Subject: 2016's "A Tale of Thirty-Five Gamers" - June, the Final Month.
I realised that I was bored the other day, and floated this ides over on my plog (go read it, it's ace!) The idea is to go beyond the usual "painting goals/resolutions for 2016" posts that many of us - including myself - have made and set up some kind of voluntary painting challenge for a bunch of us to participate in to help focus at least some of our efforts on projects that we want to finish. With that in mind, there's no "defined" project that we all work on like Zombies or Board Games, or 40k armies. We'll each set our own goal.
Criteria:
The criteria is simple. We each choose a "thing" to work on that can last us for approximately 6 months of painting - from January to June. That thing could be:
A specific army for any "large" system. i.e.: Space Marines, Ogres, Orcs/Orks/Orx/Oruks, Romans, Samurai, a fleet for Halo or Dystopian Wars - or even a fleet for X-Wing if you're repainting.
A warband/team for a smaller system. (and perhaps a backup since these often tend to cap out at 16-40 models) i.e: SAGA Normans followed by Vikings. Bloodbowl Orcs followed by Elves. A Frostgrave or Mordheim Gang followed by a different gang or even a bunch of random encounter miniatures. (Ice Spiders and shizzle)
A bunch of stuff for a specific game.
i.e.: The Dungeon Saga box (with or without expansions) or Space Hulk or Descent or Wrath of Ashardalon or "All the Zombies in Zombicide" or "the entire Box of Zombicide" or "all of the things I own for Zombicide" or even "anything I own relating even vaguely to zombies" or "My Age of Sigmar Box that I just got for Christmas".
It could even be scenery If you're making, say, an urban or desert, etc table and have enough stuff to paint over 6 months in discrete and meaningful chunks.
Month to Month:
Each month, participants will paint a "unit" for their chosen army/game. You can nominate it at the start or procrastinate for 3 1/2 weeks and nominate it when you're showing your "finished" pictures.
A "unit" should be theoretically legal - or at least thematically close to it - we don't care if your Devastator Squad has only three heavy weapons, or if a guy has melta-bombs for some reason, or if only half of the Lizardmen have 2-handed weapons.
A "unit" should be at least 3 models. No upper limit - if you wanna do 60 goblins, we're not gonna hold you back! Then again, if 10 goblins or zombies is enough for you in a month, that's cool as well.
A "unit" for a boardgame is something that you decide makes thematic sense. - 10 Zombicide runners? Sure. 6 Fatties? Sure. A trio of Ravenloft monsters? Sure.
A "unit" can be a hero model, or a hero model with his retinue, or a monster, or a war machine. - Marneus Calgar with or without his little gang? Sure for both. Gob-Lobber? Sure. Dragon? Sure? Army Standard Bearer? Sure. Chariot? Sure. Necromancer? Sure.
If you finish your unit, can you start another one? You sure bloody can! - Especially encouraged if your unit was a smaller number or a simpler hero model. But hey, gak happens in life, so there's certainly no reciminations if you get one, or three or none models painted in a given month.
If you finish your entire project - particularly something like a boardgame - you can choose to chill and take a well-deserved break - or continue by painting some similar/associated models. Like more Genestealers or Terminators or Zombies or D&D Monsters.
Very Important Stuff:
IT DOES NOT MATTER if you've already started the army/force/project/whatever.
IT DOES NOT MATTER if you've already half-painted all of the miniatures.
IT ONLY MATTERS that you're prompted to do some painting and get stuff finished.
The objective is simply to help motivate us all to complete those many unpainted models that we have, to support each other and perhaps some constructive advice or good-natured ribbing.
It also doesn't matter if you do a unit for this project each month and then fritter the rest of your time away on completely unrelated and random models. That's probably what I'll be doing!
As we're a good chunk of the way through January, we can be flexible here. Individuals can choose to:
* Roll it into February
* Do a smaller unit (one of those 3's or 5's) as a short-month.
* Go nuts and do a full unit in the 21 days we have remaining.
If you'd like to participate, just add a post here stating what game/system/army/etc you want to focus on. If you'd like to nominate your first month's target, then feel free to do so. At this point I'm not even sure what I'll be working on yet, so I'll update this post over the next few days while people join and work out what we're going to spend time painting.

I'm not 100% sure on my plans. Did you say something along the lines of "all the Infinity I have" was viable? Because if I put concentrated effort out each month there's no way a single force will last me till summer.
If All Things Infinity works, then I've already got January done, just need to put them on their bases. To be fair, all of the work on them has occurred in January but it won't necessarily stop me from adding some more figures for the month.
I *could* do all things zombie too, as I've got many survivors, zombies, and scenery left to go with the impending purchase of zombicide (finally!) or possibly by waiting to back Mantic/Skybound TWD... but I dunno getting Infinity done sounds more fun in some ways. It's not like I can't do zombies on the side.
I'll have a photo of the group I'll be finishing today up once they're based.

Well, this matches up directly to what I want to do anyway, so I will also try my best to keep to this! (I've tried this before and had difficulty sticking to it, but I think now with my new workspace and living situation it will be easier.
I'm going to stick to what has been majorly motivating for me last year: Board Games. If I finish a decent amount of my BG stuff by July I will be well on my way to achieving a good chunk of my goals. By July I would theoretically like to have done:
The rest of Dungeon Saga
Descent (main game + villain boxes for the main game)
Wrath of Ashardalon
at minimum.
So, for January, I nominate myself to get the Tyrant of Halpi Expansion (which is three models ) + Dungeon Furniture for Dungeon Saga done.
Excellent, welcome welcome . Looking forward to the dungeon stuff. I'd do some myself if not for the infinity backlog.
So here's my January entry, mostly finished over the last week or so...
U S Ariadna Ranger Force Charlie Tango 7.
Not the most imaginative or expertly executed, but I'm happy with them. May get more as they're released. Also may paint my second set of MA human soldiers and one truck in the scheme.

Well I too will throw a hat into the ring.....it's still attached to a severed head . Yes, I will continue my Zombicide paint up. I have most of Rue Morgue, Prison Outbreak, and Black Plague to do. Along side I'm hoping on creating a transition between the tables by creating a "Renisance festival/Theme Park area". That way all the players can wear armor and still carry m-16s . My Main focus will be getting zombies and survivors done, but we will see if I cannot get some other things done like terrain.

I may have to get in on this. I just have to decide what to do. I think I may do Dystopian Wars/Legions as I have a box of Prussian troops, an Antarctic air fleet starter, an Antarctic sea fleet starter, and several blisters of land units. I should be able to make that last until June. One question though, my Prussian infantry is a set of six, will that count for one unit or two?
I've got a lot of Horus Heresy stuff I want to get done before the end of the year: Solar Auxilia and Imperial Knights. So, this will for me be a bit of public pressure to get it done or suffer the unrelenting shame of my peers.
More importantly, I got a trip to the UK coming in April and I'll be bringing along 2500 pts of Solar Auxilia, so my main focus will be on them first, then the Knights when they're all done.
So, for my first month / time slot I'm going to try and get a pair of Lasrifle Sections done for my Solar Auxilia army. One Section is already partially painted while the other has only just been stuck together.
So, erm, witness me?

Okay, I'm in as well. For January, I hope to finish off the base game for Dungeon Saga. After that, I will probably start one of the many unfinished kickstarter packages in my Closet of Shame.
Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

I'll be a witness....unless the Inquisition shows up, Then I've never heard of you before
I think I also must add getting my gaming area back as part of my Project. Due to basement water damage and reallocation of shelving my gaming table disappeared, But I have a cunning plan.

Grim - No problemo - Infinity has very small forces, so it fits the Saga/Mordheim/Blood Bowl Team size option, so "My infinity" is cool. Cool stuff so far though I'm not sure if "finished before we started" gets you off the hook completely - now get more models done in January!
Barzam - A unit of six would usually be one unit. We've got threes there so we're covered for things like Ghar Walkers, or Bikers, or Ogres/Trolls. But then I don't know anything about Dystopian Wars so you'll have to use your own discretion to an extent. And also think about if getting 3 or 6 of them fits your painting schedule - after all, the main point is to encourage us all to get more gak painted.
Brook - WIT-NESSS!

I'm in. Overall goal is to get space hulk completed by the end of the summer. But first I need to get the last squad of cultists for dark vengeance done. So that's goal 1
Lol your knowledge of the Dystopian stuff is about as good as mine, Azazelx. I got a bunch of it as Christmas gifts thanks to it being on super clearance everywhere. Nearly three full battleforces worth on Antarctic stuff plus Prussians for the infantry scaled game. And I have no clue hoe either game plays. It's a good thing this isn't a comp to learn game rules.
Archer - sounds fine to me. Start with one, finish, and transition to the second.
Januine - cool. The Cultists are like a preface to the Space Hulk stuff then.
Barzam - sounds like a decent amount - and you're right that it's a good thing we're not here to learn the rules. I'm terrible at getting started on that sort of thing!
Buttery - Sounds perfect. Like I said, it can already be well started and with one unit a month as the target, armies can very easily carry over for much longer. In July you'll hopefully have at least 6 more units tableworthy.

Awesome! Though in one case my "unit" may have to rollover slightly. One of the builds is that FW resin KoS, and hand drilling his entire body and fingernails may be more than I can face in a month.
At the moment I'm doing Fulgrim, I reckon a Primarch should count as a unit.
Yep Primarch = Hero = Unit. Hopefully you can work on a trio of Noisemarines or something as well in the KoS build month to keep your painting licks in.

I had a painting deadline rush least night to get some gifts done. Photographed and varnished at midnight, then up at 8am to prepare for the guests who they were for. They left about 3 hours ago, so I'm just vegging out, working out what to paint and pottering around. Just mounted 2 of my ForceFX lightsabers that have been in storage for about 5 years, going to play some PS4, and then maybe nap. Later, we'll finally finish those fething Spartans, and then I can do some other painting. Except I've got that Wedding Present Sugar Skull to finish for next weekend...
Azazelx wrote: Yep Primarch = Hero = Unit. Hopefully you can work on a trio of Noisemarines or something as well in the KoS build month to keep your painting licks in.
No mucky noise marines in my EC (I know, it's weird, but after reading their origins, I'm not okay with them), just Fullers, Tacticals, Blades, Termies, Eidolon and hopefully Saul when he gets a model. My EC are pre-heresy, and my Daemons overlap by having Fullers appear as a Daemon Prince.
I'm in I guess, I'll do some Imperials for 30k/40k if that's possible. First month goal is to get my IG command squad, a Ravenwing Darkshroud, Librarian, Chaplain and 3 regular Bikers done, they're gonna get primed tonight, then I'll update my list and get pics later in the week (which means probably tomorrow) with goals for the next month or so. Should be finishing up my 40kDA, then all steam ahead towards the Calibanite Jaegers for 30k
Given that I recently got my grubby mitts on the Maelstrom's Edge box there would be an obvious candidate for what I'll do. Hmm let me think this through. I'd like to paint the Karists first. That will involve painting a squad of 5 Troopers (plus an extra with an alternative weapon), a squad of 4 Tempests, 2 Angels, a squad of 4 Angel Minnows, 2 Shadow Walkers and a Kaddar Nova. I'm sure I can figure out a reasonable way to split this lot into 6 months.
