Hey Teek - maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but have you done Lootas for this army? I'm looking for some ways to do Lootas without having to pay the exorbitant prices for the box sets, so I'm thinking of kitbashing some up with standard Ork Boyz and giving them underslung heavy weapons like SM Devs. I think the backpack/harness/frame-mounted Kustom Mega Blastas look kinda bleh and wanted to see what your take on them was.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Good idea.
I got a good trick I want to try. With a bit of clipping, dremel and green stuff I wanted to get some burnas and use the deth guns with a nob kit and make some of baddruckz flash gitz ! Although I want to concentrate on painting and assembling my LOTR orcs.

Thanks again guys, I'm glad you all like the work so far!

@zilegil: The rockets on the Tankbustas? Those are taken from old Robogear kits, I've just added some spikes to the nose to match the army aesthetic. "Deys arrow-dynamik speed spikes!"

@Anung Un Rama: True, I remember regular lego bricks being rock hard when I was a kid, but for whatever reason this particular helmet cut like butter. Maybe the newer sets use a cheaper/softer compound? I dunno!

@DBM: I've assembled one squad of lootas so far, and assembled them (gasp!) mostly stock. I'm not a huge fan of the bulky harness, though I do feel it helps give the weapon a "Heavy d3" look to it. With most ork weapons being assault regardless of size, the harness helps visually cue the heavy status. I can't stand too much repetition though, so I've converted up a few with various other weapons. I plan to do a second unit, but I'm procrastinating because those suckers are mold-line-tastic. In the new unit I plan to include a lot more varied weaponry, like Tau burst cannons, Lascannons, etc.

@merchant: I'll get back on the 'Wagon soon. Right now I want to finish up the Weirdboy, and I'm playing with ideas for the BWagon, a full 20 strong Stormboy unit, custom Zaggie, custom Kommandos and Snikrot, and a completely ridiculous stompa. So much plastic, so little time.

@Reecius: Thanks!

I hope to get back in the saddle and make some serious progress on the army. Adepticon is far too soon for my Slow and Purposeful working pace, so the plan is to have the army fully painted by August. We'll see!

'Ere We Go!!!

Done a fair bit more work on the Weirdboy, and I'm happy to say he's about 99% finished. I've added a central control unit to his chest, various detail "worky bits", and a fair bit of wiring. I overhauled the Staff, complete with psychic hood, and the skull of his predecessor.

I'm really very pleased with how this build has turned out. I wanted to capture the feeling of the concept art, combining raw Waaagh energy with high tech means of harnessing and using it for destruction. I plan to greenstuff a trailing wire behind the base contact, to hide the point of contact a bit more and make it look as though it's a large cable dragging along the ground.

All told, I love the final product. I'll touch up the remaining (very minor) greenstuff work, and hopefully get some paint on him soon.

My parting gift, a semi-360 view. Enjoy!

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Impressive as always Teek especially that lego helmet

Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, love is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and fewer would derive love from it. Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose, against statistically long odds." ~ HK-47

Time to shake the dust off this and post a quick update!

The new Dread and Kan kits have hit and they are, in a word, spectacular. A joy to build, brimming with detail, and packed with extras. I liked the Deff Dread so much that I didn't feel the need to modify it too severely. Which, for me, is saying something. Also: ball and socket joints are a godsend.

I wanted to go for a dynamic pose, like he's about to grab the target with a claw and then hammer those two great drill heads into it with all the force it's pistons can muster.

I slightly embiggened the legs, and chopped up and re-posed the left leg to be stepping up on a rocky outcropping. (Articulated toe joints? I'm in heaven!) I also canned the stock exhausts in favor of some simpler ones of my own creation. For whatever reason, I really dislike the current trend in ork exhaust and mufflers, so p-card and pin vice to the rescue!

I also magnetized the fourth weapon, letting me swap from a 4 DCCW monster to a skorcha build out. I reasoned magnetizing the weapon would not only be easier than magnetizing the arm, but also provide a better aesthetic, saving me from the dreaded "magnet droop". I had to modify the skorcha a bit to make things flow, but I'm really happy with the results.

So there you go! Real life slammed my first quarter 2010, but things are shaping up to grant me a fair amount of hobby time this summer... All of which will undoubtedly be spent on my entry for the vehicle conversion contest at Gamesday Baltimore! I've been stewing up ideas for a year or two now, and this is the perfect reason to get off my duff and get to work! The whole "must be 60% GW product" rule is an added challenge, as I'm so used to scratch building my own detail, but I'm confident I can crank out something groovy by August. So if I slip back into the shadows, fear not. I'm not dead, just working feverishly on my secret GD conversion project.

That said, I will need sanity breaks, and I've got a display case full of figures needing paint. So we'll see. In any event, thanks for looking, and remember C&C is always welcomed and appreciated! Thanks!

Nice. He looks really cool with two drills, though they are a bit puny for a Deff Dread.

Really like the model; the two drills seem a tad small, but on the other hand they look like really power with those big engines behind them.

Oh man! I can't believe I lost track of this blog! The weird boy and Tank hammer came out amazing. Your conversion work is quite phenomenal!

I have to say, as well, I am very happy to hear about the toe joints in the new kanz. Those kits look jam packed with treasury bitz and gubbins.

And the Bioshock guy would make a very cool conversion.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys!

@kenshin138: Thank you! I'm actually quite hesitant to paint the weirdboy, as I'm worried about mucking up one of my best conversions.

@Anung Un Rama & The Good Green: I'm glad you like him. I've had that image of a Tankhammer since the codex dropped, and I was sorely disappointed by GW's version. When you want something done right...

As for the drills looking smallish, to be honest I didn't notice it in person. After looking at the photos however, they do come off just a bit small for a dread. I could replace them with something suitably drill-esque, like drywall anchors, but I really like the detail on the kit pieces. I think I can change the aesthetic enough by flipping them so that the armor plating and exhaust are tucked away behind, revealing more of the drill thread in a front-on view. I might also space them out (just the slightest bit) from the arms, give them a bit more volume that way.

A slight tweak to the aesthetic will fix it in my opinion, as I don't need a comically large drill, just something big enough to throw a chimera track, puncture a fuel tank, or bore a hole in a rhino big enough to fit a skorcha nozzle into...
