Subject: n0t_u's Painting Blog -Tau- 22/1/2016 - Ghostkeel conversion built
Since this thread has become a bit big and this OP has started to become laggy to edit, I've created a new thread to focus on Ad Mech here
Oi'nars Sept Oi'nars is a small third sphere sept found to the south of Fal'shia centered around the planet Oi'nars, named for the shiny rocks found there. The heavy concentration of Earth Caste leads Oi'nars to mostly be a mining planet full of technological progress and combined with Ork and Eldar pirate raids the sept is mostly focused towards battle suit advancement. The Sept boasts a relatively small amount of Fire Caste for its size, mostly due to continued losses from pirate raids but also from defense against remnants of Hive Fleet Behemoth. As the raids have mostly focused on nearby Tash'var Sept a majority of this sept's military history is focused on dealing with the few remnants left from Behemoth destroyed a mere 200 years before settlement on Oi'nars; fortunate as if they had settled earlier the planet would be nothing but a barren rock.
Its forces go to battle proudly in the golden colour of the rock their sept is named for, abandoning the usual camouflage used by the Tau. This lends well to the tactics Goldensun uses as she commands a quick combined strike, stunning the enemy as the sunlight shines off their armour, before quickly retreating to patiently wait for the next strike. Conveniently enough combined with energy shielding experiments this has led a lot of the raiding Orks to believe that energy based weapons will just bounce off of the Oi'nars' golden armour.
Shas'O Oi'nars Kais Oi'yanoi (Commander Goldensun) Goldensun is a somewhat experienced commander who, thanks in part to her experiences rising through the ranks and the Oi'nars Sept being mostly Earth Caste, believes wholeheartedly in deploying her forces completely clad in battle suits. The horrors of the battlefield had led her to believe that the lack of these suits en masse put too many lives at risk needlessly, something her sept does not have an abundance of to start with. Her unique battle suit is a modification of the XV-85 that adds experimental shielding and power generation in an attempt to further improve upon the current X series.
And also a lone Daemonette.
The photos of both being somewhat blurry...
Not quite sure how I managed to get the Daemonette skin tone as it had been a while ( I think I even used blue in there somewhere) so the one I did today had a slightly different hue to it. Sort of a good thing as being somewhat of a horde it may look better to be uniform, but have light variations like that to also make them different at the same time.
Still left to go are about 18 Daemonettes, but I'll probably be expanding on this army a little more than the SoB; at least until it gets an update. The idea behind it was to finally get around to having an assault army, it'd likely be better if I went mono Khorne instead of mono Slaanesh for this, but I hate both Khorne and Nurgle.
The bases are still blank as my brother was going to start CSM anyway, the two forces would then have the same basing scheme and ally for team events and such. Though we both haven't figured out a scheme we both like yet so I may even go with sort of a grassland scheme mixing in some static grass with some tufts here and there to build it up.

This one was done by adding Ogryn Flesh to the skin wash. I was after about 3 or 4 different tones to make it look better as a horde and I think I have them now with flat purple, purple + blue, purple + flesh and maybe purple + black.
I've also stopped using the auto correct feature for these. Before I needed it so it would balance the white and made the models look like they do in person, but with these they were a bit too bright and it appeared to obscure some of the blending to me. I think that white dot on the arm may be light reflecting off of the super glue I used to fix that model (arm fell off as I finished it... ), I can't see it outside of the pictures though.
Also a group shot to show the effect having a variety of tones does for this force while still remaining uniform.
Painting the hair tie things is sort of scary as I wanted them brass/bronze, but had to wait until the hair was completely done.
Hair itself starts from black with a Liche Purple basecoat followed by some light layers of VGC Squid Pink. Then washed purple, built up again with straight Squid Pink, then 1:1 Squid Pink and Skull White, then 1:1 of that mix and Skull white finally highlighted by 2:1 that mixture to Skull White and using a fine brush the purple wash is applied to the deepest recesses and the hairline. Needless to say a slip up at that point would be annoying.
I like your work a lot. I have been a fan of Slaanesh for more then half my life now. My first conversions were noise marines. I’ll never get tired of the look of purple highlighted in red with dark blue washes. I like the skin tone combined with the pink/purples in the pictures the acontrast is very subtle and I think it works well. If you don’t mind criticisms, I think they could benefit from a forth colour, but this may be a moot point because I had intended to suggest green which would come into play for one style of basing. What I’m getting at is even if you stick with these colours the finished base may ad the little extra something that my eye is looking for.

Lovely stuff, i'd jsut like to add to whats been said before, out of all the skin tones the one with ogryn flesh looks far smoother and in general nicer to me, lovely, whats the recipe you've used for that one? (shamelessly stealing ideas here. =p )
realised you put up a recipe of sorts, but which purples/blues did you use? =]

For the skin I start with Deneb Stone over black then usually the leviathan purple wash (all the washes being left until after the basic pink areas are done, which happen to be the same as the hair except for the last highlight). Then a second wash is added for tone, to only the skin areas, being Asurmen Blue, Ogryn Flesh or Leviathan Purple. The skin is then lightly dry brushed Deneb Stone on the raised areas to sort of blend in a highlight (if done carefully it will simply lighten the tone without changing it). I then get either Badab Black or Leviathan Purple on the fine detail brush and use it on the deepest recesses to build depth. The eyes are just Badab Black applied with the fine detail brush, I think for one I actually used black ink then dabbed off the excess with a tissue but this seems easier. As for how much to apply at once, I like to go with thin layers that way you have more control over it. Generally I'll only have enough on the brush to just do one leg.
I also plan to continue experimenting with tones a little, perhaps with Baal Red as I think that may be the only wash left that could still work with the purple. The tone of this one though is Asurmen Blue under Leviathan Purple.
I'm also sort of tempted to track down some of this, but it may be overkill for the bases seeing as I sort of don't mind the minimalistic look they have to them at the moment.
I figured since this one is up and has a set of the claws I intend to use I may as well reveal the idea I have for a simple KoS conversion. Simply enough the base will be Wyrd's Nekima.
The idea being since the KoS doesn't have flight I had two options; to run it as is as a Bloodthirster, or to replace the wings and work on it a bit to make it a suitable KoS. I'm also thinking about maybe using greenstuff to build up the armour to make it look a little more like the Daemonette's.
Got a chance to get some more primed in between the weather being unfavorable and me not having the time.
Made the models before reading the codex really, so while I have two that hold banners they probably won't count as holding an icon since it seems a waste of points to me outside of heralds. But, I'm kind of new to Daemons so if it's otherwise let me know. Tried to go with a less uniform looking lighting coming from within the icon like to sort of try to give the impression of it "moving" or at least not being too constant.
For this one I simply left the purple wash out of the skin recipe and replaced it with an additional thinned blue wash.
Sort of a subtle change to the normal bluish tone. But, I like it a bit may make the next few this tone to mix in with the group as well as perhaps the planned KoS conversion I hope to be able to start on the weekend.
Might mess around with it a bit. As is it's more visible in the picture.
Also might have finally figured out what to do for the second herald. Currently I have two Malifaux crews, the second being a Lilith one is not really all that playable nor played often anyway. As Lilith got a new sculpt I may as well buy that to lead the crew leaving the current one to be stripped then converted. Not really fond of the way I've got the rest of the crew painted up anyway so may as well do them all later (crew is only 3 little guys and one big one).
This being the new one.
With this being the current one I have. Gets to be repainted for a third time. Either way if all goes to plan I should probably be able to get her sister (further up the page) and get started on the KoS.
Edit: Also thanks.
