Major Update - 11th Light Horse brigade -
Group Shot and yes I ended up going with horses, it just felt right.
Standard Bearer with rebreather.
Melta Gun with RB.
Flamer (poor horse is going to have singed ears).
Brigadier General with Powerfist.
There are ten in total, including wounded Vox officer, Relaxed Medical officer and more (it's a very characterful unit).
Now to clean them up a bit and get some paint on them.
The light brigade looks great! I remembered I have a movie lying around, it's about the australian light horse brigade in world war 1. Now I must see that movie again.

Bobbing along on the briny North Sea, and Montrose, Scotland when home
Zombie wcythe blades make wicked claws and you can trim them down to suit.... if you have a friend who is making a nurgle army, convince them to make plague zombie/victims and pilfer the scythes loving the ts marines and the anzac look of your rough riders.
I have been away for a whle, have you done the aussie footsloggers? Maybe do a sprinting trooper a la the movie gallipolli

It's only a small army so I wanted it to look as inspired as possible and I think I'm really starting to get there. My only issue now is I have run out of heads so it's off to
Maxmini for some more next week and then back to the skave while I wait for the parts to arrive.

Good tip on those Scythes I'll have a nose about my flgs see if anyone is nurgling up the place or runnign an undead army with spares.
I've done some but only painted a few and yeah there will be a couple of sprinting soldiers with bayonets out.
BLACKHAND wrote:Horse brigade looks great man, Think the choice of horse vs cold ones was the right way to go as well.
In the end so do I, the real trick was finding the right horses, like I said early in the blog I don't lik the GW ones and lucky for me one of my local stores (Tactics)
was having a sale on period war mini's and I was able to pickup 12 mounted American civil war cavalry, the guys were throw wayas but the horses are quite well
detailed and the right scale for IG (just) and not being a fantasy horse they have bundled gear on them like bags and ammo pouches etc.
So yeah in the end the choice though a gamble on those minis was the right one.

Sorry for the OT Santo...
I think it looks too "blocky", or "square"... I like the current ones actually, their curves looks nice... But that's personal taste, I guess!

I'm sorry I arrived too late, but I liked the Sand colour very much!!! Especially with the awesome cracks! The Charcoal + Camo was pretty nice too, really unusual!
As for Huron, I liked the test version better, especially on the right arm : it really looked like the flamer was integrated into the armour, whereas now it's just as if he's carrying a satchel or something... Still awesome though, uh!
And your weathered white looks great too...

Yeah everything is lightly drybrushed with a mix of white and bone to give it a dryer dusty look.

I'm still torn when it comes to the marine colour I have two painted in sand and three in white, the white is easy changed to sand and at this point I will probably go that way (I've been doing a lot of side by side comparisons with them), the sand not only fits with the rest of the army it's a fairly unique colour scheme for space marines. That said I realy like the bold white as well.
My main focus for the army at this point will be final assembly and painting of what I have now then transports.
I have to say I'm really enjoying this project and the feedback from you guys.
I'm glad the light horse brigade made an appearance. I'm a huge fan of roughriders.I assume that's what you'll be playing them as, though the lack on lances confuses me some Do you have something else in mind for them?
Cheers,

ok that makes sense!
The reason for the dusty look will be fully explored when I post what little fluff I have maganed to write up for these guys, but basically it's a pretty barren place
they come from and they are specialists in barren places so for the look I've gone spinifex (tyep of grass) desert so dusty and dirty.

Sure do, It's not an IG list but a Badab Wars/Tryants Legion one. These guys are a "plays as" addition to the army and will take the place of the Iron Hunters squad in game.
(Normally a Bike mounted Assault squad).
Though if I end up expanding this list to the point of an Imperial Guard army I will certainly re-model the unit to support the roughriders entry in the common IG codex, giving them lances in the proccess.
To Clarify why I'm using the Badab Wars book 1 for this army; is to allow a unique take on imperial forces which have been cut off from the Imperium for a long time essentially developing
in parrallel to the "Normal" Imperial forces, that is allowing the combination (directly without allies) of Sapce Marine and Imperial Guard elements to the single army list.
On top of this the army constitution/requirments are smaller than a normal IG force, in that it only requires a single HQ and single Troop choice allthough these must be a particular unit for each
(Legion Auxilia Command & Legion Auxilia HQ and Troop respectfully). Which makes this a perfect list for a small 1500 point army while still giving enough flexability to convert and display/deploy a
variety of unit choices and play styles.
In my case I have.
HQ: Legion Auxilia Command (5man)
Elites: Army of the Southern Cross Retaliator Marines (Astral Claws) (5man)
Troops: Legion Auxilia (20 man top of 40)
Legion Armsmen (10 man)
Fast Attack: Light Horse Brigade (Iron Hunters) (10 man)
Heavy support: Vulture
Bushmatser Battle Tank. (Leman Russ BT)
Dedicated Transports: Rhino (need to fix this)
Chimera (need to buy this)
I'm going with the Astral Claws colours the metal and minior colour feels more realistic to me, now to help the blending of the unit to the army itself I have added some cowls to the marines
with GS, I may have already said this but I envision a marine army that is as much apart of the IG as onto itself and also in following with the base army the Astral Claws the army list repeatedly
mentions Huron's need to have a chapter of emense scale and so he would secret marines in his guard to hide his true numbers, now thats pretty evil so flipping that, my marines are acustomed to operations along side the men and women of the IG due to their long reliance on each other and their shared isolation.
Anyhoo, marines is metal and gold and blue.
I still have some drybrushing to do and some more washing/inking but you get the drift of the scheme. oh and this was just taken off my desk not with my light box so sorry about the crappy images.

Ok so been a day or so, really only painting has been happening I'm nearly done with the first 10 guard, moving slowly at this point for three reasons
1. Paintbrushes are about dead
2. Out of primer paint and matt finish
3. Preorderd this little guy and a few friends from forgeworld for the army
He's going to be my Ven Dread with two twin-linked autocannons. (or the actual contemptor pattern Dreadnaught for friendly games).
Scale shot
He scales well with the army as well being larger than the normal dreads.
and just to keep you interested here's some pics of the completed guys so far.
See how the TS Marine blends in well in the metal and cowl colour scheme?
Still some minor things to do like paint the straps under their chins and eyes etc.
and my Marine swap Mantis assault guy for Gitsplita

Subject: Santobell's "Imperia Australis" The army so far & FW Preorders & Mantis Warroirs ... Oh my!
@ Git - I have only attached a temp membrane to the wing mounts so you can work your magic on him when he arrives (also why his left shoulder pad is missing)
The pack is a normal single engine jumppack the wings are made form 4 of the blood angel honor guard wings the feathers removed leaving only the frame,
a peice of 1mm plastic was roughly cut to fit the frame and glued into place then the same step was repeated only using half the frame (the final curve) and a shorter
length of plastic giving him an insectoid quad wing setup with larger fore wings and smaller rear ones, these are glued into place at an offset angle and then glued to the
model just above the original wing mounts and angled to match the pose.
The rear of the pack (not shown) has been extended using the barrel nozel from the Bloodangel furrioso dreadnaughts main gun arm over all it gives it a more flight look which
seems to suit the angles and shapes of the Mantis Helm by Blackhand.
Git do you want me to paint it or send it as is so you can match it to your existing units?
And yeah that new dread kicks ass, the weapon loadout for the Contemptor is really nice with both left and right hand parts matching btoh sides and it's rules are awesome.
I just think it's an extra way to have my army stand out as unique rather than just another marine or imperial guard army, though I realy need to find some unique minis to make up
my Tribune HQ unit I'm thinking of the Hazard geared command squad from FW (cadian) to get the kickass Commander mini but from there I'm not sure on his bodyguard and advisors
Raging Heroes are soon to be releasing a female Commisar which is pretty kickass but I was thinking more of some type of Arbite looking troop but don't know where to find the miniaturs.

I'd be honored if you'd paint it. I already have one vanguard built and painted by graven, so matching my pattern exactly is not important. Would rather have your work to show off.

I'm not a fan of the respirator below the nose, but I think the horse's worked better then the cold ones, and I love cold ones. I just think the sci-fi & real life mixture would have been thrown off by the lizard mount.
