GW does seem to be hit and miss (to what ever proportion). Sounds like that should fix the drills smallishness.

Excuse the photo quality, I'll set up lights and get a nicer shot tomorrow.

I flipped the drills and spaced them out from the arms just a touch. I think it helps make the weapon itself appear larger.

*edit: much better photo now*

That really does look awesome moving that kit from my nifty to my must get at next opportunity pile! I also love Supaork the Weirdboy! Is it a bird is it a plane no its that zogging' Weirdboy again!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

The painting bug bit because another forum was holding a painting contest for Ork Walkers. Now that the contest is over, I can post some pics!

I broke out the paints and set to work. He got the 'Bloo Flame' treatment, and I'm really very pleased with how it turned out!

I kept the base fairly simple, just the rocky outcrop and a spare gear for scrap.

I tried several new tricks on this one. I built my first wet palette, and it is simply amazing. Keeping paints usable for hours is a wonderful thing, especially when layering and blending. I also broke out the blister pack sponge for wear and tear, and I'm very pleased with the results. It's easy, quick, and gives very natural results.

C&C always welcome!

Very nice. Picks out all the detail well and doesn't seem to overload the model. Did you win the contest?

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Thanks all!

@HadoukenAvenger: Yep, that's the one. As for the firstborn, I might have to pass. Probably wouldn't fit in my saddlebags, anyway...

@Sarigar, CommissarKhaine: The stars aligned and I managed to win the contest, despite having some very talented competition. I entered really to enforce a painting deadline. As you can see from the blog thus far, I paint horrendously slowly. This contest gave me a hard and fast deadline. 7 days start to finish...

In the end I think the pose and conversion work, coupled with a bright, eye-catching paintjob helped.

@Arakasi: See CMDante's excellent tutorial that explains the technique I used. I encourage everyone to try it. Sometimes these techniques are far easier than you might think, and they give great results.

I really like the recent Dread. Awesome paintjob. Although I think the left eye looks peculiar in comparison to the black-rimmed right eye.

By the by, what is a wet palette?

@Pika_power: Thanks! Looking at it now, I see what you mean. The left lens lacks the bit of contrast that the frame gives to the right lens. I might go back with a micron pen and try to hardline it.

A wet palette is basically a semi-porous palette sitting on top of a moist surface. Check out this nice tutorial over at The Painting Corps. It's cheap, relatively easy, and you will definitely notice a difference in the working life of your paints.

I picked up some parchment paper from the local grocery store, and used a 4"x8" plastic container I scrounged up as the base. It's got plenty of space for lots of different colors (my flames can use anywhere from 6 to 10 shades of blue) and clean-up is super simple. I just replace the parchment paper or paper towels when they get nasty, otherwise it's zero-hassle. I love it, and personally won't go back to a dry palette as long as I can help it!

Now back to the GamesDay entry... (shhh!!)

Alright! Games Day 2010 has come and gone, and I'm finally back home. Whew. The blog has been silent of late as I was working on my entry for the vehicle conversion contest. Now that it's all said and done, I can share some photos! I've wanted to do a stompa for a long time, ever since catching wind of Ein's incredible scratchbuild. The GW kit is great, but I hate, I hate, I *hate* the stupid kludgy upside-down flower pot look. The gears started turning, and Operation: Kill the MuuMuu began.

Erm, photographing something this large is somewhat challenging. I'll have to find a more suitable backdrop and get a few nice shots. But for now, these will have to do.

May I present "Da Ramblin' Wreck"

I was spurred by the announcement of the conversion contest at Gamesday, recommending unpainted models (hooray!) and requiring at least 60% GW product. This meant minimal scratchbuilding, and a lot of kit bashing. In the end I'm really happy with the results. I based my design on the Ghaz model because, really, who else is a more befitting inspiration for a stonkin' huge death robot? I roughly mirrored the proportions, which meant a lot of work went into making legs. Legs are notoriously absent from the stock kit...

The arms are magnetized, and very easily swapped. This will allow me to build a lifta droppa or any other weapon variants in the future. I went with my favorite CCW, the bucket-wheel of death, seen previously on my deff kopta.

Here he is next to the Forgeworld variant model, for scale. You can just barely see the LED effect I installed in the rhino shoulder. The grot rigger is busy repairing some broken gubbins, and there are a trio of LED's to simulate the flash of welding. Video here would help, must look into that.

And here he's ready to take out Camden Yards. Stomp! Stomp! Stomp!

I'll get some nicer shots soon, to show off individual details (like the huge V8 engine on the back, the grot bomb, etc.)
As always, C&C is welcomed and appreciated, let me know what you think!

Excellent! The method for avoiding the bell stompa and not making it just a rumbling, tracked stompa has eluded me, but this is wonderful. I'm especially liking the SM bits you've added into it, as well as having little LEDs around to simulate welding. Anyway, keep up the awesome stuff
