So play nice, you can each enjoy the machine you are playing the game on.
I just hope that the mods take off as well on the consoles as they have on the PCs - I have had Fallout 3 on my machine since the game was new, and there are still mods coming out.
The Auld Grump
*EDIT* I was a cruel, cruel man, and just put a two liter bottle of Dr. Pepper next to my good lady as she swears at Raiders...
I expect her to still be playing when I go to bed tonight. (She works tomorrow morning.)
The main problem with consoles is accessibility. Modders face hard limits on consoles they just cannot get over unless they get official support by the developer himself and, in some cases, Bethesda. Plus you're also limited by the hardware. I expect there to be mostly mods that add simple stuff to it instead of having really decisive changes. Like, Wanderer's Edition for FO3 that improves the game by a poopoo ton and takes it to an insane quality level just cannot be done on consoles without having backend access.

An Alienware with a 3.9 proc and 8Gb of memory aught to do I guess. Least with me not wanting to spend more than £700 on Ebay that is.
...Pity the company which I work for doesn't happen to be selling any of the pile of spare Alienwares which we have in the office unfortunately.
I would not recommend alienware, extremely overpriced. Try looking into building one, it's not too complicated, it just requires you do some research first. After that, it's basically model building (just slot/plug it together how it says).
There's even some programs that will do the work of finding the parts for you (just give a general price-range).
If you're really nervous about building the computer yourself, there's places like iBuypower and CyberPower. You pick the parts and they put the PC together. It costs more than doing it yourself, but comes with the comfort of professionals doing the assembly and the website noting hardware incompatibilities. There's so many youtube videos on computer assembly at this point, I don't think anyone really needs to be nervous. PC parts are more durable than people often assume. They're not made of glass.
My God, Ghouls are fething terrifying. On my way to Corvega assembly plant, I ran into a narrow alleyway and came face to face with TEN of the fethers. I ran through the streets squealing. Then I fought my way through Corvega assembly plant through hordes of ghouls and raiders whilst crippled by radiation (50%, anyone know where to find Radaway? ).
Then I returned to the streets, made my way up to some rooftops, another horde of ghouls chased me up the stairs so I dropped frag nades down stairs then ran circles around a sofa trying to reload with the last one chasing me.
Then I walked to a window...And my head was decapitated by a baseball launched from a rocket launcher or something. Fething raiders...
Yeah, I found a pack of them, maybe 10-15. Managed to kill them all, but they really reminded me of the zombies from I Am Legend. Not looking forward to finding harder ones.
Ghouls are fun; a 10mm makes short of them, and I use a pipe sniper rifle I found early on to pick anything at range.
Spoiler:
Lexington and the station between it and the place where you pick up the Corvega plant quest are best traversed during the day, as they're both riddled with ghouls.
Also, speaking of the Corvega plant, when you're already cautiously going through it, after

Tell you what, why not just edit your character file to give yourself max perks and 10's, but keep yourself at level 1, then turn off XP?
And I guess turn the difficulty down and give yourself unlimited ammo on the minigun while changing its damage to 100000?
That way you can just slice through everything without having to think about actually playing the game
Then I guess the only thing to do after that is complain that the base game is too boring and needs a million mods to make it actually interesting.
What's so bad about it then? Genuine question, as I always thought that FO3 was commonly liked among its playerbase. What were your expectations for FO4?
Its not bad, its just pretty average. It looks nice (although obviously hamstrung by console development and a dubious engine) but FO4 is extremely similar to FO3 with some quite minor changes.
This was my expectation for FO4 and Bethesda have met that low standard.
I'm mostly messing around with the crafting for the time being, taking it nice and slow. Nothing too insane or crazy yet, but I like the options we are given.
I've also decided to do my first power armour in Vault-Tec blue:
Though the next one will be military green for sure.
How do you dock it in the cradle? I didn't get a chance to do more than skim through the help file before I went to bed but I did not see anything in there on how to do it
From the rest of the post I quote the above from it seems like the Fallout games are not really your cup of tea. Kind of like buying a road bike and then complaining that you can't to half pipes or crash down mountain trails on it...
For those of us who, you know, seem to actually like the game it is pretty good as is. And certainly will be for a while at least!
SilverMK2 wrote: How do you dock it in the cradle? I didn't get a chance to do more than skim through the help file before I went to bed but I did not see anything in there on how to do it
Simply step out of your armour somewhere near the cradle, then approach it and use the craft option. It should automatically put your armour in the cradle then.
I was blown away yesterday when I found out my first custom paintjob for the power armor, a "Flames" one. Seriously?! Even more custom stuff?! Oh Bethesda <3
I have to admit, I like the "Sims" portion of the game FAR too much. I was genuinely having fun and feeling accomplished as I created the basic stuff for my settlers in Sanctuary.
So, did you guys have fun customising your weapons yet? I spent most of my stuff crafting stuff for my 10mm. It's a small beast now
While the game hasn't crashed as of yet, I have discovered a pair of bugs with regards to saving and loading.
1. After I did my whole armour up in Vault-Tec blue I saved the game, exited it and when I later restarted the game, half of my parts were pre-upgrade again, with the resources used lost as well.
2. Same happened after I found a large military robot, saved the game, had it self-destruct, then reloaded the game to keep it handy, just in case. Only, upon reloading, the robot was still destroyed.

I'm assuming that large robot was found in a junkyard and you had to activate it through a tape, right? That thing was completely bugged for me. After activating it and ordering it to go to the USAF military base (there's a quest concerning the raiders there) it just stood there. No animations of any kind either.
Once I reach the base, it suddenly was there, it was being shot at and yet it didn't shoot back. When I ordered it to self destruct it didn't do so either.
Well, just managed to pop home and check. download finished at exactly 08:30 this morning. Exactly the same time I have to start work.
Still, was also able to check that it runs OK on my system. Not done much, just watched the opening movie and taken a look at the character model building (which face do I want, do I want a beard, that kind of thing) and it looks great with the settings auto-detected setting it all to "High". Don't quite know what kind of a monster PC you'd need for "Ultra" settings, but I don't think I have 4K eyes and I certainly don't have a 4K screen, so I don't think Ultra is necessary for me.
Hope I get enough free time tonight to start playing it a bit, but have to pack as I'm going to be 200+ miles away from my PC over the weekend.

I'm actually at that exact spot but never got a quest for it. I just go through and murder anyone without a name. I stabbed the bot (friggin gun bayonets! I love it!! And I have a bayonet on my rocket launcher!) a few times and continued on my way.
We were talking about saving suits earlier. Don't bother. I now have... five suit frames with their own themes and 8 cores between 95% and 100%. Use them up and ditch them when you're done. Because some of these areas are friggin HARD without the suit. Even with the suit it's rough killing ten Super Mutants of various levels and a Legendary. I'm Level 16 for reference.

For an attempt at baiting me, that's pretty damn obvious. Try a little harder next time, 'K?
I finally managed to start playing at about 10pm last night, and I seem to be drifting towards a fairly sneaky high INT/PER/AGI build, with a bit of strength so that I can actually carry the junk I'm using to upgrade my stuff.
Just cleared out the USAF base near sanctuary and got a nice buff to my sneaking for my troubles, and I'm probably gonna spend some time fixing Sanctuary for a while.
Also, with regards to the modding conversation; I like the idea in principle, but I put the basic highly recommended mods on my New Vegas game, and it broke it; it kept on just dropping straight to desktop or blue-screening, which isn't ideal. Hopefully the modding system for this one will be slightly more rigorous.

It'll mostly go the same as with Skyrim I guess. Download mods through Steam Workshop and have the ability to turn certain mods on and off in the launcher. Meaning you can figure out which mod is the bad guy easier when the game keeps locking up etc.
Or download the more shady mods through various sites, which is harder to do.

I started with a 10 CHA, 10 INT character but given how fighty the game seems to be now, I restarted and toned it down to 5's across AGI, INT, CHA, PER, with the spare bonus point to luck. I plan to just pimp out base building and crafting perks and focus on building up Sanctuary for a while with the odd venture out on a mission when I get bored.

I'm a Fallout fan, in the sense of having played the whole franchise (even the early 00s console spin-offs). I find FO3 to be a fun but ultimately average game, quite good for its exploration part, poor as a shooter (game ran on an outdated engine completely unsuited for shooters) and with a dismal narrative (haven't tried FO4 yet but from their previous games, Bethesda can't write a decent script even for their lives). FNV was way better although still suffering from the engine issue.
So, has FO4 truly adressed and solved the problems FO3 had? It seems they improved in the shooting department, although to be honest I'm fairly skeptical, Skyrim's engine wouldn't have been my choice for a shooter either.

NV was never very good for modding, you have to be pretty careful with it. The skyrim modding scene is pretty good (and with the nexus mod manager, it does all the install/uninstall and download work for you). Since this is being built of the skyrim engine, it should be reasonably solid, just do a little research about incompatibilities (it will generally say what specific or general kinds of mods they will be incompatible with in the description) and you should b fine. Also, loading it up with mods doesn't help. When you have 150-200+ on any system that isn't pretty resilient, it can cause some super-long loading times.
I'm pretty excited to find out what people will do. There are some amazing quest mods out there, even mods that add DLC-sized quests and areas to explore (or in the case of Project Brazil, a whole new game).

It was the story that really killed it for me. It was so dull and uninteresting. After playing NV, which had very interesting narratives, both in the main story-line and in side-quests, it was a real disappointment.

Really?
I was totally un-invested in the story in NV. Most of the side quests were pretty pants as well. Just played through them and the DLC not knowing what the hell was going on or really nor caring about anyone or anything involved most of the time. I think the first time I played NV I completed the game in about 5 hours without even touching 95% of the game and didn't even realise. Having gone back through it trying to complete every quest before doing the main story line, it is all just so bitty and petty.

My system is pretty resilient, I would say; and I had a grand total of 6 things installed None of which were stated to be incompatible with each other

I found FO3 involving though.
I didn't at all. I found the characters of NV interesting and unique. There was a lot more depth to the story and the factions. Even the faction that was portrayed as the "bad" faction, the legion, had some positives behind it. The land controlled by the legion is orderly, free of bandits and raiders. Now, they didn't actually have time to finish the legion lands (because bethsesda gave them 18 months, when most games take 2 years at minimum), so it's a bit harder to fins that out, but siding with the legion is by far one of the more interesting paths to take. And there's another thing I liked, it allowed me to choose which path I go on. Do I want to side with the legion, is the bad really worth the good? Or the NCR, a force for good, for democracy, for freedom, but bogged down in bureaucracy, corruption, and a failing economy. Or Mr. House, an old-world force, powerful, but self obsessed, and with weakening chains, not even able to keep his own in check. Or do you want to go it alone, lead the Mojave in to a bright future of your own creation. And that's not even touching on the minor factions. And each companion was well thought out, with their own story-lines and quests behind them, which you can dramatically influence how they end up after the second battle for Hoover Dam.
And, with the exception of honest hearts (I love the characters, and the area was nice, but it was a bit short for my tastes) the DLCs were great. With Dead Money you had a very atmospheric quest-line and area. Extremely linear, but that's OK, because it fit the story-line. The characters were interesting, and the reward was very much worth it. With Old World Blues, it brings you into a land of mad science, with the highly unique (and extremely eccentric) mad scientists, and their creations. And finally, with Lonesome Road, you have the final confrontation with the original courier 6, and brings you back to the story of how you got there. Interesting narrative, interesting place (although I wish it has been a bit bigger), with some great rewards (advance riot armour FTW).
Yeah, I triple checked to make sure I was installing them and activating them correctly. For some reason if I accidentally pressed the wrong button by accident it would just drop to the desktop and lose any progress.
That is... odd. I've never had anything like that. The worst I've had is occasional CTDs when going into a new area, but that happens anyway with NV, and it always manged to auto-save first.
Co'tor Shas wrote: That is... odd. I've never had anything like that. The worst I've had is occasional CTDs when going into a new area, but that happens anyway with NV, and it always manged to auto-save first.
Yeah, it was irritating. I got as far as the powder gangers attacking the gas station with the town helping me, and gave up. It took about ten crashed before I got to that point, and I just couldn't be bothered to deal with that any more. I might try and uninstall and reinstall at some point, but probably not for a while.
I got into NV for the first time recently, during the wait for F4, but ended up with a major problem.
I have been going through Old World Blues. Mad science, strange experiments, and wheels within wheels schemes. what's not to love? However, every time I try and get my brain back, the conversation turns to the things we have seen, and that's where things bug out.
Obviously I have not done enough in the main game, as the conversation gets stuck in a loop about sending Bright and his followers into space, and reactivating Helios One. These are obviously the only things I have done so far that are noteworthy as the conversation goes Bright, Helios, Bright, Helios ad nausium.
Do you actually have to retrieve your brain before leaving the DLC? Because if you do, I may not play it again - especially now I have F4 on my computer to play through.
You get the choice of sweet talking your brain back into your head, or you can stick with the cybernetic replacement brain.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Has anyone been to the giant flooded quarry east of Sanctuary? It was severely bugged for me, low res textures and I was clipping through the ground.
So you can leave and continue the rest of NV Brainless? I might just try that. I presume you need to just talk to Mobius and get told you can leave, or you have to break one of the forcefields.
However, I'm fully into F4 at the moment, can't wait to actually generate my character tonight. I'm going for a slightly modified version of the one I put up earlier
Str 3 for Armourer - access to base armour mods
Per 3 for Rifleman - increased chance to hit in VATS for 2 handed non-auto
End 2 for Lead Belly - less radiation from food and drink
Cha 2 for Lady Killer/Black Widow - increased damage and dialogue to members of the opposite sex
Int 6 for Science! - access to base energy weapon mods
Agi 6 for Avoidance
Luc 6 for better criticals.
Probably nabbing Science first, then better criticals, then avoidance, rifleman, armourer, LK/BW, then finally Lead Belly. After that will probably spend a few levels increasing Per, Str, And and Cha. I'll see what happens after that depending on what happens in-game.
IIRC, you can actually choose to return at a later date and swap out organs at will. Any Organs, original or cybernetic, which you're not using are stored in The Sink.

Did anybody manage to score a bottle of Nuka Cola Quantum from Target? I have the day off today and thought I'd drop by the local store to get one. Turns out I needed to be there when they opened yesterday morning to even have a chance at getting one. Short story version: Target bought the rights to sell the soda (made by Jones Soda Co.) at the release of FO4. You would think it would be the kind of thing they would have cases of, filling the shelf. Turns out, Target, in its infinite wisdom, only supplied about 12-24 bottles per store. With no official limits per customer, and online ordering allowed. And, supposedly, many bottles were bought up by store employees before customers could get to them.

Probably, it wouldn't make sense for them to take lethal damage, as they just get knocked down instead of dying, so they would just get stuck there. And, in any case, they have health regen, so they should be fine.
Met the Brotherhood of Steel Pad in companion, who offers to recruit you into the Brotherhood. But Preston Garvey got pissy, complaining that I have a responsibility to lead the Minutemen.

I found that whilst in The Sims mode, and since it didn't do anything in the pre-War intro I just assumed it was a reference prop.
Guess what got immediately trashed.
EDIT: Checked my workshop on the off-chance the game had saved it. It had. Problem solved. Panic over.
Vault 81 is probably my favourite Vault. After all the ruined Vaults you visit and explore through the series, it's nice to actually get to visit a working Vault where the residents aren't actively trying to kill you.

I spent prolly an hour in there trying to make something happen. Suspicious of everyone, never more than twenty steps from my power armor. I'm laughing at how let down I am that people are peaceful.
Do they have utility item/ammo crafting as well? I always liked the auto-stimpacks from NV (would automatically apply when you were low). And crafting specialized ammo, or just ammo from tin cans was always fun. I also really liked powder charges, cheap mines that were pretty good early on.
Does anybody know of a place where I can find some vanilla spare parts for the power armour? Looking at both arms and the right leg here that I still need for my military suit.
Everyone's already exploring Vaults and finishing the main quest, I'm still trying to reach Diamond City and desperately trying to find a Hunting Rifle ...
Damned be my attention span of a poodle when walking in the Fallout world. ... and well, I did level up yesterday because of how much stuff I've been crafting in Sims mode.

There's a chem workstation to craft aid items and ammo.

There's a suit near a crashed vertibird roughly northeast of Concord, west of the big satellite dish. That's the only other unoccupied suit I've come across so far.

One in the National Guard armory. And I think I picked another up in West Everett Estates. Both are BIG fights so don't go in lightly. Both are just north of the river where the USS Constitution is landed/crashed. Another on top of a dish in the USAF station Olivia along the northern edge of the map. Not a bad fight, and sniping helps. You can steal a suit of almost complete T-60 from the Atom Cats in the Southeast but I wouldn't suggest pissing them off. They have a good mod dealer for armor. Haven't figured out how to make it available to me. Note I didn't tell you what sort of enemies are in these areas, since I don't want to spoil anything.

I have no idea if I'm anywhere near the story. I sort of forgot what I was meant to be doing and just went exploring and hoarding power armor. That hunting rifle does some work though. I still run around with three with various ammo and scopes. Looking desperately for more Vaults.
Also, how do you recruit more settlers? I've built the radio beacon, powered it up, made sure we have ample supplies of food water and beds.
Just wait, I suspect that there is a new settler check every time that there is a loading screen/x in game time has passed as I have had a few people turn up.

I haven't got there yet either, I was on my way there till I got side tracked with Vault 81. Vault 81is on the way to Diamond City.

Vault City was a successful Vault, so successful that they used the Vault to expand their city and it looked very nice. I had to forge citizenship to get in there and ended up being kicked out but it was a nice walk while it lasted.

Supposedly its related to your food and water production but so far I have been attacked once. The attack consisted of 3 basic raiders who were swiftly annihilated.
Hey guys, share away your characters. I'm curious if you are all looking wacky or going for a theme
I can't bring myself to get rid of my vault 111 suit. Since I can layer armor pieces on it, I can finally roam the wastelands as a Vault Dweller. Also, I remember it was mentioned in the prologue that she had a degree in Law. Welp, I sure as hell am doing my best

I did at lvl 15 using a sniper rifle, grenades and my immortal minutemen companions.
I managed to get a new settler so now I am up to 7 for Sanctuary
I also fenced in the entire town and put in machine gun turrets everywhere

They become yours, anywhere with an accessible red workbench is your settlement. I have 5 or 6 now but I don't see any benefit to them, I haven't build any shops yet though.

Yeah, it must. Yesterday, a while after I got my first tower up I remembered "Say, let me check if anyone turned up already"; 9 settlers instead of 5.
@SilverMK2 - Nice I'm still searching for a hunting rifle, but thankfully I love my 10 mm. I'm almost out of ammo after starting purging the Lexington car factory from the raiders, thou. Now I have to use their filthy pipe rifles D:
Also, this is a silly question considering I played a lot of F3 and some NV, but did it have a cover system back then too?! Against the raiders outside that same factory, I was having a huge (and fun!) firefight against several sentries, and I noticed that if I glued myself against the cover, the character would put away her weapon, BUT, if I pressed aim, she would lean out sideways or up (like the raiders) and I'd be able to shoot

When you hit around level 10 they become quite common. Mine is almost fully upgraded now
I have run into quite a significant ammo shortage unfortunately. I have lots of 5.56mm and .38 rounds (as I don't use them) but virtually nothing else.
The Advanced power armor (X-01 or whatever it is now) looks silly with that paint job. I have the military paint on mine. Have not found a way to get the Atom Cats paint for it.
Gotta love those naive security guards there. I go everywhere in power armour (because I'm a sensible traveller!) and whenever one of them quips something along the lines of "That Pip-boy better be yours, or else boy", I can't help but wonder what they'd do against me, towering over them and toting a minigun.
I named my first one "Sweetheart" and still use it a lot (Level 18).

But I love the new emphasis on scavenging. Similarly, I think having radiation eat into your health is a big improvement. These developments really help the post-apoc feel. FO3 underused them.

I'm thinking of keeping a tricked out Pipe Rifle around just to use the more common .38 ammo, so at least I have something to shoot...
As far as Energy Weapons go...do the introductory Brotherhood of Steel quest. I won't spoil it, but You get ambushed by a horde of energy weapon wielding enemies. I went from zero Fusion Cells to 500 in one mission. You also get as a reward a (legendary?) named Laser Rifle, Righteous Authority, which charges up Critical Hits fasterand does more Critical damage. I pimped it out, and reserve it for fighting tough bosses.
To get the mission, head south east from Corvega Assembly Plant and you'll pick up a distress call radio channel.
I've also got a pumped out heavy pipe rifle which I use for low lvl mobs.
And a pumped out 10mm pistol (the very first gun actually, from Vault 111) which I'm turning into a high DAM hand cannon.
And I now have a barbed wire baseball bat. I'm going to call her Lucille. I was using a short double barrel shotgun, which I've finally converted into a sawn off shotgun, and then I found a combat shotgun...
I've just created a hunting rifle sniper rifle.

Well the Fallout universe is basically stuck in the 1950's culture for two centuries...They have nuclear powered cars, soda drinks with glowing radioactive material as additives, and radioactive children's toys. I doubt they're concerned about the health hazards of lead pencils.
I'm loving my 48 damage 10mm at the moment, silencer and pimped to the balls, one shoting a hell of a lot of stuff from sneak, enjoying stealthing the game so far, and a sniper rifle with silencer is amazing for picking off those legendary creatures.

It's funny because it's true If before I used to search around for loot in F3, in here, I'm always looking for loot AND hoarding all kinds of random crap . Poor Dogmeat is being such a packmule, the poor guy is carrying pieces of power armor AND A FATMAN I got from the raiders at the car factory.
EDIT: And what was in the chest near the boss at said factory? An Hunting Rifle. HELL. YES. Now this was some fat loot!
The legendary mutation thing is annoying. I just ran into a whole pack of super mutants, 2 of which were legendary. I killed them all and one of the legendaries and got the other one down to about 10% (using most of my ammo in the process) and the utter git mutates back to full health forcing me to pull out an emergency rocket launcher (heh). All he dropped was a crappy pipe rifle as well.
I just discovered a rather interesting meat packing plant (and not in the usual 'surprise' way).
Are some of the Factions mutually exclusive? I did the first BoS quest at the police station but declined the offer to join up as I don't want to lock myself out of other Factions (Minutemen and The Railroad).
I don't think so. I've progressed far in the BOS and Minutemen and have the first Railroad mission queued up for sometime soon. I feel like there SHOULD be a restriction but if there is, I've snuck around it or haven't gotten to it yet.

No, unless you really feth it up, you can switch factions pretty easy (if it says "you're now an enemy of X" is the no return)
I know, because I swapped from the BoS to the Institute right at the end.

Not sure if it's focused much more on combat, as much as the combat has been refined and stands out more, bringing standard FPS gameplay as more of a legitimate option.
I've actually seen more options for stealth and hacking so far, which is nice.
Smooth talkers and community building are also legit options, and crafters have a wealth of things to play with.
I love how FPS it is now. I was never a fan of VATS and now I only use it to detect mines, and it doesn't hurt my gameplay. I'm actually really looking forward to starting a new character with a gamestyle I haven't tried. As you said, there are so many very fleshed out options that I doubt you'll be forced to play the same way twice.
Yeah, I only use VATS if it's my only way to survive a situation... and for bloatflies and bloodbugs because I just hate those things.
Also, just got an Assassins minigun (+50% dmg vs humans) and a freezing combat shotgun.
Guess I can retire my explosive 10mm and bleeding double barreled shotgun now.
Also, for anyone who likes sneak attack crits. Get the laser rifle sold in diamond city. The weapon shop has it, does 2x dmg on enemies with full health, couple that with a 2,5x sneak attack and you can 1 shot most things for a while.
Necros wrote: So, if I never ever played a fallout game before, will I know what's going on or would I be better off starting with an earlier game?
1950s lasted for a lot longer. Nuclear War Apocalypse. You're all caught up.
That's the nice thing about these games. You don't NEED to know anything. You'll get more if you do, like the Children of Atom Church or the Brotherhood of Steel's history, or the Chinese invasion of Anchorage, or where Super Mutants come from, or how deranged Vault-Tec really is... but honestly, that's all just background. You don't NEED to know anything beyond what is right in front of you because it's a whole new city with a whole new set of interactions. The Atom church is now just enemies instead of a group of crazies in the middle of town worshipping an Atom Bomb (from Fallout 3). There are even dialogue paths that question everything since it is your character's first interaction with the Wasteland anyway. Ghouls and Super Mutants are new to him/her just like they would be to you. Want background on them, click that dialogue option and you're set.
Necros wrote: So, if I never ever played a fallout game before, will I know what's going on or would I be better off starting with an earlier game?
There are nods to other games, but they are by no means sequential. Start with whichever one you want. They share no storyline other than the world setting, which all of them explain sufficiently.
So...is it like FNV in that there is dialogue and plot, or is it more like Borderlands; light on plot and dialogue with lots of guns. Because going by this thread, it seems more like the latter.
CthuluIsSpy wrote: So...is it like FNV in that there is dialogue and plot, or is it more like Borderlands; light on plot and dialogue with lots of guns. Because going by this thread, it seems more like the latter.
Nope, the gunplay just happens to be really good. I'd say the plot and dialogue is better then FNV.

There is SO MUCH dialogue and multiple plotlines to follow, God knows how many sidequests, so much immersion and atmosphere.
The gunplay is much improved, but it's certainly not at the expense of anything else.
Cool.. so is it more open ended like Skyrim with lots of different major quest lines, or more like the witcher 3 where you follow one big story but there's some side gigs along the way?
Necros wrote: Cool.. so is it more open ended like Skyrim with lots of different major quest lines, or more like the witcher 3 where you follow one big story but there's some side gigs along the way?
There's knda one main storyline, but you could consider the faction storylines main plots, so there's about 5-6 of them, as well as the hundreds of sidequests.
Nope, the gunplay just happens to be really good. I'd say the plot and dialogue is better then FNV.
I would hesitate to call the FPS parts of the game good; average but at least its better than FO3 but would be my assessment.
Plot wise a lot of the game is pretty light and unremarkable. I have only started on the main quest line though (I've just done the 'memories' bit) and it seems at least interesting (so its already better than FO3). Side quests are almost universally generic (go X and kill Y....), I haven't discovered a generally interesting one yet.
The main selling point in the game, like all games of its ilk, is exploration.

Yes. Each Fallout game contains historical references to past events, factions and player characters in previous Fallout games, but every game is a self contained story with a new character. You can quite easily play Fallout 2 without playing the original and follow it well enough. But there'll be lots of references, npcs are always talking about the exploits of "The Vault Dweller". If you want more detail, you'd have to play the original game and experience those events live.

It's badly optimized. A lot of people get random FPS drops and low FPS despite having a high-end machine.
While I am enjoying the game so far, I am extremely unlucky when it comes to the special weapons that the legendary NPCs drop. I have about a dozen in my stash at the Red Rocket, but none of them besides the one Paladin Danse gave me is of any real use to me. Ooo, an ability to do lots of extra damage to an enemy while they're at full health....on a flamethrower. Ooo, a nice piece of armor...that reduces damage received while I am sprinting. And so on. Other people seem to get all the cool ones, but apparently RNGesus doesn't like me.
I'm so hyped to play this once my download is done. I was kinda excited for it, but now that it's within my grasp the excitement is really hitting me. I want to do either a sniper that's a little bit of a smooth talker, or a guy that's dumb as a brick, but hits like one too. . I did the latter for Fallout One, and had a ton of fun with fist fighting rad scorpions in the wasteland. Might do the former, just because I think it'd be cool to have the dog with me, like a spotter of sorts, instead of "Bite mean man, doggy!"
I've not been using any of the legendary weapons I've found.
Modded 10mm, a combat shotgun, and a scoped hunting rifle are doing it for me at the moment.
I think I may have played a bit too much over the weekend though.
I got into work today, saw the first aid kit, and wondered to myself "Are there any stimpaks in there"
Also, how many miniguns have been modded and renamed "ol' painless"....
Loving it. This is an amazingly fun game, using a well modded pipe rifle at the moment, I keep hearing good things about the hunting rifle so that's next on my "to nick" list.
I love my hunting rifle, mostly stock so far, but I'm planning a few mods for it.
Lightweight barrel and a larger magazine.
Silencer too if I can.

Hopefully they'll shatter.

Turning off Godrays should help.
The game's so bad on my end that it doesn't even run on a system with played Skyrim on high settings. However I think the fault may be driver related (need to buy a new PC anyways).
Well some of the quest is like running into a brick wall. Getting something from a Super Mutant camp... with 3 legendary guys in there. Not enough bullets for that...
picked it up last night, very skyrimish in a good way. I think I screwed something up though, I picked up lots of armor from baddies I killed and started scrapping things and now I have a chest piece, 1 of each arm and leg on, but I'm running around naked with just a few leather straps hanging here and there. How do I get armor that covers everything? People keep telling me I'm wearing no pants.

There are two types of armours plus power armour and clothing.
Firstly there are full body armours (the first set you get will probably be Cage armour) that is a complete armour set, just like FO3. There there are composite armours (leather, metal, combat, synth etc) that have separate pieces for each limb, chest and head but which need a set of clothing underneath if you don't want to run around in your pants. Why do you think all those Raiders were wearing long johns?
The award for 'worst Irish accent of the year' goes to...whoever it is that voiced Cait. Its diabolical.
I've found lots of different kinds of clothing like a suit or tshirt and jeans, but when I put those on it unequips my armor :( guess I'll have to steal someone's long johns

The Vaultsuits and army fatigues work.
Not only that, you can further upgrade the Vault suit to up the defenses. It's the only cloth I found so far that allowed me to do that.
So, has anybody cheated yet? I confess, I've used the console command to give myself money. Yes, I could make the money legitimately by hauling all the crap guns I find back to the merchants (I already have more than enough steel, wood, and screws for my crafting needs), selling it, waiting for their money to restock, selling again, etc. Instead, I just leave most of it in storage now and use the console command to give myself money. I like to think that, at this point, I must be the biggest dealer in pipe-based firearms in the Commonwealth, and this just represents my sales. That, and I use it to buy ammo. New Vegas spoiled me with the ability to make my own ammo and even recover spent casings to make ammo from, so I do it to simulate that until a mod comes along to do it. If I can craft a high end capacitor for a laser rifle, why the hell can't I make a simple bullet? Don't get me wrong, I'm not throwing tens of thousands of caps my way, but just enough to restock ammo when I need it.
No, no cheating yet nor do I think I will. Right now I've achieved Rank 2 Gun Nut and now I'm desperate to find more screws so I can create all the mods I'm missing for my 10mm, hunting rifle and sawed-off but I refuse to console create them
Btw, found this easter egg today! If you played Fallout 3, you might remember a certain "Gary"
I have now logged in four hours (to my good lady's twenty-four...).
Overall... I like it, but prefer Fallout 3. (Mostly because it seems to take a lot more shots to take down victims the enemy than it did before - I was getting good with head shots in Fallout 3.)
My good lady likes Fallout 4 better than she does 3. (She is also skipping the plot entirely, and is instead rampaging across the Commonwealth.)
I hate to say it, but the enemies in Fallout 3 seemed to have a better AI - if a Raider had a 10mm pistol, and there was a rocket launcher within running distance, he'd run and get the launcher.
I like that VATS now slows time rather than stops it.
But Megan's look of joy when I went into Hubris Comics gave me fair warning about what was inside, waiting for me....

Agreed - and, unlike FNV, there are factions that I actually support... and two of them do not get along, at all. (I am hoping that I can get them to talk - they could *mumble, mumble* so much better against the *mumble* if they worked together!)
But the *mumble* are such *mumble, mumble*, convinced that theirs is the only right way... my hopes of that are not too high. Which means that I am mostly backing the *mumble* and the *mumble*.
The Auld Grump - I am talking about the heroic factions here, not the *mumble*.

Raider Harnesses. Oddly, some of the basic outfits worn as default by Settlers (shirts etc) can be used with armour.

I used the console to give myself a second Vault 81 disease antidote and cure myself of the mole rat disease. I gave it all to the kid. I had no idea I'd even been infected until after I completed the quest. That was it though.
Apparently the scavenging station adds random items of scrap to touchstones every so often. I'm now making plans for a sweatshop stuffed full with settlers slaving away for me.

There's a perk that will give you extra stuff when breaking down weapons; once you get that, screws will never be a problem again.
I'm at the point now where I don't even pick up basic versions of weapons and armor from bodies anymore, but just the modified ones as they break down into more components. That's mainly what I used the money cheat for, to save myself the time of picking up and selling everything. I'd rather play the game rather than play Wasteland Merchant.

So, if I store items like steel in my workbench, will it always be available for crafting or do I have to have it in my inventory like in Skyrim? And.. if I have junk on me, will it use that for crafting or will I have to drop it on the ground and the scrap it first?

I learnt this the hard-way yesterday: It will be available for that Settlement only. If you want to build stuff in another settlement, you'll have to take the materials with you. But, in that settlement, you can use it when you crafting so you don't need to carry the crap around with you.
In fact, when you create a mod it will show you what itens will be destroyed and what piece it will use to build the mod.

I haven't played the game, but I think you can link together settlement crafting stations by having villagers open transport routes. You can link multiple stations together this way, but you need a villager to be a go between for each additional crafting station added.

You need Local hero level 2 to be able to do that (or build shops, its one or the other). Trade routes share food, water and resources so once you have them set up building settlements takes very little time. Also you don't need to scrap all the gak you drag around, it is done automatically if you need screws or whatever.

I read that the power armor suits that you can find "in the wild" are level dependant. I got my T51 set at a national guard armory while on the mission to find a list BoS recon team for Danse.
I believe that. Started a new character and just found a wild T45 in a WAY overleveled place for what I was at. Level 7 fighting an Assaultotron and Sentry Bot... Not an easy fight with a pipe rifle... That would have netted my original character a T51b at the very least.
And with a new character I found a new feature. Saves are organized by character, not just by most recent. So as long as the names are unique, it's the easiest thing to do to find the last one from whichever character you want. Such a simple thing but so helpful.
In other news: found a teddy bear pooping. In glasses with newspaper in hand on the toilet. I'd give a screenshot but console.

Except they all had Missile Launchers... No one likes Missile Launcher spam.
Anyone been inside of the Museum of Witchery? Prepare to poop a little if you got low amounts of ammo/mines... or are low leveled. Got out safe thanks to gakloads of mines and a flamer. That enemy is a nightmare in such a confined space.
I'm fairly tooled up now, I might go have a look at the museum of witchcraft.
Fully upgraded 10mm and Combat Shotgun.
That should do the trick.

Well... I won't recomend going in with a 10mm pistol and a shotgun. And a fatman inside of that space is suicide. But be prepared for a suprise anyway. Or hope your stealth is really good. I sat there stuck in a corner while it kept standing there... waiting... In the meantime it was setting up it's dinner table I guess.
Level 36 and I am still scared to go back there. I might manage it if I wear my best armor. Just picked up the Spray and Pray. Now I see why people like it. Not as good as the shotgun version of that upgrade, but I have a surplus of .45 and not a lot of 12 Gauge.

Now I really want to go investigate.
The worst that can happen is I get killed and have to respawn and run away.
I did it at about lvl 18 with my last 100 rounds of minigun ammo and the only other functioning gun I had which was Kellogs revolver. Stim pack spam saw me through though, as did the attack animation that seems to do hardly any damage but takes ages.
If you really want to kill it... take a bunch of mines. Took ot half it's health with 2 bottlecap mines. You can pick up the bottlecaps later as a bonus.

I found a T51 in the exact same place (behind a master lock, through a terminal?), so I think it might not be level dependent. Did you get attacked by a sentry bot when you left the building?
My current weapon load is
Fully modded up 10mm (300rnds)
Drum mag combat shotgun (150rnds)
Hunting rifle (100rnds)
Modded .45 sub machine gun. (300rnds)
Righteous authority
Kellog's revolver (75rnds)
Miniguns (750rnds)
Fatman (4 mini nukes)
Plus lots of pipe weapon ammo, I can always pick one up if I need one.
I'm wearing combat armour over a vault suit.
I've got around 25 stimpaks and about 10 blood packs.
...10 shots from an Explosive Powerful Combat Shotgun. Problem solved WAY too easily. I wish I hadn't waited so long to do that one. Took the fun right out of it. Kinda felt like an exterminator going after a Radroach on that one.
I did Pinkman's house, does he have another quest? That's a character I want to run into more on pure creep factor alone.
So, can companions die for good like in Skyrim? So far I've left Dogmeat to fend off lots of big nasty things, only to return to my side a few minutes later. Mans best friend indeed.

Yep, sentry bot attacked me. While poking online, apparently at level 40+ is when the "in the wild" suits start becoming enclave armor.
Anyway, finally got two genuinely useful pieces of legendary gear. A synth chest piece with +2 Luck and a 10mm pistol with bonus damage to humans (which is now my stealth pistol).

Nope, they just fall down until combat is over or you use a stimpack on them.
I also food the Pickman Gallery yesterday, another nifty Lovecraft reference.
Cool. I found some dog armor, but when I traded it to dogmeat he didn't equip it :( Guess that doesn't work like skyrim? Companions just stay the same?
I have that power armor suit from an early quest, where you also get the minigun.. but it's out of juice and there's also 2 pieces of armor that are broken and just sitting in my inventory weighing me down. it keeps saying i have to fix them before I can put them back onto the suit.. do you need a special perk to craft power armor? it doesn't even show up on my list of items when I'm crafting
and do you ever get to craft ammo? I'm always running short cuz I like to spray and pray.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Yeah I love when Dogmeat takes someone down and I can just pop em in the head I was creeping through the city and some sniper guy was on a roof, he was a character with a red skull but Dogmeat kept him busy so I could take him down and I got a pretty awesome sniper rifle out of it, I think it does 68 dmg. I can 2-shot armored brutes with it.. took about 50 shots and lots of kiting for that queen crab thing at the cast though, but I would have never killed that thing without it.
You have to press a button to equip armor from Dogmeat's inventory. Same with guns on human companions. And give them ammo too... Not happy about that addition. Skyrim, just give them one Ebony arrow and they had infinite. I haven't been able to use lasers all game since I give them all to my companions. Solid slugs for me...
Power Armor can only be repaired and upgraded on the specific workstation. The engine lifter in places like Sanctuary Hills and Red Rocket. But, when it's broken, it weighs 0 so it's not weighing you down.
No you can't craft ammo for any gun but the Syringer. Conserve ammo or carry 5 types of weapons. Bolt Actions also reduce spray and praying.
68 Damage is a good amount, even late in the game. Don't forget that you can take the scope off and turn it into more of a normal gun with the same damage output. I used to use Reflex Sights on Hunting Rifles all the time.
My primary weapon of choice uses the .45 ammunition, but I keep a .38, .308, shotgun, and 10mm weapon on me at all times as well.
I'm starting to have to explore the area's where I need to start bringing my missile launcher with me, but the ammo I've saved up for that is still relatively low.
Yeah I just carry tons o' guns. That big sniper rifle I got uses .308, I'm almost all out now though. The guy also had a full suit of combat armor, so it doesn't hurt so bad now when ghouls jump the length of a football field and bite me in the face.
Can you reset your stat points? When i first started I cranked Perception up to 10, I thought I need that to be able to get the next skill below it.. now I realized I didn't have to so there's a bunch of points in there I'd love to get back to use elsewhere.
I played about 24 hours now and i still dont know what i think of Fallout 4 (on Xbox One).
What changed in relation to Fallout 3 is mostly good IMO.
But i hoped for more changes or new things in terms of environment, enemies or anything really.
The thing i like most is just wandering around.
Building power-armour is fun.
Modding weapons, apparel and building houses and settlements is fun, but i quickly lose interest.
What i have already learned, is that i do NOT like managing all those settlements that have to be "kept happy".
Nice addition for many players i presume, but not my thing; not because it is not fun, but because it keeps taking quite a lot of time, which i rather spent on quests and exploring.
I have 5 settlements now and yesterday it took me almost 1 hour just to solve all their problems.
I have decided that i will not create new ones untill i have played more actual quests and storyline.
I haven't delved to much into the settlements. I think my biggest problem with the game so far is the scope of it all. It's just a bit to much, and I can do it all.

Yeah, I almost fell into that trap as well with the stats. I caught it maybe level 4 or so.
I have like 6 settlements now, I just go and kill whoever is bugging them to get them on my side. Do you have to go and build beds and houses and everything at each one to keep them happy? I kinda just did that quest and left. I've been building up sanctuary as my home area, I don't think I want to spend all that time doing it everywhere else
I haven't done anything to any of the settlements except break their wrecked cars and stuff for scrap and build up Sanctuary with some metal houses. I haven't seen it impacting anything yet negatively.
Useful bit of info for anyone who doesn't know yet, as I had to look it up. If a companion is in power armor (like if you have an extra suit lying around your base and someone attacks, your companion might hop into the PA), to get them out, talk to them, choose the talk option, and there will be a get out of power armor command.
I leave my suits without a power core at my base, seeing as the NPC's living at the outpost will hop into suits of power armour as well when they're under attack.
Another question - is there Hardcore mode like in New Vegas? Are there actual survival elements and inventory management? Or can I carry 1000000 missiles like in FO3?

Yes there is. Its not very good though.
It's not even "hardcore" in the slightest sense. There's no food or water requirement, just slower healing + bullet spongy enemies

Nope, but chems do have weight now. Weights also done a bit better too (i.e. no more multiples of 0.5 only, a lot of junk items are 0.1 to 0.2)
I expect there to be an overhaul of "survival" mode once the real mod tools come out.

There is actually, but its very lenient. There are H20 and FOOD scales, similar to the RAD scale, which increase over time. You need to drink water and eat food to reduce the scales back to 0. I had the Vault 13 flask (DLC item) which never empties, and you automatically take a sip every 10 min or so. That one item alone completely accounted for my water needs.
I gave the mode a try but gave up because hardcore assigns weights to everything including ammo and because I'm a hoarder who sells all the gear he finds it just made the game tedious.
Co'tor Shas wrote: Hopefully, I always enjoyed that in NV. Although it made .50's for the anti-materiel rifle a pain

But that's ok, because explosives are OP
Getting frag-grenades early game is a god-send. I was attacked by a legion hit-team at level 4 or so (and they killed me twice), but 2 frags took them all out like nothing.

I was asking if it existed in FO4 I do understand the confusion though; I borked my question.
I actually thought that the survival scales were too lenient, and modded them to be harsher.
Ditto for the weight limits.
I vastly prefer STALKER's approach to weight; you can't carry a small armory with you in those games.

Whoops I totally read that wrong.. somehow.
In NV there is a food/water bar and ammo carrying weight, but in FO4 there is not (my bad)
Just got myself a complete set of T60 power armour in interesting circumstances.
I was doing a settler quest in Hyde park and there was lots of gun fire coming from the other side of the building at around the same time I started my own attack on the raider camp. I didn't think all that much of it as I worked my way into and through the building. There was a gigantic explosion but they are pretty common (usually its exploding cars) so I didn't think much of it. I made it to the roof and looked across the new empty battle field contain a load of dead super mutants, 2 BOS teams (almost wiped out) and the smoking remains of a Vertibird I can only assume that the Mutants managed to shoot down. The only survivor was a single BOS paladin on less than 5% health.
The other Paladin was nice enough to let me loot his armour from his corpse.
Soo... Apparently a certain MacCready made his way to Massachusetts from DC. I know I'm going to kill!
lol he is my follower ATM
also, I was going to be a shooty character, till I killed swan early on... now its been nothing but melee, and its WORKING despite my char having 3 str and 3 end with the rest in CHR INT and LK
I tend to not use power armour either, too slow, sneaking around and meleeing people works really nicely, the new animations they added for melle are great too! just wish there were more of them
Ya, I'm in the same boat, I'm barely using Power Armor at all. I got my stealthy combat armour and some Charisma boosting gear. I assume the main quest will require it at some point, but I'm mainly helping settlements and getting them into the Minutemen fold, then building the Artillery piece in as many places as I can.
I'm also avoiding any of the weapons that have the crazy effects like freezing and such. They just seem goofy and game breaking to me. To each their own.
Was a pleasant surprise:

I guess I'm gonna focus on building up my settlement in Sanctuary since that's the main one. Do I need to build defense towers and assign people, or can I just make a couple turrets and that's good enough? Do I have to build walls/fences all around the town too? I kinda don't wanna, but I don't wanna get raided either
So I was roaming around (seriously, I still haven't been able to reach Diamong City yet... too many places to explore ) when I killed a lone super mutant. He had "Super Mutant Orders" on him.
I was so excited, could this be a shout-out to Fallout 1's Master?! A new master mind behind the FEV and new Super Mutant creation?! WHAT DOES IT SAY?!
I'm using... rather a lot, really. Got a suppressed 10mm for James Bond-ing, an Instigator's Pipe Revolver for going loud, a souped-up combat shotgun for going louder, a pimped-out hunting rifle sniper for going long, and a half-modded scoped combat rifle for going loudish at a respectable distance.
A lot of stuff dies to the Revolver--Instigator = double damage on full health targets, so add that to sneak attacks and VATS criticals on some poor feth's head--but a fair amount needs the sniper at range, or the shotgun up close.
a noise happened that sounded like something flew across the sky and crashed, then my companion said we should go investigate. I only heard it, and didn't see what/where exactly it was. Is it a space ship?
Spoiler:
I was wandering about when that happened to me so I saw what made the noise; it looks like a twin engine flying saucer that was trailing smoke (so naturally there will be a crashed UFO somewhere on the map). When I saw it it was traveling directly south west from the Kingsmouth Lighthouse area)
Apparently the location is random so...it will be somewhere
I struck out on the robot but banged the brunette singer.
Pretty much the opposite of my real life, really.
you can bang a robot?????
i got the singer to bed with me on account of high charisma + lady killer.
man, i never thought id get a better melee then what swan drops, but I just got a sword, now I am killing everything with a red skull on it with no PA and its fairly easy!

And, I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, it does help that I am a fan of old-time radio shows like The Shadow, Green Hornet, Johnny Dollar, The Saint, Boston Blackie, Richard Diamond, Phillip Marlowe, Dragnet, etc., etc. Yes, I have the Radio Classics channel on SiriusXM favorited.
Is karma still in Fallout 4? I didn't see and karma drop after, erm, cannibalizing a corpse. And that's something that would drop your karma in previous games. So, am I just missing it saying it, or is karma gone, or did they decide that cannibalism isn't bad for karma?
There is a karma system of sorts. It's based on your companions. Your companions will react to your actions. When a companion likes you enough, you gain their perk. But you have to do stuff that companion likes to earn it.
I can't say I'll complain over it being missing. For some reason it put me off from being being a dastardly fiend. (Even in games like Red Dead Redemption I wouldn't be evil unless I was wearing a bandana so people wouldn't associate me with the crime). I don't think that'll mean me being am absolutely psychotic cannibal greedily staring at all of my new settlers, but I'm not going to be a saint, either.
I also must say that I was impressed with the options the Hearthfire DLC skyrim had, and this completely blows that out of the water.
Went to the museum of witchcraft.
Promptly ran away as fast as my legs could carry me.
Returned with my power armour and minigun.
Come get some....
Anyway, I've been trying to come up with cool weapon names.
So far my silenced 10mm is called "lullaby"
My combat shotgun is called "reason"
Anyone got any ideas for a name for my sniper rifle?

Returned with my power armour and minigun.
Come get some....
Anyway, I've been trying to come up with cool weapon names.
So far my silenced 10mm is called "lullaby"
My combat shotgun is called "reason"
Anyone got any ideas for a name for my sniper rifle?
I've also been to the museum, but the thing inside is still alive (I completed the quest without killing... Though I still wonder if I made the correct quest ending choice)
It took me a lot of time I should've spent doing quests, but look at it, just look at it! All I need to do now is get Armourer 4 and I can turn this sucker into something durable and nice looking.
As for the naming of weapons, huh, I also named my combat shotgun Reason!
I named my unsilenced 10mm the Lawbringer, my silenced 10mm HUSH and my silenced .50 hunting rifle Whisper. I also have a special laser rifle, but I rather like the pompous name it was given by its previous owner.
Missing the arms and left leg of my own full set. So far it's on some Lead T-51d bits until I get the rest. I can't bring myself to tear apart my T-60 sets for the better stats. Got the old BOS and a Winterized one. Gunners and Synths beware! At this point I can just stand in the middle of a light show in the Winterized and not flinch. It's the definition of a Space Marine in Power Armor, and damn is it fun.
How did you get the bobble head rack at the red rocket garage?
I've got one in vault 81, where I have an owned bed, but I'm using RRG as my home base.
I'd like to have a rack there.
Well, I just beat the game at level 44. Still a fair challenge if you pick bad equipment, but no trouble at all with the right stuff. So that's a typical Bethesda game for you there. Looking forward to that second playthrough in a different way.
I did some mission where I had to rescue a guy from a radio station, and got the super mutant companion.. strong I think. I had Dogmeat with me at the time, but I wanted to bring Strong back to sanctuary to have him defend it so I let him join me..then I fast traveled back to Sanctuary and Dogmeat is nowhere to be found :( I even traveled around to all of my other settlements and he's not there either. I added bells everywhere and rang them so all the people would come, but the dog is just gone :(
That happens sometimes. There's a mission where Dogmeat needs to track something and he'll appear then, no matter what. The Companions are sometimes needed for the story quests and poof away. Piper poofed on my once in a full suit of T51 Military only to be waiting at the next story mission to say some things.
oh.. guess I'll try and do the next story mission. I keep getting missions for new settlements and I'm doing a lot of side quests .. I still haven't gone to that city yet and I've had the quest for it since day 1. So much other stuff to do.
Should I ditch my companion? I usually just bring them along to be pack mules anyway.
Yeah, it was pretty terrifying at first (and I'm almost level 30) but I quickly figured out you could kite the momma from around the corner leading down from the basement stairs. I don't carry heavy weapons so it was a bit tedious putting her down. I had a much more terrifying run-in with a Deathclaw way south on the way to Virgil's. It's some kind of "robot park" with a Protectrons on Parade gimmick. Just a couple of houses surrounding a pond. Well, when you walk up to one of the houses (even in stealth) a Deathclaw pops up from the ground right in your face. I had some BOS vertibird grenades and managed to take the beast out with the the mounted minigun just barely.

I honestly don't see what you gain by ditching all companions. At least bring dogmeat with you so he can be a packmule. Lord knows how much loot he already carried for me, including a fatman and power armor pieces. Well, unless you want to be an absolute ninja and don't feel like using "stay there" orders.
Fun fact (according to reddit): You can keep Dogmeat as your companion and still gain the benefit from the Lone Wanderer perk.
I meant just send Strong away and have him guard the Castle or something, and then hopefully if I show up at Sanctuary and I'm all alone maybe Dogmeat will come back. He's the only companion I like, I like dogs better than people
Ooooh no! I'm annoyed that I've already got the Perception BHead, as I've heard that BHead bonuses are the only ones that'll stack once you have your SPECIAL at 10, so if you are already at Per 10 and THEN you pick up the bobblehead, you will get to Per 11, whereas you can't get Per 11 if you take the bobblehead at Per 9 or lower.
I'm really wanting to get all the comics and then put each one on its own stand just to show off my collections.
Distance = Sniper Rifle
Closeup = Shotgun
Workhorse = Combat Rifle
Backup = 10mm pistol
Combat = Whatever melee weapon that I can get that does decent damage at a small weight. Pickmans Knife atm.
All but the knife, that I got last night, are upgraded as far as Gun Nut 3 can get them. I got silencers on all of them, because I like to sneak and love the sound of silenced weapons in games/movies.
I named the Walther PPK (Deliverer I think it was) a Walther PPK. And I named a Thompson a Thompson. I'm boring, yeah, but with all these fake guns I am going to name the real ones a real name.
Named a double shot pistol Double Tap. If I get a VATS improved sniper I'll rename the pistol Two To The Chest and the rifle One To The Head.

Dogmeat for me constantly disobeys orders, gets in my way, pulls enemies, and often chooses to sit and watch me get mauled by a guy standing right next to him. If he wasn't a packmule he'd have gone a long time ago, because he's a constant liability. I have to order him to wait well outside anywhere that could potentially have enemies, and for some reason Wait commands act weird when reloading quicksaves, so I can expect to hear lots of gunfire and whimpering noises shortly after quickloading as he attempts to make his way through every enemy in the area go reach me. Wait also only half works if enemies are nearby, and I've had many instances of that split-second of "What the- DOGMEAT, NO!" watching as he charges into a group of enemies I'm trying to pick off.
Most of my quickloads have stemmed from Dogmeat being a complete tool, and I can fully understand why people don't use him, not least because if you want to move somewhere quickly, he will ALWAYS be blocking your movement, and he loves standing in doorways. "Sniped that guy, now I just need to move ba-DOGMEATGETOUTOFTHEFETHINGWAYYOUPIECEOFFETH!" Is something I find myself shouting far too much.
I put Dogmeat on the shelf until mods improve his AI or change his blocking problem after I got killed by a grenade blocked back by his fat doggy butt.

I love Mark 1 Advanced Power Armor.
Its so iconic Pity to hear that they dropped Karma. They are getting rid of quite a few role play mechanics it seems ;/
I don't like the look of the dialogue wheel as well. I never liked that system in Mass Effect.
So, if I tell my companion to stay somewhere.. will they always stay and guard that spot forever & ever like in Skyrim, so if I forget where that was they're lost? or will they come back home with me the next time I fast travel?
CthuluIsSpy wrote: They are getting rid of quite a few role play mechanics it seems
TBH I haven't missed karma at all. Such mechanics masquerade as complex spectra but end up being a binary (or more rarely trinary) with a lot of dead space between. The last time this was exciting was when KotOR launched. Moreover, I dislike the idea of an attribute tracked continuously (remember how you lost karma every time you stole an item in FO3?) but is infrequently and/or narrowly relevant.

Yeah I hate this in BioWare games, especially because picking X rather than W, Y, or Z often has no effect other than gradually encouraging the player to pick and stick with one dialog approach. I have been a little alarmed/disappointed to see this imported to a Bethesda game (along with protagonist voice acting) but I guess it's not like it was replacing something better.
Yes, I have only found one so far -- an eyebot model -- and it popped out of one of those Vault-Tec lunchboxes that make a party horn noise when you click on them. I have only gotten plastic spoons and other items of literal junk out of them after that, however.
