, can someone tell me if anybody actually thought SH was an expansion?

People who point out that SH contains no models that interest them are really just saying: "I don't care about the game itself, so why should I buy it?"

I guarantee there are people buying SH who don't care about the game at all and probably won't even play it, they just want those models. Dumb reason to buy it? Not at all. 99$ for 12 terminators including a librarian is a good deal. Those are the same type of customers that are refusing to buy it for it's lack of models that interest them. (Customers who don't care about the game itself.)

Will not pay $100 us for a made in china plastic and card board game that has nothing of interest to a non tyranid/sm player. Material costs, labour, packaging, and shipping It should retail at 50-ish dollars.

At 50 dollars it would still be at best a coin toss because of the limiting nature of the game.

Ok, first off I find it entertaining that H' has taken up the mantle of thread fanboi. Wait a sec while I check the temperature in hell.....

My reasons why I am not impressed with Space Hulk.

I will ignore for now my initial reason that Space Hulk was overhyped and the ammount of BS regarding the mystery box. That might have pissed me off a little but is not a valid reason of itself to have a low opinion of the boxset.

I will also ignore cardstock terrain because cardstock is only an issue if it is verticle standing and folded. Thick cardstock doors and floors can be good. Ols Space Hulk being a testimony to this.

Pricetag, now that I cannot ignore and is valid in itself but to counter that Space Hulk might be a medium term investment.

chaos0xomega wrote:
I'll clue you in on something my friend. Limited Edition means JACK. I can't tell you how many items I have acquired over the years that were marketed as "limited edition" that are now worth less than they were than they sold. In fact, the entire business of collectables has become a mockery of itself.

Thought I would answer this one directly. Generally I would agree with the above comment, but some things can and do make money over time. Most of the articically rare collectable miniatures have lost their hyped value, but rare boardgames from popular franchises dont. The Dragon Tower boxset for Talisman can fetch $300, I can see this edition of Space Hulk fetching something like that in ten years time.
However GW lied about the uniqueness of the project, so they might well lie about limited editon too, especially if it sells, and doubly so if some people buy multiple boxsets asc an investment thus swallowing out those sets purchased for play. I dont trust GW to keep to its promise of a 5000 copy run, so I cant trust it as an investment, and when not seen as an investment the pricetag is just too much.

Wierd basing. Now this is a matter of personal taste and opinion, and isnt a matter of right or wrong, but I dislike the overdetailed basing and lack of stands, especially for the genestealers. I see genestealers on terrain moving down the corridor taking the terrain with them. All the basing detail is a turn off for me.

Next up I have heard the miniaturers are not 40K scale but slightly larger, not too much but probably enough to make therm stand out the wrong way. Again I can beleive that but I will wait for confirmation before I say more on this, it shouldnt be a long wait.

If they are confirmed compatible or if you want 'true scale terminators' well they have to be Blood Angels, and I have never been fond of Blood Angels.

What I do like about the Space Hulk set is that it looks like it is back to 1st edition from the number of flamer templates and which dice are included. This is a good sign and the sand timer looks promising, I agree with sand timers for game turns because if you end your turn early and turn the glass over there is less sand in it for the opponent. I hope they thought up the rules well for this.
In any event why not just play 1st edition? I dont have an answer for that that satisfies me, especially as I can use my own termies and nid army to provide the miniatures for the game.

All this talk about FFG is making me think that Doom would probably be a much better buy than Space Hulk. Cheaper, minis can be painted, and probably plays very similarly, too.

How in the hell can you possibly know that? If they retail for 99 USD, the retailers will probably get them for $70.

Seeing as how only the rules and board are printed in China with the figs being produced at Citadel Nottingham or Memphis (and thus getting killed on labor costs - which they have no choice about because the Chinese are scumbags when it comes to business and respecting copyrights), they will be lucky to clear $45 or $50 per unit profit which is standard markup.

On the point of the reveal, I am with you guys, it sucked. GW made a poor marketing decision to hype the "mystery box". People who are buying it would have done so without all the smoke and mirrors.

To those who are not buying it because they can't take the termies and 'nids and use them as-is: I am glad you're not buying it. It means there may be more copies available for people who would rather play the game, as opposed to pillaging it for bitz for your 40K armies.

And to those that have never played it before, I am sad for you. It really is a fun game - so much so that I bought a 2nd ed. copy on ebay for $80 earlier this year. It was worth every penny and I am confident (after having assembled the minis and the LGS) that this one will be too.

Not these, man. The printing costs must have been insane because the thickness and quality of printing justifies the cost - which at $99 says ALOT.

Every tile is detailed and has relief on it. The colors are vibrant and rich. They made a point to include some quality disturbing imagery as well.

As far as a limited run, I really think it will be. GW has a lousy history when promoting anything but core games.

Now if they had any sense at all they would license additional printings + rights to new material to FFG and let them have Ultramarine / Deathwatch / Wolves expansions (with citadel retaining fig rights) and print additional board tiles and missions - perhaps in a book as they did for TIDE OF IRON. But that is wishful thinking and not based in this plane of reality.

To the first point, the timer is only for Marine players, so you would want to use all of your available time.

As for the 1st ed question - Well, you would have to find one in a condition and at a price you could live with. As I said earlier, I have a 2nd ed copy that I cherish ( so much so that I have contingency plans for that game to be safe in the event of a hurricane in S. Fla.). It is not easy to find a game in great condition that was produced before alot of the kids playing 40K today were born!

Doom is awesome for multiplayer deathmatch. But it doesn't play anything like SpaceHulk. The big difference is that the hallways are 2 squares wide. It immediately feels bigger than SpaceHulk.

There are more variables involved. From the skill cards you can get, to the creatures you fight.

Plus the mod ideas in the rules are great. Personal favorite mod is "Hail to the King, Baby!". Unlimited shotguns with knockback.

The minis are the crappy bendy plastic. And come in 3 colors, which is important to the game rules. You would have to color code the painted stuff.

Space Hulk is great, but you are limited to 2 players max.

Ok, I feel I need to comment on the price.

I've done some snooping around the net, and to be fair and honest, £58.70 (plus free shipping) is not bad at all.

You have to consider that you get a complete game here!!! Now yes, you can buy other games for cheaper prices, but what are we talking about? 1/3rd of the price? No....a 1/4 of the price? no again....at best (in the UK) a comparible game will be around £10 cheaper......whoopee do!

Thats £10 cheaper, but for a game without the same "Nostalgia" (if thats your thing) and without the same degree of compatiblity potential for CERTAIN WH40K players...

Now H.B.M.C is having a cardiac arrest telling us about the stand alone nature of the game, and I have to say its a fair comment. You buy Space Hulk to take time out from your normal run of the mill WH40K game....period! Its like me switching from WH40K to play Infinity...I don't look for the Marine equivalent (thank god) in Infinity because its a seperate and different game.

To be fair I wish Space Hulk all the best! It was a cracking game in its day, and I have very fond memories playing it. Its a great game to introduce people into the feel of WH40K, or to simply play in its own right. Its certainly a welcome respite from the PS3 or Xbox, and with a few house rules and some imagination theres no reason it can't be something for everyone!

AAHH, Try again. Your reading your own meaning into this.

What I was stating was that if I have no interest in playing SM and Tyranids then it is because I don't care for the model line. I don't pick my armies based off of competitiveness but rather if I like the Model line and playstyle. Your statement seems to work off of the assumption that everyone likes the Tranid or SM models and their design.

The logic is that if I don't like the models enough to buy them for 40K then I'm not shelling out $100 for some game where I would have to use said models.

I've got to admit I was nearly swayed into buying it until I saw it being played at my local GW on Saturday. The terrain counters, doors and such like look top notch. The figures however Bleargh! they look like oversized greenarmy men one piece including irregular shaped base in bright red or blue plastic. If they had been AOBR style models I would have probablly caved and bought it but as is no thankyou.

This has nothing to do with competitiveness (seriously - ) and everything to do with people not buying Space Hulk because it gives them nothing for 40K. At no point do I make the assumption that people like the 'style' of Tyranids and Space Marines.

If you have no interest in playing Space Marines or Tyranids - regardless of reason - it's a silly reason not to buy Space Hulk, because Space Hulk has nothing to do with playing Space Marines or Tyranids. The only thing Space Hulk has to do with is playing Space Hulk.

A bit tough when they sell to retailers at discounts of 35% to 45% depending on the country.

BUT!..If a profit margin of 70% or more really upsets you....Stay away from resturants, jewelery stores, and especially bars. Look at the cost of a keg of beer, then go figure out how many 12 oz beers they sell you at 4 bucks each that you get out of a keg.

I don't play tyranids but I will after I buy Space Hulk.

I also play Blood Angels, but after I get all those tyranids from Space Hulk I might have to take a break from them and play Tyranids.

So if I'm going to stop playing blood angels, and therefore, have no double use for the Space Hulk Blood Angels, but I start to play Tyranids and make double use out of the tyranids from space hulk, do I need to take into account the fact that I won't be using the blood angels I already have for a while or is that offset by the new tyranids I will be getting?

I just want to be sure I'm getting the most for my 100 bucks so if someone could help me out that would be great.

Thanks

Why do you have to stop playing Blood Angels?

Most people here have multiple armies. I myself have 8 completely different armies (Ultramarines, DIY Black Templars, Necrons, Tyranids, DH/WH, Imperial Guard, Chaos, LatD), and there are people here who have that and play Warhammer as well (with several Fantasy armies). So there's no reason why you can't keep your Blood Angels around.

Besides, having two armies is good. It means you can switch when you want to try something new or have a change of pace.

Hey, is it so unrealistic to use other Terminator miniatures in the game? For example, if you hate Blood Angels, why not use Space Wolves?

I would suggest that one would buy the game for the mechanics and game playability, the miniatures are pretty circumstantial IMHO.
