Although their use of snapshots and pre-releases has done a lot to help find major bugs before release, there's often still something that doesn't show up until much vaster numbers of people are playing it.
Mojang are releasing it on a Tuesday for this same reason, so they have most of the rest of the week to fix any issues that pop up. Whether there are any problems or not, the new update should hopefully be nice and stable by Friday evening (whether it is 1.8 or 1.8.2 or 1.8.11 by then)
So I will aim to update the server either Friday evening or early Saturday morning next week.
Sounds good to me! I'll get to work on the new stuff when that happens.

I think there was a bug a while back when they changed the way skins are handled and I'll have to give you the heads again.

The public Mesa base is now pretty much finished. I'll probably continue to potter about making cosmetic changes here and there but I think the main structure is pretty much done.
You can get to the base by following the North trunk of the Nether Hub all the way to the end and turning left where signposted.
Happy mining!

Everyone and his dog is trying to update Minecraft right now, it might just be taking forever to download the updates.
If that's not the case and you're still stuck:
Start with the simplest non-destructive option, create a new launcher profile (in case your current one has corrupted somehow or not installed the update correctly).
Start the launcher
In the bottom left, click "New Profile"
Give it a suitable name, say UpdateTest
Tick the Game Directory box and enter a alternate path to install this test profile to (e.g. change the .minecraft ending to .minecraftTest)
Click Save Profile
Select the Profile in the dropdown in the bottom left
Click Play
See if it works and report back.
Special word of warning to those of you updating to 1.8. If you update your single player worlds to 1.8, and then switch back to 1.7 to play on the server (or for other reasons) DO NOT open your updated single player worlds in 1.7. There has been a change to how items are stored and if you open 1.8 worlds in Minecraft 1.7, all chest contents are deleted (and other bad stuff). Best course of action is to make a backup copy of all your single player worlds before updating to 1.8. Backups are always a good idea in general anyway.

Instructions followed and it works just fine. Based on this it turns out that the problem lies with a resource pack (Sphax) that was supposedly updated to be compatible with 1.8. I'll go back to the Sphax website and see if there's any documentation on it but failing that I may need to go hunting for a new texture pack.
darkinnit wrote:Special word of warning to those of you updating to 1.8. Thanks for the warning! I'll stay in 1.7 (barring tests) until DakkaDakka updates, just to be on the safe side.
ETA:
I traced the problem, not to the resource pack but to Java which wouldn't let me assign more than 1Gb RAM to Minecraft! Uninstalled, reinstalled, edited the memory allocation, and now have texture packs and 1.8 working in perfect harmony.

Messing about designing my new house. At the moment I'm currently putting together a floating island over my existing (unfinished) home. Once the basic layout of that's done I'm going to plunk down a ruined fort on it, with levels descending beneath the surface. It being a floating island however, not all of the fort's lower levels are going to be particularly intact, with hallways being exposed to the outside, jutting out the sides of the island. Here's what I've come up with as far as planning the dungeon part of the fort.
Uh, yeah, the upper levels of the fort will be a bit more lived in, with the descending levels looking more and more abandoned. The torches being necessary for mobs unfortunately. However the cells themselves have a single block that's at light level 7, so as long as the doors are kept shut I may just have some prisoners.
Your average cell:
...And well, one which hasn't seen much housekeeping. *Eugh, its going to be a right bugger silk touching all those ferns.
Then back up the stairs to the dungeon's entrance. Not quite as much of a state, but still not a shining marble castle.
I could probably do with piling up slabs to represent debris in places, though I didn't want to make it a bother moving about. Given how I'll be building this I'm probably going to have to plan out every section first before I put it together on the server otherwise it could be too low (at the moment the island's ground level's about 150 blocks above actual ground level) or some ill conceived business will occur,
Edit: Actually youknow what would be awesome too? Dirt/ Grass slabs. No really. As someone who doesn't like mobs spawning within ten miles of their house I do hate having all those torches turning my lawn into a pin cushion. I aught to just make the regular standing torch texture transparent as I only use those for lighting up large areas anyway. It'd be nice though to be able to have darkness without mobs spawning, which is why I say dirt slabs. That or one of those FtB torch things which don't allow mobs to spawn for dozens of blocks. ...Just anything to keep my garden tidy. =(

That is a seriously good looking interior, I'm really looking forward to being able to make mossy brick and cobble once 1.8 hits the server. I particularly like your use of ferns, really adds to the feel of the place.
Wyrmalla wrote:...And well, one which hasn't seen much housekeeping. *Eugh, its going to be a right bugger silk touching all those ferns.
Unless I've missed something, why don't you just use regular shears on them?

I hear you! The only way I've managed it is by using carpet tiles and leaf blocks over jack'o'lanterns ... hardly an ideal solution but it's not too awful.

Heh, yeah I realised that shears would do after posting that. Still I'm not sure if the tall ferns are just bonemealed regular ones or some variation. Meh, I'll work it out.
I'm having a go at the exterior at the moment. Its looking like a straight copy of this at the front, but that image only shows the entrance, so with the rest I've been just throwing it together. I'm not entirely sure about the style, its a bit too like a temple, but it'll work out. That'll do for the main building, with there being ruins surrounding it on the rest of the island (as well I need at least one room which doesn't have a massive hole in the roof or exposed rafters. Doesn't bode well for sleeping when there's a leak).
The world height's 256 right? Just so I can build this thing right up at the maximum elevation so there's more room for the underground sections (oh and the view'll probably be nice too).

Yep, pretty certain that you get double-height ferns by bonemealing the regular ones.
Exterior is looking very nice, I see what you mean about looking like a temple ... my only suggestion would be to decide what you do want it to look like style-wise and then do a Google image search, see if anything inspires.

Maybe try wood for the roof instead? With a wood roof, I think it would get a lot more of an 'abandoned Manor house' feel rather than the temple one.

Hmn, what am I going for? Um... yeah, that'd be nice to know. Just a stone fort of some description. Not a European castle is about the extent of what I know I want. The problem with having the main building ruined is that rain will come through, and that mobs could spawn. Rather I'd like to have one section which is somewhat intact (even if there's upper floors which have holes) which is then attached to ruins. I had a go at expanding the temple design a bit, but it doesn't look quite right, so I'll some up with something else eventually. ...I have the lowest level worked out, but ah, not the sections above it. Smart guy.

Rain is a bad thing? I thought it would add to the atmosphere to have the rain making it's way in. You could have a hole in the roof with a cauldron beneath to catch the water, making it look more dodgy but looking like someone is trying to live there. Or that room with the skeleton head might have water source blocks above the roof, maybe a pool or flooded room so droplets of water seep through at places, explaining the overgrown plants and giving it a more dank feel. But that probably has nothing to do with what you're going for.

So, a slight snag on seamlessly upgrading the server world to 1.8.
The rule for underwater monuments generating in existing chunks is that the existing chunk must have only been visited/loaded for less than 2 minutes. From my sample testing, most underwater monument locations don't seem to meet this requirement and so monuments are not being generated in existing chunks.
However, there is a workaround.
I'm going to take the server offline and fly around all the existing ocean chunks on the server, so that it stores in the data files where all the monuments are supposed to be. Then I will open the world in MCEdit and mark those locations for "repopulation". This causes the monuments to be generated when the world is opened in Minecraft again.
This work may take some time to finish, so the current world will be offline while I do this.
However, I thought, I could leave a temporary server running for people to play on while I'm working on the current one.
Let's see, what do we have here? Something for Minecraft 1.8.... How about the Beta Minecraft 1.8 Dakka world from 2011:
Yep, it's back. Although the upgrade has had some effect on it. All chests are missing, paintings popped off and doors are doing that thing again. It's still fun to explore and reminisce (for those of you who played this world) and read the weird and wonderful signs that are around the place.
Most nether portals got disabled in the upgrade too (although I've fixed the spawn one), you can relight them, but they may not link up with their intended locations without some leg work.
There won't be the 2 hourly restarts on this world because it's temporary. I'm not going to be saving any changes long term and if it crashes hard, I'll just revert it back to its original state.
Once I have finished working on the current world I'll take the 2011 world offline and put the current one back online.

I'm doing it on as much existing ocean as I can without taking too much time. This world has a lot of ocean, but I hope to have it finished at some point today.
Repopulating the areas won't give the new stone types (other than the monument stone of course) I think. I'll double check when I get to that stage and let you know.
So far I'm about 1/3rd of the way through the first stage (gathering monument locations).
Also, as recommended by Binidj, the 2011 world is now in peaceful mode so that creepers etc don't annoy anyone while exploring on a nostalgia trip Automatically Appended Next Post: Took a brief break, but I have finished the first stage (getting Minecraft to store all the monument locations). I'm now onto the stage where I go through the world in MCEdit and mark those locations for re-population.
There's 53 to do. Some did manage to generate a monument, but I'll need to check them all anyway.

For some reason I was thinking that rain put out torches,Yeah, that does sound good. Having random pools of water and exposed soil would do good for the effect.
Oh and Darkinnit what are the new stone types? If they don't generate perhaps you could set up a trader at spawn who'll swap some stone bricks for them on a one to one basis?
Edit. And I tried having a go wandering about the old server, but I kept losing connection. Damn, and here's me making up a load of signs to write silly messages and everything... =(

The new stone types can be found on the wiki:
http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/1.8#Blocks_and_Items
They will generate in new chunks and have a crafting recipe. However, they're more plentiful than the gravel and dirt pockets you get underground, so there's really no need to set up a villager for them. Automatically Appended Next Post: Finished marking locations for repopulation. But I'm going to take a break for dinner and some TV before final testing and uploading the world back to the server.

The FtB server had crashed as it occaisionally does. I've restarted it. Automatically Appended Next Post: The Dakka server has now been restored and updated to 1.8
I also found that the new stone types have generated in the ground beneath the underwater monuments that I had to restore. Some monuments did generate on their own and so won't have the new stone types underneath them, I guess you'll just have to see if you're lucky when exploring.

Thanks Dark for managing the update, I appreciate you giving up your Saturday for us!
Unfortunately the Vanilla server crashed late last night (didn't come out of a regular server restart) so I was only able to indulge in the 1.8 world briefly.
I discovered that some (though not all) of my rose bushes and lilacs had spontaneously uprooted. So if you're a keen flower arranger, be aware that you might have to do a bit of repair work to restore your displays to their former beauty.
If you cause a creeper to detonate in a constructed area it's good manners to fix the damage as best you can and, if you can't make the whole thing good, to let the owner/builder know about the damage. The base of one of the mesa staircases and half of the attached bridge was wrecked when I checked on the (unexpectedly flooded) decorative cave for uprooted flowers last night. Accidents happen but it would have saved me a (long) journey had I known that I needed to bring building materials.
I have never played Pixelmon, seen some LPs of it but wasn't inspired.

It seems that the server doesn't crash, it just sometimes doesn't completely stop after it has shutdown for a restart. Then it can't start again because it's already running. I've brought back my old crash detection script to handle this for now as I need to go out.
If the server doesn't restart properly, after 10 minutes the crash detection should kick in and force a restart. When I get back I'll look for a cleaner solution.
The server is up.

This is probably a vain hope, but if anyone happens to have an enchanted book with the Depth Strider enchantment on and is willing to trade for it can you let me know? I'd like to take on the Ocean Dungeon I found, but currently the Guardians are running (swimming?) rings around me

By all accounts Depth Strider is a fairly common Boot enchant, you might be better off just making and enchanting boots till you get it ... chances of getting it on a book are slimmer.

Took me a long time and spending levels on lesser enchantments due to how the system works now, but I finally found it. So thanks for the heads up about the boots thing

I have a portal up the North Tunnel. You follow the sign for Sky_Slasher78 (Me) then about halfway along the path to my house there is a left turn marked by a torch which leads to the farm project.
And the co-ords for the overworld are x: -1320 z: -2883.
Lots of sand and gravel is appreciated!

If there's continued consistent updates, no monetisation, putting the food down on mod makers and youtube videos, or stripping away the original developers for their own then ...yeah whatever. Allow Mojang to do their thing and this shouldn't go too horribly. It seems like an odd business move on Mojang's part (I thought things were going pretty well for them all things considering already. They're one of the indie scene's largest success stories), but that's only based on my own limited knowledge of them, and is that money all too amazing? The whole thing seems rather odd, but we'll see (and if it is true then hopefully the new owners won't pull a "future updates will be made exclusively for the Windows 8 and Xbox One platforms"). =P

I dunno, Notch does look like a guy who wouldn't say no to a diamond studded hat... Not a full set of Diamond Armour mind, but I'm sure he could buy himself a hat and part of the way to researching a Silk Touch pick.
Oh and does Notch still own the game? Huh, I thought he gave it all the Jeb, but I guess that was just the development reins. Fair enough, guess Jeb can just have a wooden pick or something for his trouble.

Did I just hear "All New Dirt Expansion, only $19.99"? Uh, let's hope for the best, and that Notch signed a very secure contract which doesn't push Mojang by the wayside. Obviously this is Microsoft trying to prop up the Xbox One, so let's expect them shifting more support to that platform. It'd be silly though to consider the PC (even if Minecraft does wind up becoming a Window's exclusive for some reason) will fall by the wayside however given how popular the modding community is (or is Microsoft one of those companies which hates mods because it means there's point in $19.99 expansions which add a single new retextured dirt block-actually just the old dirt texture).

Sorry for the delay. Wasn't sure if you'd logged in and played since then, so I've put your stuff in a chest next to your playerskull.
As for the other stuff above, I'd take any news reports with a pinch of salt until they're officially confirmed by either company. You only have to look back a week or two to the supposedly "complete" Google-Twitch deal that was never confirmed (but reported as done and dusted by many news sources). That turned out to fall through and Amazon bought them instead.
The entire Mojang staff have gone almost complete radio silence since the rumour was announced, so it's almost certain that something is going down and they're not allowed to talk about it. However, if they are up for sale there's surely more than just one bidder involved.
We'll just have to wait and see what comes of it.

The first time this happened I lost a good Diamond sword. Thanks for that. Another lag related issue, Nether Portals. Ever since the update to 1.8 I've done serious rubber-banding every time I go through a portal. Anyone have this issue? Also, I know in the past we've discussed a battle area. I'd be willing to wall off a small area to use as a natural battle area. Anyone still interested? I can't do much more than a simple wall but that I can do

But I was wondering if I could get the world (or the old one) to play pixelmon. I'd really like to play pixelmon in the Dakka world. NOt asking to add the mod to the world. I am confident Microsoft, they usually do not interfer with small companies.
There is a movement currently in the industry to buy indie companies and give them funding, mostly because they might make another game that sells really well. And microsoft probably wants to cash in on that.

I should have said RIP as we know it. Rare was reduced to a shell, Bungie moved from PC to console, Lionhead axed or shelved loads of interesting projects including black and white. I find it hard to imagine that xbox 360 / xbone wont now be the focus of new features instead of the PC moving forwards, and we'll see a migration of efforts away from Linux and Java. Chunks of the community will lose interest because it is no longer a 'cool' studio in charge. As MS game studios has to shore up a bad quarter I would not be surprised to see things move even more to a subscription based/multiplayer model as well to the detriment of private servers like Dakka/darkinnit and flexibility in general.
I can see Microsoft putting out a dedicated/branded 'surface' type tablet just for playing minecraft though, which would be cool except it will get butchered by linking in to some half-baked cloud MMORPG service that wont be implemented properly and will have some obvious oversights.

While I have my own reservations about this deal, I don't think Microsoft will risk flushing $2.5 billion down the toilet by restricting things so quickly. If they have any sense they'll let things continue as they are at least for some time. However, that said, it will take a light hand to keep things going smoothly and Microsoft have a lot of shareholders who will want things change eventually to bring in more cash. One change I fear would be them restricting multiplayer to only Minecraft Realms servers (or at the very least bringing in "exclusive" first month access for new updates to Realms).
There's already been quite a few knee jerk departures already in the modding community, from people who just outright refuse to support Microsoft. LegoBurner, you also know me and my refusal to buy an XBox for similar reasons. However, I'll continue to run the servers for as long as I am unhindered by either actual software restrictions or my own moral feelings about any attempts at monetisation.

I can seriously only laugh at that. There's nothing wrong with Microsoft. Phil Spencer already explained what they're planning to do: change virtually nothing. But "oh noes, ebul M$ code will never touch muh pc, I'll Skype my friends to comvince them to do the same!"

It's less about not wanting a Microsoft product on their computer and more about not wanting to be working for free to indirectly help Microsoft earn more money.

Since "that PR crap" is the most sensible business decision; yes.
And what's the difference between helping a big company with a lot of employees make money, and helping some Scandinavian guy make money?
I know who has given the most money to charity, and helps the most people get a job and a meansof supporting their families (it's not Notch).

I don't suppose anyone has a slime farm up and running do they?
I know I had a few slime balls in storage but they have vanished ... which almost certainly means that I told someone they could grab them and forgotten all about it.
So a simple/reliable means of grabbing slimes would be lovely.

It's most likely a bug from the 1.8 upgrade, as the chest storage format has changed. Any chests that had their contents changed in 1.7 are fine, but if you've not changed the contents of a chest in a couple of versions, it might not have survived the upgrade. I have backups, so not to worry.

I hosted the TS server during the dragon fight as people wouldn't likely have time to stop to type and it would be good for communications in that particular event. My main concern with running a TS server permanently was that it fragments the chat a little. Yes, those who don't want to talk can still listen in and only type replies, but it also changes the (normally) casual aspect of the game a little too. Some people might not want to sit with a headset on just to keep up with what's being talked about during normal gameplay.
That said, if people are having their own Skype chats because there isn't a TS server, then that's more fragmenting than there being a TS server. (Not everyone wants to share their Skype account).
So yeah, I'm a bit undecided...

I've used Skype occasionally to help co-ordinate group build or combat projects, just because it's quicker and because I suspect that the 1-2 other players on the server at the time probably don't want to hear our chatter of "no, I think cobblestone slabs would look better there, oh, I dunno, shall we try it again with stone brick slabs?"

Thanks for the Diamond, man. I've made six more stacks of Obsidian but you're probably already finished. If you are, then maybe someone else might want to take this stuff off of me, maybe make their own gold farm? All sitting in a chest at the end of North Tunnel.
You can have it for free, as much dirt as you can carry would be good.
Nope, I took yesterday off, I'm going to finish mining up what I need today. I brought you all the dirt I had and took 3 stacks.
where are you getting all that obsidian?
Thanks again for the obsidian, and stop by my farm anytime and take what you need from it.

Pleasure doing business.
I get it all from my underground lava rivers. I thought they'd be very weakened, but all this Obsidian mining has only destroyed a single tendril in my network of lava. I just want to fill in my caves with dirt, but I don't like wasting lava by just destroying it. Which is silly, since I wanted to fill them to get my computer to run faster because caves you can't see still slow you down. But now I have a better computer so it doesn't really matter any more, plus apparently they also made the code more efficient to deal with that problem.

Regarding upping the difficulty to Hard, is that something that can be localized?
if we build an arena, could Darkinnit spawn some Mob Spawner blocks that churn out Hard level mobs, but keeping mobs on the rest of the server set at normal? We could then use water channels to funnel the mobs into a central chamber that players can enter to fight them and gain XP in a sort of wave defense game.
A cooperative Mob combat arena would be a far more fun way of earning XP. Automatically Appended Next Post: Lotet wrote:Thank you, though I think you already gave me that permission.

I've been all for hard mode for a long time, it makes the game a bit more challenging. It makes mob farms more efficient and XP can be gotten quicker too. The difficulty isn't a big jump between normal and hard anyway. Torches help the casual player if they are building or doing whatever casual players do.

Someone want to dig up the couple of previous discussions on the matter of changing the difficulty or shall we leave Darkinnit to just copy and paste his response?
Dakka's a vanilla server. Everyone should have the same experience, and that should be one which is the most accessible. The regular difficulty level is probably going to have more adherents to it than the other ones, so its up to those who want to have something different (not just in difficulty levels, but in all areas) to just deal with what the vanilla settings are. Darkinnit set up the FtB server for those who wanted to play a Dakka server with mods. I doubt he'd set up a separate one for just Hard mode, let alone change the regular server. As far as having a dedicated area which spawned hard level mobs (if that's even possible), would it actually be used, and if so what would it offer that an area which was full of regular mob spawners wouldn't? Given that that's pretty much just an exp farm, and one which is more bent than one with mobs which gave of less exp, it doesn't seem like something very balanced. I mean there could be rules and such over its use, but it still seems like something which wouldn't be used by many (the previous server was littered with PvP arenas which nobody used).
So the argument that others will adapt to the harder difficulty isn't a strong one to me. Rather it'd be up to the minority who want the change to just deal with the status quo instead. =P

I got my gold/mob farm functioning. It's working good, in passive mode I got 1142 drops, including 19.3 gold bars.
In active it will fill up a double chest in under a 1/2 hour.
Now the fun part, to design a decorative shell around it, Is anyone good at making giant statues? I'm thinking it's shape would blend well with a giant creeper, but the portals and afk room could make for a person with glowing glasses. I could really use some artistic pointers as I've never made a giant statue before.
It's at -1847 723 to see what I'm working with.
I need to make a shell next so I can then design the storage room around it.

Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier. It's a no to hard mode.
I think it's plainly clear that enough people have expressed dislike at the idea. Also zombies break doors on hard mode, which would break some people's existing builds.

It's the chickens - you have to kill the chickens
The bug is leftover from when baby zombie chicken jockies would despawn but leave the chicken behind, which doesn't despawn. The chicken grows up and starts to lay eggs. Zombies spawn in the dark and pick up the eggs. Zombies carrying items don't despawn. Eventually zombie singularity occurs.
Now they've changed it so that baby zombie chicken jockies despawn including the chicken and the chicken doesn't lay eggs either (I think). But any zombies carrying (or still picking up) eggs from 1.7 remain.
Killing the chickens helps to prevent the issue from recurring.

Darkinnit's all about presentation first He'll go in there, flying about shooting rainbows out of his arse and throwing potions everywhere, only to quietly just enter in a console command out of sight to actually deal with the issue. He could have just done the last bit, but he's a mod who likes to go the extra mile (and exercising his mod powers is truly one of the highlights of his day. Commands are no fun, it's all about the thrill of the hunt.
I've reduced the entity count in Desubot's area from 500 to around 200. About 80 of that is in the sheep pen and the rest is villagers, cows, pigs and misc cave monsters.

Yeah it was me. Its still planned, but I'm bogged down with uni work at the moment. A portion of its above my house, though I think I ran out of dirt or something so its not quite so large. , practically speaking I aught to have not built it over land (why do I keep making platforms over my existing homes? They just make the area beneath a mob zone), but well, I guess if I can be arsed I'll hollow that area out into a pit with the existing fort thing sitting on an overhanging edge.

Yes, the dragon has been killed before, I didn't get to participate in that and that's something I've wanted to do for ages and someone went and did it on their own, if I'd have done that people would have bloody moaned. I have the ability to "swap" versions of the End at any time.
So say someone builds a huge enderman grinder in the end which people love for gathering enderpearls. But then a couple of people decide they want to fight the dragon at the weekend.
I can swap the end back to it's original state (complete with dragon), let the dragon hunters have fun and once they're done, swap the end back to the version that had the enderman grinder built.
Backups are useful

Yeah, I need to update the Overviewer map renderer to the 1.8 version to pick up all the new block types. I've not had the time lately, but I also thought it good that it's (temporarily) hiding the Ocean monument locations. It makes it a bit more special when people find them.

So yeah, I hate those egg hordes.
I'm working to finish up the first level of the basement of the Mesa, right? Blocking things in, getting ready for the big super-mine.
I fall into a ravine. No big deal, half health, got blocks to dig out... Oh hey, a zombie. Wait. He's got an egg! AHH TWENTY ZOMBIESALLATONCEdead.
Go back to try again, and again, and again, and die each time. (also, odd lag when I respawn, keeps me in my room for waay too long).
Finally finish of the zombie horde, only to watch as my stuff all despawns a few blocks away from me, because the feature that's supposed to cause zombie hordes to actually save your gear if you die to them, instead gets filled with eggs from a single cave-wall chicken.
Lost one of my enchanted mining picks, and a ton of smooth and cobblestone. So salty.

I've tried a clean install 3 times now and the launcher doesn't seem to want to create the folder and making it myself doesn't do the trick either. EDIT: Ignore me. Finally came across a helpful thread on it. The problem is with 1.8 not creating the folder for some reason. So far, I've tried placing and removing blocks around them, trying to trick them with piston retractions, all sorts of things. No. When you put one stair in front of you, and then stand beside it, and place another one facing another side, it'll form a corner. He's trying to form two of these corners with two stairs.

Even tried doing things like 'hidden stairs' and piston shenanigans. I think it's the way they're coded, honestly. A basic "If-Then" that uses orientation of adjacent stair blocks to determine whether or not that corner chunk is there, and one that isn't tick-dependent at that.
Part of the reason I like Microblocks is that they allow you to fix this sort of thing. Even just the placing method is a little more elegant, really.

the Darkinnit.com map seems to be doing something weird.
This is my main base/home (the Cadian Gate).
https://www.darkinnit.com/newdakkamap/#/3126/64/-2048/max/0/0
in-game, this area is around the X: -2000 Z: -3000
But the map Over Viewer says that this area is X: +3000, Z: -2000.
Whats more, the map indicates that Storm Warriors has ring fenced a HUGE area of land and claimed it (marking his "territory" with tilde ~ Signs). This includes areas of land DIRECTLY ADJACENT to my tower, land I have begun to build on or plan to build on (roads and such, a beach area that I may turn into a dock, hills and meadows/plains where I plan on building farms etc). And it also includes a HUGE swathe of the sea to the east, where I want to eventually build some underwater structures.
The map indicates that StormWarriors' location is here, in the middle of the sea.
https://www.darkinnit.com/newdakkamap/#/3214/64/-1212/max/0/0
This has gotta be a mistake right? The map over viewer has gotten out of sync with the server and everything has been shifted several thousand metres in the wrong direction? I thought StormWarrior's territory was far, FAR to the East from here.

That's been a problem since the map was updated to 1.8. It seems the compass at the top right of the map has just been spun 90 degrees around and all the markers have been spun around with it. I wonder how much of a hassle it would be to fix that.
Say, does anyone mind if I explore a bunch of the land in the bottom left area of the map?
There's a lot of unknown space and no one seems to be building anywhere nearby. There's more stuff from the old server than there is new stuff.
Maybe I'll put down a proper portal/tunnel...

Yes, the map is very confused at the moment. The Overviewer team are aware of the issue, so hopefully a fix is not far off.

We need proper areas to strip mine for the new stone types. I have started a few and will probably make a portal to there.

I've got some spare. Dirt's one of the things I don't use much of, though I've gone through a bit of it lately- and I'm always digging up more that I don't need. If you want to come by, the middle chest in my basement (where the portal comes out) should be relatively full.

Huh? Unless I'm missing something the graph here shows 6 people online around the time you posted:

Well I just got whitelisted and hopped on for a bit. That Dakka sign is huge, holy crap. Was tempted to jump off the top of it but I wasn't confident in my ability to hit water on the way down.
Gonna try to find a place that's relatively empty to hole up in, but after studying the map it's hard to find a spot that's far enough away from other players.
Anyone mind if I claim this spot? Someone has started building on the same land directly west of there, but I think I'm far enough away. I'm pretty sure I'm out of visual range anyway, guess I just need to be careful mining.

Sure, the owner of that place has given it up to someone else but I don't think they took it. The blocky cobblestone structure has been there for ages.

The cobble has recently been replaced with brick, I've finally been able to get on here and there. 4oursword didn't want it after all, but I don't care if you build around there. I might be in and out, but I won't be mining or anything disruptive.

Bear in mind the map player locations (and signs and beds) are currently bugged and rotated 90 degrees to the left around 0,0. So the player locations on the map are incorrect. Best way to find unoccupied land at the moment is just to look for a lack of structures etc.

Is anyone up for making a full on minecraft map similar to mindcrack?
Anyone wanna be the Dakka's Official Minecraft Explorer?
I feel like we need a community project....
Anyone up for it?
You know to at least have some community things going on? Like a death games basically or a community project like making spawn awesome? Having statues of Dakka Dakka's Heroes. Or just do stuff together to promote a more community environment?
Anyone in?
I have set up the community mine. So hopefully people come to visit it.

Different servers have different feels to them. KFPerin's server (the first I was ever on) had people all spread out, but what kept on happening was one person found a neat spot to build, made their house, constructed an extension of the server-wide pathway/roadway system, then suddenly a whole town would spring up, when everyone went to build their own house there.
Then someone tired of that town would move somewhere else, build a house, build a path, then another town springs up as everyone abandons their previous house.
It was very cyclic and sprawling and nomadic, and it just happened. There was a PVP world (which was pretty cool) as well, where people built more 'dangerous' bases.
Then there's other servers which are more adventerous, and others which are less- for example, MindCrap is all about cooperative building of a single 'city' area- though it's only 3 people, making that a little easier. Direwolf's server (or whoevers) tends to be about people building fancy bases that are designed around resource accumulation/showing off, and the upkeep and progression of personal power- with a network of portals or link books so folks can do occasional tours and bum stuff off other people. Hermitcraft is the most similar to ours, where people find their 'area' and build there, but it has the Hermiton towns (which are essentially showcases of building talent- people don't really live there, I think) which work as a market hub for resource trading, and there's the supermassive community projects like the Iron Foundry. Attack of the B-Team is all about pranking people and making jokes/playing roles.
DakkaDakkaCraft has a dozen people who do megabuilds in Survival. Honestly, a lot of our stuff is super impressive in its own right, even (or especially) compared to what you generally see on YouTube or other servers- we regularly run out of Cobblestone, we build so big. But things like Chasmholm, Ma55sterFett's caverns, Abso's cathedral(s), the (increasingly unsuitably named) Grey Mesa, the Titans, the Manor, Dark's Castle and half a dozen other locations and builds that are easily spotted at max distance on the map are sort of a feature of our server. Builds that get people to go 'Wow' when they see them- and we have the Nether Network for travel when we want to visit others. But I don't think we're a 'teambuild' sort of server.
By all means, go ahead and start on a 'community project' if you want- but I guarantee that, even if there's some early interest, after actual groundbreaking there's only going to be one, or maybe two people actually working on it. That's not a bad thing, but I think it's how our server is.
What we [i]could[/li] do as a 'community' thing, would be to organize a massive tour. Figure out a list of the major sightseeing locations and organize a time/day when a lot of people can be on- then we start at Spawn (loaded up with foodstuffs) and travel as a group from place to place.

I'm all for being part of a community project. My problem isn't so much enthusiasm (which I never have much of for anything), it's more that no one has neither a plan nor goal.
If I could get more instructions than:
"I'm sure you know what to do"
or
"build an arena here"
then I might actually start stomping around on build sites and do some construction. Heck, if you don't want to do that, just put some markers down and give me an area you want to level or tell me what resources you you want the most. I've got a cobblestone farm that I use while doing other stuff on the computer so that shouldn't be much of a problem. Any common resource can be requested.
Even just giving me a picture of what someone else made can make a lot of difference for me. Though I guess I should mention I prefer Style over Scale, which makes the jobs seem easier to finish in the long run.
Just, you know, give me confidence that you have a vision or something and I'll do my part.
Hmm, so, yeah, was there anything you had in mind or was this just a passing thought?
Otherwise I might just do what Shadow Captain Edithae made me think and make the White House out of White Clay (even though it's slightly pink) and rig it with dynamite... that's not offensive is it? I don't want to get banned...
