Please, please, please post the Logan/Chariot profile! Harald Deathwolf? Any sexy new models?

You will be the hero this Forum deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

Ja, assumedly it will be the Bolter as standard for the Grey Hunters and the Chainsword & Bolt Pistol combo for the Wolf Guard leader, being able to swap out for Plasma Pistol and/or close combat weapons. Works for me, (although still somewhat of a bummer) UNLESS you post the options page and prove us all wrong pretre... *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Looking at it again, I think that it could be passable without the wolves. I dont get why it has to get pulled by wolves, since it clearly has a thrusting engine on it.

I didn't realise this was the current Codex pricing? At least on the GBP store this is the breakdown:

eBook Edition: £21.99
Interactive (iPad) Edition: £34.99
Hardback Edition: £30.00

I haven't bought a Codex since the last Wolves one but this took me by surprise... iPad more without physical production costs, eBook relatively cheap by comparison... still Hardback for me as iPad doesnt work with iPhone :(

I assume the wolves provide the forward momentum and the grav technology simply keeps it in the air? I get what you're saying though, but definitely model over mind in this instance, and I don't mind

So in truth why not take a hover chariot pulled by wolves, it maybe your last day alive why not flaunt it in style? And what is more stylish than a grav boat pulled by wolves?

That or the rule of cool simply applies.

It will be plastic. The only way it will stand on that tiny fin on the bottom is that it is all plastic. Not the first time GW has done a big kit with a special character in plastic.

It's been a while since I assembled mine, but Im 99% sure the wolves had option to not use/use bionics. I know I have at least 1 extra TW leg in my box.

Look at the feet position, if it isn't the same sprus, its a very minor changed one.

Reminder from the first post:
Logan Grimnar - Lord of War - Points = Land Raider
Epic new model, comes with a sort of grav-chariot called 'Stormrider' pulled by two enormous Fenrisian wolves, but he can be used without it as well.
Stormrider - Points = 70
Treated as a vehicle, didn't get AVs, has a 4+ Invulnerable save and cannot suffer Penetrating hits (all Pens are reduced to Glances).
Gives Logan 4 S5 Ap- attacks on a turn when he charges.
Logan loses Deep Strike if he takes Stormrider
Lots of other cool rules, but didn't get those.

I'm gonna go ahead and suggest that the Chariot will be an optional upgrade for Logan, and the model will be detachable and come with a 40mm base for the characte, like the Necron CCB. That way, GW doesn't invalidate the old model completely and make many people angry, and allows the chariot to be used for a Wolf Lord.

http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Karl-Franz-on-Deathclaw

Well, not to mention that you also have the precedent of the whole "Lothern Skycutter" for High Elves.

Which incidentally if people are looking for a 'larger' boat, might fit the ticket.

I think he has to be really, doubtful they'd make a new sculpt for the Chariot but not useable in game otherwise i.e. having to use the old finecast model. Assumedly this would allow you to pop a TDA or PA generic Wolf Lord on there regardless of base size, (although does mean that you'd have a based model on top of a painted model though; been done before?

Magnetize the character to the base, so he's removable and put magnets on the chariot. Problem solved.

Agreed. Quite apart from what looks to be an absolutely fantastic Logan model, a floaty longboat-inspired chariot is thematic without being as lazy as "wolves riding wolves *mother of god memeface* ermahgerd we're geniuses" crap that was TWC. Once again though, GW seem intent on sabotaging the quality of their output with crappy "you can do it too, little Timmy!" paintjobs on the studio models.

At discounter prices, I'll be getting one of these in a couple of months just for Logan, and I'll likely save the chariot for a custom diorama when FW release Leman Russ.

Holy crap, that chariot and Logan are fantalicious!
And I convinced myself that the Wolfgurad Edition isn't overpriced:
Codex: 39€
Supplement: 39€
160p. Companies book: probably 50€
6 metal objectives: 20€ easily
12 art prints: comparing it to picture postcards I would say at least 3€ each, so 36€
really nice box: 10€

So my estimated retail price for all items combined is 194€ and GW wants 200€. So if we disregard for a moment that 39€-50€ are way too high prices for those books, you actually get decent value for your money without paying much for the rarity.

Sounds detailed enough to be either very true or very wrong, but no reason to doubt this far!

Bit odd to give both models a 4++ though, as the controlling player allocates wounds between the two anyway no? Also I thought the rider retains his attack profile and is not superseded with any others? I for one would rather the old Frost Sword/Power Fist choice, S4 AP3 beats S5 AP- any day of the week for me. Unless it is a form of Furious Charge in addition, in which case I'll take one now thank you!

Flipping Penetrating hits into Glancing hits would be great though, eliminates all chance of Immobilisation outside of Dangerous Terrain.

Y'know, I find myself warming slightly to the chariot... because it occurred to me that it's the sort of off-beat thing that if I had come across it as a conversion in someone's modelling blog, I would have said was hilarious and awesome.

I think part of the problem for me is that GW's Thunderwolves are awful.

As others have mentioned, the painting also doesn't help it any.

But as a concept... yes, it's silly. But it is also kind of epic.

I think a different paint job will do it a lot of justice. Also, aren't those TWC size wolves? Damn.

Actually it is the exact same plastic as the TWC box, 2 of the 3 wolves from the box.

Form what I can tell

Unless I'm looking incorrectly, the wolves are different. The TWC box comes with one with a bionic arm and ones with a bionic left eye, and right wolf on the chariot is leaping off of something that is not ground level.

It's been a while since I assembled mine, but Im 99% sure the wolves had option to not use/use bionics. I know I have at least 1 extra TW leg in my box.

Look at the feet position, if it isn't the same sprus, its a very minor changed one.

No, they're definitely the TWC that come in the box, they have interchangeable legs. Source: I just bought a box a week ago, so I know.

Logan looks epic. This is really turning out to be a great release as far as I'm concerned. A flyer that's awesome, the best Dread kit to date, and something new, original and unique in the Chariot. All it's missing is a new Ragnar/Ulric, but there's plenty of time...

So far, the only thing in don't like is the codex cover art, and even then, only because I love the old one.

I'm often critical of GW, but credit where it's due, this month's releases are great!

To be honest, that doesn't bother me so much. A) I hardly get to play these days, and B) I'd run Wolves even if they were the worst army out there. But yeah, the codex rumours do sound solid, and as long as I can keep P/ccw/bolter, which pics would indicate I can, I'll be happy.

On an unrelated note, I just found an old white lion chariot on my shelf, and now find myself wondering if plasticard, green stuff and bits might get me a Loganmobile for free...

OK, for the last time;

"I think it's stupid" is an opinion, to which everyone is perfectly entitled.

"This was obviously designed for stupid people" is still an opinion, but also by implication an insult since if you think a thing is designed for stupid people, necessarily you think people who like it are stupid.

It's an elementary logical progression, not rocket science; you can dress it up with allusions to "LCD" or whatever you like, but that's what it boils down to.

Well to be honest, this one is totally placating to children.

But then that'd mean I'd be calling anyone who liked it babies! Someone needs to stop being concerned that what they like defines them. You know, the healthy and responsible thing to do.

If you're looking for RAW, "In addition to the rider, some Chariots have crew or are pulled into battle by beasts. Any crew or beasts that pull a Chariot are ignored and can never be targeted separately from the vehicle. That certainly allows the narrative to be forged for them to exist, I suppose. Still kind of silly in game or reality context, though.

If it's a rocket sled and I shoot the wolves, then what? He hops off, I guess? Or are the wolves just ornamental? It makes little sense. And completely feels out of place with the Grimdark tone and more into silliness of old. Which tickles my fancy to an extent, to be honest. But it's just so dumb!

Fluff-wise, you've got a floating chariot that for some reason still needs to be pulled by mammals- I think you can pretty much go anywhere from there and it won't eclipse the original premise

It's only an assumption that the wolves are actually needed to pull it... It's entirely possible that the chariot can move under its own power, and the wolves are just for theatrics.

If that's the case, wouldn't that be like wearing your mess dress to combat? Like if he's gotta make an entrance to a planet and let the ruler in charge know who's boss, you wheel out the TugBarge. Otherwise, why in combat? All I see is him flying high and having two angry wolves dangling and being generally frustrated about the situation.

I kinda want to buy 3 just for kit bashing and fun. 1 Would be the obvious Santa Claus. 1 would be looted, pulled by squigs, and have Kaptin Badrukk on it. The 3rd I would clip the little tail on the bottom and put a big coil spring there so it looks like one of those little kiddy rides you see at a playground hahahahaha!

Well, yeah... If I were building one for my own Wolf army, it would obviously have a pair of these in front instead...
Spoiler:

What are those, who makes them, and where can I order a few?

Also: pre-orders up, decided to go all in and order the Wolf Guard edition + data cards. Happy Birthday to me from myself.

This is almost certainly the case, except Logan will still have an invulnerable save.

Im surprised it sold out, But now I'm thinking of how many stores an resellers bought it. not actual customers yet.

edit---
Part of me wants the wolfguard edition, but I just can't justify it at the 250$ level. Maybe I would at 150$, I wouldn't bat an eye.

double edit:

I can now complete my bjorn once I get the dreadnaught pack, my awesome sculpted bjorn. all will weep!

True, I've effectively doubled my Wolf Guard Terminator force with a Stormclaw of my own and half price eBay pack splitting all over the joint, covered of course by selling the Orks.

If I could ask GW one question it would be the COGs, margins and profit on that Stormclaw set, because although it probably has severe short term impact on those kits included, the stock is beginning to flush through eBay now so I should think by 3 months only a handful of listings will remain. Keep rotating the armies and include both core, (to bolster any forces and make attractive pack splits), and less prominent, (to help clear up any concerns on overstocks), units and I believe as a Salesman that they can't be doing themselves any long term damage here.

Would not be at all surprised to see these bridge the gap for all future releases, (as obviously already hypothesised by all), if the numbers are there on the back end.

The gubbins in the Wolf Guard and Long Fang Editions are just not for me. Now if they offered an exclusive model or a hard bundle deal for the Codex launch that would be attractive, make the Codex release a perfect time to bolster/begin a new army. Imagine, if only at launch you could get the Space Wolves Battleforce (£75) and the Hardback Codex (£30) for say, £80 all in.

On that note the Space Wolves Battleforce is currently delisted, but is this old news? The Space Marines one has long been replaced by the Strike Force so the term Battleforce is being replaced with bespoke packs? Only Tau, Blood Angels, Dark Eldar, Eldar, Chaos Daemons, Necron and Dark Angels remain listed as technical Battleforces... new Space Wolves equivalent for under £100?

Dashing through the snow
On a two wolf open sleigh
O'er the trenches we go
Howling all the way
*howling*
Engines on chainswords rev
Making Xeno blood fly,
Oh what fun it is to slay and purge
On a wolf pulled sleigh tonight!

My theory on the chariot is that the wolves aren't so much pulling it as they are being used as attack wolves. That's why they have the collar around the middle. The sled can move under its own power and the wolves are just brought in to bite stuff but that's just my theory.

Nope. They're pulling it, pay attention to the brace from under the sled, and the attachment to the wolves, just like a horse and carriage.

I was looking on my phone so I couldn't get a clear enough picture. I'm not entirely sold on it though, So far in terms of the new models to buy, for me anyway, it's Stormwolf > Venerable Dread > Logan Claus

Also, I hope that space chariots being pulled by X doesn't become a trend. I don't want a Necron super-chariot being pulled by Wraiths or something.

GW has officially run out of ideas. In a world where the previously anonymous Alpha Marines can now be distinguished by silly hats, this is yet another step towards the abyss of ridiculousness. Seriously... Santa Logan with his sleigh driven by Rudolph the Red Nosed Thunderwolf. Sigh... I'm calling it right now. Blood Angels have lots of jump packs. The Easter Bunny hops alot which is a type of jump. The Blood Angels will in that case have a monstrous creature with large ears that carries the coagulated blood of Sanguinus not in a chalice but a basket.

I don't dislike the chariot model. It pretty much is what I'd envision a 40K chariot to look like. The fact that such things are built however is another story.

What I am looking forward too however is those who get multiple of these for their various wolf lords and then hawk the Logan figure on Ebay. That is how I'm hoping to get a hold of one for about 20 bucks.

So its not the model, nor the price that will keep me from getting one, but rather the rules. I doubt Logan even with chariot will be LOW worthy much like Gazzy. Add to the fact I don't run Logan in my lists anyway is another reason all together. And I'm having reservations that a chariot lord will be significantly better than a TWC lord to warrant the transition.

The Venerable Hare of Sanguinus has no equals. It has acute senses and ignores night fighting (because of the big ears) and has a basket shaped grenade launcher plus a jump pack to let it hop. If GW rips off my idea, I'll be quite miffed.

Ughhh so stupid my Viking Half-Werewolf Super Space Men Warriors clad in Rune covered powered armor were completely serious and grim dark now this stupid Viking sleigh has ruined them. Typical GW anyone who likes these obviously enjoy childish things like diapers because only an infant could enjoy such an obvious pandering to a child base.

I'll stick to my other armies of Fungiod Techno-Barbarians and Vampire Angel Cursed Berzerker Super Warriors, like an adult.

......./s/ obviously

Looks great if rumors are true I'm totally making a chariot riding 6hq army.... Hmmmm maybe do Egypt Themed Jackal guys for a chariot army or something. My only complaint is now I'll need to eBay an old Grimnar just to have it since I've never bothered getting one before.

GW brushes are Kolinsky sable. They are also not bad. Not the best by any means, but they are not bad, as long as you get ones that haven't been abused in the shop and don't mind them not lasting that long.

The iBook versions have allot of extra stuff in. They ebook versions are not more expensive. They are normally cheaper.

Personally I think over all this is a good release. The flyer and the Ven Dred are both nice. The chariot is a nice model taken on its own IMO. Totally out of place, but then so are people in hand to hand combat. I think it's a nice mini, just too silly.

That was the final straw. I'm switching to Warmahordes. There, I can get a more serious looking model like a chaos infused Elf riding a sleigh pulled by demonic looking reindeer....

Logan is over the top. But, if the rules a good, be prepared to be bombarded with hover chariots in the near future.

All of a sudden I want them to leave my precio0us Blood Angels alone indefinitely....

Like so many others I do not know what they were thinking with this grav-dinghy. Why does it need to be pulled by wolves if it has the grav tech? Logan looks fine, if less dyamic than his previous sculpt, but seriously, what is this?

Also, congrats to Space Wolves players on having the only in production plastic dread multimelta.

It's not so much that one of these concepts is better or worse than the other, it's about the model fitting in the supposed tone the universe in question is trying to set.

I thought the use of thunder wolves were a dark secret of the SW they officially denied ever to include in their ranks.
Now Grimnar himself has them pulling his chariot?

Or did I read to much in to the fluff?

Anyway, Logan looks great.
Chariot I could get used to because this months releases obviously take SW over the top anyway.

In a universe filled with the souls of elves giving life to automatons, halflings with sniper rifles and orks who shoot goblins through wormholes, a hover chariot is not fitting in the supposed tone? Fair enough. To each their own

That's a kind of reductive way of looking at it. Orks have always had an inbuilt comedy value, so shooting Grots through wormholes works for them. Given the nature of Space Marines, their overarching aesthetic and fluff, a hover chariot definitely does not fit.

The wolves are like Logan's bike-lock. If he ever parks up and leaves his grav-boat outside the local shops or tavern when he quickly nips in, then anyone trying to mess with his ride gets their arm torn off.

Before 'Ere We Go and Freebootaz, Orks did not have inbuilt comedy value. Granted, those two books did come out in the later era of Rogue Trader, but I understand the idea you are conveying.

I think some folks have an interpretation of what 40K is and the chariot does not fit into that. I find that line of thought a bit funny based on what I previously laid out.

Again. To each their own. I'll gladly plunk down my model holding the souls of twin space elves piloting a giant automaton against a futuristic Viking riding a hover longboat.

Please don't get too caught up in the ridiculousness of it all. Remember, this is still, at its core, the fever dreams of a bunch of 15 year olds doodling on the back of their notebooks while listening to heavy metal. They've given it a gritty reboot, professional authors, and way more legitimacy than any 80s RPG should ever have; but this is still a game about space orcs and space elves fighting in skull covered tanks, on skull covered planets, in a skull covered galaxy.

Just let the screaming guitar riffs wash over you as you absorb the awesome that is the shortbus longship wolfcart

Thunderwolves and the smaller Fenrisian wolves crashing into Warbikers, tearing them from their rides...Blood Claws and Wolf guard smashing into the Boyz all medieval style?

I showed the chariot picture to a mate who hasn't played 40k for a few years (started in early 2nd edition) and his response was "are you serious? Games Workshop have totally lost the plot".

Honestly... whether or not you like the Logan chariot (I kind of like it in a bat-poop-crazy kind of way) it does make me feel like GW are just fishing for ideas and bloating 40k. One problem with getting rid of specialist games and pushing 40k like mad and now with the increasing release rate I can't help but feel, with releases like this, it's a game that's just gotten too big and bloated.

People are going to use the "It's a game with pain eating space pixies and people dropping from space in buckets to fight in hand to hand!" defense on me here, but doesn't tying two wolves to the front of a hover-chariot mean that it can't take advantage of being a hover chariot? I mean, what if Logan wants to hover over a body of water? Do the puppies just drown?

I like it, as stated earlier, but I do think it has some issues.

My main issue is the ground running wolves with a landspeeder type skimmer.

Maybe if they weren't chained to it, so they could ride it with him then jump out in an assault(fluff wise).

It also makes me curious about the rules...is it a skimmer? I can't help but think they put the wolves there to deny it skimmer rules.

I think chariots are really weak now with the new rules. Characters can't leave them so no to the person who asked if Logan could assault out of it. They usually have two hull points and if they die, so does the character. You could lose 300 or so points of Logan Claus by being glanced twice! To me that is too easy for your opponent to do. He is more likely to survive on foot. If he deep strikes he is not really much slower either. Also I don't think the new plastic is as nice as my older metal Logan. Now if it is AV14 and has an invulnerable save it might be ok but I really don't see why characters have to die with their chariot.

I don't take my 40k too seriously but I also don't take it that stupidly.

I know for some people it's still within their realm of silly, but for me it's pushing my limits, even by 40k standards it's pretty silly.

As a SW player I would have much much rather they pushed the "Space Viking" thing more with this release instead of wolfy mcwolf murder wolf claw fang of murder wolf.

But then, I also dislike TWC (awesome models, stupid concept).

Im loving the grimnar chariot combo. It fits the space wolf norse/theme. I hope we get more detailed pics soon. Myonly complaint is logans hair looks rushed, but i srill love the model and his hair is probably due to it being in plastic.

I remember when people complained about thunder wolves being stupid. When people complain I remember that this game is a sci fi fantasy game that is no where near reality. As for those talking about hover chariots and wolves... the chariot hovers but has no propulsion... therefore he is using the powerful wolves to pull him because he is fighting ground troops, not airplanes lol.

Ok I knew about the blasts/templates, but I didn't not know about the assault issue(haven't actually played a chariot in 7th).

That changes my mind about the chariot dramatically, It needs to have a high AV then, 13 minimum.

Just remembered the HP changes from pens in assault. I hope they made the chariot worth it.

Guess I should actually sit down and read the chariot rules again.

RIP Space Wolves. There is literally nothing good left about them. The Thunderwolf Cavalry last time around were bad enough. The Wolfboat Clownshoe Gunship with a freeze ray... Good lord, where to even start with how awful that is, and well, Loganator on a Wolf Sled, that's just the nail in the coffin. The Space Wolves are ruined beyond repair.

The dismal FY14 reports for GW had me a bit troubled at first, but maybe its slow, inevitable death is for the best, lol.

To be fair, I more or less have quit 40K, though it was "too late" years ago. But the overall aesthetic of the game is important to how I enjoy it. And this kind of shark jumping dampens my entire love for the universe. So you can take your immature, snakry reply somewhere else kiddo.

The chariot is no more stupid to see on the battlefield than this...

or this...

or this...

or these guys

My point being that 40K has a long tradition of putting out models that have no place at all on a futuristic battlefield with laser guns and mini rockets. Let alone a swirling melee with chainsaws and gauntlets of such destructive power it can melt tanks in half.

However, imagine the sinerio where Logan has to go to some diplomatic meeting and needs to come from a position of strength and he shows up in the chariot. That would be impressive and totally a SW thing to do.

So yeah, I like it, just not on the battlefield.

I think the Chariot is something only a guy super into the modeling side of the game could love. (Unless its rules make it OP as hell). At the end of the day you've got on foot Logan to be a LoW in your flffy/competitive game, and you've got a space Viking wolf chariot to ride your display case. <shrug> It's clear to my line of thinking, someone in the shop was like "I've got this fething amazing idea!" and the boss said, just run with it. In the end it is a bit silly, but you have to encourage guys to go out on the ledge.

Of course if they give it super OP rules, I am calling shenanigans just so they could sell that model. But the number of guys who will complain while fielding it will be awesome.

When I first got into 40K it was as a means to be creative on a small, quick scale (painting and modeling little plastic dudes). I chose Space Wolves as my main army because they were cheaper that Witch Hunters and the models were better than the Dark Eldar (8 or 9 years ago). Also, Space Wolves were viking werewolf super solders from the 41 millennium. These things still hold true. It's tongue and cheek ridiculousness. Always has been. Plastic injection mold design tech has just gotten better.

Logan's Chariot has pretty much point proven that they've taken the SW schtick past theme and into what was once only the realm of late night 4chan parody.

40k has always had some ridiculous things, but this is just so absurd as to be irritating.

They SOOO should have went with bran redmaws fluff and hq choice. Sure bran has rules In forge world, but there is no model for him and they could have easily converted him to the codex.

Want wulfen! Not Viking....but many people wanted space Vikings back. You got it! Grats!

40k had this ridiculous over the top aesthetic for as long as I can remember. There's a fine line between Space Pope hovering into battle to guide his fish-goatmen (he doesn't actually attack), Mr. Inquisitoir with his pimped out walker, and freakin' Santa Grimnar. The other models shown at least "work". There's no leap of logic to them when you visualize them unlike a grav boat with jet engines that is pulled by wolves. So what happens when the wolves get shot? Does the jets not work on the boat? Why is Logan than going into battle on a busted boat? And he's a melee dude, who is he attacking from that high off the ground?

Nothing adds up. And saying "don't take it so serious" is from the people making sure GW can do no wrong to their "not serious business" serious business that's listing more than Logan Claus with flat tire dead wolf. Fun anecdote, I shopped around the image of our new fluffy friend and pretty much the general consensus was "lol, wat." I didn't meet anyone at the game store that was so excited like folks here save maybe the people in my category of "that's so stupid, I have to make it even more stupid and paint and display how stupid it is."

This is after I saw folks making fun of the flying freezer, being flabbergasted at the incredulous ability for GW to forgo a thesaurus with Wolverine McMurder-StabStab, and now this "thing." And I bet you it's going to cost a lot of money. Not so serious model, serious model cost. The probable final disconnect for this piece.

I have to my 2 cents into this. All the models above posted/mentioned, are fine. I own Karamazov and Sanguinary Guard. But if you lined them all up, I would pick out Logan and his spiffy ride over the rest of them. It's pretty awesome and fits right in with the theme GW went with SW's this time, which to me is, "get in your opponents face and chop them up all close and personal like"

Not really keen on the chariot thing, not sure what its got to do with the whole viking / norse theme, its not that ridiculous in the grand scheme of 40k fluff though, just not appropriate for a space marine army in my opinion.

I really like the new Logan, to the point that I'd consider a small detachment of SW with Thunderwolf cavalry, Fenrisian wolves and other such beastly things.

But then again, I play UM and GK as my primary armies, and have some BA because I like the Sanguinary Guard.

Sounds like a mirrored statement of your own reflection, unless you'd actually like to weigh in on the topic with something that adds to the discussion. Or are we finally in agreement with Santa Grimnar that the shark has been jumped firmly into the realm of LCD placating schlock? 'Cause I already called that with Murderfang satiating his Murderlust with Murderclaws.

And the new Logan models is awesome, for the record. If he's sensibly priced as a solo model, I'd really consider painting him up. If he's $30+, or worse, only bundled with his sweet ride, I think they've gone off the deep end of reason. Making a Lord of War is also poor form, IMO.

To be honest I never really realised they had chariots, sleds I know of, but never heard of them having chariots, I guess they were more for transport than fighting.
I guess it makes them more applicable than I thought.

I looked them up and I feel like it's a neat concept, but I think GW did a very poor implementation that makes it look too "Saturday Morning Cartoon" versus "Norse God of War".

I think the big problem is just throwing the mini on the back not making a pose of command holding the reigns. Also, it's the combo of wolves + hovering that takes the cake.

Ummm... Guys? Could you perhaps stop making a non-factual statements about the Gods and culture of my ancestors?

A few corrections if you dont mind:

1). No, we did not use chariots. Owning a chariot in the Scandinavian pininsula is a truly stupid thing, you need open ground for chariots, and this place is made up of dense Taiga forest, lakes everywhere, boulders, hills, mountains and fjords.

2). Our gods did not muck about with horses, that was just that one time Loki did it and he was a female horse at the time.

3). Viking is not a name for a demographic, it's a jobdescription, in other words "raiding the rich weaklings on the continent and beyond".

Not in war, sledges to ride on snow, sure, boats to sail (which is what you linked) and carts to get your stuff around sure, but not war-sledges or chariots

Now I have talked to much about true Viking equipment and culture, I want to add that I LOVE THE CONCEPT OF AND MODELS IN SPACE WOLVES (including Grimnars chariot) it doesnt have to be true to be cool... in fact most people in scandinavia during these times were pity and booring peasants like everywere else, not very fun at all.

I don't care if the chariot fits with a "Viking" theme...after all, Space Wolves have always been a pretty OTT idea of Viking-ness ,with plenty of artistic licence brought in, bolted on to the usual Warhammer madness.

What bothers me is the look of the thing. I wouldn't even mind the wolves pulling it if they'd been released as separate models. It looks like a flying rowing boat with random bits glued on that looks like it would shoot forward and decapitate those wolves if they stop suddenly. When I look at it all I can think is "Oh dear."

I don't mind the separate Logan model at all, I do wish they'd just stopped there...

At the end of the day, the chariot makes SW feel like a clown-shoes army. Previously, Orks/Orcs/Goblins were a clown-shoes army and I'm fine with that. I like those armies largely because they are clown-shoes armies. I tended to like that my SW army was NOT such an army, that's why I'm really struggling to like Logan Claus.

Like the chariot itself or not, it is kind of nice to see some diversity in Space Marines as a whole. I enjoy that GW is branching things out some and the fact that chapters that are not in the C:SM being different is a very good thing. Who wants to play with an army that is just a slightly reskinned C:SM army? I personally don't want it to feel like the Blood Angels, Greyknights, and Space Wolves are super close to being the same. The personality of the armies and how different they are is one of the biggest reasons people play them in my experience. Is the chariot wonky as all get out? Yes! Is it cool that a space marine chapter has something with chariot rules? Yes! Diversity makes the game way better. C:SM is good and there has to be a baseline sure, but that doesn't mean that other armies that still have their own books and are uniquely different should be watered down and just be basic supplements to the core space marine builds.

I'm enjoying what I've been reading in the 7th ed rules, I haven't played yet but I like it so far. So hopefully they did the Wolves justice!

Watch as the leaks are wrong and it turns out that GW decided against releasing the figure and replaced it with something else. Or, when the model itself comes out it looks great.

Seriously, the interwebs are all abuzz over a miniscule image- I'm personally holding off on the complaining until we see an actual picture of the model that's in decent resolution, or better yet until the model is officially released.

I mean, this is the image we're carrying on about?

No it does not. The term 'Viking', as we know it, was a term invented long after the vikings age.
The original way of using the word is for example "At drage i viking", which roughly translates into "to go exploring". Some Scandinavian areas used the word 'viking' as a description of a sea Warrior, or warrior of the sea, but that was not a common usage for the word.

In the old Norse language, víkingr means a man from vík, where vík may have the sense of a bay, or the specific bay called Víkin in the south of Norway.

Yeah I do as well. This Grimnar looks like he's staring at his axe screaming "LOOK AT MY GIANT AXE!!!". The giant gold wolf's head looks too big as well. I don't hate the new Grimnar or anything, but yeah, not a massive fan either.

Unlikely.
Or, when the model itself comes out it looks great.
People always say this yet for me it's never true. I can see enough from the little blurry pic that I won't like it because it looks stupid.

You could just not use it. Your Space Wolves army doesn't have to be defined by what models are available in the model range.
No, I don't have to use it, but it's still disappointing. IMO it will be even more disappointing if it's actually good on the table, lol.

You can barely tell what it is.

Seriously? If you can't tell what that is then you just have bad eyes or something. Or you need to stop looking at Dakka on your phone and get a proper monitor.

It's clearly the Logan Grimnar model we've already seen by itself in a larger image, sitting inside a boat-shaped chariot with skimmer anti-grav plates on the bottom and little wings and intakes on the sides, apparently being pulled by two wolves which look to be attached to the chariot with cables and harnesses.

We're not talking about some fuzzy image taken with a 10-year-old flip phone during an earthquake like some leaks in the past, it's actually pretty crisp and clear despite its size. And that's coming from someone who has poor vision. You don't need to see huge, HD pics and a 360 degree rotation to know it's a stupid design, it's plain as day right now, and while I can only ever speak for myself I'll say that you could put that model on a billboard and I'd still think it was ridiculous.

As for your army not being defined by the sillier models in the range, yeah, right. I play Tau, I know better. Be prepared to hear all about how stupid Santa Grimnar is whether you have the model or not, and to have its very existence constantly used as proof that your army's concept was silly from the get-go and its continued representation in 40k lore is ruining the game for everyone.

I like the chariot because it's the sort of thing you won't find in any other Space Marine army. If you're going to be a separate Space Marine chapter with your own friggin' codex, you really should have at least some units that would make someone say "Wow, we'd NEVER see something like THAT in any other Space Marine chapter".

1. Indeed I'm not going to fully defend the chariot (it's defo strange/different) but the Grimnar model looks boss!

2.Also I think we need angles of it, currently it's looking dumpy which is not helping.

3. GW have painted it in there official bling colours pallette too, never good.

4. A added bonus for everyone is the ability to get two more wolves, who from the tiny pic look epic, is great for converting more unique TWC!

5. Everyones heads fluff works different but too me I see the chariot as jet powered and the wolves as leashed so they kill stuff near the chariot and not just run the frell off! I don't know about you guys but when I take my dog for a walk it has a lead on but that doesn't make it my power source to move forward?

6.Rules wise it might be coo if it can join TWC too.

3). Viking is not a name for a demographic, it's a job description, in other words "raiding the rich weaklings on the continent and beyond".

Viking in fact comes from a verb where a group would go out viking and try to win loot. These peoples were generally from Denmark or Norway of the descendants of the people from these region that had settled elsewhere like in England or Normandy. Then they would go home and farm their lands. Job Description isn't quite right since most of the people who would go on raids were farmers or traders most of the time and just went on a few raids to make lots of money to "retire" with. You learn all sorts you didn't after taking a viking history course.

I'm sure we can argue long and hard about the meaning of "Viking", so I'm just gonna put this here:

Viking (n.) Look up Viking at Dictionary.com
Scandinavian pirate, 1801, vikingr, in "The History of the Anglo-Saxons" by English historian Sharon H. Turner (1768-1847); he suggested the second element might be connected to king:

The name by which the pirates were at first distinguished was Vikingr, which perhaps originally meant kings of the bays. It was in bays that they ambushed, to dart upon the passing voyager.

But this later was dismissed as incorrect. The form viking is attested in 1820, in Jamieson's notes to "The Bruce." The word is a historians' revival; it was not used in Middle English, but it was reintroduced from Old Norse vikingr "freebooter, sea-rover, pirate, viking," which usually is explained as meaning properly "one who came from the fjords," from vik "creek, inlet, small bay" (cognates: Old English wic, Middle High German wich "bay," and second element in Reykjavik). But Old English wicing and Old Frisian wizing are almost 300 years older than the earliest attestation of the Old Norse word, and probably derive from wic "village, camp" (large temporary camps were a feature of the Viking raids), related to Latin vicus "village, habitation" (see villa).

The connection between the Norse and Old English words is still much debated. The period of Viking activity was roughly 8c. to 11c. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the raiding armies generally were referred to as þa Deniscan "the Danes," while those who settled in England were identified by their place of settlement. Old Norse viking (n.) meant "freebooting voyage, piracy;" one would "go on a viking" (fara í viking).

I think when we talk about "vikings in space" people know what we're talking about.

first of all, the first Logan was sculpted by Jes Goodwin, who is the master of Space Marine sculpting...
he brought it to the Amsterdam store for an open day in 2000, before it was released, and was very proud of how he presented this aggresive character...

second, i see a charging berzerker, not a hunched old man...
i was blown away when i held the master model in my hands that day...
it was the first action packed Terminator armored sculpt GW ever released...
the new one may be bigger, but he is not better, as far as i'm concerned...

i think you must be misremembering the mini, or only seeing it from a bad angle...
here is my 360 view of the model...
are you telling me that this charging Termie looks like an old man with a spine problem???

personally, i prefer the original, but i'm sure i'll end up painting the new one for somebody...

cheers

He's an American. Americans don't use "as" like that. It was very confusing when I first moved to NZ. Everything was "ugly as" or "sweet as" but nobody would say what exactly they were comparing it to.

Back to the current topic on hand, I prefer the old Logan. Charging into battle, axe drawn back to strike, teeth bared in a howl of fury. This new guy is looking at his axe going "This is my axe! There are many like it but this one is mine!"

He looks a helluva lot more regal with the new sculpt.
I can only think of Conan author Robert E Howards early king Kull strory called "I rule by this axe!".
Anyone try to oppose his reign on the battlefield get to know "I RULE BY THIS AXE!".
Just ask the grey knights what that means.

Edit, ok I got it wrong, its supposed to be "By this axe I rule". Anyway...

I really don't see the chariot, personally. Assuming we accept that medieval-style close combat happens on a regular basis in the 40k setting, the vehicle makes perfect sense for Loagn. Space Wolves are all about the deeds of their heroes, and those deeds will be performed where the fighting is thickest. Having a chariot allows the troops to easily tell where he is, it gets him in the thick of the enemy with more protection than walking, and allows him to fight from the outset and keep mobile, unlike a Land Raider. It also means his retinue of Wolf Guard can instead perform other tasks such as leading the troops elsewhere.

Furthermore, it gives him the bulk and presence to take on the mightiest enemies alone; fluff-wise, at least, he'd be better off charging a Hive Tyrant on that thing that on foot. Space Wolves are all about the heroes, and in every way, the chariot puts Logan front and foremost.

His shoulder PADS are level with his head. His arms could travel down the inner sleeve, armpit to armpit, with plenty of armour between the surface of the pad and the surface of his skin. This would make him more recognisably proportioned.

I always figured the proportions of both Logan and Njal was made so the silhouette of them would look like a large wolf (with the pelt head on top),
therefore making their actual heads somewhat off in the model dynamics. That also make more sense with logans hunched stance.
But ofcourse, if I am the only one who see it this way...

It clearly went over your head, let me explain.

We weren't saying we never heard of the phrase "bad ass", he was making a joke saying you should have meant it as "bad as". See, down here in Aussie and New Zealand, they have this little habit of saying something is "something as" such as, "Oh man, this ice cream is tasty as!" or "That Logan model is controversial as!". Most often here in New Zealand it can be heard in the phrase "Sweet as" meaning cool or alright.

Hopefully that helps clear up any confusion.

Old Grimnar sculpt is one of the highlights of the special character range. If I ever see one up on ebay I'm going to pick him up just because. He's one of the few character models ever made to be straight brawling in his pose.
