I love the trucks. They almost look cartoonish. I think you should model one going off a dirt ramp Dukes of Hazard style.

I know what you are talking about now. I currently need another deffkopta, and have ideas/plans for about a half dozen varieties. One of those was another Apache style one - but with a grot pilot and gunner - mimicking the actual cockpit setup of the Apache. Possibly I could put a third grot on top (perhaps with binoculars?) acting as the radar dome? Probably the main issue is the extra height it will add to the model...

Breotan wrote:Nice way to make the truck look like the ramshackle bucket of bolts it is. Don't know about putting it on a flying base though.

Oh and minus 50 DKP for the lack of dresses in a Dark Angels themed army.

Is your issue with the flying base just personal preference or do you see an actual issue? If so, would you care to elaborate? I can't see how to make it airborne without a base of some kind, and the flying base seemed perfect (better still that I only needed one when I was originally expecting to need two...). Do you have any other suggestions?

-50DKP? Dresses are reserved for ICs and perhaps some Nobz. Da Big Mek has one. Unfortunately, in 500pts there is only one other Nob...

How big a ramp are you thinking? I wouldn't want to make the trukk twice as high? I have thought about one landing/crashing from a jump though...

The trucks are looking really cool. Sorry I haven't emailed you the photos yet... I keep forgetting! (Shame on me!)

Instead of the flying base, how about having the truck driving up/off a wrecked rhino? You also need some grots/snotlings hanging onto the trucks for dear life to give it a bit more motion. Possibly one or two slipping off

Well, it is most important to finish my first 500pts - especially to get them painted - otherwise I will return to old bad habits and basically have mostly grey and silver minis. Not to mention the wrath of my loyal commentors...

After that, I imagine it will be a mix of raising the army to 750pts and completing/doing some of the more iconic Dark Angels conversions - I still have a Meganob, Warbiker and Deff Dred that got put on the backburner... Unfortunately the easiest way to expand to 750pts is probably also the most boring - adding another trukk of boyz and another deffkopta - though I do have a lot of deffkopta ideas... This may change after more games too... I have the FW halftrack trukk as well, which I was planning to do up as a transport for MANZ and/or the Warboss (in Deffwingz white). An actual Warboss wouldn't go astray eventually either! Basically - too many ideas/things to do! Once I have 500pts down though, I'm hoping to have a little more freedom. Maybe I'll do a poll or two - one to set the order of completing my 500pts (what do you want to see painted and complete first?) and after that, what do you want to see next?

No problems! Gotta organise next week too . Not sure about the wrecked rhino... as with the ramp idea, it would seem to add too much height? I'll have to think about it some more - feel free to clarify further, or I'll just talk to you next week. I do like the idea of using grots/snotlings (probably grots) hanging onto the trukks - I agree it should add to the feeling of motion I am going for.

Keep those comments coming!

Ok. So - my holiday is nearly over - I'm back in London on the 4th - back to work and back to where my tools/paints etc are. Looking back at my list, there have been a few minor tweaks, some new (incomplete) modelling, but not much new in the way of models ready to be painted or completed .

Key: Parts ordered / model being built, Model built, needs paint, Complete

Skarag Mekslag (Big Mek) w. Kustom Force Field, Burna, Boss Pole : 110pts
12 Shoota Boyz (3/5/3), including Nob (Power Klaw, Boss pole), with Trukk (Boarding Plank, Reinforced Ram, Red Paint Job) : 162pts
11 Shoota Boyz, with Trukk (Reinforced Ram, Red Paint Job) : 111pts
2 Deffkoptas both with Twin linked rokkits, one with Buzzsaw : 115pts

Total: 498pts

Although it does look a bit daunting having so few Shootas ready - I am quite happy to use my existing Nobz/Sluggas as "counts as" - which would make the second unit 6/5. The only model I don't have started is the second deffkopta - as I am currently just substituting a clipped together AOBR one...

So the question is this - what should I focus on completing first? Second? If I can get any sort of consensus I'll make sure to target it first! (Depending on how well this goes, I might do it again for expanding the force - both list wise and theme wise...)

Thanks in advance,
Adrian

I say finish the shoota Boyz. You'll need plenty of those anyway, and if you start them soon enough in the process you won't be stuck with having to paint nothing but basic boyz in the end. It'll help keep you motivated, since then you can reward yourself with some nice stuff. They're also the unit you're least likely to change the composition off, meaning the models will always be useful.

Skarag Mekslag and da Pain Boy'z Errand - Part I (Ork vs Tau, 500pts)

First battle of two on the weekend. Tau were not shooting any better than Orks, and I think were somewhat restricted by the small, oval shaped table size. Still, we did start 24" apart, and the corners (such as they were) were not utilised... You be the judge!

Skarag Mekslag and da Pain Boy'z Errand - Part II (Ork vs Tau, 500pts)

As the first game went so fast (3 Ork turns), we went for another. Unfortunately for the Tau, my first game going second had them crippled by Night Fight and then in assault on first turn. Worse (for the Tau) - the assault carried over to the Tau turn and resulted in the loss of two Fire Warrior squads... Still, at least they managed a decent round of firing before the game ended (again, Ork turn 3...)

Thingz woz lookin' up. Maybe da Pain Boy did knowz watz hez wuz doin? Da good news woz dat apparently a large contingent of da beakie Deffwing, along with some 'umies and even some of doze 'umies wot we 'ad doublecrossed 'ad shown up on da Tau world. Da bad news woz da rest of da boyz wouldn't get dere in time for da krumpin. Skarag scratched his chin - bad news for da rest of da boyz anyway. Still, da boss believed taktiks dictated dat a large, dispensable screen would be needed to ensure Skarag's small band of boyz got where dey woz needed, and without enough grotz on hand, Skarag had been tasked to find a suitable replacement. Consequently, Skarag 'ad 'ad to return wot Tau stuff and prisoners da boyz 'ad looted as a sign of good faith (well, da bitz wot he couldn't finda use for anywayz) in exchange for joinin "da greata good". Temporarily of course - just long enough for dem ta take da brunt of da beakie an 'umie shoot'n. Da Ork trukks lined up behind da Tau trukks, directly facing da beakie Deffwing. Skarag ordered both Ork trukks to give da Tau a friendly "nudge" and da battle began. Skarag watched, mesmerised, as da Tau guns effortlessly wrecked a Landraida - making a mental note to investigate dem more carefully after da inevitable "leaving of da greata good". More of da beakie Deffwing appeared - raisin' a roar from da boyz as dey would now 'ave enough ta go around. One Tau trukk fell, fulfilling its purpose. And den da boyz were in amongst ta thick of it...

Orks rock! Just had to say that first

@endtransmission and I visited The Spiky Club in Reading on Thursday night. Unfortunately the going battle size seemed to be 1500pts, and we had only brought 500pts each (though we would have been happy just to play each other). Luckily for us, we met another pair of newcomers who had come together, and were able to add our 500pt forces to their 1500pt forces for a doubles 2000pt game. All of us, whilst having played 40K previously, were fairly new to 5th edition - so suffice to say we didn't finish - but it was a blast!

So - it was Tau (1500pts) + Orks (500pts) vs Dark Angels with Daemonhunter allies (1500pts) + Guard (500pts) - for a capture and control, pitched battle. A brief rundown of the highlights over two turns follows:
  • Tau/Orks win roll off and decide to go second, and then seize the initiative!
  • @endtransmission manages to fail all but one Perils of the Warp role for both his Primaris Psyker and the psyker battle squad. (The successful roll ended up destroying one of my trukks...)
  • Tau and Dark Angels players astonished at the charge range of Ork Trukk boyz (Turn 2 assault)
  • The Big Mek and his shoota boyz manage to put down a Deathwing squad over two assault phases, for the loss of the Big Mek and a boy.
  • The Nob and his shoota boyz multi assault the second Deathwing squad, including Belial and an Apothecary (who annoyingly saved one shoota death out of two going in) and a Storm Trooper squad - all in cover! - killing one Deathwing and four Storm Troopers for the loss of 2 boyz and sending the Storm Troopers packing. Unfortunately the Deathwing made a better showing in the next assault phase, killing 3 for the loss of none (saved both Powerklaw hits!) and sending the boyz packing instead.

  • Suffice to say I was very pleased at the boyz showing - I really didn't think two units of 11 shootas, a Big Mek with Burna and a Powerklaw Nob were going to be that successful against Deathwing. Had I known beforehand that Belial was in the second squad, I think I would have attempted to single him out for some Powerklaw instadeath...

So, as I started - Orks rock!

Now I need 750pts to team up with @endtransmission against a combined Tau/Dark Angels force next week... Thankfully I had been thinking about this before, and will be tooling up the second Trukk (+Nob with Powerklaw, +Boarding Plank) and adding 9 Kommandos (2 Burnas) + Snikrot for some ambush shenanigans I will have to bring forward my Kommandos purchases - but they won't arrive before Thursday. Instead, I've worked out I need to put together 9 more shootas (to fill out enough models for the two shoota boyz Trukk mobz) and 2 burnas (for the Kommandos) next week. I can then use my existing sluggas and Nobz for the rest of the Kommandos in the meantime....

I did get painting done this week - 13 models in progress (5 shootas, 2 sluggas, 4 nobz, 1 big shoota, 1 warbiker) - base coats are mostly done, so I guess this is what you might call "table top" ready Didn't bring them with me to Scotland this weekend, so no photos. Should be able to get some next weekend as I have games scheduled in Glasgow. Will have to concentrate on the painting again the following week...

    Thanks for reading!

Not OT. Warning - I just don't like lootas. I don't know if its the inability to move and fire or just the models - whenever I see units of them, the gun rig just looks wrong to me, perhaps too consistent? *If* I did any, that gun rig would be the first thing to go... Instead, I'll eventually have tankbustas filling the devastator role....

No plans for Flash Gitz at the moment...

    DA PLAN

Right, now that *that* is all of of the way (and apologies if I missed anyone along the way - I do appreciate all of your comments - not just the praise!), lets get back to the situation at hand!

Okay - so I have 13 models currently being painted (there were some delays due to a week in France and a week off ill). You may be able to see these in the group shot. Let me know if you are interested in close ups of any.

I am not painting 13 at a time in the future!

I also have all the models for the 750pt force you can read about in the battle reports linked above. Yes - I'm getting games and I'm happy! The models are not all complete, but complete enough for representation/size...

I think I am going to break my progress into lots of 5 models and see how that works out. For these purposes, warbikes will count as 2, deffkoptas and the big mek will count as 3 and the trukks will count as 5.

Then its simply a case of:
    a) Completing the 13 models I'm currently painting
    b) Choosing the next 5 models (or equivalent) to model and paint.

I will be asking for your input into the order - but we can wait till I finish step a before diving into that... Still, even after a, I still won't have a complete mob! (I think I need to do a minimum 3 more shootas - so the next group will probably be that plus either the deffkopta or the big mek...)

Oops - now I've run out of thoughts. Will try to update more frequently in the future!

    Thanks for reading,
    Arakasi
